How long on average do internal lithium-ion batteries li've, specifically those found in Creative players such as the ZVM? What would be a rough number of recharges possible before the battery fails, and does the life-span of the battery depend on chronological time as well as number of recharges? Should a battery outli've a hard dri've or vice versa? Also is the life of a hard dri've potentially infinite if it is treated with care? If so, what can be done with a ZVM whose battery has died, but whose hard dri've still works?

1. Time Capsules are the easiest device to setup for Time Machine.
2. Sorry this is unclear. There are a huge number of routers available that have far superior controls than apple routers.. some support Time Machine.. most don't. They negate your question 1. in being difficult to setup. And alot of 3rd party devices that claim Time Machine compatibility are unreliable.
3. Encryption is irrelevant.

MBP suddenly doesn't find my external hard drive when plugged into the USB port

Last night I worked on some wedding photo editing and let the laptop battery run all the way down forgetting to eject my Seagate external hard drive. I got the message when I booted it today that I didn't properly eject. Now it won't "see" the hard drive in any of the USB ports, but the hard drive is lit up so juice is going to it. Any ideas how to fix this one?

Open Disk Utility first.
Insert the drive.
If it appears in Disk Utility, use First Aid (Repair Disk)
This should be called (Repair Directory).
If it does not fix everything on the first try, run it again until it fixes everything or gets stuck.
Report any remaining error messages.
Consider getting an external Power supply for that drive.

I am using the Premiere Pro CS5 NLE (with the 5.0.4 updates), and I have tried to reinstall the software (which is actually the Production Premium package) several times, but I still cannot use the spacebar (or any method) to play any of my imported videos.

Prior to having to replace my hard drive, my software was working just fine. No problems at all. But now, it seems that I can't get it to play whatever type of file I import.
Again, I am a newbie to the Mac, so any and all correctional/repair assistance needs to be expalined as if I were a child : )
I would hate to try to revert to considering the sophmoric Final Cut Pro X editing software package, but I've got to do something to be able to get back to my editing activities.

Recovery Mode presents you with, among other things, Disk Utility. When you open that, if the internal shows up at all, first try to "Repair DIsk." If that doesn't work but if the "Media" line is present, try to format and partition it with a GUID partition table (understand that you will be erasing the contents of your internal). Then try to reinstall the OS. If that doesn't work, and since your Retina MBP didn't come with a DVD drive or DVDs, you'll need to try a hardware test using these instructions from Apple (short version: shut down, press the power button and hold down the "D" key). Have a nx9600 and when it tries to reboot, the hard drive light comes on, the 2 lock lights flash

At boot, the hard drive light comes on, the 2 lock lights flash simultanously (A and 1 ) , 2 of the 3 fans come on, then it appears to turn off. It will sit in a loop through the reboot process until the power and the battery have been removed.
Have replaced the drive and the center fan. The replaced fan is new and an HP fan. When I have been able to get it to boot , loaded windows and linux on the new drive.
If it sits long enough and you pray it may reboot. Once I turned it upside down and it rebooted.
Have had the system up and running for hours with no problem, then have to reboot or a shutdown and won't reboot.
Suggestions ?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

HP Pavillion DV7t Battery & Hard-Drive

My battery has been dead for a few months now and I just have been running it off of the charger cord. I've finally found a battery that will fit my laptop and is at a decent price, but that leads to my first question.
1.) Running your battery on straight charger power; is that going to decrease the overall performance of the laptop as there is no power reserver to pull extra juice if needed?
I've noticed my computer has been sluggish and freezes up every so often and I was wondering if the lack of power could do that?
If not, is it the hard-drive?
2.) Every so often, (like once every 2-3 months, maybe more) my laptop will start up and I get the "Windows needs to check for Disk Consistency", I let it run, but I've never seen it dish out any errors or warn me that my hard-drive may be failing.
When the chkdsk program runs, does that mean it recognizes that the hard-drive may be failing?
I haven't noticed any file corruptions, weird sounds, any of the obvious signs that my hard-drive was failing.
Also, what size is my hard-drive? I looked at the Manual and it says 70mm which is 2.7inch but the Hard-Drive I was contemplating replacing it with is 2.5. Would that fit?

3.) Like I said, my computer is feeling sluggish, so I feel like it'd be a good time to maybe just wipe my computer and start out fresh. I've looked online and really haven't found any decent answers.
Is there a way to fully wipe my computer yet leave the OS (Windows 7) in tact?
I've went into the HP Recovery Manager and I can create a Boot Disk for my computer that would re-install the Hard-Drive if I did get a new one/fully wipe it, but unfortunately, the DVD+R cd's I have aren't compatible for some reason.
Anyway, hopefully someone can answer atleast one of my questions!

The dead battery is not causing the performance issues. Power comes from either the battery OR the AC adapter; not both so the battery does not serve as a reserve of any kind.
The hard drive is more likely or it may just be a clogged up operating system. I first suggest a hard drive diagnosis from the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up and go into setup (BIOS) and look for the hard drive test. Run the long version and see if you get any errors. If the drive is OK, you might want to try CCleaner, a disk defragmentation, shutting off unnecessary startup programs and a full Malwarebytes scan; i.e. the typical computer "tuneup" and if that does not help then a wipe and restore of Windows.

Hard Drive Life Expectancy

I am looking to replace a two year old Dell laptop with an Apple Mac Book. I have replaced the hard drive in the Dell three time due to failure. What is the typical life expectancy of a hard drive in an Apple laptop?

The life expectancy of any hard drive is unrelated to the computer. Here's some things to consider:
Lower priced drives come with three year warranties while the more expensive "enterprise" models come with five year warranties. Apparently drive makers think that represents the expected lives of the drives or they would provide longer warranties.
Manufacturer data suggests the drives will last upwards of 100 years, but there's certainly no evidence that any of them ever have. Google did a study that showed nearly 30 percent of all drives in service at their server farms failed annually.
If you're lucky the drives last longer than you keep the computer. I've yet to have a drive failure before I replaced the drives for other reasons. So, I guess I'm lucky.

Can someone tell me the largest or rather the highest cell battery I can use on my Z61T? I was told by an untrusted source it could only take up to a 6 cell - would that be true? and I was told I can only install safely a 320gig Hard drive. Is this the case as well?

I believe that the largest battery for Z61t was a 7-cell unit.
You can install any 9.5mm/2.5" SATA laptop drive, be it 320, 500 or 750GB.

Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
3. Go to
Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.

I get error 8062 when trying to copy files from one external hard drive to another. It starts out copying files, but after 10 minutes or so it stops and I get the error 8062. The hard drive tech support says the problem is in my Macbook Air.

I cannot copy my doc and photos and videos from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive -- both plugged in to my MacBook Air -- I get Error 8062 and the copying (which seemed to be going on for 10 minutes) stops and nothing gets copied.
As any Macbook Air owner knows, there is SO LITTLE storage capacity on the computer that you have to back up big files onto an external hard drive to avoid getting the other annoying error that says you have no more memory/storage capacity/whatever the proper term is, and you cannot use the computer.
Backstory: Before this error cropped up, I had backed up lots of files to an external drive and then removed them from my computer. But then the external hard drive got corrupted and I could not access my entire photo library. Had to pay $850 to Kroll Ontrack to recover those files. I have now bought 2 new external 1 Terrabyte hard drives as protection against another such disaster. BUT I cannot copy the files from the first hard drive where all my reovered files now sit, to another backup hard drive.
Feeling vulnerable. Please help.

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

IF I install FCP on another internal hard drive but boot off the other drive?

There is something I don't understand
When you have 2 hard drives and one has the OS and you decide to clone that onto a second internal hard drive, what happens to the applications in that second drive? Do you have to reboot and re-start from that second hard drives "startup disk" to use those applications
The reason being is this. Right now I have the OS in one drive but I'd like to install a second hard drive, clone the OS but also intsall Final Cut Pro on that second drive, so everything that I do as far as editing is contained within that second drive
What I'm getting at is, can I still use Final Cut Pro Application in that second drive even though I started up the computer up from the first drives startup disk?
Or would it be better to buy a large drive, like a 2TB and just partition the Final Cut Pro within that drive?

Although that second drive would not be "running" per se, wouldn't FCP still work as a stand alone in that drive? Or no?

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!
