Battery life shortened & other problems with 3.1.1

I have a 1st gen iPod Touch and my battery life went from about 12-15 hours (I could use it 2 days in a row at work) to 6 hours or less as soon as I installed the latest software update. I also haven't seen the wifi bars once, even though I haven't had problems connecting to the internet. (They don't show blank bars, just no bars at all.)
Anyone else having these problems? The battery life is driving me crazy.
iTunes did crash on me partway through the install and I ended up having to restore my iPod completely, so I'm trying to figure out if that caused these problems or if it's a software issue.

i just finally updated to 3.1.2 from 2.something, and the first day i noticed a HUGE loss of battery life, over 25%. this is ridiculous. this is a frist gen that i have had no battery problems until now. i could listen to music for 5hrs and then use wifi for 3 hrs and id still have life left, now on a full charge, the battery is dead just listening to music for a couple hours it dies. now i know this is an older ipod, but for this to happen the next day after an update, give me a break...

I have a user who's Active Directory password is going to expire. I had her reset her password by going to apple > system prefs > user > and clicking change password. She received the error "The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help."
I had her change her password via the kpasswd command in terminal and that changed her password on the server sucessfully however the laptop has FileVault on it. Filevault is not recognizing the new password just the old password.
I have deleted the keychain which didn't resolve and now I am going to decrypt and reencrypt the drive. I'm hoping this is an isolated issue I have over 25 laptops configured like this.

I "think" the trick was unbinding and rebinding the computer account.
After unencrypting and trying to reencrypt Filevault would still not take the new password.
Rebooted the prompt to update the keychain appeared. Updated the keychain. Filevault would still not take the new password.
Unbinded and rebinded the computer account. It worked and let me add the user to filevault.

  • After ICS update problems typing when plugged in, and battery life shortened, also Dolphin browser runs slow.

I did the update and even did a factory reset, and I am having
problems typing when plugged in to the wall charger, I get random keystrokes,
from all over the keyboard, not just the keys around the one i want to press.
Dolphin browser is running supper slow, especially when on Facebook. The
battery life has lost at least an hour.

Phones will do that when plugged in, esp with cheap chargers.. it has to do with the voltage and coveting and the digitized screen. You can google if you want more indepth there
clear data out of dolphin, check for update? also read comments on the app maybe it sucks on ics
battery stats got erased when you did a factory reset, give it a few charge cycles

  • Iphone 4 battery sometimes drains fast -- problem with Mail app?

My iphone 4 battery often drains too quickly, and I wonder if it has something to do with my Mail App.
When my phone is not playing nice, it drains at least 20% overnight while on Standby, and from 100% to 30% in around 6 hours when I use it during the day. I found a fix (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11775150) that basically says to wipe your mail account and set it up again.
This fix works, but only temporarily for me. I find that I have to keep resetting my mail every few days to get back to "normal battery" where it barely drains overnight. I only use one email account (gmail) -- could there be something going on there?
Oh, and when my battery drains fast, nothing changes when I turn off WiFi, notifications, push, etc. I usually have my mail refresh hourly.
    Has anyone had this experience?

    Low Battery?
    Warm unit on Idle?
    Loud fan?
    Likely solution is here..
I have a new 15" and had these issues, found the only working solution in the thread below, safe and easy to use. If you are worried do a
time machine backup before doing this.
    Go here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191543?start=0&tstart=0
Read post #2, put the command into your Terminal (Found inside launchpad)
           - That command is the following "sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.citrix.agadminservice.plist"
type password when asked ( you wont see any characters but it will be accepted when pressing enter)
Restart, battery, heat and noise issue is completely solved, lion is fixed.
You now have a very high quality product, that functions like it should. Macbook Pro still owns.
    Hope this helps everyone out.

Same problem with shortened battery life here with 10.6.2 (2009 unibody 15" MBP 2.53 GHz.) Shutting down and removing the battery seems to have brought fully charged battery life back from less than 2 hours to over 5 again. Didn't bother holding down the power button with the battery out though.
    A few notes:
    1. Prior to the shut down + battery removal, I had noticed unusual warmth despite the CPU being only lightly loaded. Activity monitor showed no app using more than 4% of the CPU, with just a few apps running (Safari, Mail, iCal, Finder).
    2. Months ago, just a PRAM reset seemed to fix the problem, possibly with 10.6.1 or 10.6. Can't remember for sure. But PRAM reset doesn't help any more with 10.6.2.
    3. I have never reset the SMC.
    4. I don't recall this problem happening with any of the 10.5 releases. Just with 10.6.x.
    5. The bottom of the MBP's enclosure is cool again after the shutdown + battery removal.
    6. I am also running 10.6.2 on a 2008 aluminum iMac (20" 2.4 GHz) and haven't noticed any unusual temperatures, but it's much harder to tell. And of course, there's no battery life to measure.
I'll see if the problem returns again, but it really seems like a Mac OS X problem instead of a firmware or runaway app problem. Maybe some daemon is stuck in a busywait loop or something?

  • Battery life shorten after upgrading to Mavericks

I have a mid-2011 Mac Book Air and upgraded to Mavericks recently.
I noticed my battery life have shorten from 10+ hours to aournd 6 hours with 100% baterry charged.
Did some search on this forum and it seems to be a known issue.
I did a clean install (wipe the entire SSD) with only base OS.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

You raise what I think is an interesting point, maxchlin.  [Odd that when I tried to Copy & Paste your name from above, the Hot Link pasted.  So I typed it letter by-letter, instead.]
To be honest, I didn't even think about Battery Usage with Mavericks.  (My not-thinking is because I use an iMac, that plugs-into a socket in the wall.)

  • Battery Life on iPhone 5 with IOS 7.0.2

    Hi all,
What's the average battery life on iPhone after the upgrade to IOS 7.0.2?
I tried to put my phone (with 100% full battery) on Airplane Mode before I went to bed (around 11pm).
When I checked my phone at 6.30am in the morning, it's only 1% battery left --> 7 hours on Airplane Mode???
The next night, I put my phone on standby mode (Wifi on, Location Services Off, Bluetooth Off, 3G/4G off) same time (11ish)
Next morning at 7am, 5% battery left --> 8 hours on standby with just Wifi On.
I found it a bit weird because before the IOS 7 upgrade, if I put my phone on Airplane Mode, it will last for more than a day.
Wondering if any of you guys has the same issue with the battery?
    Thanks.

I received an iPhone 5 for Christmas and had an iPhone 4.S previously which had no battery issues at all.  The new phone is diabolical in terms of battery life.  I have done all the things that people recommend on here to try and extend the battery life but to no avail.  Just sitting overnight with nothing running in the background drains the battery considerably.   What else can I do?   I have AppleCare on this phone so the people there offer to replace the phone for me BUT the replacement phone does not arrive in a new box and the respresentative was very fuzzy about the fact he would/could not assure me I would receive a brand new phone in its' box.  He just kept saying it will be a 'replacement phone' which is totally unacceptable as this phone is unlocked so we paid full price for it.   The phone is not reliable - whilst out for a full day's ski-ing (I was not ski-ing, just hanging around!) and using the phone for very light Internet browsing and only a few short e-mails, the battery just drained away in front of my eyes so I had to turn it off completely as I have no car charger yet and certainly had not thought to take my electrical charger with me (we won't even talk about the stupidity of making the new charger not fit my other Apple products (three of them!).
I really am so disappointed and don't know what to do next.   As BCCconvert asks, what can we do???  thanks for any help offered.

  • Bootcamp Windows battery life - USB power problem?

    Hi,
While the battery life on my MBP is ok under Windows (3 hours), it's not great when compared to booting into OSX where I get at least 30% more. It's easy (and right) to blame Windows inefficiencies when running XP or Vista, MS have massively improved energy performance under Windows 7. Looking into this a bit, I've found there is now a new tool to help investigate energy problems:
    POWERCFG /ENERGY
The generated power report shows that I have five cases of "USB Device not Entering Suspend". In otherwords (even though I don't have any devices plugged in) the USB components are burning at full power and not allowing Windows to suspend them to save energy. This may well explain why I'm not getting the battery life I could be, and it's really not Windows fault.
    Does anyone else see this? I'm on MBP5.5 w/ Win7 Pro x64.
Hopefully a future Bootcamp will enable full power management support..
    Cheers,
    Chris.

    Hello,
the core of the problem is the quality of the Boot Camp drivers.
The boot camp drivers allow very limited power management, therefore there is no real possibility to run Vista or WindowsXP without heavily using battery resources.
I don't think there will be any improvements in the future as Apple in not really committed to deliver better drivers (the present BootCamp power management drivers have remained virtually unchanged since BootCamp 1.2 beta, March 2007).
Just have a look at the threads about BootCamp especially about the problems that are plaguing the new MacBook Pro (mid 2009) i.e. poor sound quality and no microphone in Windows.
    Cheers
    Luca

  • Lumia 800 battery life is now worse with 12070 fir...

Upgraded the firmware to 12070 3 weeks ago (UK 3 customer) and for a couple of days I got the enhanced battery life - great.
Within a week however I was back to square one, or worse, with a full battery charge lasting 12 hours maximum. Probably worse than it was before 12070.
I take off the charger in the morning and within 20 minutes of browsing maybe a dozen web pages, couple of texts, I'm probably down to 90%.
not making calls, or sending many texts/emails/tweets... or using many of the other apps (because the battery runs down)....
    any advice?
Hardly using the phone and still seeing it out of power by 8pm every night wasnt exactly what I signed up for.
    Am I expecting too much?

When talking battery drain, it's important to know what your Lumia has going on in the background:
How many apps w/ background access?
    What apps are they?
How many email accounts do you have connected?
    What are their sync intervals.
Do you keep bluetooth on/paired while idle?
    WiFi?
is your max data connection E or 3G?
Do you find that if you're using 3G that it's on E a lot?
All of these things contribute to power drain and it's good to know. Regardless I think you need to contact Nokia for a replacement. Here's wny?
My Cyan Lumia 800 is 3.5mo old. I gave it 12070 well over a month ago.
4 email accounts. 1 is "as they arrive", the other 3 sync at 1-2hr intervals.
I keep WiFi on at all times.
    Same with bluetooth.
I have 2 background tasks: Appointile & Clever ToDo
Max data connection E while at home and 3G when not home.
When I go out and about, I play music via bluetooth earphones for 1-3 hours. I play a bit on the web and a few games throughout the day. Maybe a phone call or two. More games in the evening and then setting it face down when I sleep. I wake up and still have over %25 battery left

  • Missing ID Tags & Other Problems with Music Transfers

    Hello,
I have been having some inconsistent problems with adding songs to my main iTunes Music Folder. Occasionally, songs will transfer without some of the ID tag information, despite the transfer (or consolidate) method used. Let me explain...
My main 30000 song and 170 GB iTunes database is located on my PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz DP at home. I usually rip small portions of my CD’s on the road via my PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz (assuring that all of the tag information is correct). Once home, I transfer the iTunes Music Folder (usually only 1 GB big) from my PowerBook to the Desktop of my G5. From there, I drag the folder onto my iTunes window and allow it to duplicate directly into my large iTunes Music Folder. Once done, I delete the temporary iTunes Music Folder from both the PowerBook and the G5. I also delete the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files from my PowerBook before starting up the process with another batch of CD’s. This is how I have built most of this database and only recently begun to have problems. The problem songs always retain the song name and, since I have always used the default ID tag setting, most songs show version 2.2 to 2.4.
In my troubleshooting, I tried to make completely new iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files by using this same method with my entire main iTunes Music Folder (yes, it took a long time to finish and I had a clone for backup). Suprisingly, almost 10% of those songs suffered from the same problem! Reattempts with smaller transfers showed no change. In this process, I also noted that some song files transferred, but showed NO signs in the new iTunes Library!
As I am a big fan of the iTunes AppleScripts by Doug Adams, I have ways to discover and correct these problems. However, I still would like to find out what is causing it. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Would converting every song to the ID tag version 2.4 make any difference? Obviously, this is my most prized database of information and I want to protect it, as well as administer any preventitive maintenance that it needs for good health.
If we learn from our mistakes, then I obtained my PhD years ago,
    Dr. Z.

It shouldn't matter what size your library is - if the information is in your files then it should get imported.
    1. Are you sure your problematic mp3 files are in fact valid mp3 files? If you open Terminal.app, and type this (substituting your mp3):
    hexdump -C -n 30 ~/Desktop/Sample.mp3
You should see some hex & ASCII come back - for example:
    00000000 49 44 33 03 00 00 00 03 13 68 54 59 45 52 00 00 |ID3......hTYER..|
    00000010 00 15 00 00 01 fe ff ff ff 00 7f 00 7f 00 |..............|
All id3v2 mp3's begin with "ID3" and the 4th byte represents the id3v2 tag version (2,2, 2.2.1, 2.3, 2.4); mp3's with an id3v1 headers are a little odd, but they generally begin with "FF FB" or "FF FA". I've seen moov files masquerading... all kinds of things. These won't hold tag data, and so would exhibit the behavior you describe. I myself got duped into making these abominations by using QuickTime to select a chunk of an mp3 and renaming to "file.mp3" - when it was a full blown quicktime movie that it really exported as.
    2. Are you sure the information exists within your file at all? All tags get written back into the file (except I think rating and certainly playcount). You can use any number of utilities to get at the data, some easy (python/perl utilities) or that require compiling (id3lib, taglib). You can get use the above method (with a longer number than 30) or a hex editor and look for the values manually as well.
Using for example PyID3 (http://icepick.info/projects_old/pyid3/), download & extract; open a Terminal.app window and type:
    export PYTHONPATH=/Some/path/to/YOUR/PyID3_folder
(or you can just type up the the = and drag-n-drop the folder onto the window & hit return. Then type:
    python -c 'import id3'
Then in the examples folder, drag-n-drop the "listid3v2.py" script onto that same terminal window/session, and then an mp3 file (and hit return). If whatever information is missing from there, it isn't in your file. Note: PyID3 might have some issues with a v2.4 tag (specifically year is carried on the TDRC tag, and TYER is obsoleted). You can get an v2.4-enabled id3lib binary here:
    http://members.verizon.net/pucklock/id3Infiltr8/IDInfiltr8.htm
Find "id3info" in the support folder, and drag-n-drop that binary onto a Terminal.app window, followed by your mp3 file. It should spit back all your info (except Grouping). The application itself should do much the same, just not the full breadth of tags available - just use it on copies.
    3. Converting to a different tag version wouldn't impact most tags (year being 1 major exception) - the other conversions (latin1, unicode, blahblah) woudn't change anything if you use mainly ASCII text. It could if you're big into Ukranian Progressive Polka - and used Cyrillic to tag everything.

  • No Battery Charge and Other Problems After OS3 Install - Solution?

This relates ONLY to iPhone Users using the "PUSH" Function for Email or Other Apps!
PROBLEM: It seems as though Apple is at least aware of the problem(s), i.e. once Exchange Email or another App using PUSH is configured, there is an OS3 bug that seems to be hardware independent (impacting ALL 1G, 2G and GS iPhones, but not consistently).
SYMPTOMS: Include some or all of the following . . . rapid discharge (less than two hours from a fully charged phone, failure to charge (by AC adapter or USB to computer), failure to charge completely, perpetual dead battery icon, inability to boot, inability to automatically sleep, quite warm on upper back side, slow email, indication of a full or partially full charge dropping to no charge or dead when removed from charging source.
CAUSE: OS3 Bug prevents consistent charging, draining the battery even when plugged in to a computer via the USB or into an A/C adapter (although I've been able to intermittently charge on an A/C adapter). In push mode, the Exchange email client on the iPhone continually queries the Exchange Server, cycling the iPhone CPU and continually draining the battery at a high rate (can
WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD BY APPLE:
    1) Defective Hardware (though I'm on my third 3G in a week, so I don't think hardware is the problem . . . Apple will consider replacement with a new 3G if my third 3G has the same problem)
    2) Corrupted App in iTunes - so I manually reloaded each app directly over wi-fi, one app at a time, this worked until I configured Exchange Email, at which time symptoms immediately appeared . . . so corrupted app unlikely.
    3) Initial data transfer after email configuration . . . but symptoms continued long after this.
    4) Wi-Fi - but turning wi-fi on or off had little effect, beyond normal.
    5) Restore to New Phone - this works fine UNTIL Exchange Email is configured and activated. Thus, the time consuming practice of reload all apps, photos, music, etc. will be for naught, once exchange email is turned on with "push"
SOLUTION: Turning off "push" on your exchange email account
    1) Go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Fetch New Data
    2) Set Fetch Setting to 15 minutes to approximate the much more frequent "push" uploads and downloads. NOTE: Turning off \"push\" at this level will NOT turn off push on your exchange email account and the problem will not be resolved
    3) Scroll down and select - Advanced -
    4) Identify and select your Exchange Server account
    5) Select - Fetch -
    6) Leave settings
Phone should cool down in a few minutes and work normally. The problem can be replicated and resolved repeatedly merely by toggling "push" on and off in your exchange email configuration.
I was told that this is likely to be the "fix" until a patch is issued. No time frame was given for an actual fix that allows Exchange users to use push technology. Disappointing, since broader use of "push" technology beyond exchange was one of the big benefits of OS 3.0.
NOTE: THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR ON ALL iPHONES WITH OS3 USING THE EXCHANGE CLIENT. I have second 3G phone, identically configured (including push to exchange email) that has no symptoms at all. Go figure.

Since two days ago, my battery indicator has been indicating 100% until the phone dies, which seems to be one of the symptoms you're describing.
However, I don't use Push emails; my email client is configured to poll an imap server and has been that way since I got my phone over 6 months ago. To be on the safe side, I turned off Push anyway, but I'm still having the problem. Definitely 3.0 related as I've never had this problem before.
Perhaps it's linked to an app? Personally I don't have a whole lot of them installed: Aurora Feint, fstream, twitterific, flixster, wikipanion, google earth, urbanspoon, STM Mobile, iDicto, Air Sharing, Facebook and Apple Remote. I've removed a few and will see how it goes.

  • HT4623 Sound and other problems with Ipad 3 after ios 6.1.3 update

I purchased Ipad 3 last year and got problem of losing sound when I restored the Ipad throgh itunes. The sound came back automatically after I charged the device to 100%. Recently I got the same problem when the operating system was Ios 6.1.2 and then i got updated it to ios 6.1.3. The problem has not been solved while has been added up. Now the Ipad operation is slow, its either freezes and crashes frequently. Once it gets in sleep mode then it does not come back untill i press power button and home button togehter for sometime. I have checked all settings like mute and have restored the ios multiple times on two separate PCs but the problem is still there. Please help me what i need to do next.

Try a reboot of your ipad. Hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button simulataneously. Keep holding, ignoring the red slider, until the Apple logo appears. Release the buttons and let the ipad restart. A reboot often fixes numerous problems.
Also are you aware that by suncing with a different computer it is likely the personal stuff you had on your ipad from your imac will be removed?
The ipad is designed to sync with only one device.
