Battery not recognized

Hey,
Recently, my MacBook hasn't been recognizing that I have a battery installed (it shows the battery with an "x" sign at the top. For a while this did not affect the use of the battery, but today it stopped working altogether without a power cord.
Would replacing the battery solve this situation, or is there something wrong in my MacBook?

Have you done the battery update? Apple: About Battery Update 1.2.
Also check Apple MacBook: Battery not recognized or "X" icon appears on menu bar for help.
I am advising you to be sure you have done all the things in the links I posted. The reason is Apple will want to know you tried them before they consider replacing your battery. I doubt it will help you but at least you can say you tried.
The point is if you check the battery update link you will notice that Apple extended the warranty for an extra year on the battery for the original core duo Macbook and MacBook Pros. This applies even if you have no Apple Care. This is not the same as the MacBook Pro battery exchange program it is seperate.
This is the statment.
+For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.+
I had my battery replaced and it works great now.

  • MacBook Pro 2007 battery not recognized, not charging but working

I recently bought a new battery for my MacBook Pro 2007. As said in the title, it seems to work alright, but it's not recognized by the computer (X in the battery icon), and I don't think it's charging.
I tried to reset the SMC, no change. Unfortunately, I don't have any other computer to test my battery and my powercord on, to see if it's coming from either one of them. And I don't have an Apple Store around.
Do you have any suggestions ?

MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air: Battery not recognized after being fully drained

  • Battery not recognized, not charging, but not dead...AC plugged in

My MacBook recently had a dilemma of not turning on. I went to the Apple Store and the Genius Bar tech guy fixed it with a SMC/PMU whatever power reset process it's called. Now my computer turns on, it just doesn't recognize the battery. The tech guy said my battery isn't dead, it just needs to be recharged. I'm kinda concerned that he didn't bother solving the issue at the store or try to tell me what is wrong. The computer only runs off the AC adapter, but sometimes when i plug it in the MagSafe connector will quickly flash green and orange repeatedly over and over and the battery status icon will go between X and 0% or from "No batteries recognized" to "Battery not charging" or "Charging not complete". This only happens occasionally. It also might say "Calculating..." but it will always go from one of these things then back to "No battery recognized" super fast repeatedly for a long while.
Also, when i close my MacBook, it won't go to sleep immediately like it used to. So if i close it then unplug it to take it somewhere, it shuts down as opposed to sleeping. I know if it gets unplugged it might shut down cause lack of battery recognition, but why won't it sleep when i close it?
I installed the Battery Update thingy for MacBooks and i don't think it did anything whatsoever. The AC cord works, the battery works, just not together on my laptop. I'm guessing while it was in it's permanent shut down state before i went to Apple Genius Bar, it must have drained the battery power, because i pushed the button when it didn't turn on the first time and it was fully charged with five green lights, then over the next two days i kept checking it and it slowly decreased until it is now a single flashing green light. It had two green lights when i went to the store, but after i got it "fixed" it stopped recognizing the battery.
I've had this laptop for nearly two years now, and it has survived a lot. I read many forums/threads about battery failure in other MacBooks like mine, bought around the same time as mine, but my issue is a mix of all the different problems.
For example, I have the same issues as these people did with their macbooks, but none of their solutions helped me:
"my battery logo alternates between telling me the percentage and most of the time showing an 'X' in the battery, it says no batteries recognized. it even does it with the charger connected!"
"The battery has a single, rapidly flashing, light when I press the button on it."
"But it never is able to calculate a time, and if you disconnect the power, the computer immediately shuts down."
"When I take out and reinsert the battery, it'll recognize it for a minute, flash in and out of orange, and than it will say no battery available."
"In system profiler it says there's no battery installed, and the little LED lights on the bottom of the battery don't do a thing. It's as if the battery is not installed, yet it is."
"My macbook has stopped working when not plugged in. The battery is installed but in profiler it says battery: not installed. Also there are no lights on the battery to show it charging. In the menu at the top of the desktop the battery has an X in it."
"my laptop doesn't recognize my battery-- it only runs on the wall charger. I've tried popping the battery out, then back in. When the laptop isn't plugged in and I push the battery's little button, the first light flickers briefly for a second or two and then shuts off."
"I turned on my Macbook with AC power after returning holidays. I realized it couldn't charge itself, and the battery indicator showed "X" with "No batterries available.""
I searched everywhere for a solution. But it seems like i'll have to return to the Apple Store and get it fixed that way. Here's the computer info anyway:

Do you have AppleCare? It seems to me you need a new battery but obviously we can't tell how bad the battery is unless you get that battery info while it is recognized.
Try another SMC/PRAM reset and get that info. Call AppleCare about your issue if the Apple Store won't give you a new battery. (Depends how many cycles you have).

  • Please help - Battery not recognized, after totally drained

Dear all, need some advice on how solving this issue. My macbook just had its battery totally drained and now it is not recognized by it.
I have tried all "tips" from the FAQ, but none of them worked out
It seems this is a "common" issue as apple guys are listing as top 3 in the FAQs...
Need help as I am travelling outside US on a project and will be dead without baterries.
For those who cannot help, find my tip: DO NOT LET YOUR MACBOOK BATTERY FULLY DRAIN!
    Thanks

Macbooks have worldwide warranties - so maybe if you have your warranty card with you - and perhaps even if you don't - you can go into an Apple shop and get it replaced - go to the genius bar and give 'em a big smile...

  • Screwed? Battery not recognized...

So a few weeks back my battery stopped being recognized.
I called AppleCare they checked cycle count and told me I was SOL for a new battery.
Applecare expired less than a week ago and I purchased a new battery.
Turns out, the battery was not the issue at all. New battery is not recognized.
The new battery works perfect in another machine. Even my old battery is working.
So this means the issue is something else.
Of course, now am I screwed because Applecare has expired?
I mentioned this at the time I didn't think it was the battery since it worked perfectly and then one day stopped. They said because of the high cycle count it was the battery.
Now even that battery works in another machine..
    Any advice?
Magsafe light is green without battery.
Adding in battery turns magsafe orange.
Computer doesn't recognize battery at all.
    Computer says no batteries installed.
    Again, battery does work?
    Any suggestions?
    What a tick off.

Since you originally contacted AppleCare about the battery not being recognized before your extended warranty with them expired (they of course have a record of that contact), I would think that your problem is covered by AppleCare. Their original diagnosis that the battery was dead was incorrect, and that means you have an undiagnosed problem that was reported to AppleCare while you were still covered by the contract.
Contact AppleCare again. I hope they listen to reason and cover your repair.

  • Walstreet Battery not recognized

    O.K.
I managed to fix the hard drive issues (with jpl's advice). Now it won't recognize the battery in either bay.
In order to get the Wallstreet up to Panther I had to install 10.2 with the firewire drive (I only have upgrade discs for Panther). When placed back in the powerbook it saw and charged the battery. I then used XPostFacto with my upgrade discs to install Panther. I now had an X over my battery and a no battery availiable message on the pull down (it shows 3 led's). I reviewed the other issues in this forum and tried several things.
I tried to hot plug (removed and reinserted while running) nothing.
I then tried a PMU reset upon boot-up I saw the unknown boot disc icon (3.5" floppy with a flashing ?). I used my 9.1 disc to boot up (to avoid the black screen issue), and still got the X'ed out battery icon. I then chose my startup disc and rebooted 10.3, and once again got no battery availiable.
The next step I tried was to unplug the comp while on. It remained on for approx. 30 seconds. After it crashed I looked inside the power jack, the copper foil was visible but it seemed to be out of the way. Still I used a probe to push it back totally out of sight. On boot up I still got the no battey availiable message.
I dug up my old burnt out battery and plugged it into the Left bay. It poped up almost imediately, the x dissapeared, and the power plug showed up and I could get a 0%. Still it did not show a lighning bolt, but I don't know if 10.3 should. I removed it and waited for the computer to recognize the change. I plugged the new one back in and still got the X out.
It charged and worked even when the hard drive wouldn't, so I don't think it is a bad battery. Any ideas?

    Devin,
My battery fully charged reads 16.3v but it is three years old so I don't know if a new battery might read higher or lower. I can't explain why yours reads the same with only three LEDs; again it may be due to damaged electronics in the battery.
After running Battery Reset, I did check the voltage and it was 16.3v, the same as before the reset. Only one LED was lit and after approximately 10 minutes, all four LEDs lit at once and the battery showed a full charge in the Control Strip.
I also cannot explain why these batteries apparently charge to 16.5v when they are rated at 14.4v. The part number you referenced is an Apple part number but it really doesn't tell us anything useful.
I was reading over your original post and you mentioned a few points worth addressing.
    - Yes, OSX does have a lightning bolt but it is a small, black one inside the battery icon in the menu bar.
    - I have used XPostFacto several times on my Wallstreet and it has not caused any problems.
    - You said your old battery is recognized but it will not charge. So at least technically your 'book still sees a battery but you don't know if it will still charge. I see no reason why it would not charge a known-good battery but that is still an open question.
I would buy a battery from a good vendor and this is one to consider:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAPLLIWS/
This article mentions a method of reviving a lithium ion battery. As the article states, it is an extreme yet simple procedure with damage to the battery or yourself a possibility. Since you do not have access (apparently) to a known-good battery to make sure your 'book charges, you cannot be certain just the battery is the only problem, but I suspect it is. The best course of action is to return the battery for a refund and buy another brand.

I have had the same problem with my new extended life battery.  It would not boot up when the new battery was installed.  So I plugged in the phone to the charger with my old battery installed again... WHILE it was booting up (AND plugged in still...) I took out the old battery & put in the new battery.  THEN it worked fine... until I have to restart the phone again... then the same unrecognized battery symbol shows up.  So this is a problem with my phone not recognizing the new battery - WHY?  It will work great when I install the new battery during the plugged in boot up process but otherwise it will not start with it when installed from the get go...?  Isn't there anyway to force it to recognize the new battery that is just fine - it's the phone that seems to be the problem.  Please help... it's not just the battery for it works fine when I install it as described... this is a palm problem.  There have been a bunch of views of this page as well.  So please help fix this!  Thanks!

  • OS X 10.5.7 + Battery Not Recognized (intermittent)

After I've installed the OS X 10.5.7 update, I'm having problems with OS X recognizing my battery. The MacBook starts as usual, but suddenly it shows the battery icon with and "X" (as it has no battery installed) and keeps working (note that the power adapter is not connected, so the power came from the battery and it have plenty of charge left). The MacBook do this several times (intermittent) when it runs with battery power.
The battery Cycle Count is 71, and my MacBook is 11 months old (so i have 1 month left before i've to get to expend the Apple Care Plan).
    Any answer will be helpful.
    Thanks

The symptoms are similar, when I'm using my Macbook only with the battery (remember it's a new one that the Apple Service have gave me) sometimes the battery is not detected and the system goes to sleep (even if a have disabled all the configurations in the energy saving menu).
I've tried to remove the battery and use the Mac connected with the AC adapter and that way it works great.
Today i've reinstalled the 10.5.7. update and I'm still having the same problem but not as often as before but the problem persists.
Next monday I'll be sending my Macbook to the service center and any news that I get I'll tell you.

  • Brand new MacBook but Battery not recognized

I'm not sure if I just got a bad computer or what. I got my MacBook yesterday and when I plugged it in the power cord light was green and has been but when I click on the battery icon it says no battery available...
    Any advice???

    Hi ferg991,
What is the icon like when you click it, is it a battery icon with X on it or simply the icon not showing up.
Here is link that might apply to your case:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304301
But since it is brand new, better bring that back to apple store to have it check and you might get a new battery of even a new macbook with new battery.
    Good Luck.

  • Creative Zen Xtra 40GB - BATTERY NOT RECOGNIZED BY PLAY

I just received a brand new 40GB Xtra that absolutely will not recognize that a battery is installed; I see only the AC line icon at all times. I've read through many related threads; did a Disk Cleanup, turned the power-strip that the transformer is plugged into on and off several times, R&R the battery many times. cleaned the contacts, etc..., and cannot resolve the problem.
My first email response from Creative regarding the matter directed me to update the Firmware. Guess what... can't update the firmaware until the device recognizes that a battery is installed. Pretty certain they never shipped firmware that wouldn't at least let the device see the battery, let alone charge it accurately, anyway.
Waiting for the next round of emails from Creative now, but wondering if anyone here had anything else.
    Thanks!

Yes, it did seem like it was just the battery, but Creative is now talking about RMA'ing the entire unit. I did suggest that they might send me a battery to try first.
    Thanks for your input!

  • Battery not recognized as full!

My battery is plugged in (always.. see other post) and it is green indicating it is full.. but my percentage is 98% and never goes higher.. although it used to!

It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate. When did you last calibrate your batteryyet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
but my percentage is 98% and never goes higher.. although it used to!
This isn't unusual. Read this. Apple portable computer's battery does not show a full charge in Mac OS X If you have calibrated recently and this is bothering you just unplug the MagSafe until the battery drops to 93 % and then plug it in. It should go back to 100 %.

  • New Battery Not Recognized on HP Pavilion dv6-4052nr

    Hello,
So I have an HP Pavilion dv6 that I have had for about 4 years now. Everything works fine on it but within the last year the battery has slowly been unable to hold a charge. Until recently where it won't hold a charge at all and has to be plugged in. I ran a diagnostic test on it and it said that I needed to purchase a new battery. I purchased a new battery from online since I could not find a proper replacement from HP. This battery looks exactly the same as my previous battery and fits perfectly in the battery slot, but when I turn my computer on it does not recognize the battery is there. It did run off just the battery for about 30 minutes and then shut down. Now it won't charge and I have to run simply off it being plugged in. I did another battery diagnostic on my computer and it just says that it can't find a battery.
I know that many other people have had this issue with no way of fixing it and I have tried some ways to fix it such as turning the computer off, taking out the battery, holding down the power button, etc. They have not worked however. Is there any other fixes I can try or will I simply have to buy a new battery? Is there one that is more guaranteed to work through HP?
    Thank you!

    Hi @mimorgan ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv6-4052nr  Notebook and issues with the newer battery. Here is a link to test and calibrate the battery.
Here is a link to your manual page 20 for the battery part number.  Yours is a 6-Cell 55WHr Lithium-Ion Battery and the new should match the specs.
What is the part number of the new battery?
    Please let me know.

  • Battery not recognized on MacBook pro 13 in?

I bought my MBP 13 in unibody in mid 2009. Everything was fine until it started typing symbols instea of text and I finally got that fixed. Now, it won't recognize the battery. Every time I turn it on, it doesn't know what the date and time is or what internet connection I'm on. It will only work when connected to an adapter. Also, when I go on certain sites, even apple, it will say "this web page can't be identified."
Now, when I turned it on, the fans would get louder and louder and the computer randomly turns off, even
Though it is connected to the adapter.
    Please help!!!

it seems that it helped out a lot (THANK YOU!) and it now recgonizes my battery.. occasionally. when the MBP is on, it says it is charging. but if i turn it off or put it to sleep, it no longer charges. and sometimes when i turn on my computer, it still says there is no battery... wait a few minutes, and it will start charging.
can i reset the SMC many times? or could there be a different problem (need a new battery??)
thank you for all your help!

  • Macbook Pro 15" mid 2009 battery not recognized

    Hi all.
I am trying to figure out what happened here. I had a problem with my trackpad. It didn't respond well, so I followed a tutorial on how to fix it by re-adjusting the tension screw for it.
In order to reach the trackpad, I had to disconnect the battery. All turned out well, I fixed the trackpad and was super happy, but when I started the computer again, I got an X over the battery icon, saying "No Batteries Available".
I went through the support forum and saw that it might be solved by doing a SMC reset. I did that by shutting down the computer and then pressing Shift-Ctrl-Option keys together while pressing the Power button and then starting the computer again. That didn't work so I tried the method where you have to disconnect the battery and then holding down the Power button for 5 seconds before connecting the battery again and starting up the computer. That didn't work either.
Does anyone know what the next step might be?

  • Kernel task going wild an battery not recognized on MBP

My MacBook Pro is 8,2 and I'm running OS 10.8.2
A couple of days ago I first noticed an X that shows that there is no battery. Strangely enough, the problem disappears and then it comes back again.
I have tried the SMC reset with no luck.
In one of those opportunities that the battery was back on line, I was able to use Coconut to check it. It said that the battery was at 90% of its total capacity and charged at 100%.
I did noticed that when this happened, Kernel task would go crazy and start using CPU at 300%. Some people say these two problems could be related.http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259
Lat night I turned off the computer instead of putting it to sleep and this morning when I turned it on, the battery was working again. After a couple of hours of use without any problems, I put the computer to sleep. When I open it again a couple of hours later, I did notice that the computer was hot. The battery indicator was again with an X and the Kernel Task was going crazy at 300%.

I was just going through this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/19395293#19395293 and read that a user was having some Kernel problems while trying to connect to his wireless network.
I decided to shutdown the wireless and restart my computer and here is the result
No kernel going wild as it used to happen after every restart or shutdown.
After I cheked that the computer was running without a problem, I decided to reconnect the wifi and this is what it happened.
My Kernel Task started going crazy again.
I will repeat this condition several times just to chek if it was a one time thing or it repeats.
