Battery Life Decrease In Windows 7

I've recently installed Windows 7 Professional.  And I have to say the overall experience is great so far.  No issues installing it on my X200.  All the drivers work, and all my previous software does too.
However, I've run into something I didn't really expect.  The battery life on my notebook now has decreased quite a bit.  Usually on Maximum battery profile, my computer only drains out anywhere from 8 to 12 watts.  But now, it can hit up to easily 20W sometimes more on occasions while in maximum battery mode.  And, it usually stays around 13 to 18 when not doing anything.  This really isn't good.  That's about an hour worth of battery life for me gone.  It's not really a massively HUGE issue but keeping the wattage low as possible is always a big plus in the mobile world.
Any tips or maybe software updates that would fix this, would be greatly appreciated.
Another note: Intel Turbo Memory, only ReadyDrive really works if you have more then 2GB.  Having ReadyBoost on slowed down shutting down, and sleeping greatly.  Once I turned it off, it made things a lot faster.  ReadyDrive seems to be okay.  I don't really notice a difference but it isn't doing anything bad so I'll keep it on for now.

Hi,
9 hours was simply possible with lowest/nearly lowest display brightness setting, energy star power mode enabled, battery stretch activated and re-activated wireless adapter... without wireless adapter activated I could work for almost 10 hours
using the following T500 configuration: 9 cell battery, SSD hard drive, switched to integrated graphics, WSXGA+ resolution, no USB device plugged in, battery strech enabled (optical drive disabled, audio muted, display settings changed, but wireless LAN enabled)
That's the reason I'm still not really satisfied with Windows 7's power consumption...
Thanks,
Martin

  • After software/firmware UD, battery life decreased significantly+overheating problems

    Specs of my laptop:

Hi, a month or two ago I did a software/firmware update (the thing that automatically pops up once in a while and asks if you want to update). Before the update, I was getting 7-8 hours running safari on a bright level (more than half) which was awesome!
Anyways, after I did the update, my battery life decreased significantly. If my brightness was at half, I got around 2.5 hours MAX. If I ran word and safari it wouldn't even last two hours.
Along with the horrible decrease in battery life, my laptop now gets really hot, really quickly, even if I'm only running safari on a low brightness. Sometimes the fan vibrates becuase it's working so hard...it's NEVER done that before.
I took it into the Apple store 'genius' bar, since I still have the warranty and the person that helped me offered no resolution. He told me that my battery still has life and didn't know why my laptop did this, laughed...and then dismissed me (rude). haha
    system report of the battery:

I'm not sure what any of this means, but the 'genius' told me my battery still had a lot of life.
I just want the battery life back.
Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?
    Thank you

Hi, thanks for your advice. I just tried resetting and it worked momentarily (battery life improved, fan stopped making so much noise) UNTIL I put my computer to sleep and opened it again... when i first reset, battery life said 5:48. The fan was fine until I put it to sleep (closed the lid and opened five minutes later). Now it's heating up again and the fan is going crazy (making that buzzing noise), battery life is at 2:40 on same display brightness (half). I only have safari open....
Is there anything else I can try to do? Not sure why this happens after I put it to sleep. I don't want to have to reset my computer every single time I open it.
    thanks
EDIT: after posting this, not even five minutes later my battery time dropped to 2:07 and is funneling down as I type.

  • My battery life decreased dramatically after updating to ios 6.1.2.  How do I delete and go back to previous iso?

I have iphone 5; my battery life decreased dramatically after updating to ios 6.1.2.  How do I delete and go back to previous iso?

Downgrading the iOS isn't supported and wouldn't help even if you could.   There have been reports of decreased battery life after every update since iOS 1.0.1.
There are lots of things that can be done including reinstalling push email accounts. basic phone reset (pressing both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears), and restoring the phone with and without a backup.

  • HT1476 apple 5 phone, battery life decreased within one year of purchase, only half day or little more it works

Apple I phone 5 , battery life decreased within one year of purchase, it works for half day, charger is also giving some trouble as oly doing some hit and trial ,it starts charging,

I had similar issues with my iPhone 5. For the four or five most recent charging cycles it went from 100% down to around 30% normally with good standby and usage times. Then, start a call or open an app and bingo, it then would show 4% or 7%, sometimes giving me the 10% warning, other times not.
So yesterday I took it to Genius Bar; they tested it and  immediately said it was a bad battery...replaced for free since I'm a  month away from end of warranty.

  • Why is my mac's battery life decreased and got slower after upgrading to lion?

    Thank you for helping,
I am using MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and beginning of this summer I upgraded it from snow leopard to lion (from apple store). After installation my mac got slower,it consumes the battery very rapidly and starting time increased. I searched the reason on the net and this time I did a clean installation. I but the problem insisted. last week i updated to 10.7.5. this time i see that coloured spinning wheel even i logging in. I did all the updates and battery calibration as mentioned in apple support communities but nothing have changed. I don't use any grafic programs etc. I only use safari, firefox, iphoto, iwork and microsoft office for mac. My english and my computer knowledge is not very good. So, if you answer my problem please will you explain as much as simple.
    Thanks anyway.

    A couple of things...
...first, you might want to make certain that your internal drive is selected as the Startup Disk under System Preferences. If it's not, this can sometimes lead to a problem of your MBP 'searching' for a boot drive at startup. Second, you might want to read ds store's article - Why is my computer slow? A very handy reference guide with some good tips.
As to your decrease in battery life - that has been reported by some users as a problem with both Lion and Mountain Lion. See the "More Like This" to the right of this page.
Can't offer any real solutions - read Mr. store's article and see if you can find anything that helps. You might also want to download the free "Battery Health" from the App Store and keep an eye on your battery when you're using it.

  • New Mid-2013 macbook air BATTERY LIFE decreasing fast?

    Hi,
I just bought a new Macbook Air 13" 256GB , 4GB RAM. I'm worried about my battery life. With only 2 hours of just surfing the net and on 50% brightness, my battery life dropped to 60%. So every 30 minutes, it drops by 10%. I also found that my computer usage is 95% idle so how can my battery life waste so quickly??
my battery health is 100%. Is that even normal for a Macbook Air that is only 5 days old?
    Thank you!

  • Battery life decreasing

    Hi
I have a 1st gen phone and all of a sudden now I am only getting a day out of my battery... I would typically make 1 1-2mins call a day and send a few messages... I don't use it as an ipod... it hardly gets used but now all of a sudden my battery life is non existent..
    anyone else experiencing anything sim?
    scott.

    these links may help:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
additionally (might be mentioned on one of those links), you may occasionally want to "calibrate" the battery so it knows where full and empty are. basically charge it to full, then let it run down ALL the way (until it shuts itself off). then charge it again to full.
a reboot once in a while wouldnt hurt either (holding home and sleep/wake, ignore the "slide to turn off", release when you see apple logo), as the biggest culprit, as described in these discussions, of battery drainage is the mail app. it will sometimes get caught in a loop where it is constanly checking for mail, hence draining your battery.

  • Battery life decreases after update

After I updated iOS 7.1.1 for my iPhone 5S, every time when I charge my phone, the battery is not 100% full anymore. The first day after updating, the batter was just 98%, the second day was 95% and so on. I have to unplug the adapter and plug in again, then the battery goes from 95% (or 98%) to 100%. I don't know what's wrong with the phone, but in this case, I charge my phone overnight but the battery could not be 100%. Are there any software errors? Please help me!

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Backing up, Updating and Restoring
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

  • T500 users, what's your battery life?

    Here's my specs:
    T500 2.4ghz w/ 4gb ram, purchased october 09
    Battery: 9-cell
    Graphics: "energy saving" mode
Life:  only  2.5 hours battery life, three if I'm lucky.
Usage: just have about 10 tabs open on chrome, no flash or anything
What are you guys getting? Other reviews claimed people getting about six hours. I did the battery gauge reset earlier today, it calculated a max of a little less than three hours as well.
My friend's t400 2.2ghz (with 9-cell) seemed to last for six hours easily, possibly more than that.

I ended up stumbling upon this thread ( http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/Battery-Life-Decrease-In-Windows-7/td-p/168772/page... )and have the same symptoms of the fan constantly running among other things.
I'm updating power manager to see if it'll fix things, otherwise I'm getting tempted to cave and buy something else.

  • Massive battery life drop after Internet Recovery OS re-install

    Hey,
A couple months ago, I made the brilliant decision to try to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp at 3am on a weekend after several days of no sleep (unfortunately, this is one of the least-poor poor decisions I've made recently, but I suppose that's for another forum). Long story short, Og turn on MacBook, Og open Disk Utility, Og click-click, SSD go bye-bye—formatted, every last bit of it (haha, me make pun-pun!). Luckily, ML ships virtually tard-proofed, so there's little I can do besides showering with Bernie (this pun courtesy of the 'lil sis; I'm innocent) to make him breathe his last. This little bit of Apple genius is irrefutable proof of God—praised be his noodly appendage. But ever since Internet Recovery blessed me with Bernie II (R'amen), I've noticed during countless nights lying with him in bed that his stamina has decreased significantly, versus his pre-IR days. I can't give you firm numbers of his endurance before the operation, but now, after even the least vigourous play, he's drained beyond further exertion after no more than 2-2.5 hours. I've tried various tweaks to increase battery life—making sure his mail parts are only shooting off when I work them manually, the same for receiving messages as well, and I've been monitoring his GPU usage; thanks to ML he's much more conscientious about being discrete, and I rarely have to limit him to using his integrated components. (Note: I'm using writing this as an excuse to start an essay, and its foundation really needs to get laid ASAP, so unfortunately the allusions/euphemisms stop here.) Again, I can't give precise numbers about its original battery life, but I was blown away by it, likely averaging at or in excess of the advertised 7-hours. I'm a geek and spent my childhood with eyes never further than a couple of inches from my CRT (and have the vision to prove it), but I really have no f'ing clue what would be causing this. I never doubted that the battery life decreased (and dramatically so), but now that I've started booting up into Windows regularly, any trace of doubt has vanished. Using Windows 8 set on Maximum Performance (and, as I'm sure most of you are aware, Windows only uses the discrete GPU, even when doing nothing graphically-intensive), the battery life is still significantly better than using ML. I've searched and searched and searched and can't find a single reference to this issue online. I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Just in case it's of any assistance, I'll put some might-be-relevant-maybe info below, including things I've thought of that could be the source/contributing to the problem (again, I really have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to true geek know-how):
    - It's a rMBP 15" w/16GB RAM
    - When I formatted the HD, I wiped out everything. Yes, obviously there was enough on there for the laptop to launch into Internet Recovery, but I'm thinking that was all that was left. When I've been trying to think of why there's nobody online with this issue, something that's popped into my head is that anyone who knows what Disk Utility does is probably savvy enough (when not sleep-deprived) to not use it to format their HD, or at least to heed to the plenty of "Don't click yes, tardums" warnings that I'm sure popped up as I zoomed by them. And I can't think of many other ways for grandma-level Mac users to wipe their HD, so the lack of online info would make sense.
    - This was a couple months back, and I can't remember precisely the OS version when all this went down. I'm certain it was ML since I think my rMBP shipped with 10.8.0 (if not 10.8.1, if any did), but it could have been anything between 10.8.0 and 10.8.2. I'm pretty sure it wasn't 10.8.0 since I remember updating to 10.8.1 very soon after purchasing the laptop over the summer, but again, not certain.
Alright, that's it. I'm sure this post doesn't meet forum standards for plethora of reasons, but I'm a poor little private liberal arts university student who is desolate now that his $3,000 laptop isn't getting top-notch battery life, so mods, please dig deep in your hearts and don't delete. Thanks, yous da best.
    -Zack

There were a number of posts from folks with various models about a downgrade in battery life after an upgrade to Mountain Lion - so you aren't alone. However, since you're still under warranty, I would take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose the problem. Could be that your battery just isn't up to par (and I'm assuming that you've all updates installed?)...
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • W520 - Battery Life Under 2 Hours!

    Hello there!
I've been experiencing the problem where my Nvidia Graphics card does not automatically switch to the Intel Graphics card --- or if it does --- it does not allow me to have the 5 hours + of battery life that I use to have when I was using Windows 7 (right now I am using Windows 8).
I also don't have the Lenovo Power Manager program installed because I can't seem to find it anywhere on the installation pages for my particular laptop with Windows 8. I wonder if this is the problem since its using Windows Power Manager -- even though I have installed the Power Driver multiple times.
Even when I get it so I make sure that no applications are using the Nvidia Graphics card (confirmed by the Nvidia GPU Activity icon), I still get the under 2 hours battery life. I am using the 9v battery -- the larger one.
Any help would be greatly appriciated so I can get the full battery life out of this laptop, as when I had Windows 7 installed. Thank you :-)

    Hi brooklotzkar
    1. Go to Control Panel (Small icons)> Lenovo - Update and Drivers > Install all critical and recommended updates. Optional - Up to you to decide as you may not be using all the functions. If this options is not available, Download here and install.
    2. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Check Power saver. Power Plan make a big difference on both battery life and performance.
    From what I tested on my W520 - Core i7 2720QM
Maximum Battery Life or Power saver: CPU clock speed at 800MHz constantly, but performance decrease. You wouldn't want to multitask too much when on battery.
Maximum Performance or High Performance: CPU clock speed will go up from 3 - 3.2GHz (Depending on how many core / thread the program will utilize)
    3. Battery will vary depend on how many / what kind of apps are opened. I have tried using 5+h on 6-cell battery without any problem. (Battery Stretch, only running Microsoft Word and 1 tab of Internet Explorer) It is recommended to run Internet Explorer on battery as it requires less resource, hence battery life will not run out as fast.

  • Fix for iPhone Battery Life

Hi, I have done this with IOS 5 through 6 and it works.
I have done this serveral times with my phone, as battery life decreases.  I have not figured out what is the original cause of my battery problems, but every now and again, something starts to dain my battery at a rappid rate, in an hour or two.  This is the fix to reset it.
1 - Back up you phone to iTunes
2 - Go into the settings under General and at the bottom sellect Reset and reset your iPhone erassing all data.
3 - Once it resets and shows you the default "out of the box" screan, power it off
4 - Recharge it FULLY.... I leave it over night.
5 - Power it on again
6 - Restore your settings via iTunes.
    7 - Your done
In my experiance, if you skip any of the steps, like not powering off when your recharge or not recharging fully, will result in it still draining quickly.
    Hope this works for you.

    Thanks JJT2122 !
I added your fix to the list of available fixes that improve  iPhone battery life

  • Gaming effects on 13" MacBook Pro Retina 2014's battery life

My friend told me that his 13" macbook pro retina 2013 battery life decreased significantly after a couple week of intense gaming usage. Now it won't last long even only for browsing. He played Dota 2 and he said that the fan scream so loud whenever he play, and it becomes so hot. He didn't know his laptop temperature but it is quite hot.
Why is the battery performance getting worse? Is is because the heat?
Please give me a clear explanation. I just bought a new macbook pro and i am too afraid to use it for playing any games. I just don't want my battery to decrease that fast.

You can read more about battery life here:
    https://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/
    https://www.apple.com/batteries/
Heat and cold will have an impact on any laptop battery over time (that's the way it is.) However, as long as you take care of your computer, you should not worry about that.
How many times a day does your friend charge his mac? under theory, 1 charge should last you the whole day, (so, if you do play games and watch movies, you might need to plug it in 2 times.) If you keep your mac plugged in all the time , then that will also have an impact on the life of your battery. Apple support site has more info on that (you can browse the site)

  • Problem with battery life on 6.2.1

Since the update for IOS 6.2.1 about 4 days ago, I have noticed deteriorated battery life from the prior version.  As a workaround I have tried to reset my phone and reset all email information as recommended.  Updated settings to prevent push notifications, removed notifications and many other functions that were not causing me problems before, but to no avail.
Within 15 minutes of my phone being disconnected from the charger, the battery life decreases by 5-7% with the phone idle (Screen off).
Has anyone else encountered this and have you been able to correct the issue?
    Thank you!

Hi BK, I updated my iPhone, my iPad and my iPod Touch and my batteries are draining like water.  I am a school teacher and usually when I leave work at 4:30pm, my iPhone is at 74 to 76%  Today I had to charge my phone 4 times at work because it kept on draining.  My iPad is even worse, when I get home, my baterry is always at 97 to 98%. Today, I needed to use my iPad at work and from 100% at 9:00am it was completely dead at 2:30pm with no usage.  I was shocked!  I called Apple and they said that they are not aware of any problems with battery life and this update.  I went to Best Buy and the Geek Squad toldme that it is a very well known problem.  They are the ones that told me that the Apple boards was full of complaints regarding this issue.  So I called Apple again, and they continue to tell me that it must be my device.  Really?  All of my devices, my coworkers, my father's, my sister's are all having the same problem and they won't own up to it.  This update was supposed to improve battery life and instead, we got a nightmare.  Please fix this now!
