Battery drain --My wifi vs another wifi

Question:
I have a 3 month old 3rd gen Touch that when connected to wifi at my house drains my full battery overnight. When I stay at my Gf's house and connected to her wifi the battery doesn't drain nearly as much (almost no drain). All Touch setting are the same and usuage is about the same in both locations. Recently updated to 4.0.
Any suggestions as to why one wifi will drain my battery more than another wifi?
Thanks...

Thanks for the response. I thought about that but in both houses the wireless router is less than 30 feet from the bed, and in my house only 1 wall seperates the bedroom from the office. Still stumped...

  • Upgrade to OS4.1 causes fast battery drain with WiFi on

I've just upgraded the software on my 3G Pod to 4.1, only to find that it has led to a much quicker battery drain with the WiFi on. Is there a fix for this or can I revert to the previous OS?

Thanks llaass, but the discussion that you direct me to does not really address the issue of why a very recent upgrade should make such a significant difference. I had already realised that turning off WiFi makes a difference. Perhaps my question should have been addressed to Apple, since it appears that it is their so called 'upgrade' that has led to a deterioration.
I'm using iOS 4.1 on my iPod Touch 3 gen with no battery drain problem. This suggests that there is another factor at play which must be present to provoke this problem between the iPod and iOS (i.e., a specific App, a router type, or ?).

  • 4.3 upgrade issues - battery drain, unstable WiFi, freezing, wake-up lag/freeze

I've been (also) experiencing issues since my Galaxy S3 was pushed the 4.3 update on the morning of 1/11/2014.  The worst is the battery drain - losing more than 50% of battery life within 4 hours of 100% with only minor texting during that time - with the charging process taking nearly 3 times longer to fully recharge.  The moment it's removed from the power cord, it drops to 98%.  This was not happening before update.
Today, I called Verizon's technical support who recommended a factory restore.  Since I read endless posts/experiences of this not resolving the issues, I chose not to take that path and to work with Samsung to understand when a fix would be pushed.  After 45 minutes on the phone with Samsung explaining the issues as if they'd never heard of such problems with the update - I was told that I clearly had water damage to my battery which was causing all of my issues.  Sure, and everyone else who owns an S3 in these forums has the same water damage.  Of course, the moment I asked to speak with the Samsung rep's superior, our phone connection grew dim, sputtered as if it were a bad mobile connection, and suddenly disconnected.
I experience the "Unstable Internet Connection" to WiFi when no other phones have issues with these networks.  They're the same networks I've always used - but since the update, they're now "unstable".
The lag to wake up when I receive a call or text sometimes takes 10 swipes and a few freezes before it finally unlocks.
I've downloaded no new apps since the upgrade, yet apps I used regularly prior to the upgrade now randomly freeze on me, requiring me to remove the battery to restart the phone.
Unless Verizon is willing to let me out of the 2-year contract since I'm not able to use my phone in the manner to which we'd agreed in that contract, they had better start acknowledging a large-scale problem with this update and work dilligently with Samsung for a speedy resolution.  Just seems odd that this update was pulled back in November for these exact issues, yet Verizon chose to allow it to be pushed to their S3 users in January without resolution from Samsung.  Gee, wonder if it's so we'll all upgrade to the S5 as it's release is a few months off.   Hmmmm.
    http://www.sammobile.com/2013/11/18/samsung-delivers-official-statement-regarding-galaxy-s3s-android-4-3-update-issues/

I agree, the upgrade is awful.  All I can do is complain publicly and if all of us do, maybe something will be done sooner.

  • Battery Drain w/ Wifi

I have a 1st Gen iPod Touch and lately I have the problem if I turn on the Wifi and use Safari,Yahoo Messenger, or Youtube it drains the battery in less than 20 minutes. But if the Wifi is off the battery will last a long time (like hours). So what can I do to fix this ? PS my software version is 2.2.1 (5H11) if that helps.

using wifi will drain the battery. but it shouldnt drain it that quickly.
go through the trouble shooting steps. http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/ipodtouch/
if that doesnt fix it, take it/send it to apple.

  • Wifi/battery drain

i have updated to iso 4.0 and the battery drains when the ipod is in standby mode. this happens because the wifi is still on when it is in standby mode is there a way to make the wifi go off beside turning on airplane mode or turning wifi off?

    Hello IevonBOS,
You are unfortunately another victim of battery draining when updating to iOS 4.0 on iPod (Touch?). This is a major issue that lot of people encounter at the moment and that Apple has not aknowledge yet. You'll get tons of details in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2474499&tstart=0.
We suggest that you file an Apple iPod Touch feedback ticket and you send your information into FredCG Google docs formulaires. Everything is in the following post : http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2474499&start=705&tstart=0
Basically it is still very difficult to really root caused the source of the problem (iOS? Apps? Notifications? Wifi? etc). You'll find a short summary of what should be done in order to maximize chances to cut down battery draining here : http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2474499&start=750&tstart=0
Nevertheless you'll have to keep in mind that wifi use under iOS 4.0 seems to be much more intensive for the ipod battery than wifi under iOS 3.x.x.

  • Losing Keychain, WiFi, clock, and last state on battery drain

Recently sent my MacBook Pro (MBP) into the shop to get a new shell put on it. When it was returned, it appears I no longer have Safe Sleep functionality.
    Historically:
Prior to sending the MBP into the shop, if the battery ran low on power, I would receive the standard issue "plug-in to a power source" message. I would save my documents and continue to use the MBP unless, of course, power was readily available. If the battery drained to the point of entering "Safe Sleep" mode, the screen would immediately go black. When I finally plugged into a power source and hit the power button, the "restoring state" progress indicator would come on screen, and eventually I would be returned to the point I left off...consistent with:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/10328.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757
    *After New Shell:*
Since receiving the MBP back, if I let the battery drain to the point at which it should enter "Safe Sleep" mode, and plug in to a power source I lose the following:
    1. State does not pick up where it left off. Essentially, the computer just shuts down - not enter safe sleep mode.
+After completing reboot (I have Mail, iCal, Safari, and iTunes launch automatically):+
    1. Error message regarding clock, stating that the clock is incorrectly set and to correct: I have to open date & time preferences -> uncheck set date and time automatically -> set the correct time manually (as it seems to be set to the Unix time floor ca. 1969) -> save -> check set date and time automatically.
    2. WiFi password lost: My home WiFi (AirPort Express) does not automatically sign in, I can either re-enter the password and have it save in Keychain again; or, if I can't remember the password, open keychain -> find the network -> display password -> enter admin password -> enter WiFi password into connection dialog - therefore, the password is still stored in keychain, just not being used.
    3. Mail loses keychain passwords as well: When Mail launches it begins asking me for passwords to my email accounts (appears to be based on emails in my inbox) - after entering the passwords multiple times and check "remember password" every time -> force quit (or just quit if the password dialogs stop coming up) -> restart Mail.
    4. Restart iCal and iTunes after connecting to WiFi.
    5. Should be obvious, but want to make sure it is, any other applications I was using or documents I was editing are lost (no previous state information) - similar to shutting down completely (or hard reset).
Today when I tested the workflow again, I did receive the "battery maintenance" warning; however, that has since gone away.
Is this just me? Can anyone duplicate this problem?
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • WiFi loss & battery drain a software issue, not hardware

I wrote the commentary below after installing IOS 7 on a 4S and resultantly losing WiFi entirely and enduring major battery drain issues. After two trips to the Apple store and meeting with their techs at the "genius" bar, I was emphatically told that the issues were entirely hardware related and the only solution was to purchase a new phone. I was told there was nothing more to be done because the hardware was defective... either just use the not-so-smart phone as it is or buy a new smart one.
Well, here's an update on that story. I installed 7.0.4 last night and instantly my WiFi was back on and working. So far today, the battery seems to be back to normal as well, not draining like a giant hole in the levee. I don't know if this will be the same story for anyone else with similar problems. But I can say that the hardware-caused-storyline was bogus. Entirely time coincident with a software update (IOS 7), I lost WiFi and battery. And equally relative to the 7.0.4 update I immediately regained WiFi and battery.
I'm curious if others have experienced this same thing? And if Apple has an official explanation?
    Oct 14, 2013 12:37 PM
I  had a perfectly functioning iPhone 4S (64 GB) that I have been very   happy with and has always been glitch-free, good battery time, no   complaints. Until installing IOS 7.
Among other things, immediately upon "upgrading" to IOS 7 I have lost WiFi entirely (button greyed out).
Next, I found the battery drains to the point where I have to keep it   charging 2-3 times per day with extremely small phone usage. In a  normal  day, with 2-3 text messages, checking email 3-4 times and no  phone  calls, I am down to 30% battery by 3pm. Two days ago I turned  airplane  mode on at 9am with 98% battery and by 4pm batter was at 45%  with  airplane mode still on.
There are other problems, but those are the two primary issues.
I   went to the Apple store two times. The first time the technician   verified my problem, said there was nothing that could be done because   it's a hardware problem now and I would have to buy a new phone at full   price (my current cell contract isn't up until March 2014). He  suggested  a complete phone reset to "new phone" which I did and which  solved  nothing whatsoever. Same issues exist.
On  my second  trip to Apple just yesterday the technician looked it over,  checked the  battery function, etc. and I was told that the battery is  fine but that  the processor or something in the phone is working  overtime and draining  the battery. And again, I was told there is  nothing Apple can do other  than swap out the phone, though, this time  they would replace it for  $199.
I  was tempted to pay the $199 for a new 4S  that the technician said  would come with IOS 6. But so far I have  refused that offer without  some assurance that future IOS upgrades  wouldn't harm that phone as  well. Also, if I paid this now, then I  wouldn't upgrade when my  contract ended with Verizon and I was looking  forward to perhaps  getting a 5S then. I know that it's impossible to  assure that these  upgrade issues won't happen again to the next phone,  which finally  leads me to my questions...
Considering   the options I've been given thus far, what would someone more in the   know suggest I do? Is there any possibility of a software fix or did  the  "upgraded" software probably ruin the hardware?
As   a longtime Apple fan and someone who has owned the first Mac laptop  and  early desktops, I don't understand why Apple doesn't have better   customer service policies regarding their own software directly   affecting their own hardware adversely.

I have the same problem with WiFi and off, the issue was Google Play services, this is what I did settings > apps > all > google play services > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > update the app > check again .

  • T540p battery drain in S4 state after Bios and Intel Wifi driver update

    Hey Guys,
on my T540p, I configured the rapid start technology according to
    http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf
Since I have performed a BIOS update to 2.14  and an update of the Intel Wifi driver to 17.0.5, I experience the problem of battery drain when the computer is in S4 sleep state, at a rate of approximately 0.125% per hour (on the 56Wh battery).
This was not the case before these updates. There was no noticable power drain in S4 sleep state, even not over multiple days.
I'm using Win7, I set all the WoL capabilities both in BIOS and in the Intel driver to disabled, according to
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Battery-drain-when-powered-down-Y410P/td-p...
External device USB charge settings are also fully disabled in BIOS and Power Manager. The problem does not occur when the system is fully shut down, but in S4 Sleep state, which should be a zero-power state too, as it was before the updates. In the details of the BIOS update it is stated " Fixed an issue where the computer might fail to enter sleep state". Could the power drain be a side effect of this fix? Or is it an issue with the (new) Wifi driver, as it was the case for the Y410P?
How could this battery drain be avoided? Has anybody experienced the same issue?
    Best,
    Martin
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    mka1284,
you could check out devices that might resume laptop from the sleep modes and disable them. Type in the following command in the cmd line window:
    powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
Also the following command will show you report about power management. Open cmd window with administrative rights and type in:
    powercfg -energy.

Have been having a lot of battery drain in my ipad and also intermittent wifi

    Mperez3100 wrote:
    Hi,
How can I Test my iPad WiFi & battery? is there a hardware test?
    A real easy test...
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon.  The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A."  The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC.  Do NOT use an iPhone charger.  Do NOT use an iPod charger.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • IPhone wifi bug and battery drain in iOS 8.1

I have an iPhone 5s 32GB and updated it to iOS 8.1
the wifi bug is still there and my battery drains within 4 hours of normal use(no gaming)
the option to chose 2G/3G isnt there too
    any help ?
    Please fix these bugs soon

Power cycle the battery, let it fully drain to where your phone shuts off and then fully charge it without using it.
As for mail if you have it set to push try using manually fetch - the server will only check for emails when you open the mail app, instead of pushing the mail to your phone when you receive one.

  • Lumia 920 - 3G & WiFi - Battery drain and device h...

I have been using my Lumia 920 since February and for the past 3 weeks I have noticed that while using 3G or WiFi the devices heats up a lot and battery drain is rapid.
I am not sure if the charging speed has increased as well, especially when connected to a computer.
I have disabled all apps in the background, NFC is disabled, done a soft reset and done a hard reset. The issue remains.
I am not sure if any update has caused this issue. This however is something I have not experienced previously and is constant now.
I have the 1308 update installed.
Please reply if there are any possble solutions to fix the issue. I do use 3G and WiFi on a daily basis for both professional and personal use.

Sory cjlim, but I cannot see any Nokia Suport tab below. Could you please provide link to the Nokia support? I was actually redirected to this forum from Czech Nokia site through link called "Go to technical support forum".
Anyway, back to the topic. I use multiple apps that are syncing (skype, whatsapp, viber, push notification of emails form exchange server, sync of emails from na imap server every 2 hours, weather app checking wheather 2x a day).
The point is that once my mobile network is set to 2G mobile data (EDGE) the battery stands for almost 2 days which is acceptable battery life. Once I let the phone use 3G mobile data (HSDPA in my case) the phone does not last for even full day. And I am using the phone in absoluely the same way in both cases. Hence I cannot imagine that a application would be killing battery only when on 3G data but would be behaving nicely when on 2G data.
I must also note that my wifi is always ON (no matter if I am on 2G or 3G) so the data transmission should primarilly be done via wifi, right? And even if I am whole day home (working from home office) connected to home wifi network the battery is draining fast when mobile data are allowed on 3G (when on 2G everything is fine).
I wonder if some hardware component responsible for 3G data communication could be faulty in my Lumia820 (considering not so many people are experiencing this issue)?

  • Poor battery life and WiFi connectivity on iPhone 5s

I have bought a new iPhone 5s 16GB running iOS 8.1.2 3 days ago. The device that I have got has a poor battery life and WiFi connectivity. I have tried lots of methods given on the internet like turned off the auto-brightness, reset the phone to default settings.
Then contacted the Apple Care for battery issue. They asked for the diagnostics to check the problem. They said its happening because of the crash of inbuilt app Springboard asked me to try "Set up as new iPhone". Even after doing all these, I am still getting battery not more than 4 hours.
This is not expected from Apple. Such an awful experience on my first iPhone buying.

Are there any special Iphone 5 low battery settings with wifi? Today I  was using my iphone and the wifi magically turned off by itself. I  figured it was just having trouble finding the wifi so I went to my  settings to see what was going on. Somehow it turned itself off. I'm  guessing this is because I had a low battery. I just got the battery  message saying my phone had reached 20% battery a few minutes before  that happened. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

Yes, and you would have had that answer had you bothered to search this forum before posting.
Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.

I final piece for me in the jigsaw following on from this
    http://www.care4pcs.co.uk/2012/10/how-to-be-happy-gmail-user-on-iphone-or.html
is to turn off wifi when you do not need it. When I leave the house I turn off wifi, because the majority of the times when my iPhone has got very hot and crashed is when I am away from home. I suspect that if the iPhone is in the vicinity of public wifi (wheather secure or not secure) it will try and connect, even if you have 'automatically join known networks' set to off. This is easy of course if you have an unlimited data contract for your iPhone. I may be wrong, but it is working for me. It makes sense for me because it is another way of reducing the work the processor (and battery) has to do and therefore reduces the chance of overheating.
Having said that, I never had this problem with my iPhone 4. I now have a 4S.
Try it. Hope it works for you.
