Battery life percentage jumps around

Hi!
My macbook pro is about a year and a half old. I've never had a battery problem until about two weeks ago. I use the percentage display for how much battery life I have left, and when I unplug my computer, the number jumps around a lot. I've been unplugged for about an hour, and it has jumped from 80% to 30%, then up to 70%, and now it's at 50%. Also, the computer tells me I'm running on reserve battery power after at random intervals, even when the icon says I have more than half of my battery left. Sometimes it tells me I'm on reserve after 20 minutes, when my icon says I have 80% left; other times it waits an hour and a half when it says I have 30% left. I've recalibrated it, which didn't help. I'm a student, and generally only use Safari and Microsoft Word, though occasionally I'll play a DVD.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix it? I've been a devoted Apple user for years and I've never had any problems like this before!
Thanks!
-Kate

Be aware though that the battery % remaining will fluctuate on any notebook computer. I have a late 2009 MBP and this happens depending on what I do on the computer. I go to a website and the remaining time will drop. If I wait a few minutes and not touch the computer, the remaining time will go back up till I use it again. The remaining time shown will change depending upon how much power the processor is consuming at the moment.
I actually had two late 2009 MBP and this happened on both of them.
But yes, to the OP, the battery is old, and when you replace it, the remaining time will still jump around and it is normal.

  • IPhone 4s battery percentage jumping around

Noticed this morning my phone shut off with ~ 6% battery left. When I plugged in to charge, it only took a few seconds to come back on and it was it was already at 11%. It seems to be jumping around, any advice? Previously no issues with the battery.

    Download iOS5.0.1 and install.
I suggest downloading the full file, rather than the update, and installing via a Restore. Details as follows:
    1. Download the file from the relevant link here (thereese are links to Apple servers):
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/11/10/ios-5-0-1-now-available-for-download/
    2. Connect the phone, right;clikc it and choose Back Up (you'll have to wait for any syncing to finish).
    3. Option+Click (Mac) or Shift+Click (Windows) the Restore button in iTunes and choose the downloaded file from the window that opens
    4. When asked, choose to restore from the most recent backup
    Hope that helps

  • Battery Time Estimation jumps around.

Sorry if this question has already been answered but is there a way to fix this problem?
I got this new MacBook for Christmas and I keep the Battery Time Estimation on my Finder bar. It often jumps around for example: It jumps from 7 hours to 5 to 4 to 6 and so on. It seems to always stay within 3 hours of what seems to be accurate. Thanks!

    Absolutely!
I decided to put the "test" to practice this morning and unplugged my laptop from AC power. Immediately it read that I had 4hrs, 32mins of charge remaining, which translated to 100% of battery life. I turned off WiFi, set the backlight to 50% and just let it sit with nothing running and 15 minutes later it said I now had 6hrs and 14mins of charge remaining, which now translated to 99% of battery life.
I turned on WiFi, launched Mail and iChat, then proceeded to launch Safari and began opening various threads in the discussions to read/review. My battery percentage dipped to 98% and the life dropped to 5hrs and 02mins.
After another 10-15 minutes of reading the forums and looking at some other websites I decided to launch iTunes and download a podcast that publishes on Thursdays. After it completed downloading, my battery life now read 95% and I had 4hrs and 32mins to go.
I stepped away, came back about 10 minutes later to find I had 94% battery life remaining but had 7hrs and 18mins of life remaining as the computer had been idle the entire time.
So you can see how the time jumped from 4 -> 6 -> 5 -> 4 -> 7 in a span of less than one hour of various usage states. However, throughout the entire time the percentage indicator continued to slowly decrease from 100% to 93% where it now sits as I post this.

  • Why does my battery life percentage go away?

    Hello,
Does anyone know why ever since the iOS 6 update on my iPod Touch 4g, I have lost the option to enable the percentage of your battery life that displays on the bar at the top of the screen? It is very hard for me to keep up with it. I had to get an app but I don't really use it because I have to exit out of what I'm already doing. It's easier to just take one quick look and then go back to what you were doing earlier and instantly.

lol what were you updating from? iOS 3 or something Thats the last time I know of that you could have battery % on the top bar

Also, if you install the package acpi, you can just
    acpi -b
And it will show you an estimate and percentage.

  • IPhone 5 shutting down with 20% battery life left

My iphone 5 is turning off with 20% battery life showing. I've done all the updates. When I plug it in, battery life immediately jumps to 30% left. Any clues? It's not overheating and usually I'm just typing a text message. It's shut down twice now as I try to send a picture with the message. Thanks in advance for any help.

This usually means that your battery gauge needs to be calibrated. Apple actually recommends doing this on a monthly basis, but the advice is buried in the battery info tiphttp://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html.
What you need to do given your current problem: When the phone shuts off and it isn't down around 1%, connect to a charger for just a minute or 2, or wait 15 minutes, then reboot the phone (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). Continue running the battery down until it shuts off around 1%. If it goes off above that value repeat the above process until you really do get to 1% (this will rarely take more than 2 tries).
Once it has turned off and won't restart or reboot charge it with the wall charger for 4 hours without using the phone. This should fix the problem for the moment. Going forward, about once a month run the battery all the way down and charge for 4 hours. This should prevent the problem from recurring.
If this does not work your battery may be failing. As it's still in warrantly take it to an Apple store for repair."
I am having the same problems with my phone and found this discussion last night and tried to follow this procedure but I could not get my phone to turn on and run down to 1%. It shut itself off from 15%-7% almost instantly. I rebooted it as recommended by others and turned it on and let it shut off until it got down to 7% then it would no longer turn on. even after sitting for a little while. I have charged my phone to full overnight with the charger that it came with and will wait to see if the problem persists. I am very frustrated with this and found out that my phone is a few days outside the 1 year warranty. If anyone has had this situation and found a fix without getting a new phone, please let me know.

  • Lumia 710 Remaining Battery Life % Not Correct

I've had my Lumia 710 for a few months now and over the past week the remaining battery life percentage is way wrong.  For instance, one day I noticed my battery icon was really low so I went to check the % and it said it was -4%.  I was even able to make a 10 minute call and it never died on me.  A few days ago I had about 70% but when I checked the phone a few minutes later it was around 10%.  A few times I've even had it die on me and it never gives me the critical battery warning.
This morning it was dead when I woke up so I brought my charger to work.  After charging only 30 minutes it said I had 57% battery.  But now 4 hours later I'm sitting at 98% and it looks like it won't go past that.  Is something wrong with my battery or could the battery life indicator just be way off?  It was accurate the first few months after I got the phone so I don't know what is going on.

    Hi stephwin,
    Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions!
Sounds like they may be something wrong with the battery, especially the sudden battery "deaths" without any prior warning indicate that. We would advise you to visit your local Nokia Care point and let them have a look. Nokia Lumia 710 has a removable battery, so changing it should not be too much of a hassle if it comes to that.
Let us know how you get on,

  • Is it just me? Or old MacBooks had better battery life?

Is it just me, or is the battery life on the new uMacBooks drains faster than the old models (Black)?
I just picked up a new MacBook to replace my old black MacBook and I literally notice the battery life percentage go down one point about every two minutes. My black MacBook performed WAY better than this. I can't believe a new model would be worse than an old one. Did I happen to get a faulty one? Has anyone noticed the same? Please advise.

There's nothing wrong with your new MacBook. I can definitely say that my alumMacBook gives me about an hour less of battery life compared to my White MacBook. I agree, it stink.

  • 3GS Upgraded to OS 3.1.2, How is your battery life now?

I upgraded to 3.1 only to find my battery life halved to around 4-6 hrs depending on use.
I then upgraded to 3.1.2 hoping this would be fixed, but no luck.
I use this for work but it wont even last 1 8hr business day without a charge.... not impressed!
How is your battery life since upgrading to 3.1.2?
Is Apple working on fixing this some time soon, or do I start looking for a new "non-iPhone" phone?

My battery life has been just fine with all OS versions; no change with 3.1.2

Many of us have no problems with battery life. So I'm not sure there's anything general for Apple to fix -- but your iPhone may need attention. Why not take it to to a Genius Bar?

  • Mid-2012 MBA Battery Life + High RAM Usage

    I recently purchased the lastest mid-2012 base model MBA brand new, factory sealed from eBay and started using it a few days ago. Overall its a great machine, however there were two things that were slightly bothering me;
    1) Although the battery life is decent (around 5.5- 6 hours), on the system report page (see pic 1) , it said it only had 6128 mAh of charge remaining at 99%, even though the full battery capacity was 6527 mAh. Does this mean the battery capacity has already decreased after just 3 cyles or is this normal with lithium ion batteries? However, I don't know if this matters, but the place where I'm from suffers from frequent power cuts so I had charged the computer on a sine wave inverter a couple of times (AC current line). Could this have affected it in anyway?
    2) The computer had shipped with OS X 10.8 and I upgraded to 10.8.2 the same day I started using it. While the computer doesn't feel sluggish at all (well, tbh I haven't run any heavy programs yet), even with very few of apps open, the RAM usage is very high (see pic 2)- It says I am using 2.92 GB of RAM, and have just 1.07 GB of free RAM. Is this a common problem in with ML? I was planning to install VMWare and CS6 but now I'm not too sure judging by the amount of free RAM I have atm. What should I do about it?
    Pic 1
    Pic 2
Would highly appreciate if any of you guys could help me out here. Thanks in advance !

I'm at 1.02 GB of wired RAM on a completely "naked" boot of OS X. I've got zero 3rd party apps installed or set to launch it's all core services of the OS only. Oddly enough, my 13" rMBP is at 1.18 GB off the same basic boot on 10.8.2 so it'll vary a little.
I also find that with Mt. Lion the reporting is on "tape delay" as I jokingly call it. For example when I start up an application it'll use "x" RAM and then after 5-10 minutes of just idling it'll then level out at "y" RAM. Where you have to be watchful is on 3rd party applications that will sometimes just start consuming RAM like that's it sole purpose.
On a side note, I've been fooling around with a free application on the App Store called "Memory Clean" that's suppose to take previously allocated RAM and free it up. So far so good, it's especially handy after I run a handbrake job or play some World of Warcraft where a significant amount of RAM is used. Definitely not a required application, OS X by default is quite good at freeing up and reallocating RAM but sometimes it doesn't always get the job done if you need it right now (for a VM).
In your full charge capacity photo the machine is running on battery power, although at 99%. On my MBA I get almost 280 mAh of usage between 100% and 99% that right there would close the gap considerably.
On the subject of 3rd party applications, Coconut Battery (a free 3rd party application) has a handy tool that allows you to create data points on battery health. Might be worth exploring so you have a statistical representation of the battery's health if you're interested.

  • My iphone is currently using battery life much more quickly than inthe past, and it also has an icon tht is starying on the screen, to the left of the battery charge percentage, that looks like a lock with a circle around it

i have an iphone that is using battery life much more quickly than in the past, a full charge is going to zero in a half a day or so, with out much use.
an icon is also appearing next to the charge percentage in the top right, and the icon is a circle around a lock
can anyone tell me what the problem is, and what the icon means?

The Icon meas your display orientation is locked to vertical so it wont change when you turn the phone sideways.
First thing you should check with the battery life is multitasking, which also happens to be where the orientation lock can be turned off.  check out   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211 and go from there

  • IPhone 5 battery life dramatically has changed. I can hardly go through the day without it dying. Once I hit 20% it's down hill from there. It will jump down to 9% in a few seconds and refuse to come back on. Any fixes?

I bought my iPhone 5 the day the stores in my area received them in. I was incredibly impressed with the battery life for an iPhone. The battery life was awesome up until the last few weeks. Now I can hardly make it through the day on a charge. When I get around 20% power left its only a matter of a few seconds before the batter jumps down to below 10% without me doing anything. Immediately after that it shuts off and refuses to come back on when only 30 seconds ago it said I had 20% battery power.... I'm not a terribly heavy user on my phone. I just check the social media sites a few times a day and send a few text messages and that's all. I've shut off location services, Bluetooth, automatic updating of email, closing apps and all that stuff. I'm almost always connected to wifi when I do anything with the Internet  on my phone.

  • I have had my iPhone 4s for a few months and the battery life was really good. Then around the same time I updated to ISO6 and I dropped it on the floor and since the battery life has been poor lasting only a few hours. Does anyone know why this is?

I don't know why the battery life has just become so poor. I can listen to 1 song and lose 1/2% battery life. I had all the settings the same as before updating to ISO6 and now it just goes. I did drop it around the same time but I have a stong case so I don't see how this should effect it. If anyone knows how to fix it would be a great help because I used to love iPod but I am very dissapointed.

Internal damage from fall or loose connector. Take it to
    Apple to be checked.
