Battery & Leads between iMac/Macbook

Love my new MacBook, good spec and delivered in 24 hours, great display.
Three questions...
1) With regard the battery. The manual and promo's tell me the battery will last 5 hours, depending on 'usage'. I've charged it for the second time this morning and it was telling me it was charged for 5 hours or more. Switched it on to use on the train into work with Vodafone dongle attached. Used the internet for 25 minutes, no big downloads or anything, and the battery is already down to 2 hours and 50 minutes left. What are others finding with the new MacBook battery or does it need a few charges to reach its full capacity?
2) With regard connecting with my iMac. My iMac has various ports including USB2 and Firewire and connects to various back up devices. Obviously I'm aware my iMac can 'talk' to my MacBook via Bluetooth. However, to move large files between the two computers, such as video files which are at least 5gigabytes in size, what leads do other MacUsers recommend, bearing in mind as we know, that the MacBook only has USB2 ports.
3) It is disappointing not to have the Firewire port on the new MacBook as that's how I download from my video camera onto my iMac. However, I've ordered a new lead which is USB2 to mini-DV which will suffice. Have others found this adequate?

From a Google search:
"Compatibility with Current FireWire Products
FireWire 800 provides two modes of transmission:
1. The pure beta mode (a FireWire 800 device connected to a FireWire 800 port with a FireWire 800 beta cable)
2. The backward-compatible legacy mode (a FireWire 400 device connected to a FireWire 800 port or vice versa with a FireWire 800/FireWire 400 bilingual cable)
FireWire 400 devices use a 6-pin or 4-pin connector while FireWire 800 devices use a 9-pin
connector. Existing FireWire 400 devices can be plugged into either type of port with the appropriate cable. FireWire 800 devices can achieve FireWire 800 speeds only when connected to a FireWire 800 port."

There has been lots of discussion of the new MacBook not having firewire. I speculate that it was Apple's approach to keep a gap between the MB and the MBP now that the MB has other MPB features (improved video, backlit keys, etc.).
MB meets my needs (never used FW in two plus years of owning an original MB) but I don't use firewire devices. If I ever need to my desktop will accommodate them.

  • Transfer Hard Drives Between iMac & MacBook

Hello! I have an iMac that I was using for personal and a MacBook that I was using for business... I now need to switch my uses and need to transfer all applications, files, documents, photos, etc (basically just switch entire hard drives) between the two computers... I don't even know where to begin?!? There's not a whole lot on either computer... but the files are very important...
Does anybody know of the easiest and quickest way to go about this?!? Please let me know!
Also, does anybody know if it's possible to set up an ipod nano on 2 computers? My desktop and laptop??
    Thanks a Bunch!!!

I'll try the first questions. In some situations you could hook up your MacBook with a firewire cable in Target Disk mode to the iMac and clone or migrate your system directly from one computer to the other. However in your situation you don't want to erase the files from either machine. It's also not a good idea to clone one system directly to the other because they are totally different machines that may have different drivers included in the initial OS install. So this is what I suggest.
    1) Use an external drive to back up one or both of your systems. If the drive is large enough to partition it into 2 partitions then clone the iMac to one partition and clone the MacBook to the other partition. Otherwise you could still do it by just cloning one system. Use Carbon copy cloner or SuperDuper to make the clone.
    2) If you have both imaged cloned to the external connect it to one of the machines and run the Migration assistant to migrate the User files and Applications from the external system that you want. For example, connect the external to the iMac, run migration assistant, and choose to migrate the user files from the MacBook image.
    3) If you are only able to make one backup, lets say you cloned the iMac to the external. Keep the external on standby. Power down your MacBook and connect it to your iMac with a FireWire cable. Hit the power button and hold down the "T" key to boot it into target disk mode. The MacBook's internal drive should now show up on the desktop of your iMac. Run the Migration Assistant from your iMac and choose the MacBook drive to Migrate from.
    4) If the previous step was successful(I would test everything thoroughly) then connect the external drive to your MacBook and run the Migration Assistant to migrate the User files from the external to your MacBook.

  • Mail malfunctioning in different ways between iMac, MacBook pro and iPhone

I yesterday purchased an iMac from a friend and under her recommendation installed OS ML on both it and my MacBook Pro.
Now mail and the syncing between the three is being completely whacky; it works fine on my MacBook pro, on my iPhone i have emails from the last two days then it skips to emails from 2010, on my iMac on the other hand, all the emails appear to be fine in the subjects, but then the contents of the email are completely screwed up, for instance in the body of an Email from the iTunes store with the title 'Your Receipt ####' will actually have the contents of an email a friend sent me in 2007 ?!
What is going on? Also I am really unsavvy so I have no idea if this is something I did??
    HELP!!

Too much going on here to understand. You should break this down into the mail issues for each device and then separately for sycing. Are you using POP email, Exchange, other? How are you syncing? - iCloud, Exchange?
If I had to guess and you are using POP, seems like the iMac had corruption in the mail database either before or during the ML update. I believe ML Mail makes changes to the database the first time it runs. Do you have a backup? You may be able to try again or restore from there.
To understand the sync issue you need to provide more information.

  • Delay in signal between iMac / Macbook iTune to Apple TV

Hello, I am having a problem getting my iMac (Mid 2011, OS X 10.8.2) to Airplay/Mirror with the Apple TV to include getting the iTunes to play audio or movies without the audio sounding choppy and the mirroring having this huge delay in movement.
I also updated my MacBook (Late 2009) with Mountain Lion and I tried Home Sharing iTunes using the Apple TV and I get the same choppy sound out put.
I updated the software of the Apple TV to 5.1 and my iPhone, iPad (Airplaying and Mirroring) works great with it, but as stated above the iMac and MacBook not cutting it. I would really appreciate it if someone can share some feedback with me on this issue.
    Thanx

  • Can I transfer docs between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMac with a PowerPC processor by using a usb cord?

Can I transfer docs/folders between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMAC with a PowerPC processor using a usb cord? Or by loading from the MacBook to a external drive and then to the Imac.

You need to use an external drive, FireWire cable, Ethernet cable, or wireless connection.

    Hi vichochile,
If you are having an issue with syncing your new iPhone with the information that is in iCloiud (and on your other devices) we should make sure that iCloud is set up correctly on the iPhone. See this page for directions -

  • HT4783 I cannot AirDrop files between my MacBook Pro & iMac.

I cannot AirDrop files between my MacBook Pro & iMac even though they both recognize each other when AirDrop is open. When I open a file & choose AirDrop it doesn't allow me to click send. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can only write in NTFS drives in Windows, not OS X or Linux or any other UNIX-based system. If you want to write in NTFS drives, you have to use a third-party application as Paragon NTFS.
Another possibility you have is to format the external drive in a format that OS X can read and write in it, like HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), FAT32 (MS-DOS (FAT)) or exFAT, but this is longer and you need a lot of time to back up your external drive files

since downloading Maverick iCal no longer syncs between my MacBook Pro, my iMac or iPad - how do I rectify this? (my first post ever)

I know Pete, but what if I don't have good internet connection sometimes?
    Imagine:
this morning planning the whole next week with my iMac, bussiness around Europe.
    I must go this evening.
Just now internet line fails in the neighborhood.
Stupid situation, and not so uncommon, cause not all of us are living in Manhattan. (this is what Apple thinks)
Cable must be an option beside iCloud.
    true or not?

  • I have imac, macbook, ipad2, 2 iphone 4s and I want to share music, iphoto and apps between all the devices but keep e-mail and contacts separate and use icloud. How can I do that?

i have imac, macbook, ipad2, 2 iphone 4s and I want to share music, iphoto and apps between all the devices but keep e-mail and contacts separate and use icloud. How can I do that?

The ID for iTunes must be the same on both devices for it to automatically download purchases made on the other phone.
For example, if you have been using [email protected] for iTunes, continue to do so. One of you could also use [email protected] for their iCloud account and the other one use [email protected] for theirs, alternatively you could use [email protected] and [email protected] for the two separate iCloud accounts.

  • How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.

How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.  The folders are using Microsoft programmes as this is compatiable with 90% of my colleagues, therefore I can't use the Icloud service.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • 8-Hr Battery Differences Between MacBook Pro's

I am getting ready to purchase a refurbed 17" MBP, but am a bit confused by Apple's battery designations. For example:
Refurbed MBP 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo $2099
    Battery represented as:
    'Breakthrough battery performance
Every new 17" MBP features an advanced built-in battery that lasts
up to 8 hours on a single charge.'
    ===========
    Refurbed MBP 2.66Ghz Intel Core i7 $2199
    Battery info:
    'One charge. Nine hours.
Since high-performance graphics kick in only when you need them, the battery
in the 15 and 17" MBP can last up to 8-9 hours on a single charge.'
    ===========
My questions - Are these the same batteries? If not, which is?
I am having to trash my old 17" 1.33Ghz laptop because the screen has dimmed so much it is nearly worthless.
    Thanks,
    Phillip Anthony

+*Are these the same batteries? If not, which is?*+
    Which is what?
The main difference in terms of battery performance between those two machines is that the i7 has a more efficient CPU and GPU resulting in slightly better battery life. You shouldn't expect to actually see those numbers in real life under normal use however. But, you should still see slightly better battery performance with the i7. I'm not sure what the other specs are on the two that you posted... but given the other specs being similar, the i7 for $100 is probably a better deal.

  • Why won't the folders in Mail sync consistently across my iMac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone?

Ok, this one is complex; here's the deal.....
I'm using a single Gmail account with Mail on an iMac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone, using Lion and iOS 5. The 4 respective 'Mails' are not synchronising consistently between each other.  Here's what's going on:
Received messages are appearing in all 4 Inboxes.
If a message is deleted from any of the 4 Inboxes, it is deleted from all other Inboxes.
    So far so good. But:
When I create a draft message, or delete a message from the Sent folder - iMac and Macbook sync with each other, and iPad and iPhone sync with each other, but each 'pair' won't sync with the other 'pair'.
But to complicate things further (and this is the one which is driving me up the wall), let's look at the Sent folder:
If I send a message from the iMac or Macbook, the message appears in all 4 Sent folders.
But if I send a message from the iPad or iPhone, those 2 devices will sync their Sent folders, but the message will NOT appear in the Sent folders of the iMAc or MacBook.
So what is going on there? I've spoken to numerous One-to-One staff and Apple technicians on the phone over the last 12 months, we've checked settings, I've deleted and then reinstalled the Gmail account on Mail - but no success.  Please solve this for me!!

The reason I asked is because keying all devices synced is exactly what it is all about.
FYI, You need to use the Mail application, but you do NOT need to use an @me.com account. It support Gmail and other mail servers.
