Battery Life on brand new macbook pro 15 inch i5 only lasting 3 hours

The battery on my macbook pro is only lasting 3 hours with light use...If i'm watching a video or on a game it lasts maybe an hour or 2. I charged it fully when I first got it out of the box 2 days ago.
I have tried calibrating it which worked a little bit. But still nothing like the promised 8 hours. Not even near 6 hours.
Can anybody help?

I tell you how to maximise it mate .. Fully charge your battery and leave it on charge for 2 hours .and then create the minimum power consumption scenario ( kill bluetooth , minimise brightness , kill all apps etc ) AND THEN remove the plug .. use at this state until about 70% charge and continuously monitor the capacity like I mentioned earlier when you see it hit a high, plug it in you will see now that will become your permanent capacity .. allow full charge and leave it plugged for a day . .repeat the same .. after about a week now this time do the same but reduce down to the 40% range and always plug in at a high capacity point..you will train you r battery this way ..
I am glad I could help .. altho it took a bit of fighting the external obstructions it's all good
take care ,,

  • HT1338 How can I conserve battery life on my new macbook pro? I got it 2 weeks ago and am noticing that the battery depletes quickly. I dim the screen and keyboard backlight & mainly use Safari (multiple tabs).

    Appreciate any help!

My daughter also just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" with the same issue. When we migrated over from the old computer, we brought over only her documents, no applications, and she was getting only about a 2 hour battery life on the new MBP.  Somewhere in the MBP threads in this forum someone who was experiencing this same battery life problem said he was told by an Apple Genius in a retail store to try setting up a second user, and then to try working out of that user only. So we set up the second user, logged out of the old user,  and the battery life readout is now about six hours after a charge when my daughter is logged in as the new user. If she needs old documents or other files she can always log in as the old user to use them, but she rarely has to go back. Whenever  she is logged on as the old user the battery life shows under two hours, but when she she logs out and logs back in as the new user it jumps back up to around six hours.
There seems to be no need to eliminate the files etc. that reside under the old user. As long as my daughter is logged out as the old user and logged in as the new user, the battery life is much better. Weird solution, but it seems to be working. She is running Lion 10.7.4.
         Hope this helps.

  • Brand new macbook pro 2012 (no retina display) 95% battery health with 5 cycles? is that okay?

I know, another battery related question. I have recently bought a brand new macbook pro (no retina display), I calibrated the battery at least twice since Ive had it and it states that I am at 95% battery health with only 5 charges. Is that normal or should I bring my macbook in to be checked? Id like to get this settled before school starts in September since I depend on my macbook a great deal.
    thanks !

    Full cycle? 100%, of course.
How you get there is another matter. It can be a battery killing full discharge that will certainly ensure a brief life. Or a leisure set of discharges down to 20%, 30% or more. When they all sum up 100%, winner! You've got a cycle!!
Apple recommends you enjoy your Mac and don't obsess too much on battery stuff. Just exercise the electrons every so often by bringing it down to, say, 20% and charge it back up. Going all the way down to the bitter end, when the Mac forces itself to sleep is sort of ok too and won't do (too much) damage, provided you don't make it an engrained habit. We all forget the power brick occasionally and get caught out in the wild with whatever charge was left inside.

  • I bought a brand new MacBook Pro Mid 2014, and my battery cycle count is on 2!!

As I said on the question, a brand new MacBook Pro I bought recently which I haven't even put on charge yet already has a cycle count of 2!
I'm just curious if this is normal and I want to make sure that I received a brand "new" one not a refurbished one.
Did anyone else order a new laptop and have cycle charge of 2 or more and is this normal or not?

The factory charges the battery, one cycle, they may then test that particular MacBook Pro as part of the production testing and it ends up with another cycle.  Two cycles is not something to worry about.  If you bought the unit from an Apple store or directly from Apple, it will not be a refurbished MBPr unless they specifically said it was.  They don't do things like that.

  • My brand new MacBook Pro retina display not charging the battery any more after 3 weeks...no green or red Led. Any one now about this problem? Thanks

My brand new MacBook Pro retina display not charging the battery any more after 3 weeks...no green or red Led. Any one now about this problem? Thanks

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.

  • Brand new Macbook pro 15inch (not Retina) wont boot my MBP 13 inch (2011) HD

Just bought a brand new macbook pro 15 inch, replaced the hdd with my 13 inch hdd and it wont boot. i got a Error msg. (Lion)
    - I put the new hdd in the old MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
    - I put back the old hdd in the MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
I figured the hdd wasnt compatable with the 15inch so then i cloned the 13inch hdd onto the 15inch hoping it would work. i still got the error msg.
so now im stuck because the 15inch wont boot from the stock hdd because it has the data from the 13inch. Very frustrating, what could be the logical reason to why it wont boot?

That's correct. The version of Lion you have on your old disk will not boot on the new machine.
What you should have done is make a Time Machine backup of your old drive. You still may be able to buy an enclosure for it and see if you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your apps and data, but I'm not sure that will work (works when an old drive is in another Mac and you transfer via, for instance, Firewire).
So you'll just have to resinatll the correct version of Mountain Lion and then you can TRY to use Migration Asistant to get your data/apps from your old hard drive once it's in an enclosure (again, I'm not sure that it will actually WORK, I've never tried it).

Why does my brand new MacBook pro have 13 cycles on the battery right out of the box? Shouldn't it have 0 because it's brand new.

Yes it should have 0.  I would return it, that means that the battery has already went through 13 full cycles.  Perhaps they accidentally resold a returned one as new.

  • Strange wifi problem on a brand-new MacBook Pro

Hey there, I'm new here. Desperation has got the better of me, and I hope I can get some advice.
So, last sunday I bought a brand new 13" MacBookPro with 2.8g i7 processor and 10.7.2 OS (I can't update to 10.7.4 because System Update tells me the download has been tampered with or corrupted after I waited 2 hours for it to finish, but I'm trying a direct download from the website). Here's the exact product: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MD314LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B005CWIZ4O/ref= sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340301247&sr=8-5&keywords=macbook+pro+13
Everything is all perfect except for a strange wifi problem. Note that the wifi does not turn-on or off, it doesn't disconnect after 'sleep', it doesn't get less speed, it doesn't constantly leave a preferred connection (once I chose my home wifi it always connects to it no problem). The wifi bar is always full. What is wrong is that the internet is kinda 'glitchy'. The best metaphor I can think of is that it's like a car that has to be pushed down the road before the engine can start. Please, bear with me because this is kinda hard to explain and I'm not good at tech lingos.
One of the symptoms is browsing can get really slow and inconsistent, almost as if the wifi gets turned off in the middle of browsing. For example: if I look something up on Google and then open 5 new tabs, probably only 2 or 3 of those tabs will eventually load while the other two will not get past the long 'http:.......google.....etc etc' address and will eventually show one of those 'error loading page because there's no Internet connection' notice. This happens a lot. Sometimes I have to refresh/retry loading a page a couple of times before it finally loads, then usually everything will get back to normal and I will be able to open multiple tabs with no problem, but in a couple of minutes I would try to open another site and the problem will start again.
So I tried to see how it does with downloading using iGetter. Fortunately I also have a Macbook (white-plastic casing one) and my brother has an old 2006 MacbookPro so I can compare. With those two older Apples iGetter starts receiving data in less than 8 seconds after I click Start, while my brand-new Macbook Pro can take up to 15-20 seconds, sometimes it doesn't even start at all and I have to re-click the start button. But once the download actually starts (on my new MacBook Pro), it downloads like normal, it doesn't stop and the speed is also as good as I can get. Strange huh? Hence, like a car that has to be pushed before the engine starts.
I also tried 'speed testing' from a website with all 3 laptops. On my old MacBook and my brother's MacBook pro, once I click 'begin test' it takes only a couple of seconds of 'ping' before the download/upload speed measurements start, but with my new MacBook Pro (just like with iGetter) it takes up to almost a minute before the measurements start, sometimes it won't start at all and I have to re-start the test.
Well, thanks for reading. And hope you can help me shed some light into this. Because it is really preventing me from really enjoying my new MacBook Pro. And if this is most likely a hardware problem, I'd better get back to the store and try to get it replace or something while it's only been 5 days. *cheers*

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I bought the MacBook in Indonesia where there are no such thing as an AppleCare. The only option is to leave the Apple product to one of the 'Authorized Apple care centre' and have whoever do whatever to it without guarantee of success. As for returning it and getting a brand new one, I also don't know if there is such a deal here, but that's actually a good idea, will try to go to the store tomorrow. Although, I'm worried that the problem might be with OSX Lion or something and getting a new one won't help.
mark75090, I've tried resetting the router when I first noticed te problem, didn't work though. I've checked my new MacBook's wi-fi (option+click wifi bar) and it says 'PHY Mode: 802.11g', so does my MacBook and the old MacBook Pro. I don't know what those mean though, and I don't know whether or not my router is an N., can you tell me more please.. I have tried with the other two turned off, and only the new MacBook using the wi-fi but the problem persists. I have also tried connecting directly to the router, but as I described, the problem is too subtle for me to notice the difference.
Also, if I create a brand new Wi-Fi connection in network preferences and connect to my router through the new Wi-Fi profile, the problem seems to be gone for an hour or so, then it always comes back though. I have also just finally installed 10.7.4, but it doesn't help either.

  • My brand new MacBook Pro won't turn on. What's the deal with this?

I got the thing yesterday. Sat down with it last night and everything started up fine. I set up my account and then it was time for updates. Naturally, I said yes to the updates. They downloaded, they installed, and that was the last time my brand new MacBook Pro turned on. I've checked to see that the battery is fully charged. I've tried plugging into other outlets. I've tried removing the battery and the power cord and pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Nothing has worked. When I put my ear up to it while pressing the power button, I can hear it try to start and get about 2-3 seconds in to start up and then a click and nothing. Does anybody have any idea what the heck has happened here?

  • Leopard Install on Brand New MacBook Pro?

Hey guy's, I got my first Mac today. A lovely brand new Macbook Pro. I got a copy of Leopard in the box and have run an upgrade.
Was this right? As the computer is new with nothing on it and I have nothing to import of another Mac onto it should I just do a complete erase and install?
    What's the best option?

wow thanks for the very fast reply! I'll stick with it then and see how it goes. I love the thing though. It's very sexy!! Bit peed that they bumped the 7200rpm drive up to 200GB today but never mind, not fussed by the CPU as it'll only use the battery more and this thing is fast enough!
Will the upgrade convert all the OS into the full 64bit?

  • Finder stuck on Music folder on brand new MacBook Pro Retina

I've recently switched from Windows to Mac. The brand new MacBook Pro has been having issues ever since I got it, crashed during its first install/set up, etc. But until now, I could always figure things out. Now I accidentally clicked on my music folder (bad idea, I know), but finder is now crashed and I don't seem to be able to find a solution anymore.
I have tried relaunching the app, but since the music folder crashes, that is of no help. I have tried killall Finder through the terminal, but that crashed (presumably - I just quit terminal after 30min of nothing happening but the progress wheel spinning away), I tried rebooting without relaunching apps (several times), but it either crashes on trying to shut down (hard shut down after 30min) or restarts with the two darn finder windows open. I am at my wits' end.

Yes, that's why I just wanted to make sure it's normal...
Aside from that, nothing else seems wrong with the laptop and it seems like a hassle to go through if it's normal to have some battery cycles on a new Macbook.
Has anyone heard of resellers such as MacMall resealing returned laptops and selling them as new?  Has anyone else noticed a high cycle count on their brand new Macbook?

I have a white vertical line down the right side of my internal brand new macbook pro 13" display. I've done the following:
-Shutdown the computer, and restarted in Safe Mode by pressing the Shift key after the restart tone
-Shutdown the computer, and restarted by pressing Command, Option, P & R after the restart tone
-Checked display resolution, Best for Retina
-Hooked it up to a Dell external monitor and via projection to screen. There are no lines on the external or secondary screens
-Just curious, I ran a color utility which can not repair 4 items, maybe this is another issue.
This is a brand new Macbook Pro, just out of the box. It was fine for two days without any issues, fine last night while in use, opened it up this morning with the line.
Anyone now how I can fix this on my own?

If you are within the first 14 days from the date of purchase, return the MBP for a refund or an exchange.  If you are after the first 14 days of the date of purchase, have the MBP repaired under the warranty provisions.
    Ciao.

  • How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro?

How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?
This message appears: You can't open the aplication LogicPro.mpkg because power pc aplications are no longer compatible.
    Thanks folks

You should be able to copy all the files from your old computer, although it might not work if the old machine didn't have an intel processor. When I got a new Mac a few months ago, I used the migration assistant to copy everything from my old computer's time machine backup disk. All my old pro apps, such as Final Cut Pro 6, work fine on the new machine under Lion.
Later, I wanted to install Soundtrack pro and couldn't do it from the original disks. So I installed it on my old machine and copied the files. It worked perfectly.

  • I have a brand new MacBook Pro . I am trying to connect to the private wifi at my house but I need the IP address of my laptop . Everywhere I go on the laptop, the IP address is blank . How do I find the IP address if laptop is not connected to the wifi

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and I'm trying to connect to the private wifi at my house however, I need the IP address. Everywhere I go to find it, the adress is blank. What do I do ?

Your Mac won't have an IP address, at least not a valid IP, until you actually connect it to your home LAN. Not sure why you think you need the IP, you don't.
To connect to your home WiFi you need to know the SSID name, IE the name of your home WiFi, and the password for it. Once you have those two things click the little antenna looking icon on the right side of the menu bar and select your home WiFi name and click connect. A dialog box will pop up asking for the password, type in the password and click OK/Connect/Whatever.
