Battery life in the iPhone 5

I have a used iPhone 5 that I received from a family friend, and I noticed right away that the battery life was almost non-existent. Throughout my time with the phone I’ve realized that I virtually cannot use the phone while on 4G. If I try to use snap chat or any app while on data the phone will die no matter how charged it is, and it will take up to fifteen minutes to turn back on once on the charger. Is there anything I can do besides pay full price for a new phone?

Lithoum Ion & Lithium Polymer batteries has a normal life of 500-1000 charge cycles.  If the phone is "over heated" during charging or use, it will reduce that life span even more.  The way the batteries tend to work is that they show the max voltage available until the battery is nearly depleated and then it will suddently drop to 0% remaining.  This is why you see phones showing 20% (or 40% or 80%) one second then shut off the next.
As was already mentioned, Apple had a recall on some iPhone 5 batteries, so you might be covered under that (unless it has expired).  I believe that some Apple stores offer battery replacements for around $79 depending upon the phone and parts avaialbility.  You may find someone else to do it cheaper, but if they break your phone, will they replace it for you?  That is your call though.
One other option to consider is to get something like a Mophie Juice Pack Air.  It is an external battery built into a case.  When you use that, your iPHone thinks it's connected to external power while the Mophie is turned on and has power.  That might be enough to carry you through until you're ready to replace your phone too.  When my iPhone 5 was my primary device, I used a Mophie, and it would run empty in the evening, and I would still have about 60% battery on my iPhone itself when I would plug it in overnight.  BTW, I still have great battery life form my iPhone 5 using it without cellular service and it's about 3 years old now.

• What is the best way to improve battery life on the iphone 5?

I have the iphone 5 with iOS 6.01. I wanted to ask which is the best way (cleanest way to wipe the device), so I can attempt to improve battery life?

• Has anyone noticed a big drop in battery life from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4s?

In the 36 hours that I've had the iPhone 4s, the battery life is much worse than the iPhone 4. I'd like to hear if anyone else has experienced this as well.

iOS5 has removed the option to turn off just the 3G and have only 2G/Edge and WiFi. I used to do that routinely because I got much more reliable cell coverage in hilly San Francisco and it extended battery life between charges significantly. I only turned on 3G if I wanted to use the web while I was away from wifi or while on a call. The fact they removed this choice seems to have caught both Apple and AT&T staff by total surprise.
This is a problem in the UK as well as in the US and it isn't not carrier specific. It seems to be part of the iOS 5. I most certainly had it with my iPhone 4 and with iOS 4xx.
While the phone will revert to 2G if it thinks it needs to, that isn't good enough. I can't go a whole day (even half a day!) even on mostly standby. I've taken to turning off WiFi when I'm away from it because I can't turn off the 3G. I realize Siri won't work on 2G and maybe that is what has driven it-Apple's special, incredible new feature but if my phone has a dead battery it won't matter anyway.
Spread the news. Complain. We need to get this option back!

• Is this a normal battery life for the iphone 4s

i took my phone off the charger at 100% around 4:30pm. i messed around with it some.. id say around 7 or 8 o clock i was at 88% then. me and my friend facetimed for about an hour, after that i was about 9 o clock and i was down to 65 percent. at about ten o clock it was at 58. from ten o clock to about 1:20am i was texting my friend non-stop. by the time i fell asleep my phone was at around 15%. when i woke up this morning it was at 12%.
i have the brightness down pretty low, i have all notifications turned off and all that. im basically just using as regular phone. is this normal for an iphone? ive never had a smartphone before.

If you are on iOS 5 Or 5.0.1 there is a common problem in the battery life wait for 5.0.2 or whatever its gonna be called that will fix this issue/bug before upgrading to 5.0.1 it says fixes bugs affecting battery life but it doesn't actually make a difference

• I just bought my first iphone.  I am so disappointed in the battery life on the iphone5.  Have the phones always been this way?  Is there anything in the works to improve the battery life?

I just bought my first iphone.  I am so disappointed in the battery life of the iphone 5.  Is this the norm for iphones?  Are they working on a fix to this problem?  Almost wishing I had bought something else.

Without knowing what battery life you are seeing we can't determine if you have a problem. Have you compared your usage to the Technical Specifications?
Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G
Standby time: Up to 225 hours
Internet use: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 40 hours
Under normal use, unless there's a problem with your phone, battery life is comparable to any other smart phone and better than some. If you've never owned a smart phone before you will be disappointed with the battery life on all smart phones. You should expect to charge any of them daily. It's a mistake to think of it as a phone at all; it's a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can also make phone calls.

• Battery life. The elephant in the room or is it just me?

So the trade-off against integrating the antenna into the case (at such cost) was to make room for a bigger battery, so we could enjoy longer battery life between charges on our shiny new iPhone 4s. Really? My 3G was nearly two years old when I traded up to the iP4, yet its battery discharged at a far slower rate than the 4's battery from out of the box. Is mine just fitted with a battery that came off the production line on Friday afternoon, or am I expecting too much from the new model given its enhanced capability (as compared to the 3G and bearing in mind I skipped the 3GS), which must be expected to consume more power? Whatever, I am disappointed by the battery life of the iPhone 4, yet surprised to read no mention of any battery issues in these posts, especially as battery life was supposed to be one of its selling points. The reviews also seem to confirm an improvement in battery life that just doesn't square with my own experience. Anybody got a view?

I'm surprised my battery is doing well although I have replaced my iphone for the 2nd time. But here is the result from the first replacement:

comparing to what others have posted, similar stats but seems like mine only goes for 5 hours at tops or a bit over. So i took it to the genius bar, and this is why they replaced my iphone for the 2nd time.
Here is what I do with my iphone 4,
Basically I unplug it at exactly at 7 am, through out the day, I only check my phone every hour. Do some textings, check 2-3 apps every hour. of course i get phone calls in the morning and at night so during the day it's not a problem. From the time my phone is in sleep mode, and the time I wake it up, sometimes it stays, but sometimes I lose 1%, but then the moment I text or check few apps, I lose 2% more, which is fine i guess as the apps does eats small amount.
As seen on my stats, I can only get 5 hours of usage somehow. Even though the standby stats says 1 day 14 hours.
As for my 2nd replacement, even if it has similar stats (still on first charge so I have to drain it to calibrate the accuracty). I'll probably just keep this one, as long as the phone last the entire day is fine with me.

• I'll just live with the terrible battery life on my iPhone 5....

IMHO, each new iPhone has worse battery life than the one before.  I've come to expect this.  They claim the battery is better, but in real life use, this is simply not the case.  I've given up trying to figure it out, I'll bring it into the apple store tomorrow, maybe they'll even swap out the phone for me, but I doubt it will make a difference.  The battery is plain awful, but I'm never far away from a charger, whether it's in my car or office.  I've grown used to it at this point.  Nor am I going to do one of the 10,000 suggestions I keep seeing on here and other forums.  Restore as new?  No thanks, it's just the way I want it, I don't want to spend 6 hours loading everything again.  Turn off location services and apps?  What's the point of offering  a feature if you can't just leave it on and use it?  I have everything (well, almost everything) on.  Wifi, brightness all the way up, location services, it's all on.  Why?  I like using them.  That's why I bought the phone in the first place!
So, the bottom line is: I'll live with it.  I'll live with having to charge it a few times a day, I'll live with the fact that it'll never be perfect.  I will go to the genius bar just for the heck of it, there are issues with iCloud not backing up, and wifi not as strong as the 4S, and sometimes the usage and standby times are identical, so perhaps mine is defective, but I doubt it'll make much difference.  Sure, 6.1, or 6.0.1 will be released soon to address these issues, as I'm convinced this is mostly a software issue, but at this point I'm done trying to figure this out.

Hello there, EdisonGurraj.

Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
Cheers,
Pedro D.

• My battery life on my iphone 4 has been TERRIBLE since the most recent iOS update!

My battery life on my iphone 4 has been TERRIBLE since the most recent iOS update.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  At night I use a white noise app, and up to the most recent update, I never was below half battery in the morning.  Now my phone is completely dead in the morning.  I've noticed it draining faster in general since the update as well, but that particular app was just the best example.

One of the new features on the iPhone 4 is Multitasking ; it lets you do multiple things at once. For example, while iPhone is busy downloading a movie from iTunes, you can switch to the Safari app and browse IMDb in the meantime. So there's no more waiting around.
Each time you open an app and then press the home button, the app is still open. At the end, you may have too many apps opened at the same time.
To close apps, double click on the home button. Your opened apps will appear; hold one of them, then click on the red close to close an app.
Close as many as possible if you don't need them.

I was not aware of the fact one could use ringtones as alarms, this will suffice! Although I foresee some very awkward times as the sound does not stop once I respond to the reminder (it keeps going for good five - ten seconds after I "stop" the reminder), but it's better than missing it altogether!
Thank you very much!
Regarding the Alarmed app, doesn't it have to be running to actually remind you?
-Modular747: I don't know anyone who actually reads the terms of service agreement, those things are usually up to thirty, small print pages full of legal jargon. Rules, I do read - not the legal documents (also they often contradict the laws in my country, but that's a whole different story).
I agree with you - the average customer support consultant mostly cares about keeping his job and earning his salary (don't we all?) and thus racking up completted tasks (i.e. getting rid of customers as fast as possible - in a good mood). The "threat" none the less is real, if a cell phone causes me more trouble than it is worth, I will indeed throw it away (I have done so before) - and recommend a different brand to anyone willing to listen.
Don't get me wrong, I love Apple and I've been faithfully using and recommending their producs for twenty years now, not because of fanboyism, but because they earned it. This calendar issue, however, is like a toaster that doesn't automatically eject the toast at the set time. I see it as a major flaw and after googling around a bit I see that it's been around since at least 2007 (THAT'S SEVEN YEARS!!) so I strongly believe they are aware of this problem by now, but are choosing to ignore it for some mysterious reason and it really ****** me off.
I will send the feedback but based on my observations I suspect the Send button is merely a cleverly disguised Delete button.

Take a look at this to make sure your settings are optimized to the best it can be.
If all else fails, try and restore through iTunes, set up as a new iPhone and manually sync your apps and media back to your iPhone.
If still persists after this, you might call Applecare and see if they can run a battery diagnogstics..

• Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? How can this problem be solved?

Dear all,
I am new to this community even though I have been a Apple user for years, so please forgive me if this question is not in the right section.
Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? I've always been happy with these two products until the update - now the battery life is considerably shorter which is extremely frustrating.
How can this problem be solved? Is there any way to go back to the previous version?
Thanks for your help.

If you update using iTunes the phone is first wiped clean, then the new OS is installed, and finally the backup is restored. After this finishes if you sync your music should be restored. Music is not in the backup, because it is already on your computer and duplicating it would use up a lot of hard disk space.
An OTA update just patches what has changed; it does not disturb content.

• What is the battery average of the iPhone 4S running with the 5.1 IOS ?

So... what is the battery average of the iPhone 4S running with the 5.1 IOS ?

I don't spend time worrying about my "average" battery life. To figure that out, I'd need to keep track of exactly how long it took my battery to run down. I'd need to run the battery down every time. I'd need to do this for weeks to get any valid data. I have a life. I charge my phone at night and take it off in the morning. If I need or get the chance to charge it some other time, I do.
