Battery drains after Mavericks installation
Hello,
My Macbook pro, early 2011, seems consuming double battery power since the installation of mavericks.
I discharged the battery completely and fully recharched it but the problem remains.
Before installing mavericks the battery lasted for at least 6 hours depending of the system charge.
Even if the battery remaining time show much more, since the installation of mavericks the battery doesn't last any longer then 3 hours:
To save some battery I also disabled bluetooth on my system, but it doesn't help.
Below some info about my energy saving config:
Some of my system info gathered with EtreCheck:

Below my energy saving config:
My MB goes into sleep mode as configured in the energy saving config.
When i close the lid, it is definitely going in sleep mode.
I'm verry sensible to noise, so I can hear when any ventilator blows or if the hd is moving.
Anyway, the reduction of battery life is when continuously working on the system (so no sleep mode in between).
Your remark concerning Sophos is pertinent, but it was already present before installing mavericks.
It may consume a little bit, but it doesn't seem the problem when I look at the cpu.
I'll try to reset the SMC but if that would cause the problem I should have certain phenomena that aren't present for the moment.
A fan continously blowing, video card not switching correctly, or any other issue that could consume power.
I can say that I'm pretty conscious of how my system works and what could be wrong, but this time I don't get it
Thanks for your help!

Battery Problems After Mavericks installation
So i have a MacBook Pro 8.1. Before i installed mavericks (under mountain lion) i was getting about 4.5 hrs on a full charge (90% brightness). After installing Mavericks i've had several problems.
Immediately, I received a "service battery" error. I never had that problem before.
Battery life seems to be jumping all over the place. One minute it will say that i have 30% left (and literally within a span of a min of two) it will drop to 17%. (with no noticeable app draining the battery - as confirmed by activity monitor).
The time remaining indicator takes about 5 min to indicate how much time left this is in contrast to booting in safe mode (where the indicator showed right away).
Battery life seems about the same (i.e. on a full charge i see it at about 4 hrs - but then it quickly drops 3.5 and than back up and then back down)
I did the following to see if i could "fix" the problem.
a complete battery cycle (calibration). - this seemed to get rid of the "service battery" indicator at least
a PRAM reset (x2)
an SMC reset (x2)
Disk / Permission verify and repair (no problems)
I booted off a 2nd internal HD which had a copy of Mountain Lion. The above problems were nonexistent which leads me to believe that this problem is specific to Mavericks.
p.s. and No Spotlight (or any particular process) isn't consuming a large amount of energy.
All that being said, anyone have any suggestions? At this point i can't trust how much time i really have on my battery.
For what it's worth i have installed a 3rd party SSD. I noticed on a few different discussions that being a common thread with others having the same problem.I have exactly the same problem with an MacBook Pro 8.2 for first time some days after a clean Mavericks installation.
I dont have a 2nd internal HD installed.

Massive Battery Drain After Mavericks Upgrade on 11" 2013 MacBook Air?
I got my Air about month before Mavericks came out and the battery life was amazing on it. I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App, along with Power Point and MS Word. After the upgrade to Mavericks, it was slow but I started to notice that my battery life during classes was draining so much faster than before and I had not added anything 3rd party software, just the upgrade. I am now down to about 3.5 - 4.5 hours of battery life doing about the same things as before the upgrade. I did a couple of apps and I added (Sims 3 game). However, I have yet to touch it because of the diminished battery life.
I have included a copy of my Etrecheck, can somone take a look and let me know if you think I need to clean something off?
I did do the SMC reset and that seemed to to give a little juice (like putting new tire on your car but still not where it was before the Mavericks upgrade) as I am up to about 6 hours of battery life after the SMC reset.
Please let me know what other information you might need from me that would help and thank you so much!!

Not sure why but I had a hard time finding all of the related files to get rid of Origin. But I think I finally got them. I just uninstalled Flash and Chrome. I don't like Safari but all well. I suppose I can deal with it it until Apple fixes this battery issue and then maybe I can go back to Chrome. Safari isn't too happy with certain websites, under the Preferences/Security there is an error message that reads "Google Safe Browsing Service Is Not Available. Has not been updated in 8 days."
Haven't noticed a change in battery since doing all of this so let me know if it will take a couple of days to reset. Or if you see anything else that I can do to help. Thank!

Rapid battery drain after Mavericks Install
Hey everyone,
I've spent a lot of time reviewing the existing threads and haven't been able to pinpoint a solution to my issue. I upgraded my late 2008 MacBook Aluminum 2.4 GHZ to Mavericks, and noticed considerable battery drain. I made an appointment at the Apple Store to do a clean install of Mavericks, and this seemed to help but as I installed software required to access internet at school (SafeConnect, AnyConnect VPN, Avast) my battery life has gone down again. Also, the battery drains when the computer is supposed to be in sleep mode. I have a new battery on board (127 cycles, my cycle count has increased a lot due to this battery drain issue). Does anyone have an idea of what could be the offending software and provide me potential alternatives?
Some numbers for reference: With Snow Leopard I have 3.5 hrs of battery life, and after my initial clean install I had 3.5 hrs of battery life (so no improvement, but no worse performance either..). Now I am lucky to make 2 hrs with a full charge.

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro
Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
ThanksHey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
Increase disk space
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version

Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after maverick installation
Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after maverick installation. What should I do to recover?
I did try co reinstall windows but it make the installation new (nothing remain from the previous). Old windows partition seems lost.Hi Jack.........ok ive managed to create a link to that video on how to install bootcamp.....this is the tutorial i used and i managed to gain 100% completion on bootcamp 1st time no messing......like i said in my previous reply did you save the windows support files from apple....(Critical).....ok no point in messing about i suggest you start again from scratch........these are the things i used and YOU will need to complete bootcamp
mem stick or cd-r / dvd-r......original copy disc of win 7 ...i never used an iso i used original disc....allow a minimum of 30gb of space for your win 7 partition.....if you want bootcamp so you can use big programs like windows based games i.e.....Crysis/Call of duty etc etc ..then you will need to consider that you will need to allow a bigger partition to allow your HD to store the files.....this is the reason i installed bootcamp and so i made my partition i have a 750GB HD so i made a partition of 300gb for windows 7 and left the other 450gb for Mac....so you need to partition enough for what you want bootcamp for remember once you get bootcamp working you will need to install ALL Important Windows updates Including Win 7 SP1......once everything is installed you will have bootcamp up and running lovely.....u can then boot up with either win7 or mac......click this link and watch carefully and do exactly as shown ok and you should be fine...if you have any probs contact me again ok.....let me know how you get on ok..:)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=QFIWtXTl4d0&NR=1 -
Heavy Battery Drain after updating to 8.1 Lumia Cy...
After updating my Lumia 1520 to 8.1 Cyan update, the battery drain is very high. The battery is lasting only for 6 to 7 hours when the data traffic is on (under mixed use of 2G and 3G modes). I have noticed few other users were also experiencing heavy battery drain after the Cyan update.
Will there be an update to fix this battery drain issue?
When the phone was in WP 8 Lumia Black update, battery backup was around 24-30 hrs (when data traffic was on).
What will be the workaround for this?
Moderator's note: We have provided a subject-related title to help other forum users easily view and respond to this post.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Yep, my 1520 battery drains like a helicopter that's lost it's rotor after this 8.1 update.
I was just boasting last weekend how awesome the battery life was on this phone, I drove 300mi with the GPS w/navigation, did some tethering to my laptop for work, went overnight..no charging, used lightly all the next day, few pictures, email, browsing, phone calls, and drove 300mi back on GPS/navigation and I still had 38% battery left.
I updated to 8.1 sunday night, and on my normal commute to a customer in another state, which under 8.0 would have drained oh...mabey 4-5%, I was at 62% by the time I got to this customer yesteday.
All I did was make a phone call, that's it. All background stuff is not allowed. location off, cortana off, ...still drains.
Bad bad bad news. I'm not seeing much usefull ness out of 8.1, and considering the battery life and no real new features....just gimmicks if you ask me, I'm not sure I want to stay at 8.1 . I'm trying to give it a chance...battery life is still better than my POS samsung androids I've had in the past, but knowing how good it really can be...and no real features in 8.1 (I was hopeing they'd fix the imap email not allowed to map sent/trash/inbox issue)....eshh...what a mess it seems. -
Enormous battery drain after 3.01 upgrade
guys and gals,
anyone of you experiencing a huge spike in battery drain after upgrading to firmware 3.01? On 3.0 my iphone 3gs had no probs but after my upgrade last night he ran out of juice within a few hours while I was sleeping. This morning I recharged it but an hour later the phone is allready down to 80% and feeling warm. I guess there is something running in the background but I cant figure out what. Turning the phone on/off doesnt seem to do a thing. Any ideas or personal experiences?I did what you said in your 2nd post, and recharged the battery. after 6 hours, it was the charge was still at 100%!
then I used an app, IM+ Push for a few minutes and had disabled the Push functionality before quitting it. after an hour, I noticed that the battery issue was back. so deleted the said app, and the battery levels returned to normal.
This evening I re-installed the app, disabled the push functionality again and made sure to set my IM account to off before quitting. the problem hasn't re-occurred since then.
hope that this helps someone else who's having the same issue. -
Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.
Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
problem.
Many thanks.
MarcoThanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

Battery drain after update to 10.2
i noticed high battery drain after i have updated to 10.2. i charged phone to 100% yesterday at 16:00 and now 17h later it is 61%. - i wrote 4 sms'es, 1 short phone call, and that's all. i tried restart few times, checked out if network settings are same as before, nothing helps.
battery application is estimating discharging speed at level of 1% every 24 min. before at the same usage it was at least 50 mins. i heard 10.2 has better battery efficiency, but not for me. anyone has similar experiences after update?Double check that your Network settings are how you want them as after an upgrade they have a habit of changing.
On my Verizon phone it redefaulted to Global which really burned my battery instead of limiting it to LTE/CDMA, once I changed it back battery life was back (or better) than previously. -
Battery drains after upgraded to ios5
battery drains after upgraded to ios5 my iphone4
With iOS 5.0 battery life was terriable. Apple quickly fixed it with 5.01. Now with 5.1 battery life is back to terrible. I could go at least two days without a charge. After the update (and all my patterns and behaviors being the same), I don't even get a full day! Apple needs to fix this! Or allow us to go back to iOS 5.01.

Battery drain after updating to iOS 5.1.1
After doing the update to iOS 5.1.1 the phone is getting hot "warm" near the processor and the battery drains about 1% per 10 mins in standby and 10X when running an app. Meaning that the phone will run about 6 hours when it used to run for 48 hours on a charge. When putting the phone in airplane mode battery life appears normal. Following others that have reported this issue, I've done a Reset All Settings and two Erase All Content and Settings then restored from back up. Unfortuately what worked for others has not worked for me...
Took the phone to the Apple store and was told by the genius that there are no issues with the update and that location servers were to blame. Explaining over and over and over again that none of those settings have changed and that the only thing that changed was the update I got no answers, just more frustrated.
Currently I have all location services off and wifi off but still have the same problem.
Looking to either find the magical reset sequence that others have has success with or just roll back the update.
Help.Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss) -
IPad 2 battery drain after iOS 5.0.1 update!!!
iPad 2 battery is draining way too fast after the 5.0.1 update - I've lost over 10% just browsing the apple site over wifi for about 10 minutes - with no other apps running. NOT ACCEPTABLE APPLE!!!
Same issue with my iPhone 4 that went from 62% when I went to bed last night to completely dead this morning - unused!!
Apple - roll 5.0 back out to replace this battery leech. I need to be able to actually USE my products.Shirley 123 wrote:
Same issue here! I've been reading on my fully-charged iPad and the battery is down to 78%. Never did this before the latest update. Yesterday, iPad quit before my usual evening reading! Any solutions!
I have personally seen the problem and corrected it on numerous models now including the 4S, 4, 3GS and iPad 2s. Corrupt system level settings created by an iOS 5 bug in the original release that caused battery recalibration issues, etc. Just installing the update does not fix the issue in most cases (sometime it initially can be worse). You need to clear out those settings and recalibate the battery. For those still having the "standby battery drain" issue follow the procedure below in order. It does fix the problem in most cases.
Go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:
1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)
2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). At this point, Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)
3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd
4. Fully discharge battery (tilll it shuts off with the spinning wheel)
5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)
In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

517 MB Page-outsYou have been up for ~17 days, and you have 1.72GB of pageouts. That averages out to one page every 3 seconds, and we will assume you re not working 24/7, so when you are using your Mac you are spending a lot of time paging to disk. Disks are slow.
As Kappy says, you are either concurrently running too may RAM hungry apps, or you have some apps that really want lots of RAM and you are running them a lot day after day. Either "Stop That!", or get more RAM.
You could also consider a Solid State Disk, but that is not as good as having real RAM and would be more expensive than RAM unless you Mac is max'ed out on RAM. Of course you could do both. More RAM and an SSD
If you want to see the paging for yourself, start an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, and run the command:
sar -g 60 100
which will report the pageout stats every minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suit your tastes).
Now use your Mac as your normally would, including the times when it is running slow. After you have experienced the slowness, go back and look at the 'sar' output. If you have mostly zeros with maybe a trivial blip every once in awhile, that is noise and not a paging issue. If you have some high numbers, then you are paging heavily at that time. If you have sustained paging, even if small value, it is going to affect your performance. High numbers will affect your performance even more.
