Battery drains while sleeping after RAM upgrade

Installed 16 GB of RAM and a Hybrid/SSD 1 TB internal HD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2012 and now the battery drains while the computer is in sleep mode, about 1-3 % per hour. Before the RAM upgrade (stock 4 GB of RAM) there was no noticeable battery drain, so I assume it has to do with the upgrade. I read that it takes more power to maintain 16 GB of RAM during sleep, so my questions are as follows:
Is 1-3% per hour normal?
Will resetting the SMC help the issue?
Does the Hybrid HD have anything to do with this?
I am not too happy about the battery drain as it happens that I don't use my laptop for some time and prior to the upgrade the loss of battery charge was not an issue at all. Is this the price I have to pay for maxing out my RAM or is there a way (resets, settings, etc) to reduce the amount of battery loss
Thanks for your input.

Hi everybody. I have the same question. I have a macbook unibody late 2008. I have recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite. In order to have a smoother functioning of the system I have immediately replaced my original 2Gb (1+1) RAM with 8 Gb (4+4). Since then, I have noticed a dramatic reduction of my battery charge during sleep mode. Now after 8 hours of sleep it goes from 100% to around 65% (before it was 95%). Is it a natural consequence of having installed a larger RAM or there could be anything wrong with my settings?
I have read a couple of articles about standby mode and standbydelay setting but this does not apply to my model of macbook.
Here is my pmset -g result:

  • MacBook Air 2012 Severe Battery Drains While Sleeping

    Hi there,
This isn't any new but I've looked through all posts I could.
I got a refurbished MacBook Air 2012 in July. In the first 2 weeks it worked fine (or I was noticed).
Then I noticed the battery drains fast while the system sleeps.
I have done tests in the past weeks; almost 20% of battery drain after slept a day.
I have tried everything I could: turn off PowerNap, no wake from BT devices, erase and reinstall OS
    None of above helped.
I have tried to modify hibernatemode to 25 and it worked ok; 2% of battery dropped after 12 hours.
I took this to Apple in Taiwan and they told me they couldn't do anything about it because they think it's software conflicts which does't really have a solution but wait for OS updates. They did run a diagnostic and everything turns out to be fine.
I just did reinstall the OS again and I'll see whats going on tomorrow morning.
If still not getting better I will just use hibernatemode 25.
Anything recommandation is more than welcome.
    Thanks.
    My OS version is 10.8.3.

Tried hibernatemode to 25 and still not helpful at all.
Battery drained 8% after 10 hours of sleep while mode 25 should put my macbook air into deep sleep and consume very minimal power.

  • Macbook pro wont sleep after ram upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi fatlinesofcode,
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • IPod Touch 3rd Gen: Battery Draining very rapidly after iOS4 upgrade.

    Hello All,
    Sorry for the long post:
I was wondering if others are experiencing this issue as well? I have a 3rd gen ipod touch 64gb.
Prior to the iOS4 upgrade my battery life was very decent. I would easily go a couple(2) days before requiring a full charge on the device even with modest internet, game and music use. As a rule I keep my back light as low as I can stand to conserve battery unless I'm in direct sunlight and have no choice but to bump it up in order to see.
After the iOS4 upgrade my battery life has been drasticly reduced. Going even 24 hours without plugging the device in is totally out of the question and in many cases I find myself having to plug the device into my laptop or car pretty much any chance I get in order to have uninterupted use of the device while I'm out and about. Although I've never timed my actual use, my usage habbits have not changed as far as I'm concerned.
I went so far as to exchanging the device at my local bestbuy as I purchased the blacktie protection plan which grants me an exchange of the device for "any" reason; be it manufaturer defect, accidental breakage, or anything really short of losing it. The replacement was a brand new non refurb ipod which I synced and charged fully upon bringing it home. To my suprise, the battery life is just as bad as the ipod I just turned in. I have yet to downgrade to iOS3 but am considering it if only to see if I suddenly see a great improvement of the battery life.
If anyone is having the issue or has some suggestions other then downgrading please comment. If this is an "unknown" bug/issue/flaw in iOS4 I'm sure apple would like to know about it and I'm assuming they monitor these forums for reports of these issues.
    Thanks!

Dig into your settings. iOS7 defaults a lot of stuff on that you may not need. Such as tons of notifications, background app updates, background app refresh. Turn extra stuff off and see if that helps.

  • Lumia 820 / battery drain while charging

I have the Lumia 820 with the Navigon navigation app installed.  I went on a trip this past weekend and noticed a strange battery drain while driving to my destination. The drive was a little over 2 hours and I was charging the phone the whole time. I figured I would test it on the drive home. I charged the phone completely before starting the drive home. I was camping so I had to use the lighter jack in the car which is always on and charged the phone from less then 10% to 100% overnight.  Again the drive was a little over 2 hours, had the Navigon app open and running the whole time and the phone was plugged into the lighter and the charging icon was registering a charge the whole time.  The only other thing running was cellular data. NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, Nokia Drive, all off. When I arrived home the phone was at 45% and was very hot.
I upgraded from the Samsung Focus and using the Navigon app in the same car never ever had less power when I  I ended a trip to when I started a trip.  I use the Navigon app all time so this is a real issue.  I am also going to post this on the Navigon website.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

I didn't have any problem with charging the phone, but I have another problem with the battery, I noticed that sometimes my battery started to drain so fast (I mean from 100 to 10 in less than 2 hrs!!!), even when I'm not using the phone! and when I pick the phone the area on the right hand side of the rear camera (which I believe the CPU located) is warm (it's not hot but warmer than rest of the phone). I managed my background tasks, etc. but didn't work. It seems that there is bug which sometimes the OS won't release (terminate) the processes (even after closing the app). I tried turn the phone on/off but didn't work until uninstalling the last application that just installed or opened. It happened 3-4 times and the last one was today when I opened my Nokia Music. At first I thought may be it's because of the 3G usage, but even after switching to the X-Box music to stream from my Micro-SD card the battery was draining fast.

No. You can't preserve just part of RAM.

The battery drained while using the computor so we pluged it in but computor will still not fully turn on.

Why is my battery draining so quickly after updating to Mavericks?

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.9 or later.
    3. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    4. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

This setting is designed to help conserve the health of your battery if you tend to use your laptop while plugged in.  It's not good for the battery to be held at 100% for long periods of time, so instead this setting stops chargins when the battery reaches 60% to prevent battery damage.

  • Battery drain while using Safari after 8.2 ios upgrade?

Anyone else having battery drain issues after upgrading to 8.2? When I use Safari a lot, I notice the battery drains quickly. I see that the Safari loading icon is often animated.
Also, I saw a suggestion to turn off motion and fitness tracking or something in the privacy settings, but I don't see that option in my iPhone 5. Can this be turned off on iPhone 5?
iOS 8.2 has been terrible for me. How was this allowed to get out of beta? Dictation is screwed up in Safari, and it doesn't fix the longstandig copy and paste bug (in Safari the cut/select/copy options disappear after half a second) nor does it fix the atrocious way that Safari reloads tabs when you toggle between them. The tabs didn't used to reload every time before ios 8. The reloading of the Safari tabs makes you lose anything you have written in forms on Safari pages.
Apple really needs to get its act together. The software has been so much less reliable than in previous years. Are the beta testers even doing their jobs?
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions about the battery drain issue or anything else mentioned here, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

  • Battery Drain Iphone 6 after Upgrade to IOS 8.3

    Hi,
After upgrading my IPhone 6 from IOS 8.2 to IOS 8.3 couple 2 days ago, I'm keeping the IPhone on power adapter, unbelievable battery drain.
I did everything I can to prevent running out of battery:
    - Brightness
    - Background applications
    - Reset all settings
    - Select the carrier manually, by the way I have a 4S still on 8.1 the Carrier is showing full bar and the IPhone 6 is showing 2 bars out of 5 only.
    - I restored the IOS 8.3 from ITunes again
    - The funniest thing that I’ve set it to airplane mode but the same, what it means that the carrier and wireless are not consuming the battery life only it is something related to IOS 8.3
I check the applications consuming the battery, the surprise was when not using the iPhone it is showing the “Home Lock Screen”.
Any Idea if there is a fix for this issue, or any news about a new IOS fix that will be released soon?
Or should I be connected always to the power adapter?
    Regards.

Yes, I have the same problem. Before upgrading to 8.3, my iPhone 6 battery can last 2 days. However, with 8.3, I have to charge my phone every 12 hours. It seems the problem is from the background applications, cause the battery keeps dropping quickly even if I don't use the phone. I have turned the background applications refreshing off to see if it would fix it temporarily.

  • My battery drains really quickly after upgrading to OS X Yosemite

I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite.   After doing so, my battery drains VERY quickly.  About 1 percent per minute.   Is there any fix for this?   Can I roll back my OS?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
