Battery Life on a 60GB 5th Gen Ipod!!

Does anyone know what the battery life is supposed to be (what does Apple claim) on the 5th Gen 60 GB Ipod?? My video's are only playing for approx 2 hours, is that right?? Apple claims up to 20 hours for music and I am getting 6. I have followed ALL the battery life saving tips they give. What's the deal.

Yes I played JUST music. Do you know what Apple Claims the battery life should be for both music and then for video's? My 60GB photo lasted closer to 10 hours playing music....bummer.
It is frustrating to read all the poor batt performance claims, so I would like to make sure that everyone understands... Apple does their tests under ideal conditions, as any person would expect. But there is no benefit to them in overstating the results since this would certainly raise the ire or their users.
Ideal conditions in general are:
Batt tests are done with 128 kbps AAC music only, file size of 4 MB per song, backlight off, Repeat-Off, EQ-Off, Soundcheck-Off, continuous (one long playlist) on a conditioned battery (several normal batt recharge cycles completed), nominal temperature.
Now, I have a 5g-60 and have been seeing roughly what I expected, between 16-17+ hours depending upon settings and how much fiddling I do with the controls during play.
Here is an excerpt from iLounge.com's report:
Apple claims that the new 30GB iPod will play music for 14 hours, photo and music slideshows for 3 hours, and iPod on-screen video for 2 hours. In our tests, it outperformed Apple's claims in two out of three categories, but missed one as well. It played music for 15 hours and 30 minutes, photo slideshows for 2 hours and 32 minutes, on-iPod video for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and iPod-to-TV video for 3 hours and 10 minutes. Apple similarly claims that the new 60GB iPod will play music for 20 hours, photo and music slideshows for 4 hours, and video for 3 hours. In our tests, it missed the music claim by 10 minutes, playing for 19 hours, 50 minutes, but exceeded Apple's photo and video claims, playing a music photo slideshow for 4 hours, 47 minutes, iPod-screen video for 3 hours, 23 minutes, and on-TV video for a hefty 5 hours and 24 minutes.
To provide a frame of reference, color 4G iPods were able to achieve music playback times of around 17 hours a piece, beating Apple's estimates by 2 hours. By comparison, the black-and-white 4G iPod that was introduced last July ran for 12-14 hours, and 3G iPods ran for much less. Therefore, regardless of whether they meet or miss Apple's estimates, the new iPods are at least acceptable overall. The 30GB 5G iPod is a bit under the color 4G in battery performance, while the 60GB 5G iPod is superior. The only iPod that's ever done better than the 60GB 5G was the second-generation iPod mini, which actually ran for over 26 hours in our testing.
The two biggest contributors to sapping the battery's energy are use of the backlight and hard drive. Whenever you use the volume control, menu system or select your favorite song as the next one, you are draining the battery at an exponential rate.

  • Where is f/w 1.2 (60GB 5th Gen iPod video)

I have read messages on here saying the latest firmware is v1.2 and is included with iTunes 7 download, but this wasn't the case for me. My iTunes 7.0.1 download did not contain the v1.2 f/w update. Has it been pulled? It doesn't seem to be separately downloadable.
    Nigel

OK, sorry being stupid. Sorted now. iPod Updater now fully integarted with iTunes triggered update from within (I'm used to it being a separate program to do the update). Now running v1.2 f/w and gapless playback testing as I write. Not perfect but a lot better than before.

  • Podcasts listened to on classic (5th gen) iPod don't sync to iPhone

I have the feeling this has been covered before, but I get lost in threads of various ages talking about various versions of iOS, various versions of the Podcasts App, etc.
I have an iPhone 5C with the most current version of iOS (7.1.1) and the Podcasts (2.1.2) app.  My 17" MBP has the most recent version of Mavericks (10.9.3) and iTunes. (11.2.2).  I also have a 60GB, 5th gen iPod.
Before I got my iPhone, I would plug my classic iPod into the Mac to sync.  Worked flawlessly.  I would download new podcasts episodes into iTunes, plugging in to sync would update the played count on both the computer and iPod depending on where I played them, and mark the played episodes to delete, and push new episodes to the iPod.
When I set up my iPhone, there was some oddness originally with random old episodes showing up on the iPhone, which then propogated back to the mac.  I marked those as played, which got rid of them, and haven't had that problem again.  I have my iPhone set up with the Sync tab on, refresh at every 6 hours, limit episodes off, delete played episodes on, cell data off.  I have the download episdoes off for now, so the phone itself only updates episodes when I sync to the computer.  I recently changed that.  I'm not sure if it will effect anything.  I generally sync the iPhone over the wifi, although I do plug it into the laptop to charge at night - I'm not sure if this intiates a sync or not with the laptop lid closed.
The podcast app seems to work perfectly if I use the iPhone as my listening device.  I listen to something there, and it shows up as listened to on the Mac, changes propogate there well.  Later, if I plug in the iPod, it reflects those changes.
The only problem I seem to be having so far is listening to podcasts on the iPod.  If I listen there, when I plug it in to sync with the Mac, those changes show on the mac.  Later, if I sync the iPhone, however, changes that originated on iPod do not sync to the iPhone, even if the Mac is reflecting those changes, do not sync to the iPod.  So I play one of three new episodes of a podcast on my iPod, sync it, my Mac now shows only two new episodes of that podcast, my iPhone still shows three unplayed episodes, even after a sync.
    Is there anything I'm missing?

Well i have a solution that does not get messy.
    very simple:
    1. Make Sure your all your iPod songs are backed up.
    2. Restore iPod to factory settings
    3. re-sync iPod media
    4. enjoy.
    Hope this helped

  • How is the 5th Gen iPod better then....

How is the 5th Gen iPod better then the 4th Gen iPod, other then the obvious video ability? Is it really that much better while playing songs? Is it built well? How do you like it?

I do not own a 4G iPod but I can ad that I don't think there is anything better about the audio quality in the 5G
iPod as compared to the 1G iPod. What you get are new features and of course capacity and cosmetic appearance. I am an owner of a 1G iPod that is still going strong, no issues with it ever! I recently purchased the 5G and already have questions regarding shut down and pausing and battery life!

  • 5th gen iPod Touch crashes spontaneously

    Hi there
My 5th Gen iPod Touch crashes at random times, usually when on wifi.  When it does this, it resets my clock by ten or twenty or thirty minutes and I have to fix the time because it does not automatically restore via the Internet.  I tried restoring my iPod, both at home and at the Apple Store, but when the person helping me ran a diagnostic on it I was told nothing came up.  My diagnostic data was still on the iPod and I had three kernel panic reports and about eight reset counter reports, so I'm not sure why I was told that.  I've seen a similar thread on here saying it was probably the battery, so I thought that was the problem, but I've just been told otherwise.  I don't know what to do because last night I plugged in my iPod and left the room, then came back to find the screen cracked (I'm guessing having to do with the battery).  No one else was in the room and I didn't drop it.  Because I don't know how to reproduce the problem, I'm having a hard time proving it exists regardless of diagnostic data, and now it looks like I dropped it and that damaged the device, when that is honestly not the case.  Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you.

    Hello
No, I did not restore from backup.  I restored to factory settings at the Apple Store and when I got home and tried to set up my email, my iPod restarted again.  The time reset to ten minutes previous.
I'm mentioning the crash reports because they all correspond to the times my iPod restarted.  It has crashed four times in the last hour and all I've done is download two apps (Podcasts and Skype) and added my email accounts.
    Thanks very much.

  • Why won't my 5th Gen Ipod touch switch on?

I have had my 5th Gen Ipod touch for 1 week. This morning it wouldn't switch on, the screen just stays black. Neither itunes or my computer recognise it but if I plug it into a mains charger the apple logo flashes slowly. I have tried everything suggested in the forums. Is there anything else I can do? Or is it a trip to the apple store?

    Try:
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 5th Gen iPod repair question

i have a 5th gen ipod that does not respond. ive tried everything, nothing seems to work, it wont even show up on my computer. im thinking there is something wrong with either the battery or main board. ive only had it for about 2 months so it should still be under warrenty and i dont see why apple wouldnt replace it for me but the real question is my front pannel around the screen is messed up kinda bad.. you can still see with the backlight on but still its messed up. Will they not replace my ipod because of this? im mailing it in, and i just dont want to be charged without knowing our penalized in any way.

okay but the front is cosmetic damage, which the sun messed it up (i guess i will have to take the blame for that one) so will they not give me a new ipod because of the cosmetic damage?

  • Downloading 15,000 Photos to 5th gen iPod

Want to upgrade to new 5th gen iPod 60GB but would like answers to the following.
    1. Apple say, “If you have a Windows PC and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later, you can download photo collections automatically.“
Will the above work on a Mac using Adobe Photoshop 7?.
    2. Apple say, “When you download photos to iPod, iTunes optimises the photos for viewing. Full-resolution image files aren’t transferred by default”.
By what % does iTunes reduce each image file by?.
    3. I have 15,000 Jpeg images stored on an iMac but not in iPhoto. The folder structure is extensive and named in a manner that I understand. If I want to download all 15,000 Jpeg images via iTunes will the folder structure-names and each file code number be kept the same. In other words I want to duplicate the whole archive; folders, files and names and access the same family tree of folders and files as if on an iMac, is this possible?.
    4. What is the useable GB hard drive space on a 5th gen 60GB iPod?.
    Thanks.

    1) You can actually downlaod photos directly from iphoto library .....you can set up folders within iphoto and the pholders will appear on the ipod. But i am unaware of elements transfer on a mac (never done it b4).
    4) the useable gb on a ipod hard drive is slightly less that the advertised 30gb or 60gb it in reality done mathematically is slightly less. So it is likely 1 or 2 gb lower than the advertised gb storage.Other factors that key intyo the avialble disk storage is apporx how many songs and other files that are stored on your ipod not including the photos you want to place on there.

  • 5th Gen iPod Classic won't play video

I've been having a problem getting my 5th gen. iPod to play video podcasts. I'm using iTunes 9.2.1 and os 10.6.4. For about a month or so now my iPod will play a couple videos and then it just stops playing them. It usually finishes playing but then goes to black screen before the next video starts. If I click the pause button the battery indicator shows up at the top and three podcast titles quickly display and then disappear, and then the screen returns to the menu. From that point it won't play any video podcasts; until I resync the iPod then it will play three of four video and quit again until it's resync'd. Even after it stops playing videos it will still play audio podcasts without interruption.
I've tried restoring my iPod, but I get the same behavior after the restore.

I have an 80 classic and i started getting new movies and tv shows and my ipod stoped playing movie files. The time i experienced this was May 22, 2009. I loaded the free episode of the Glee Club offered by itunes. Did you ever find out how to fix that. Someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • 5th gen ipod classic

How can i replace the battery for a 5th gen ipod classic? The support centre says it is now "vintage" and can't replace it?

There are still several third party services out there that offer a battery replacement service for the 5G iPod Video.  A Google search for "iPod 5G Battery replacement" should give you a number of results to work with.
Otherwise, you can choose to swap out the battery for a new one yourself using of the many guides found online.  I usually go with the ones over at http://www.ifixit.com.
As for where to find purchase a replacement battery, there are several online retailers and resellers to offer them as well.  Some of the places that offer the replacement service also offer the parts, so you can check there as well.  Just make it the battery is specifically advertised as being for the 5G iPod Video.

  • Strange problem with 5th Gen iPod

I have one of the late 2006 5th Gen iPods which I got for Christmas, it originally had a defect with it's dock connector port and data transfer didn't work, I had to get it replaced. Now this one seems to be having loads of problems like just freezing while playing songs and skipping. But the reason I'm typing this message is becuase now after charging my iPod using an adaptor, I go onto iTunes on windows XP, then when I plug it in, It doesn't appear anywhere, says no power remains and then switches off and doesn't turn on no matter what I try, reset, center button, play.... I'm starting to think that iPods are very poorly built pieces of electronics sold at a very high price. Someone please correct me.
Edit: when I plugged it in, it didn't do anything at first, just normal screen showing full battery. Then I plugged it out and back in and then I got the no power warning.

No they are not. All of mine have worked fine and so have all the Windows users I know. Is that enough correction?
As far as your problem with the iPod, let it run down for at least 24 hours before proceeding.
    Before starting, read this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
Even if no new drivers are available for your computer, delete and reload your USB driver.
Next charge your iPod (use the wall charger) for at least 30 minutes then connect it to your computer. Use a rear port on your computer and disconnect all other USB devices except for your keyboard and mouse.
Now reformat your iPod (FAT32, don't use a quick format) and then Restore it in iTunes.
I am assuming your are using iTunes 7.1.1.5 and Quicktime 7.1.6

  • 5th Gen iPod, seen by Windoze, not by iTunes

I've been too busy lately to hang out keep up with the iTunes 7 issues, but I still have to stop the iPod service, attach my iPod, start iTunes/start the service every time I want to sync. Is there any hope that this is a temporary condition or is this just how it's gonna be from now on? iTunes 7, 5th Gen iPod w/1.2 software, XP Pro SP2.
    TIA for your comments/help.

Wow, 10 days and not a single reply. Guess I'm not the only one too dumb to figure out what's wrong with iTunes.
