Battery life, only 3 hours?

Hello everyone I come to you tonight with a question regarding my Macbook Pro's battery life.
This computer is fairly new, it was purchased in September of 2011. At the time I was getting the advertised 6-7 hour battery life.
As time goes on, I do understand that the battery, will wind down. As of right now, I'm at 147 battery cycles and my batters "hp" (whatever that means, I don't know how that's measured.) is at 95%.
So with that, I'm now only getting 3-3.5 hours of total battery life, with my bluetooth off, and I'm only doing minor web browsing, with no flash. I'm writing this, with the only other application open being iTunes, and my timer is at 3:35 minutes @ 97% battery. My keyboard backlight is off, and my screen is only on 3 dots of the total possible. (Sorry that's very poorly described, I'm not sure of the proper way to go about it.)
So I'm wondering, is there anything that I could or should do to fix this?
The specifications for my computer are as follows, for those interested.
Mac OSX 1.7.2
2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7
8 gigabytes of ram
Thank you.

A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.
    This is from Apple.
2 to 3 hours seems very low.
what is teh standard or advertised spec for a 15 inch Macbook Pro with this battery.
I would like to know so that i can return it if this is not normal.
Its expensive so comments would be appreciated.

I say it depends on your model? average usage is about 3-4 hours depending on what you use and how you use it. Adobe Flash player eats a lot of battery power so if you are on a web page and has flash player, likely that it's eating up battery because of it's power thirsty.
Also check your systems activity monitor. It could be possible that one of your program/apps did not close right and may be still running. So check for that and end the process if necessary.
If you have a backlight keyboard, in a broad daylight, it's not necessary to have it on.
I also suggest that you use it plugged in most of the time, and it's not going to hurt or damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time. Only use on battery if you are going to places that has no access to the outlet. If you are at home, then keep it plugged in. Just keep in mind to fully drain the battery until it your MBP turns off on it's own. This is the calibration process so that you have the most accurate battery readings.
The standard for 2011 MBP is 7 hours on battery. Before that model is 10 hours, but i don't believe that previous models will last 10 hours. Last week I calibrated my battery readings from fully charged and it took 9 hours to completely drain out the battery (I have a 2011 model),
If you think it's not normal and that your battery doesn't meet your expectation then set up an appointment with the genius bar and have them test the battery. They will determine whether it is faulty or not.

    hello apple
can i find macbook air 11 inch battery life 7 hours ?

  • Hello just got my iPhone 5s but notice the battery life only holds up for 12 hours.  Can't be normal?

Hello just got my iPhone s everything went well when I all was connected..but battery life not holding up to at least 48 to 72 hours like I thought it would..doesn't last 24hours! help

That would depend on how you are using your phone.

  • Battery life 5 hours at best?? Apps you can't remove??? You've got to be kidding! !!

I've turned off things like Wifi and blue tooth.  I've added Advanced Task Killer.  Nothing I do seems to be able to extend battery life beyond 5 hours.  Even if I do nothing but unhook it from the charger with a full charge and just leave it sitting there.  5 hours and the things dead.  Can't even make it through a work day.
And what's with these apps you can't turn off???  Blockbuster Video?  Amazon MP3?  social Networking?  Battery eaters and time wasters!   What a joke!
Most expensive paperweight I've ever owned.  I hope to God I can exchange this phone for something else.

I've had mine about three weeks now......I use live wallpaper, since I'm retired and home most of the time I leave WiFi switched on.....
I usually leave it plugged in overnight to charge, unplugging it in the morning. Couple times after I've unplugged it, used it for several phone calls during the day, little bit of web surfing.....forgot to plug it back in at night when I go to bed and when I get up in the morning (@24 hours since it was unplugged)...I'll notice I forgot to plug it in, so do it.....and the phone tells me it's charging and is at 60%.
So.....with my use (and the OPS said the phone just sat on his desk all day) it only uses about 40% of it's battery in 24 hours.
I've got the screen setup to blank with 1 minute of non-use, and I've noticed that when I "wake it back up" first thing the phone does is go looking for the wifi. Doesn't look like it keeps the wifi connection alive when the phone's asleep. I don't leave Facebook running on it, and I check my e-mail manually.
Did see it reboot itself, all by itself one time....don't know what was up with that......
    I guess YMMV.......

  • Battery life 2 hours?

The info provided bellow is about my battery and my comp. My macbook pro is literaly from the first run of mac book pro's and ive had like 3 problems with it. But anyways my battery lasts about 1 hr to 2hrs max is it normal for my mac to last like this. Also i had a bumped battery(got it changed), i also still got my mac bent and others i can't remember atm. thx in advance.

The full charge capacity of a new 15" MBP battery is 5500 mAh, so you're at about 55% of original capacity. With 386 cycles, this is "normal wear". The life expectancy of a Li-based battery is 400-500 charge cycles.
RE: +is it time for a battery change or can it hold a little longer?+
Only you can answer that one. If you can live with a 2 hour per charge run time (which will continue to decay slowly), then it can hold a little longer. You won't do any damage to your machine by running on your current battery (unless you become so frustrated with the shortened battery life that you do something rash ). If you need to run longer on battery and are ready to part wtih $129, get a new one.
    Hope this helps...

  • Late-2013 13" rMBP Poor Battery Life ( 5 Hours)

I recently purchased a Late-2013 13" Retina MacBook Pro and the battery life is nowhere near Apple's rating.  I've doing light web surfing with medium brightness, no keyboard backlight, and no bluetooth, and I get less than 5 hours on a full charge.
Most reviewers seem to be getting 9-10 hours and I have no idea how that's possible.
I cycled the battery a couple of times when I first got the laptop, but otherwise haven't done anything special.  I've installed all available updates, and have only found one or two other people with this  same issue.  Nothing seems to be using the CPU excessively, so I have no idea what could be causing such a huge battery drain.
I may try restting PRAM and the SMC controller, but otherwise I have no idea what to do.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

same here, way bellow 5 hours! my old 2.3 model 2011 with normal non SSD drive used to have a bettr battery life. this is disappointing.
I think it may be Mavericks as this machine should not drain battery. all hardware used is battery efficient. don't know, i don't find anything else to plame but OS! hope apple will address that issue in future mavericks updates.
I'l report this issue. have you guys done so?

  • Macbook pro (15" - end 2011) battery life only works 3 hours - can you help me!!?

Hi since i updated to Mountain Lion, my Macbook pro 15" (december 2011) only works for 3 hours instead of 5 hours with Lion.
I've been waiting for 6 months now a release from Apple to fix this. Are you planning to do something for users like me?
for reminder number of battery cycle as up to today = 131...
Is there someone who can help me? or facing the same problem?
    Thank you

Apple doesn't read the threads. File feedback is probably the best way to reach them. You won't get an answer.

  • Satellite T230-11P - Battery life only 4 or 5 hours

I recently bought Satellite T230-11P. Once I took it out from the package I plugged the AC adapter and used it for a while and kept it until it fully charged. But life of the battery last for 4 or 5 hours. In the manual it says life of the battery last for 8 hours.
Please help me with this problem. Should I replace the battery with a new one or is it normal?

    > But life of the battery last for 4 or 5 hours. In the manual it says life of the battery last for 8 hours.
It mentioned that battery could run *up* to 8 hours. But it depends on the notebook usage -> means Watt!
    Battery:
    Voltage 10,8V
    Capacity (mAh) 5300mAh = 5,3Ah
    10,8V x 5.3Ah = 57,24 Wh
    57,24Wh / 8 h = 7,155 W per hour
This means that if you would like to use the notebook 8 hours then the notebook should not use more than 7,155 Watt in the hour.
So you have to reduce the notebook's performance to ~7Watt in order to get the 8 hours

  • MBA 11" battery life only 2 hours out of the box.

Should I have it replaced under warranty?

Out of the box... did you actually fully charge it?  I somehow doubt it.  Laptops are shipped with partially charged batteries to ensure they work.  Read the instructions and let it charge for the appropriate time and try again.  If it still does not work... take it back.

  • Help with my MBP (Late-2011) battery life~

    Hi All,
I just bought this MBP like 2 weeks ago & I found that the battery life is a little short.
Only lasted 3.5-4 hours. In saying that, I'm not doing anything extreme. Only browsing the web and doing some homework on Words & Excel.
If I happened to go on youtube or some video streaming site, the battery life only go as far as 2-2.5 hours.
Is this normal? I'm new to MBP & I'm loving every single bit of it.
I read the description on the website says the battery can last up to 7 hours.
I was wondering if my battery faulty or something? or is it just me?
I have turned down the brightness of the screen to about 40% and keyboard light is at about 20% (just estimate).
Turned off my bluetooth device. What else can I do to make the battery life last longer??
Any tips anyone can share with me?
    Thanks in advance !!

If you have AppleCare, they will mail you the battery.
If you do not have AppleCare, call Customer Relations 1-800-767-2775. See what they can do for you. CS will determine if your model MBP qualifies for a free battery.
An Apple Store is not the only place to go. There may be an AASP closer. See KB Article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304398 How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP)
Another thing you can do is to go to System Profiler. Copy/Paste the Power info here. *Do not post any serial numbers.*

  • Battery, 10% per hour?

I have an iphone 4, have had it since about a month after they came out.  I was always unimpressed with the battery life but now it's gotten worse.  Now, I know I sit here and use it frequently, but 10% of battery life per hour seems a little extreme.  And that's just if I let it sit there.  If I'm using it heavily, then it's dead within 4-5 hours.  By heavily I mean manually checking email (two accounts, yahoo and gmail), checking facebook, a couple apps, I make a phone call about once a month, not kidding there.  I get phone calls throughout the day but I never answer them, let them go to voicemail.  I take pictures, probably one a day I'd say on average.  When my son plays a game or two, angry birds and cut the rope, for like 20-30 minutes, I've seen the battery drop like 15% in that time span.  I keep the brightness on full.  I hate how dim it looks otherwise.  I use wi-fi at home, bluetooth is off.  The battery has gone down by 3% just in the time it took to write this so far (10 minutes maybe?) and that's only because the phone has been active as I received a couple text messages.
I charge it to full every night and lately I've had to recharge in the middle of the day as well.
I have read many threads here and on other sites that say to recreate Exchange email accounts (I don't have any) restore as a new phone, and complete a full chartge cycle by letting the phone completely drain and then recharge it without interruption.  I've done all these things and yet the battery life remains terrible.
I see some comments from people saying they can go 2 to 3 days without having to recharge and it makes me wonder if they keep their phone in airplane mode lol.  I just think it's time for me to replace the battery, but before I do I wanted to check one more time to see if someone had any magic cures they could share.  Oh I'm on the latest firmware and on AT&T.
    Thanks.

Update, I've noticed that my usage and standby times show the same amount, currently at 2 hours and 43 minutes, my battery is now down to 78% and I have not used my phone much at all today, just letting it sit there.  I have killed everything that was running in the background and still, the usage shows the same amount for standby and usage times.  I do not believe this is a hardware issue, it is more likely a software issue.
There is clearly something wrong. Note, however, that it is impossible to kill everything running in background. Killing apps in the Quick Launch ribbon does not necessarily kill the background process (it does for 3rd party apps, but not built in apps, which relaunch their background processes immediately). Some app queued data to be sent, and the send failed, but the app or the lower levels of the network protocol keeps trying to send anyway.
As you mentioned, the most common app that can do this is the email app, especially with if you have an Exchange account, but any push account can do it (whether push is on or off). So can Ping, the Apple store apps and Game Center. And ANY app that sends data can queue it.
