Battery life displayed as 0%

When the button on the battery is pressed it shows 3 green lights but the battery life is still displayed as 0% on my macbook.
This is my 3rd battery. The second was given to me while my macbook was under warranty. When this one decided to go out I used it until it ran out of juice. Then I pressed the power button hoping that it'd come back on just long enough to transfer a file (hey, it could happen). Instead the screen flashed white and that's the last I saw my macbook respond to this battery.
This happened some time early spring and I have been using it on AC power only since then. Classes are starting tomorrow so I would like to have it run off of battery again.

The battery has been sitting for several months but it shows that it is not empty.
(when I press the button on it, the lights turn on.)
The battery given to me after the first one died was "refurbished" and didn't last me too long until after the warranty ran out; about 3-4 months. This one I am currently using I bought off a third party web site. It only lasted about a month.
The computer itself was purchased 3 years ago last month.

  • Battery Life Display.

I remember there was a way to set the battery life display to hours and minutes instead of percentage.
I cannot figure out how to do it in Mavericks. What am I missing?

i believe now you have to click on the percentage and a drop down menu will tell you the time remaining instead of percentage.  Not sure of a permanent way to set it to this feature without having to click on the battery icon.

  • Does battery life % display in 1-unit increments?

I've recently been getting a low battery warning on my BT keyboard, and the drop-down menu shows "15%" remaining. Since the batteries are lithiums, I'd like to more or less run them out. At the same time, I do some gaming and a dead keyboard at the wrong time would be annoying. Is the percentage readout incremental by some unit? I recall there being a bar for this keyboard at one time that had only 5 "gauges," which meant the readout was only good every 20%, so I wonder if the keyboard just shows something similar. I know it won't be very precise, but I'd much rather replace the batteries at, say, 5% then 15%, especially since that 10% would mean several more weeks.

I believe my bluetooth magic mouse was reporting 19% battery life remaining last weekend. Since 19 is a prime, and I have seen values of 82, 57, 26, 8, and 6 I would guess that the value is a good approximation at that time. Keep in mind that is also probably based on a (mostly) linear discharge rate for alkaline batteries, and if you are using something else, the estimation might not be as accurate.

  • Battery life issue related to display/graphics?

    Hi
I bought a refurbished macbook pro last May. And the battery didn't even last 2 hours and half, which i found it weird since the macbook pro i had before(2007 model) had battery life of 3hours and half.
a month later i bought it, i started having issues with screen. the screen started flickering/flashing randomly. i got the display replaced last week i think, but the screen is still having issues and battery life got even worse! now it lasts 1hour 45 minutes(screen brightness set at 50%) and i'm only browsing the web...
(i asked the apple staff about it, and they said they ran a test and my battery is normal )
it just got me thinking, if the issue is not in the battery, there must be something else that's affecting it...and maybe somehow the screen issues i'm having are related to the battery life.
is it possible that something else is draining the battery power somehow..
I was just wondering what people think about this... this is frustrating and i don't kno what to do...

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • Mbp retina display battery life issues

When i bought my laptop, the battery life was around 7 hours. now its barely 3 or 4.
    I have tried to enter:
    cd ~/Library/Preferences/
    rm com.apple.desktop.plist
    killall Dock
this works sometimes, but other times it does not. Frankly, The issue of battery life should be one of apples first priorities. They promise us amazing battery life, and they dont even fix it in an update. If anyone has any advice, please help me. If an apple employee is reading this shame on you and please deal with the problem in OSX 10.8.4, or a minor update for retina display. I was told this is only a problem with mountain lion users.

    Hi Solid,
The article below will explain how to optimize the battery life on your Macbook Pro.
    Apple - Batteries - Notebooks
The article is more detailed, but this section is worth noting:
    Optimal Setting
You can choose to use your Apple notebook in a way that maximizes its battery life.
Energy: The Energy Saver control panel offers several settings that determine power levels for your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. Your portable knows when it’s plugged in, and runs accordingly. When on battery power, it will dim the screen and use other components sparingly. If you change this setting to maximize performance, your battery will drain more quickly.
Brightness: Dim the screen to the lowest comfortable level to achieve maximum battery life. For instance, when watching a DVD on an airplane, you may not need full brightness if all the lights are off.
AirPort Wireless: AirPort consumes power, even if you are not using its features to connect to a network. You can turn it off in its control panel to save power.
Bluetooth Wireless: Likewise, you can turn off Bluetooth to maximize your battery life, as it also consumes power when not in use.
Applications and peripherals: Disconnect peripherals and quit applications not in use. Eject CDs and DVDs if not currently accessing them.
You can also check to see the status of your battery with the information in this article:
Mac notebooks: Determining battery cycle count
I hope this information helps ....

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If it doesn't work, take your MacBook Air to an Apple Store or reseller, because your battery doesn't work

  • EFI Firmware Update for Retina Display and Battery Life

I recently installed the EFI firmware update (1.0) for the macbook pro with retina display and have found my battery life has reduced from what used to be 5 hours or so to maybe 2 hours. Furthermore, I have noticed that my computer runs significantly hotter than it used to. Has anyone experienced this and know why this is the case? I would like to restore my battery life.

I've noticed the same thing as well. Any word from Apple?

  • TS5296 Battery life is really bad on MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15'' late 2013.

Using only Safari, iTunes and a couple of other apps - Dont worry, i'm not using Chrome, as it's a serious battery killer! - on 50% brightness and im getting around 3-4 hours of battery life which is very disappointing.
Any of you with the same Mac model having this issue ?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply.
It is always there since it first appeared few a weeks ago.
But it becomes much more obvious when the fan gets speeding up or gets slowing down.
So I would say it is only gets worse when a CPU intensive application is running.
It is getting hotter. But it is resonable.
But the high pitch sound is really annoying.

  • Macbook pro w/ retina display battery life issues !

*** ! Battery life of my MacBook Pro is dropping ! it dropped 1-2 hours after upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion !

There are multiple sides to the answer to your question.
If the battery goes out while under warranty, Apple will fix it.
If the battery goes out after the warranty, Apple has already announced the price of the replacement. You can also check this page for more details about what is involved with servicing the batteries. For example, this page says if you can take the laptop to an Apple Retail Store you should expect a same day repair.
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/service/battery/
Now the last part of the answer. Remember that the battery cycle life of the built-in batteries is much higher than for removable batteries. That's a big reason they chose to build them in, freeing up space and weight for more battery by eliminating removable-bay hardware. This means, if on the old laptops you used to replace your battery because it would run down, there is a possibility the higher-capacity built-in battery might still hold a decent charge by the time you decide that you want a newer model anyway. Meaning you might not have to replace the battery.

  • How is your New iPad with Retina Display (4Gen) battery life?

I managed to get 6 hrs play out of my NEW ipad4 that connect to wifi and have brightness set 50%. (i said 6hrs because there is a 15% drop in battery each hour) is it good or not?How about yours?

There are some tips for maximising battery life between charges on this page : http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html  e.g. turn off notifications, decrease the frequency of checking/fetching emails, turn off wifi if not using it etc

  • Possible Internet Tethering/Battery Life Issue

When either Cellular Data is turned Off, or Airplane Mode is turned On, Internet Tethering (Settings>General>Network) appears to have some process that runs continually in the background (evident by continuously spinning wheel next to the option). The running process has a demonstratively negative impact on battery life (1/3 reduction in ~ 30 mins). The Apple Genius at my local Apple Store and I verified the issue on numerous iPhone 4s that were on display. Turning Cellular Data On and ensuring the phone is not in Airplane Mode stops the activity. But obviously that defeats the purpose of having those options.
So if you are experiencing poor battery life, this might be your issue.

  • Battery life and Heating up problems

After updating to mavericks , it seems that my macbook pro is always heated and the battery life got shorter even if I'm not using any app... anyone could help me ?

    Hello Jeskar,
    It sounds like you are seeing a decrease in battery life after upgrading to Mavericks. I would start by resetting the computers SMC, and evaluating the issue for a bit to see how that worked;
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You may also have to use the Activity monitor to see if you have any run away applications.
OS X Mavericks: About the Battery Status Menu
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5873
When one or more apps consume higher than average energy from the battery, the menu shows "Apps Using Significant Energy" with a corresponding list of those applications.
Some apps may use significant energy depending on what they are doing. This is normal. For example, if you are compressing video in iMovie, or playing a graphics-intensive game, the app may use a higher amount of energy than other apps. If you are trying to conserve battery power, quit apps listed in the significant energy section.
If you suspect that an app is appearing in the significant energy section because it is not functioning properly, try quitting and re-opening that app. If the symptom continues, open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder to troubleshoot further. The Energy tab of Activity Monitor displays the Energy Impact of each open app based on a number of factors including CPU usage, network traffic, disk activity and more. The higher the number, the more impact an app has on battery power.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling
