Battery no longer charges to full capacity on 1-week old macbook

Just as the topic says; brand new macbook, one week old, charge stops at 95%. The magsafe does not connect itself very well either... here's the battery information from the system profiler:
Battery Information:
Model Information:
Serial Number: 9G01*
Manufacturer: DP
Device name: bq20z451
Pack Lot Code: 0000
PCB Lot Code: 0000
Firmware Version: 0201
Hardware Revision: 0002
Cell Revision: 0158
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 5553
Fully charged: Yes
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 5818
Health Information:
Cycle count: 1
Condition: Normal
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): -18
Voltage (mV): 12335
Dunno what the rest of the information means, but clearly it says "fully charged" but "not charging..." I've been keeping it plugged in to not let the charge run dry, but I'm afraid if I somehow don't leave it plugged in I will end up having some week-and-a-half old macbook with zero batteries that won't run unless I plug it in.
a) Seems to me like a hardware problem, I think someone in my house must've dropped it, the magsafe slot seems a little misaligned. I've just switched over from PC on which I used to do some hardware repairs. Any way for me to take this thing apart and just sort of adjust it myself? Hopefully this is the only problem....
b) In the case I'm not able to do hardware work like that... is this covered under whatever warranty I have? I mean, it's only a week old... I had hoped the macbook would be at least a LITTLE bit resistant to such small damages... really seems fragile and prone to breaks, judging by the massive amounts of problems with the batteries on these forums.
Help, anybody?

Seems like a couple of things going on. First, don't worry about "not charging" when your battery is between 95% and 99%. The software actually prevents the battery from charging in that range, so as to minimize the number of discharge-charge cycles that accumulate on your battery. If you unplug for a while (letting it drain to, say, 90%) and then replug, the battery will start charging.
Second, have you done the initial calibration, as your manual instructed you to do in the first few days?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490
Set some time aside and do that if you haven't.
Third, if you feel the MagSafe slot is misaligned, make a Genius Bar appointment and see what they think. If it is out, you may be able to get it repaired there while you wait.
Finally, this:
really seems fragile and prone to breaks, judging by the massive amounts of problems with the batteries on these forums
Keep in mind that Apple sells, literally, millions of computers every quarter. If 100, 500, even 1000 people show up here with a complaint, that represents a small, small fraction of actual Mac owners.

  • 1 week old macbook pro with 2.5 hrs battery time

I love this product but battery life is driving me insane.
I updated my old macbook pro to the new unibody. I transfered my pre system using time machine. I just realized that when fully charged my new computer has 2.5 hrs of battery time. This is also with better battery life selected under sys. preferences. this cant be normal right?
should I reinstall SL? you think my old macbook pro transfered some unwanted system bits?
    thanks in advance

take it in to the apple store, i'm 100% sure they will replace it free of charge, just got mine replaced today, it was 6 months old holding about 3.5 hours of charge

  • My 1 week old macbook pro battery is dying.

my 1 week old macbook pro battery is dying. i charged it to 100% then went to bed and this morning it is at 32% when turned on. What the heck?

my light does not flash in sleep mode.
Which means it isn't sleeping. Run the Console and put the computer sleep. Experiement with the sleep command and closing the lid. Does it sleep with the sleep command but not the lid? Does it not sleep in either case. In the Console, by default, you'll see all the messages that are logged. Pay attention to when you close the lid or execute the sleep command and pay attention to the log entries that occur at that time and shortly afterwards. You might find a sleep terminated type message which will give you a clue about why it isn't sleeping.
There are also programs that are known to cause insomnia. At the head of my list are all it one printer software because the drivers often constantly look for an incoming fax or the keypress from the AIO printer console.
One more thing - if you have been putting it to sleep and then disconnecting USB or FireWire devices - that's the problem.

  • Battery does not charge to full 10 Hours- only around 6.5

I just bought a macbook pro two weeks ago and I don't understand why my battery will only charge up to 6 hours vs the 10 advertised. I leave it plugged in overnight and when I turn it on it says 100% but I only have 6 hours battery left. Why is this?

The time "right when you open it up" is actually usually less than the gauge will show if you simply leave it sitting for a few minutes. Various "background" tasks occur when the computer has just woken up or been restarted, reducing the reading.
If battery run time is really important for you then the following things can substantially improve battery run time:
Screen brightness (Reducing from full brightness to half brightness alone can produce a three hour improvement in charge life with the current 15" MBPs - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446 )
    Turning off bluetooth
Making sure that you don't have a "background" process hogging CPU cycles (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473 )
Avoiding the use of "bus powered" external devices.
Avoiding leaving DVDs or CDs in the optical drive.
Keeping in "strong" signal strength areas when using Airport wireless networking
Keeping away from "flash" based websites or using "ClickTo Flash" to prevent all of those annoying video ads from chewing up CPU power (and therefore the battery) when surfing the net.
Minimising the number of tabs and windows you have open in your web browser at any time.
Joining the YouTube H.264 beta program if you spend time watching YouTube vids .
Avoiding leaving programs running unused in the background.
Minimising the amount of third party "background" software that you use.
Making sure that you have the computer Energy Saver prefs set to "put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and "Automatically reduce screen brightness before going to sleep" when running on battery power.
Remember , too, that the "gauge" isn't really an accurate measure, but simply an estimate based on the power consumed at any given moment. The time remaining will go up and down depending on usage at the time. I personally almost always use the "percentage" indicator instead of "time remaining" in the menubar battery gauge, because it gives a clearer indication of the current real situation.

  • 10 Week Old MacBook & Current Battery Capacity already at 94%

Hello everyone, I recently bought a new macbook (11/09) and mainly use it thru its power adapter, although I do use the battery occasionally. Yesterday I decided to perform a battery calibration and it went as follows: The battery was fully charged when I unplugged the computer from it's power supply (the original battery capacity also showed 100% via Coconut). I took the battery all the way down to about 1% then re-charged it completely only to return and see that the Current Battery Capacity is 94%. I've only had 10 load cycles in the 2.5 months I've had it. Here's my battery info:

Is there something going on with my battery or is it normal to lose 6% on a calibration? As I said, I have been typically using it with the power cord connected vs. just the battery. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should take it off the charger every so often, so the battery can drain and recharge. That will help some.
I can't see losing 6% of the battery as new. However, I also don't know how long the MacBook sat there prior to your purchasing it, etc. So while it seems odd, it also isn't outside the realms of possibility.

  • I have an 11 week old Macbook Pro that has 15 charge cycles and the design capacity is at 91%, is that normal or should I take my laptop into the store?

Hi, everyone I'm just wondering whether my battery life is normal. I've only had this macbook pro for a few weeks. According to coconut battery, as well as the information under about this macbook. The macbook is 11 weeks old and after 15 charge cycles it is at 91% design capacity? Is this normal or do I have a faulty macbook?

The batteries are supposed to hold 80% at 1,000 charges now - not sure when this started but was a couple of years ago maybe.
Personally I would not worry too much. If you actually notice a signigicantly bad drop in battery life after some time, instead of just by looking at numbers on charts, then yes take it to Apple, but for now, just enjoy your computer.
After more charge cycles, it may become more accurate too - when I first got my MacBook Air it was on about 94% after only 15 charges or so, now it's on about 620 and is on 84% or so which is on par with the 1000 charges -> 80%.

  • TS1365 Battery is fully charged. When I first put on my Macbook, screen went blue and nothing happened. Now, there is no fire up when I depress the start button. When I close the lid, the sleep light comes on.

Can somebody help me? When i first turned on my MacBook, it never booted up and ultimately the screen went blank. The battery is fully charged and now when I depress the start-up button, nothing happens. Its worth noting that when I close the lid, the sleep light turns on. Thank you in advance for your help. • 2 week old MacBook Pro Battery

My new MacBook 13" Pro Battery Capacity has dropped from Design Capacity 5770 to Max Capacity 5380. Is this normal or does the battery need to be changed???

Just to update you. Took it to apple and they replaced the battery. Told me there was no way that the battery should have lost 6-7% in such a short time.

  • Battery of a 4 week old macbook (2012) pro 13''. It reaches 100% after a hard time but fall down to 99% after few seconds. What is the problem?

Why does my newly bought Macbook pro 13'' 2012 battery has a hard time reaching 100%. It reaches to 100% with a longer charging but then falls down to 99% in a few seconds time. I have heard and read about calibration. But I think that the computer is young (only 4 weeks old) to be calibirated. What might be the issue here? This problem started just recently.

When my MBP is plugged into the wall (when I am near a plug, I usually have it plugged in) it will stop charging at 100% and drop slowly to 95% before auto-recharging to 100%.
Saves the circuits from charging all of the time.
I do run it on battery at least once a month down to 40%.

  • 2 week old MacBook Pro doesn't charge.

My 2 week old 13" MacBook Pro won't charge, I worked on it until my battery was completely depleted.
Now when I connect my charger it won't charge, also the LED doesn't light up.
Is my 2 week old charger broken?

  • Battery problem in my 1 week old macbook?

    Hi,
I have a new macbook with Leopard. I have noticed that if it runs out of battery, it just shuts off. There is also a message on a gray box saying my machine needs to be restarted and then it shuts off. My old macbook doesn't do that. It put the macbook to sleep instead of shutting it off.
Is it a problem with the battery? Or are the new macbooks like that?
    Thanks,
    Mike

You need more RAM for the number of concurrent processes you are running. At least 8 GBs if you plan to use Mountain Lion. You can see if that's the case:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Battery no longer charge need to be replaced and my plug is not working properly

Each time I shut down my computer and when I sign on again it tells me to com to this website to replace my battery.  I can us my computer unless it is plug in.  Also in order to get my plug to work I have to wiggle my plug in order for the computer to work.
How can I resolve these issues?

Can we have the model of computer you are asking about and information about the age of the battery and any previous warning signs from the battery/charger? It sounds like you may need a new AC plug jack and the cost and difficulty of that repair depends on the specific model involved.

  • 2 week old MacBook Pro not charging

I bought a MacBook Pro only 2 weeks ago, and to my surprise, I am already having problems with it. Although the top tool bar shows the battery as charging, and it doesnt lose power while the power cord is connected, it is not charging. The battery power is stuck at 27%, unless I unplug the cord, which obviously causes the power to drain.
Why wont my brand new MacBook Pro charge?

    > Why wont my brand new MacBook Pro charge?
Reset the PMU (power management unit) and re-calibrate the Battery ?
If this fails to make any difference call Apple.

Depends on what method you chose to restore, wifi or itunes. Speed of internet and of computer. Whether you're restoring to factory settings or from a backup. There are many factors involved.
Without knowing any other info, I would plan on anywhere from 30min. to 2hrs
