Battery Drain - iMAC in sleep mode

I hooked up my 16g iPOD Touch to our iMAC, (USB connection) left it alone for a few hours-all set right? Came back to use the Touch and noticed the battery was drained. So I plugged it in again. The indicator shows it is charging, so cable is fine. I am thinking that when the iMAC goes to sleep it stops charging. If so, that bites but I understand. But why would it drain so fast? The Touch was half charged this past test and down to 20% in no time. Nothing running on the Touch.
Don't remember reading anything saying the USB port dies when in login mode or sleep. Usually don't charge it with this MAC, so sorry if this is an old problem. Usually use my MACBook or AC to charge.
Would you agree it's a sleep issue doing the battery drain?
Thanks

Yes, it because the compute is asleep.

  • Iphone 4 battery draining while in sleep mode

I have noticed over the past few days that after putting my iphone 4 into *sleep mode* and not using it for several hours that the battery percentage is significantly lower after powering it back up. I first became aware of this after waking up to find my battery was at 50% (8 hours before I went to sleep it was 90%). Just today I was using my phone and the battery was at exactly 85%, I turn it off and an hour later I check the battery at its at 77%!!! I then go for a 45min run (leaving the phone at the house) and coming back I see that it is at 73%.
I don't know if this is a battery issue or a problem with the wifi/3g working when the phone is in sleep mode. My parents both have the 3GS and they do not experience this with their phones.
I have had this phone for 2 weeks and I don't want to have to send it back so please tell me this is a software/settings problem and not with the hardware!!
I haven't changed any settings or downloaded any apps since I got the phone (Except for the free case app). I did however sync my email address with the phone so it may be a problem with that I don't know.
I am also on the original firmware that came with the iPhone 4 I have not updated that yet.

I think it had something to do with the signal being weak. I normally keep my phone in the basement where my computer is and often there is only 1 bar or no service at all. In order to make contact with the cell phone tower the phone has to work harder therefore using more battery. I put the phone upstairs in my room last night where the is better AT&T signal and my battery has not dropped off at all.
That could be the issue. Your phone is only getting 1 signal or no service, and is trying to work hard trying to find good service in your basement. Try setting the phone on the first floor where you get good signal and see if that fixes your battery issue,.

  • IOS 5 rapid battery drain (including in sleep mode), springboard crashes: FIX!

OK folks, I resolved all issues in their entirety with the help of a genius bar tech who recognized that I was very technical.  WARNING!  Sync or backup your phone prior to performing these steps!
First, do a MANUAL download here of the IOS 5 that matches the model of phone you have and save that image to your desktop or some other place on your computer.  PUT THE PHONE IN DFU MODE, not recovery mode (google on how to accomplish if you are not familiar).  The raeson why you are going to put in DFU mode is so that you will be able to not only get a good copy of IOS 5 installed but to ensure that your firmware is not corrupt, which appeared to be the case with my battery drains and springboard crash issues.
One you are in DFU mode (your screen should be black the whole time, again google), open itunes and it will give you a warning that says that your phone needs to be restored.  If you are on a mac, hold down the option key and press RESTORE in iTunes.  This will open up a box that will allow you to "locate and select" a file, which will be the IOS 5 image that you manually downloaded before.
Once you do, the iphone will start to restore.  After all of the restore cycles have been completed, you will be prompted in iTunes to either setup as a new phone or restore from backup.  I USED RESTORE FROM BACKUP so that I could preserve all of my settings.  Everything has been working PERFECTLY ever since completing these steps!  I will probably go ahead and make a separate thread related to this fix.
    I hope this helps!  Scott

Their is another thread in here that mentions turning off reporting of Diagnostics data (Settings --> General --> About --> Scroll to the bottom/Diafnostics --> Select Don't send.
Another item to check are you E-mail accounts. If you only have one account in this section then you should be good. If you have multiple and have every feature turned on (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, etc) then your device could be trying to update to all and timing out which would get it to retry over and over again. I have turned off all the other features for my email accounts with the exception of iCloud and my battery life is looking good.

  • Complete overnight battery drain when in sleep mode

When I close the lid of my Macbook Pro Retina, the battery of my MBP Retina goes down from full to zero overnnight.
Very frustrating because this basically makes that I either have to switch the Macbook off entirely, or that I have to connect it to the power supply.
    No weird settings...
    - Running 10.8.1
    - Energy settings: default
    - Power nap is turned off
    - Happens with both wifi on / off
Does anyone experience the same issue? Is there a solution?

  • MBA 2013 battery drain quickly during sleep after updated to mavericks

    Hi,
After I updated to mavericks this Tuesday, I noticed the battery drains quickly during sleep mode.
Before the system update, everything was ok. Each night after I closed the lid, it went to sleep and the battery only droped less than 5% after sleep of the whole night.
But during the last two nights after system update, it drained more than 50% of the battery during 8-hour sleep. I could feel some heat on its back when I picked it up. I did not change any system setting or installed any new apps.
my MBA: latest 2013 version, 13 inch, haswell i7, 8G ram, 256 SSD.
I liked my mba so much because of the long battery life. But now It was really annoying because I have to charge it very often.
Any ideas how to solve this issue?

    Hi Hans,
There's another thread going with the same issue as you... check:

  • Can't use mouse/keyboard/trackpad when waking iMac from sleep mode

Basically as the title says. When I wake my iMac from sleep mode I am unable to use my keyboard/trackpad/mouse during the login window. Once the screen goes black by itself, after a minute or so I can then log in properly.
Yes the keyboard/mouse/trackpad are all connected when it wakes from sleep as I can use any of them to wake it from sleep, I just can't move them or type with them in the login window.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac enters sleep mode while playing Blizzard games

About every 20 seconds my iMac enters sleep mode while playing Blizzrard games.  When I click the mouse or touch a key on the keyboard the iMac wakes up and the game is still running.  This has been happening more frequently over the past six weeks.  Now it occurs every twenty seconds.  I have turned off my sleep mode settings, reset the SMC, loaded the TechTool Deluxe and ran a diagnostic.  When TechTool Deluxe came to testing the video ram the utility crashed.  I ran TechTool Deluxe a second time and it crashed again while testing the video ram.  My iMac only has this problem playing Blizzard games.  I have contacted Blizzard and they don't have an answer.  Is it my video card? I have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB graphics card.  Any help would be appreciated.

Likely is the Video card, but...

  • What is the power consumption of an iMac in sleep mode?

Like most people, I let my iMac "sleep" overnight with all sorts of things set up on it. I want to buy a UPS to make sure that even if the power is interrupted, it will stay on in sleep mode.
    So, my questions are:
How much power (watts) does a 20" Core Duo iMac w/2GB memory use in sleep mode?
How much battery power do I need to buy? (I'm not an engineer; I don't know if, say, 400 watts for 60 minutes would let me use 10 watts for 2400 minutes, etc.)
    Thanks!
iMac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I also found this page, which suggests that the Core Duo processor has cool (ha) features:
"the Core Duo processor introduces new integrated per-core digital temperature sensors and advanced thermal management. One advantage of this is that if a sensor shows that one core is running hot, the thermal system will automatically lower the frequency and voltage to both cores to cool the whole chip off."
Supposedly, the Core Duo also has Enhanced Deeper Sleep (yikes) which can take processor power usage down to an amazing 1.8 watts. I don't even know if an off-the-shelf iMac can make use of EDS, which must be enabled in the BIOS of the computer.
However, I still don't have the answer to my question - How much power (watts) does a 20" Core Duo iMac w/2GB memory use in sleep mode?

  • Encore WT8 - battery discharging during the sleeping mode

My battery is discharging during the sleeping mode.
If I sleep the tablet with battery fully charged then battery is fully discharged after 14h.
I suppose that must be something wrong with it. I cant find any option to activate functionality to switch off (hibernate) tablet when it is not used in sleeping mode for particular time.
Do you have any solution or advice what I should do to change energy consumption during the sleeping mode?

    Hi
The system supports connected stand by function which starts working after your tablet goes into sleep mode.
Connected standby function is to provide a constant connectivity while delivering long battery life and at the same time some activities are allowed to run to ensure that the supported connected standby scenarios (for example receiving emails, updating tiles alive with fresh content, downloading/uploading a file from a/to a website and playing music) are functioning properly.
    What does this mean?
This means that even if the tablet is set into Sleep Mode, some background processes are still running and this could be the reason why the battery discharges.

  • IMac in sleep mode with fans blasting at 5,000 RPM?

When I came home from work my iMac was still in sleep mode with the fans running at nearly 5,000 rpm, was very loud. Anyone having the same issue?
I tested it with TechTools Deluxe and it didn't find any issues.

Reset the SMC and if that doesn't do it reset the PRAM. I think the SMC reset will take care of it though.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Imac G5 - Sleep mode won't work!

    Hey guys!
I bought my iMac in December 2004. Usually, whenever I put my computer to Sleep mode, I will see the pulse light and everything works fine. When I click on the mouse, the screen will turn on and it will display my desktop or however I had left it. But until recently, sleep mode still kind of works, but instead of going back to where I have left it, it turns back on as if I had restarted my computer! I've tried the SMU and there's no progress. Then, today, my computer just would not turn on at all until I've unplugged everything from it and did the SMU. Do you think that I will need to bring it to an Apple store to fix the sleep problem?
Please let me know if there's anyway to fix it.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hey thanks for your replies guys!
Well, weirdly, sleep mode worked today! But I will look up my serial number just to make sure that I got the extended warranty or not on the REV A (what's that exactly?) But then my boyfriend was telling me that it might have something to do with the power supply. Before I posted my question, I have my computer plugged to a power bar. After the incidence when my computer wouldn't turn on, I plugged it directly to the power jack. Could that be a cause as well? I've also unpluged my iSight from it. I'm not sure if those could be possible causes of it. Please let me know.

  • HT3887 My bluetooth devices will not wake my iMac from sleep mode.

My iMac will not awake using the bluetooth keyboard or mouse.  I can use a USB mouse but bluetooth and network connection will not respond.  I must restart the machine.  This happens after several hours of being in sleep mode like all day when at work or over night.  I have the system set to wake the computer with a keyboard or mouse click.  THis works only when in sleep mode for an hour or two.

  • Flicking noise when I boot my iMac from sleep mode??

Another problem that has struck my iMac..
Every time I boot my Mac form sleep mode it comes on and starts clicking/flicking like the fan's cough on somehting. I know it's not the fan and it's most likley to be the HD but worth asking just incase it's a problem that I can fix (which i dought).
I think I'm going to take the Mac into a Apple store and see how much it will cost to fix. Because I can't see myself going back to Microsoft windows again if this brakes.. I would rather just wait and save for a new iMac.
I've had this problem quite a while but never payed much attention to it as I thought it was because of the room tempreture. But it's annoying me now, so if anyone knows what it could be please tell me..

Been waiting along time for this problem to be fixed. Unfortunately the update hasn't help at all and even made the situation worse. Now my airplay connection from iMac to stereo abruptly stops after about 10-15 min. so I have to go over and quit wifi, start it up and find my airport network. Not sure why it always has a problem with the apple airport network. My neighbor's pc network is always there.
