Battery Has the charging sign in it, but in brackets says (not charging)

When the mains line is plugged in it works fine, but when you take it out the laptop just turns off, the battery also says (Not Charging) and when clicked says 0% battery.
I'd like to know if this is to do with a dead battery, which is easily replaceable or something within the computer, because my friend had the same but on his battery it had a X/cross shape.
Any feedback will be VERY helpful thanks.

The easiest way to tell if the issue is with your battery or the computer is to take a known good battery and put it in this computer. Alternatively you can take this battery and put it in a MacBook that you know to be working correctly.
Best of luck.
