Battery level dropping under load while plugged in

Hi all,
I'm, the otherwise happy owner of a retina Macbook Pro form July 2014 (with a 85w power supply)
I have the issue that, whenever my computer is under load and uses the discrete graphics card, its dropping power - even though the charger was connected.I know the discrete graphics card uses up more power, but honestly it cannot be true that if I play a game in high settings on the macbook (which only has a keyboard, mouse and charger connected in that case), then the battery drops... It cannot sustain itself or what? (I have never experienced this with any other laptop, so I hope for the love of God, this is not what to expect).
Also, just the other day, I was using 2x external monitors (with their own power supplies), and just watching a Twitch (videogame stream) in a browserwindow on one of the screens, and the charge started dropping, even while plugged in again -- it dropped maybe (a wild guess) 10% an hour or so.
The setup there was: I had iMessage open on the screen on the macbook - nothing else; I had a PDF displayed on the first external screen and I had a browser-window open with a video-stream on the second external screen. A mouse, keyboard, powersupply and 2x videooutputs (1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort), was connected to the macbook at that moment...
I mentioned that I couldnt play anything with high settings, or watch a videostream while using external monitors without draining the battery power to a friend that has had a few macs - he had note experienced it before, and told me to post in here (After we agreed that since the external displays had their own power supplies, they shouldn't be dealbreakers). I'm hoping you can help me shed some light on the issue and help me. If something might need to be sent back to Apple for replacement, I'd rather do it before I personalize it too much.
Thanks alot!

Thanks for the answers I see.... A shame since the 85W charger is by my understanding the highest wattage one Oh well, thanks!

  • N97 mini battery level drops suddenly

I've observed my N97 mini's battery level dropping abruptly from 4 bars to 1 bar (with low battery alarm). The phone's slightly more than a month old and using the latest 11.x.x firmware. Did a bit of googling, and found several suggestions on how to save battery (turn off everything 'smart' on ur phone). That's not the point anyways. I need to find out why the battery level drops suddenly (like what happens when ur battery's dying out), and *not* why the battery lasts X hrs. I'm not sure about this, but I think this mostly happens when the battery level is slightly below max, and I use any app that needs the GPS functionality. But then, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the GPS hardware in the phone, 'coz it usually gets a GPS lock in less than a minute (mostly within seconds). Could it be related to the algo used to show the battery level, or is it that its my battery that's faulty? Any others out there having the same problem?

It's understandable that the batterymeter is not linear (atleast the charge/discharge rates are not). But what bugs me are those sudden erratic drops within minutes (a couple of minutes at times). Anyone who has spent a few days with a dying (rechargeable) battery would know what I'm talking about. It's not a good feeling when u r away from a charge source, and you decide to use one of those power hungry things (like Wifi/GPS) thinking you still have sufficient juice left...and then bam! ... the low battery warning! you just switch off everything, and hope that it lasts till you reach the next oasis. I guess I'd have to analyze this a bit more to understand if its some specific app that causes such behaviour (as mentioned in my original post, i doubt the GPS apps currently). If it happens too often, and even with 'normal' voice+text kind of usage scenarios, its time see Nokia Care I guess. The reason for this post is to know if this behaviour is observed by other N97 mini users as well..then I know there's no point in taking it to Nokia Care.

  • HT1476 Hi, I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 7.0.4 and the phone keeps going of whenver battery level drops to 20% and it give the warning. It turns off immediately after I dismiss the warning message. I LOCKED THE PHONE AT 21% and I was able to play music

Hi, I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 7.0.4 and the phone keeps going of whenver battery level drops to 20% and it give the warning. It turns off immediately after I dismiss the warning message. I LOCKED THE PHONE AT 21% and I was able to play music to 4% which means there is no problem with the battery, this seems to be a programming error.
Earlier suggestion include that the battery has a dead cell but it wouldnt keep playing music for over 2 hours it it had a dead cell.

My issue with IOS 7.1 and higher is my Bluetooth for the phone still works...no problem but the music does not work with bluetooth...I have an Acura TSX 2010...Acura said there are no incidents reported, but me...I just upgraded to IPhone 6 and still no good....as soon as i hit the AUX button it say USB...not bluetooth...ugh

  • MBP June 09: Battery Level Drops from 100% to 99% while plugged in !

    Hi,
I have noticed that the battery level (indicated in the menu bar) drops from 100% (after recharge) slowly to 99%, then 98% while the machine stays plugged in! I did not let it go further so I don't know if it would further discharge.
I re-calibrated the battery and this is still the case.
Does anybody know if this is normal ? I read on the web that this is due to Apple's battery charging algorithm ...
    Thanks for your responses!
    Cheers
    Rainer

Rainer: Your MBP's charging system is designed so that once the battery has been fully charged, charging stops until the battery level falls below 93%. Then charging resumes. All batteries gradually lose charge as time goes by, without any power being drawn from them by usage. A typical notebook battery loses 0.5% to 1% of its charge per day, even when the machine is completely shut down or when the battery isn't in it (as might be the case for a spare battery). A MBP in normal sleep will lose 1-2% of its battery charge per hour, as some power is used to preserve the contents of RAM in that state. In Safe Sleep, the MBP is essentially shut down and no battery power is used at all, so the loss of charge is limited to the base 0.5%-1% per day.
Under extremely heavy loads (high CPU/GPU usage with maximum screen brightness combined with bus-powered portable drive operation, for example), your MBP may need to draw some power from the battery even while AC power is being supplied. Prolonged use under such conditions could, in theory, completely drain the battery, in which case the CPU clock speed would be automatically reduced to limit power demand to what the AC adapter alone can supply. But the likelihood that you'll ever need to work your machine hard enough for long enough to reach that point is very small.

  • Flex 2 14 Battery Level Dropped from 57 to 7 in seconds

I've been using my Flex 2 14 for around 3 months. However, recently I've encounter a situation whereby my battery level had dropped from 57% to 7% in split second when I'm not plugged in. I was wondering could it be an manufacturing defect and what should I do to fix this problem?
Note: I use this laptop while plugging into the charger most of the time. The battery level is usually kept at around 55~60 only with the help of energy manager. Also, I had performed battery gauge reset once.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    SOLUTION FOUND !
I just found a solution to my battery issue that is apparently due to a bug on the latest update of Snow leopard (10.6.8). Parallels desktop that was in the Dock was making the Dock taking 100% of the CPU activity (checked in the activity monitor) using battery and heating my computer.
After I checked for such cases on teh web (see: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1181176 ), I removed Parallels Desktop and Windows Applications folder from the Dock and situation seems to be back to normal...

  • Why does the magic mouse battery level drop suddenly?

I typically get, oh, about 3 weeks off of a pair of AA alkaline 1.5V batteries on my magic mouse.
What I don't understand though is not really being able to track the battery level in the bluetooth menu on my iMac 21.5".
The battery level even now is at 100%. What happens is is that it stays at 100% for several weeks and then all of a sudden drops to 7% or so, and I get a low battery warning. Then after a couple of days the battery will drain out.
After it drops down to 7% I can usually track the battery drain in the menu. But I never see it at 90% or 80% or 50%, etc. It just drops down suddenly near the end of the battery life.
Do other people see more continuous changes of the battery level?
The same thing happens with my bluetooth Apple keyboard that came with the iMac. Right now it is showing a level of 100%. It typically lasts for months instead of weeks, but I will never see an in-between battery level value until I get a low-battery warning.
I'm thinking of rechargeable batteries for my magic mouse. But I see too many negatives posted here in the forums about that, so I am hesitant about investing in those batteries and a charger if it's not going to work well.
    Thanks,
    doug

Maybe it's a Mac model issue? I'm running the late 2009 model, purchased in February 2010, and running Lion.
But I've never seen the battery level display in-between values.
Here's what it is showing now and I replaced the batteries over a week ago.
Do your batteries also last a few weeks in the magic mouse?
    Thanks,
    doug

  • 1950-Battery level drops suddenly to 5%

    Hi,
I have a Satellite 1950-902. I was wondering if someone could help with the following problem/unusual behaviour that began about a month ago:
I start using the laptop with the battery showing up as being full in Power Management. After about ten minutes of battery use, as soon as the battery level shows as being around 85%, the battery level indication suddenly drops sharply to 5%, and the system hibernates. When I recharge the battery, the charging process takes a very short time (about half an hour).
This behaviour is repeated every time I use the battery now.
    What is going wrong?
    Thanks.

    Hi Eleni,
It sounds as if some of the cells in your battery may have failed and consequently the battery can only hold a small portion of the normal charge. I would suggest a new battery is called for.
    regards,

  • Battery levels dropping rapidly!

I just recently got a 3gs. On 5.0.1 the battery was already pretty bad but now on 5.1 the battery levels are dropping even faster. So much for fixed battery issues! I'm not going to update to 5.1 on my other devices if this isn't fixed.

I'm having the same problem after iOS 5.1, but didn't have any trouble previously.

  • Battery Level dropping

Hi, I use my laptop at home, plugged in to the mains all the time. It is 6 months old. The battery charge level seems to be dropping every day - now it only reads 71%.
I have run the battery right down and recharged but it still never reaches 100 (or 99%) any more. The max is around 84%. What should I do?
    g4 12   Mac OS X (10.4)

I've noticed the same problem recently. I purchased my PowerBook new in April. I'm interested to see if this is a software issue.

  • Audio levels drop under a title

When I put a title over a bit of video, the audio track drops in volume tremendously until the title disappears. I can't adjust it to meet the audio level of the rest of the clip. What's going on? How can I keep the audio level stable when I put a title - such as the name of the person speaking - under the video?

That's weird, because a similar bug was fixed in iMovie 5, and I've not seen/heard it since:
iMovie 4's volume slider affects the volume of rendered clips, such as overlaying titles, by setting the rendered audio to the level selected with the volume slider.

  • Airport connection drops under load.

    Hello Community!
I have some serious Airport connection woes - whenever I heavily use the airport connection it seems to drop out every now and then. The intervals have no visible pattern, but the dropouts are directly linked to the amount of traffic going trough the Airport card.
The dropping is quickly and the Airport connection icon goes from the full 5 bars to greyed out and back. This happens at an increasing rate when it has happend for the first time after an restart.
    Here's a screencast I took to illustrate the problem: [www.verpeiltaber.net/airport.mov] (Quicktime, 1.30MB)
It also drops out (invisibly) when I Skype-Out, which is extremely annoying as I pay money for that and then the other side cannot hear me anymore after such a dropout. Strangely it never kills the entire call tough. It never happens when the computer is tethered to a LAN-Cable.
I have reinstalled Leopard from scratch just two weeks ago. I upgraded from Tiger before and had the problems with that version of the Leopard install aswell. Tiger didn't exhibit the problems - which leads me to believe that this is a software issue.
The Router is a D-Link 524 with the newest aviable firmware, and has been resetted multiple times. Other computers using the same WLAN work without any hitch.
This issue has popped up in my office WLAN, which uses a Lucent Router, aswell.
I'm pulling my hairs out here - help me please!
Edit: All the latest updates are installed, like the recent Time Machine & Airport update. No third party extensions or mods are installed. The issue is operating-system - wide.

I have been having the same problem since upgrading to 10.5.2 and it's driving me nuts! Momentary disconnections every 10-15 minutes making messenger, iChat, etc. completely useless.
I purchased a 15" macbook pro for my partner 2 weeks ago - it's having the exact same issues. I'm thinking of returning the machine as I've tried everything. I have no problems with any other machine connected to my router.

  • 100% to 65% Battery Level Decrease in Two Hours

My question is: "Is anyone else seeing rapid battery level drop with iPhone since upgrading to IOS 8?"
Since upgrading to IOS 8 on Wednesday the 17th, I have experienced RAPID battery level drop between charges.  I am now having to charge my iPhone 5s 32 GB half way through the morning, after lunch and when I get home.  If it weren't for my Mophie Jet Pack, a car charger and a charger at my desk, I wouldn't make it through the day.  Believe me, I have read every battery conservation tip out there. I have turned so many features/functions off that I'm really starting to wonder if IOS 8 is worth it for the iPhone 5S and below.  If I weren't faced with a daunting downgrade process, I would do it.  At least I used to be able to make it to 7 PM on IOS 7 before I put the phone on a charger or flipped on the Jet Pack.
Using the new Battery Usage report under Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage   I see that Calendar and Notes apps have taken the lion share of the battery charge over the past 24 hours, and there is a notation stating that the usage was "Low Signal" which I assume means that the phone was trying to do its thing with a poor cell phone signal.  At work, however, I am completely on wi-fi and not cell.  So this isn't very helpful.
On the other hand, I have an iPad Mini with Retina and an iPad 3rd Gen that have been upgraded.  Neither of them have had any problems.  In fact the iPad 3rd Gen still has 92% charge after sitting in my backpack all weekend long (since being charged Friday morning).  So what I am seeing only seems to affect my iPhone.
I do remember similar issues with the IOS 7 initial upgrade, which were resolved with subsequent patches/upgrades.

Thanks Lawrence.  We use CommonTime mSuite to integrate our Lotus Notes with iPhone's Calendar, Contacts and email using the Exchange iPhone connector, and I am one of the administrators for mSuite.  I have deleted and re-added the Exchange account on my 5s running IOS 8 multiple times, and have done the same on an iPad Gen 3 and an iPad Mini.  All with the same results.  (The results are that email comes down, but calendar and contacts do not, and email will reload every so often.)  I've deleted the account on the mNotes server a couple of times as well, to no avail.  I have an old iPhone 4 still running IOS 7.1.2, and setting the exchange account up on it, immediately everything came down successfully from Lotus Notes onto the old iPhone.  This is definitely an IOS 8/CommonTime issue, and CommonTime has acknowledged that there is a problem, though they have as yet no fix.  The one good thing to come of this is I now know what was killing my battery. After 7 hours of use last night (regular use on Facebook and Feedly) my battery had only gone down to 83%. Other of our 46 users who have upgraded to IOS 8 have the same problem as I.

  • Using iPhone while plugged in

Is it OK for the battery to use the phone while plugged in as I usually do with my lap top instead of constantly recharging while using the apps?

In the same way you can use TomTom in a car while it's charging through the holder, yes it's fine

  • N8 Battery Level Bars very inaccurate

    hi guys,
Is it just the unit that I got or are we looking here at much wider issue?
n8 has 7 bars reporting different battery levels. when I say "different" I mean really bizarre. I am not sure if you have noticed but in my n8, first bar on the top dissapears when battery level drops to 70%. in other words, top batery bar represents 30% of overall battery charge. now, the bottom battery bars represents just 10% of overall charge. so, 2 bottom bars equal to 20%, 1 bottom bar indicates 10% of overall charge. I am not sure if this is just me but I find this information very very misleading. why the battery indication cannot be configured in a way that represents as accurate level as possible? at the moment battery bars are not equal and one of them is a symbol of 30% and the other - opposite equals to just 10% of charge. This really looks like a fw issue. I am on 011.012
do you experience the same issue?
also, can the % battery level reported in the cloud when battery area is pressed be more granular? At the moment we are looking at 10% increments. any more accourate data would be much appreciated.
    thank you

Just wondering why Nokia never even bother to fix battery status icon, they rather create an app called Battery Monitor to bypass this. What dont they just delete battery icon and replace it with Battery Monitor in update if it is that useless?
Battery Monitor worked great in Anna, but after updating to Belle, Battery Monitor widget keeps freezing at random %. Now I have no way of knowing precisely how much life left in my N8. It just died without any warning.

  • Dv8315nr drops to battery while plugged in, especially under load

Have the dv8315nr and it keeps dropping to battery while plugged in, especially when the PC is under load, such as games or using CD drive.  The power block is ok, it has been tested with other power blocks and the issue still happens.  If you unplug the power at the pc and plug it back in, it will (most of the time) go back into a charging state.  I sent to hp while under the extended warranty and they sent it back with the diagnosis of "battery was bad, needed new battery".....and it worked ok until just out of warranty then started again.
I don't think it's the battery, since it happens with or without the battery in place (of course it dies completely when the power drops w/o battery in).
Has anyone experienced this and if so, have a method to fix it?  I suspect there is a hardware problem with the power supply in the laptop.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It sounds like the beginning stages of a bad power jack. That is the place where you insert the AC adapter into the laptop. The problem is very common and requires that a new jack be installed. Fortunately for you, the dv8000 has the power jack as a separate plug-in module...it does not require soldering just removal and replacement.
Here is an internet ad for a company that does the repair. I am not suggesting you hire them but they do post some nice pictures of the internal workings of the dv8000 series so you can understand what I am writing about. The repair job is only modestly hard; not nearly as bad as if soldering were needed. The part is readily available.
