Battery Loss While Powered Off

I have a 3rd Gen iPad (64 GB, 3G) that I started using in August 2013 (It was brand new at the time, straight out of the box).
I didn't have many battery issues while iOS 6 was still out. I noticed after iOS 7 came out, that the battery drained quicker than it had before so I turned almost all of the fancy new features because longevity is my main goal.
After the iOS 7 update, I've noticed that when turning on the iPad after I turn it off (as in hold down the lock button and swipe the power icon, screen goes black) I lose battery life. One day, after leaving the iPad off for 12 hours, I went from 60% battery to about 30%. Another night, when I turned it off, it went from about 70% to 40%.
This doesn't quite make sense to me. I know that if I just lock it and put the display to sleep that it continues running in the background and that is the cause of the battery drain. By turning off the iPad, I am somehow using more battery than if I had just locked it.

i just called Apple- and this is what they said-
even though the screen in black, the light is off, the machine has stopped humming-
"macbooks take longer to shut down, so wait 5 seconds after screen is black and then shut the lid"
i am going to try this, but just to be sure, i wait a whole 5 minutes before closing the lid.
Apple person lead me through resetting (something- cant remember the name but is wasnt P- something it was like "resetting Controls" or something with a C)
it was easy and fast
1) shut down compu
2) unplug all cables from compu
3) take out the battery (turn machine over, turn circle/key thingy with coin)
4) hold power button down for 5 seconds
5) put battery back in
6) turn compu back on
Apple person gave me her e mail to write if the problem should happen again.
i will experiment and let you know what happens

  • Full Battery Drain Overnight while Powered Off. -Defective Unit or?

I bought a new iPod Classic 80gb over the weekend and had charged it the same day via the included USB cable... Powered it off in the evening before going to bed by holding the play/pause button until the screen went black and I wake up the next morning to find that the battery is completely drained and the unit won't power up until its charged again.
Ok, so I figure this might just have been a fluke occurrence and that maybe I did something wrong in turning it off- but the EXACT same thing happened to me again this morning after doing a full charge just the previous night. I powered it off by holding play/pause as soon as it finished charging. Then I get into my car this morning ready to listen to some music on my commute and I get a message saying the battery is completely drained and it needs to be recharged...
How this has happened twice in 4 days I don't know, but hopefully someone may have an idea or might be experiencing the same thing? Am I doing something wrong? I haven't loaded anything other than music onto it and this has happened twice already since I bought it just a few days ago.
There is no video on it whatsoever and the battery has drained from 100% to 0% in a matter of 6 hours, while powered off, on two separate occasions.
I'd hate to think I just wasted $260+ dollars on a dud piece of equipment but if this persists I'll be returning it by week's end as it looks to be defective.

I bought Ipod Nano 2G and have the same problem, Charge 4 hours, then, when I use it , Ipod suddenly restart and the battery drains near to 98% of capacity, or when I power off the nano after use it, next morning or severals hours later, the battery is completly drain, and Ipod doesn't response, just response until I connect to USB port of my Computer or ITrip, and show the "extremely battery low message".
I use my ipod only in my car with my iTrip car, but some times y use it for some Long travels in plane, its works ok, but some days ago ( near to sept. /8 ) start with this failures.
Here some of my Hipotesis, It's may be related with the new software version 1.3.1 ? its install some days ago trought Itunes.
If the problem is the software? some one know if exist some software to downgrade the software from 1.3.1 to older version?
I found some things about this procedure , but only works to 1.2
    Sorry for my inglish.

  • Do any Samsung WP owners have their battery drain to dead while powered off?

I've noticed my ATIV SE battery drains completely dead while powered off in just a couple days.  It has a nearly full charge when powered off and then when I go to power it on, it's dead.

It started in September which was about 2 months after purchasing the phone.  It's a recurring issue.  Yes, in my example, the phone is completely powered off for the full two days.  More specifically, the trend is I turn my phone off for about 10 hours and when I turn it back on it's lost about 12-14% battery charge.  Since posting my question, I've sent it back to Samsung Support for repair (on the second go-around now).  They replace the battery (supposedly) the first time.  The issue was worse after that.  The battery would lose about 21% charge in just 12 hours of being powered off.  The current Samsung repair log states they've replaced the PBA, updated software, and further repair is pending a hardware part (unknown) replacement.

  • Battery discharges while its OFF

I am a new Apple user. I've been a programmer on windows for more than 8 years, and I am really happy for switching over to macs.
3 weeks ago i bought a PB G4 768 RAM, combo and updated the mac os to 10.4.3 immediately. The problem I encountered is the following. I charge the battery to 100%.
I disconnect the charger. I shut it off. After about 10-15 hours, i turn on the computer, to find that its up to 90%. It lost 10% in about 15 hours. I discharge completely the battery, charge it again, check the battery lights (on the battery, and they show the battery is full, i disconnect the charger, turn it off. in 3 days i turn it back on to find that its down to 40%.
(bare with me here) I charge the battery, (again), i take it off the laptop. In three days i plug it back and it shows 99% (it didnt lose basically any charge)
my question... WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? My laptop while its off consumes so much battery?
I tried the PMU reset, PRAM etc. ITs a pleasure to use the PB but these issues make me think twice about my purchase.

coconut battery will not run on my powerbook. it will crash and an email has been sent to apple with the log.
Back to my issue. What i fear the most is that i dont know if its a hardware issue or software issue. (10.4.3)
The laptop is not 'sleeping', but its shut off and the discharge continues as if it was asleep i guess. But its off.

  • MBP powering off unexpectedly when running on mains power

I have an early 2006 MBP 15". For the past few weeks it has been powering off unexpectedly while running on mains power. If I take the battery out and continue on mains power there is no problem.
I replaced the battery with a new one but I still have the same problem with running on mains power, battery installed and powering off unexpectedly. This happens about 5 minutes after powering up.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks.

Hello J.C Thanks for your response. I tried resetting the SMC but the problem still occurred. With some further investigation I have narrowed it down to a USB accessory. Either mouse, keyboard or iPhone docking station.
Seems weird that the problem didn't occur when the battery was taken out but still running on mains power.

  • ThinkPad E455 Excessive Battery Drains When Power Off

I bought a new ThinkPad E455 two months ago with AMD processor and I use Windows 7 (64-bit) as my operating system. The problem is, since a week ago, when I turn off my laptop (completely shut-down, not hibernating nor sleeping), the battery looses 14% in less than 24 hours. This problem has never happened before. When I search for solution, apparently my problem is similar to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E535-High-battery-drain-when-laptop-is-powered-off/ta-p/1249897 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E530-Battery-drains-and-power-manager-issue/ta-p/1249887 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E440-battery-drains-when-powered-off/m-p/1527086/highlight/true#M18743. It appears that the power drains happened in other type of ThinkPad as well. Moreover, it seems that this problem is not limited to ThinkPad series (e.g: http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2324931/laptop-battery-drains-powered-shutdown.html), and more surprisingly, some of other brands experience this condition as well. My question is, what causes the power drain? I mean, the laptop just worked fine for a period of time (in my case it is two months), if it was trigerred by something, what is it? I looked for the technical updating BIOS solution in http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077068, but unfortunately the series E455 is not in the list. Of course, updating the BIOS using incompatible version is not recommended by the technical support. Please help me.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface When you think the laptop is powered off it's actually in ACPI Power State S5 with power being supplied to the power button and some of the USB sockets. So, when you shut down the laptop and then removed the power cord, if the BIOS version was lower than 1.13, the laptop was still draining the battery.I followed your suggestion, and it seems solving the problem, thank you. However, another problem arises just recently. When I was playing a game on my laptop, the battery capacity is decreasing when the AC power connected (as described by both lenovo and Windows battery gauge). I post this problem in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/ThinkPad-E455-Battery-Capacity-Reduced-When-Connected-to-AC/td-p/2106218. Oddly, the problem (seems) does not occur when I quit the game to windows. Why was this happen?

  • TS3899 Battery powered off while composing long important email how to not loose it when battery is charged.

My iPhone battery accidentally powered off while composing long important email. I've had this happen before and the emAil is gone disappeared, not in drafts etc..is there a way to make sure this doesn't happen when I unplug from charger and try to finish it or will I have to start over?

You can turn it on while connected to the power source. It may have saved your draft; but if not it is gone. Normally most apps will save work in progress. Were you using the mail app, the gmail app, or the Safari browser? If it was gmail and you were using Safari the gmail.com site will save drafts periodically.

  • Macbook Pro powers off when on battery power

Help! My MBP 17" now powers off after a couple of minutes on battery power. When this happens, trying to boot again, the system will power off again while loading the OS. The only way to get the MBP to boot then is to plug in the AC adaptor.
I've reset the SMC and reconditioned the battery. Both the OS and the battery think the battery is fully charged. This didn't happen before upgrading to Leopard.

I believe the color of the magsafe was green and that it wasn't charging. (The MBP thought the battery was at 96%.)

  • HT4060 Battery drains with iPad powered  off

    Hello,
Battery drains even with ipad 2 powered off. And batterys since i use IO7 drains a lot faster even in airplane mode etc, etc.
    What can you tell me?
    Alejandro

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Battery dsicharging even when the notebook is powered OFF

This is a new notebook, about 10 days old.I charge it to 100%, power the thing OFF (not sleep, full power off), and then after a day when i power it back on, battery is at 95% and the computer starts charging it.It's a 5% discharge in 24 hours.I thought Li-ion cells have a self discharge rate of 5% per month, not per day!  Why's this happening? Is there something wrong with the notebook? PS: I have the USB charging option disabled in BIOS. And nothing is connected to the notebook while this is happening. The notebook is powered off, no accesorries connected, and stored in the backpack i got from HP. But still, the next day, i have 95% battery and the computer starts charging the battery again.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome back! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and see that you are inquiring about the HP Envy K204TX and the Battery percentage.  You could try the HP troubleshooting documentation called Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 8). Sometimes the battery just needs to be tested and re-calibrated with the Notebook.  If this does not help, you can check your Warranty Status using the Check Your Product Warranty site.  If you are still in warranty, please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. Have a great day!

  • X220 Battery charge drains when completely powered off

The original 6 cell battery charge drains when my X220 (i7 2640) is completely powered off or hibernates. When the battery is detached no charge is lost. When I disable WOL and Always-On USB, the charge lost decreases. Is this a common issue or do I face a hardware malfunction?

The fingerprint reader will drain a fair amount of power waiting for a swipe while the system is off (unless you have this option disabled).

  • My Ipod Photo burns battery life while it is off...

Recently I bought an Ipod Photo(40GB) and every time I turn it on after it being off for at least a day, the battery is always dead. Even if it was completely full from the last turn off.
Just to clarify, I turn off my Ipod by holding the play button
for a couple seconds until the screen turns black(making sure there isn't a song playing, of course). Then I put the hold switch on, and that's it. However, like I said above, the next time I turn it on from it being off for more than a day, it is dead. As if it had been sitting there while on. I have tried resetting multiple times, and nothing.
Please help, this is very frustrating.
    Ipod Photo Windows XP Pro
      Windows XP Pro

It is used, but there is something that I forgot to say in the post; it isn't that the battery isn't good, because I can take it off the dock with full battery life and listen to it for several hours at a time(with normal battery loss, more than half left), the problem is it still burns while off. I am turning it off correctly right?(method in original post)
Short version: battery works great. Just dies while being off for a day or so.
Note: It dies with a regular message, "No battery life
    remains, charge me."
Thanks for the help anyways, any ideas?

  • 40 GB iPod Battery drains when mac is powered off

If I leave my iPod in the cradle ( connected via firewire) and the Mac is powered OFF, the battery will be drained in a few hours (or overnight). If I leave the iPod sitting wherever (not connected to anything), the battery will not be drained... normal.
I assume then that the Mac (G4 867) is sucking the juice out of the battery when the Mac is powered off. Is this a Firewire port issue or ?
I don't always leave my Mac on, and I don't always take the iPod out of its cradle... how can I stop this from happening?
    G4 867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPod Click 40GB

Is this a Firewire port issue or ?
I remember a few people mentioning this problem last year, and I think the consensus was that it's a Firewire port issue, and the only solution really is to take the iPod out of the dock when the computer is turned off. (It might work to have an external powered Firewire hub, I don't know if the computer would shut that down or not).
