Battery not availble BUT still running off battery!?!

So yesterday, my MacBook decided to not show up... what? Randomly, out of the blue! It had previously been working just fine, about 80% health, and then, all of a sudden, it stops recognizing that there's a battery installed. Here's the funny part, though... The battery still has a charge (as shown by LEDs on the bottom), and the MacBook still runs off the battery, despite it saying it doesn't have one! Unsurprisingly, the battery doesn't charge either.
The computer will only start up if plugged in, but can subsequently be unplugged to run on the remaining battery power.
It seems the problem here isn't the capacity of the battery, but the communication between the battery and the computer.
I've tried resetting the SMC and cleaning the contacts of the battery, but neither of those had any effects.
Do I have any recourse besides trying/buying a new battery?

I have the same exact problem...totally out of the blue. You definitely don't need a new battery because my problem started couple of days after I purchased a brand new battery.
I think it might be the battery connector to the logic board. In almost all other cases with this problem, when the battery isn't recognized by the mac, then you have two of the following: it doesn't charge AND the computer doesn't run off the battery alone, even if the battery indicates that it still has juice left.
Unless instructed otherwise, I'm going to open up the computer and re-connect and clean the battery connector.
Also, do you have the updated battery software?

  • Battery indicator @ 0%, but still runs

I've had my macbook for about 2-3 years now. I have noticed the battery performance getting worse with time, but lately it has gone way down! after fully charging, the batter will show only about 20-30minutes of time, within about 3 minutes will drop to 90 percent and continue to degrade rapidly. So yesterday I decided to just let the battery die before plugging it in. Once the indicator read 0%, it continued to run (not plugged in) for about 1 hour while playing music and internet surfing and could've gone longer, but I had to leave the house. So I powered it down, and didn't plug it in. When I got back, it was completely dead, and wouldn't turn on without the adapter plugged in. So I plugged in, turned it on, and it still was reading 0% and it started charging. When I unplugged it, it went into sleep mode and wouldn't wake up until plugged back in. Even after it had been charging for 20 minutes, it still wouldn't run without the adapter.
Sorry for being so lengthy, but I hope someone out there can help!

This isn't reference in any of the online support material that I've seen. Do you have a link to support this? Just curious is all.
I had a similar issue on my wife's '09 MBP. Initially I thought it was the battery seeing as it's an older machine, but we tried resetting the SMC (after a bunch of other suggestions) and that seems to have done the trick.

I'm having similar issue after upgrade to 10.4.10. My mbp is practically new, only a few weeks old. Originally thought it was Safari and flash problem but it also happens in Firefox. Went to genius bar, in log they saw problem with airport. they said it was problem at my home wireless since computer seemed to work ok in store, though we did not have it connected to internet very long in the store and store is open net, not closed.
when i got home and started browsing, my computer crashed twice, in both Safari and Firefox. It would have connection for a few minutes and then crash. (screen slowly turning gray and then prompt to restart). I ran internet connect diagnostic and it said i was not connected even though i had strong signal on icon. i could see internet connect icon in dock switching from ethernet to wireless (no ethernet cable connected). I did the diagnostic wizard thing and got a prompt that my WEP was not in the keychain and if i would always allow it to connect for diagnostic. I entered always and entered wep for keychain. I have not had a crash since but admittedly I have not had time to really put it to a test. Also, I have been helping it along by launching internet connect along with whatever browser in an effort to wake up both the airport card and the wireless router. I don't think you should have to launch internet connect to start or keep a connection going, but it seems to be working for me so far.
I'm open to more suggestions myself since i'm not so sure the issue is solved yet.

My MBP has been running like a champ since I bought it in March. However, I started having the same exact problem after I updated yesterday.
I find that if I am on battery power I can only maintain a wireless connection for 2-5 minutes. AirPort shows that I am connected, but I cannot access webpages or email. If I turn off AirPort and turn it back on sometimes I get reconnected to the internet. The other times my computer crashes and I get the slow gray screen that tells me to reboot.
Strangely, if I stay plugged in to power I have none of these problems. I would therefore assume that yesterday's update somehow effected the power settings for my wireless card. However, all of the settings I can find look good to me. I am a Mac "newbie." Is there any way to go back to remove an update or go back to a previous system set up? I live about an hour from the nearest Apple store, so I am hoping to avoid a trip to the Genius Bar. Suggestions?

    joe,
thanks for the heads up on the power supply. that could have had more to do with my own solution than the wep and the launching of internet connect. my battery was running low and i did plug it in about the same time i was working on the connection. when i get a chance, i'll see if i can duplicate what you've experienced re power supply. we may have the same issue and maybe we'll be able to narrow it down. i'm close to an apple store and it's easy for me to drop in after work on the way home. i may be able to save you a trip. i'll report back later next week as i'll be out of town over the weekend.

    Joe,
I have duplicated what you reported about computer working fine plugged in but crashes when running off battery. I will try to get in to the Apple store on Monday or Tuesday. In meantime I guess we need to stay plugged in.

I drove over to my nearest Apple store today and naturally the problem wouldn't appear while I was in the store. The Genius took a look at my error logs and could see the problem I was having, but he didn't really have a fix for me. He did suggest rebooting from the CDs that came with my computer to reinstall the operating system if I kept having kernal panics.
Of course, when I got home the problem reappeared when I was running on battery power...my computer also had another kernal panic. Part of me started to wonder if it is a problem with my wireless router. However, I also have a MacBook still running 10.4.9 and it isn't having any problems nor is my PC laptop.
I finally gave up and plugged in the power supply. Since no one at the Apple store seems to be able to fix my problem I am hoping the "software update gods" find the error with this week's update and release a fix. Otherwise, I am going to have to dig out those CDs. How hard is it to reinstall the operating system? It sounds daunting.

The GB size of the download file is the compressed size (like .zip or .dmg). When the file is installed/uncompressed it can be 2-3 times larger.

  • Since installing yosemite my computer/screen blacks out, but still running

Since installing yosemite last week, my computer/screen blacks out, but still running. I have since rebooted everything, started from scratch and utilizing my external drive transferred all files/apps back. Did not help, in fact it is getting worse. Computer screen blacks out every 5 min or so and have to power up again. Also, continue to get Java message updates even after all have been updated over and over again. Any suggestions? Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I should clarify: I didn't know it fell out, but I check my phone often enough that there were only about 10 minutes between when I last put it in my pocket and then realized it wasn't there.
We asked everyone around us if they saw it, and like 10 people were helping us look. But my husband used Find My iPhone and the Prey app right away when we realized it was missing (again, at most 15 minutes from the last time I used it) and it was already in offline / "cannot locate" mode.

  • If my phone is broken and not insured but still under one year old. Can I go to an apple store and get it replaced with a new one?

My lock button has stopped working and need to get it fixed. Would it be possible if my phone if not insured but still under warranty to go to an apple store and get it replaced with a new one? Or do you have to be insured?

The iPhone has a one year warranty. So you should be able to get it replaced free unless you damaged it. You can check the warranty status here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

  • Battery showing 100% charge, but not running off battery

I have an Hp Pavilion 10 Touchsmart that shows a 100% battery charge, but will not run off the battery when I unplug the AC adaptor.   I have tried calibrating the battery which went okay. I have tried uninstalling the microsoft driver for the battery and reinstalling it and it did not fix the problem.I have also checked the "Battery Report" using the cmd prompt. The battery report showed everything was charging good with the battery on the laptop for many days.I checked the "Energy Report" using the cmd prompt. The energy report had some warnings, but it was all relating to energy use.I have owned this little computer for less than a year and it should not be giving me this much trouble. At this point, I think I have done everything I can do on my end especially since I cannot remove the battery without disassembling the laptop.  I do not think it is a bad battery unless it is defective because the computer sees very little use and it is less than a year old so I am thinking a software problem. Any additional suggestions?

It is my understanding Hp warranty is only 90 days which means it is not under warranty. I have owned the laptop for less than a year with it shipped by Hp on "Thur 9/18/2014 5:15 pm". I orginally thought it was not under warranty, but I just tried a Hp warranty status site and it said "2015-10-23" was the warranty expire date.

  • Disconnecting when running off battery

Everytime i remove my power cord from my MacBook Pro, i have trouble keeping ichat connected, my ineternet it fine, everything else stays connected, ichat is the only problem. It will usually stay connected for only 10 minutes or so, and when it disconnects it doesn't usually tell me at first, my friends will tell me i disconnected about 3 minutes before it actually tells me. I also tryed changing my power settings, to never putting the drivers to sleep and such, but that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have the same problem! as long as i am connected to AC power i chat stays connected no problem. If i run off the battery I continualy get disconnected. My disconnects work the same way as yours. the person i am chatting with sees me disconnect right awat but on my side it looks like i am still connected for several minutes. it even seems to accept my outgoing messages without telling me i am discconected.
Its rather annoying. Everytime there is a pause in the chat i find myself asking "am i disconnected?"

  • Brand new macbook won't run off battery, only when plugged in

I just go my new macbook last week and being new to mac computers, I didn't realize that it won't run from just the battery power until last night. The battery light shows it's fully charged. If i'm working with it plugged in and it becomes unplugged, it shuts down and when I reconnect the power cord, it resumes from the same webpage or whatever I was last working on. I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and then held the power button for 5 seconds, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what I might try or if something needs to be set up in order to run off the battery? Thanks! Leigh

    Hello leighdk,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can by all means take some good advise from the people on this board in response to you problem.
But here is the best advise, especially since you're new to Mac.
Call Apple Care or take it back to the store and have them check it out. It is under warranty. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the Mac for a completely different or give it back because you do not like it. they may try to charge you a restocking fee but this should not be the case since there is an issue with you machine.
Call Apple, see what they say... Then if you can't get it resolved then post back and maybe we can give you some sound advise.
