Battery or Adapter??

Just wondering if there is a way to tell if my battery is dead or if the actual cord/adapter is broken?
It's definitely not charging  when I plug it in, nor does it make the noise when it's unplugged or plugged in. I tried several different outlets and still nothing.
I would hate to buy a new battery and it's the cord or vice versa.
Any feedback is appreciated!

Hi there!
do the LEDS< respond at all? AC adaptor makes a little bit of noise when plugged in i f you hold it close to your ear. There's an amberometer that can test if power is actually going through it, you can walk in to any electronics store and they will test it for you.
So, your pc won't power up at all now? Or is it just the battery that won't charge?

  • Powerbook alternates between battery and adapter when plugged in

The other day my PB started alternating between battery and adapter when plugged in: the symbol changes from batt to charging every few seconds, brightness goes up and down. I've managed to find a position where it will actually charge. I even tried a new adapter, but it's still extremely temperamental.
I'm afraid there's something wrong with the internal power jack, but is there anything else it could be? Any way to tweak the jack?
    Thanks!

No, there's no way to "adjust" the port. It's soldered to a small Sound/DC-In card inside the Powerbook. What's apparently happened to yours is that the cord has been jerked rougly up, down or sideways one time too many, and one or more of the solder joints has broken. Because it's now able to move, however slightly, the rest of the joints are also being stressed every time you connect or disconnect the cord. Sooner or later another will break, then another. You'll end up having to replace the card when you can no longer shim or jimmy the port so it makes proper contact.
If you're very good at very small-scale soldering, you could take the card out and try to repair it, but if you're an average ham-handed Joe like me, replacing the board is a better bet. Getting to it, while not actually difficult, is a pretty considerable adventure in an Albook, because nearly everything else has to be removed from the case first to reach it.

  • My Macbook is stuck in "Notebook Battery and Adapter Diagnostic"

I was trying to diagnose my power adapter and got my Macbook(removal battery) stuck in "Notebook Battery and Adapter Diagnostic".  I can't figure out how to exit it.  There doesn't seem to be a cancel or exit button.  I have tried resetting PRAM and doing the take the battery out and hold down power button for seconds.  My computer seems to be stuck here and I can't do anything at all.

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply, had already tried all of the above, to no avail in the end had to force quit by holding down start button.  Next morning when I started up it asked if I wanted to go into problem application or wait for start up I took 2nd option and all seems ok.  Again thank you C

  • Using iBook G3 without battery - power adapter only

I would like to use my iBook G3 without the battery - just with the power adapter plugged in. I've tried starting up with the power plugged in and the battery removed, and no luck. Removing the battery with the power plugged in shuts down the computer.
I have an old battery that doesn't hold charge anymore and needs replacing. I use this computer from home 99.9% of the time and I'd rather not have a hot battery on my lap. Any thoughts or suggestions? I KNOW it's possible to do this as I've always seen demo models in stores set up this way. I have a relatively new adapter - the one that looks like an airport, not like a flying saucer.

Theoretically, it should work, yes. Have you tried resetting the PMU?
However, I strongly recommend against running with no battery for a couple of reasons.
First of all, even a mostly dead battery usually will hold enough of a charge to save your projects you're working on if the iBook is accidentally unplugged.
Next, if Apple had really intended using the iBook this way, they would have provided a battery hatch cover. As it is, using the iBook with no battery in place would subject the terminals to dust, lint, and debris. Needless to say, this is not good.
Apple has never really called its portables "laptops." They are not designed to run on your lap, but on a hard surface. I know most of us use them on our laps, but these days, I use one of these, which my son bought me for Mother's Day. I use it folded in half, and use the foot to prop up the back so that my iBook is kept cooler than it would be otherwise. It works great.
If the heat bothers you, it probably bothers your iBook, too. You may want to look into a similar solution. One long-time Apple user has suggested an inexpensive acrylic cutting board as a lap desk, and that would work fine, too. I don't recommend running without the battery, though, even if you could manage to do it.

  • Bad battery or adapter?

So my computer has been telling me to replace the battery for a couple Weeks now,but after reading on the hp website that my laptop should work even without the battery in place while the adapter is plugged in..and mine does not,I am assuming I need a new adapter?

Then how are you charging the battery? What model is the laptop? Does a light come on somewhere on the laptop when you plug in the adapter? Does the Windows battery icon say "plugged in and charging"?

  • In search of new battery and adapter

    Hello All
I was wondering where people have bought new AC Adapters for their TiG4 Powerbooks? Are there ones out there that will work with the system? Also, how about batteries?
Thanks so much for your help
    Jeff

    HI, GreenBadger.
    Powerbook G4 Titanium battery
Good things to look for: high capacity rating (4200 mAh or better); favorable warranty/product return terms; low price. Don't confuse batteries for Aluminum and Titanium PB G4s; they are not interchangeable. Never buy any used battery. Even new ones have a shelf life; they deteriorate with age whether or not they're ever used. Try to find out the production date of any battery you consider ordering, even though this information may be hard to come by, and make sure you can return your purchase without any penalty (i.e., ''restocking fee") if it proves to be a dud.
    Powerbook G4 Titanium AC Adapter
Good things to look for: 65W or higher output capacity (the earliest Tibooks were shipped with 45W adapters; you don't want one); favorable warranty terms; low price. There is no good reason to pay a premium for an Apple-branded adapter; none of them has been particularly durable. This is one class of accessory in which Apple's offerings have no important advantages over some of the third-party adapters.

  • HP Zbook15 not charging battery; AC adapter works, Battery works bu not charging

Window 7 OS. Zbook battery wont charge. I checked it via HP battery health check and it show OK, Discharging, capacity 91%. Battery health check could came back that AC adapter not present, however it was plugged in and power the the computer. The AC adpter works and powers computer. But when battery is installed the plugged in icon does not show. The plgged in icon only shows when battery is removed. This is NOT a failed battery or failed AC Adapter problem. Both check out completely by exchange with another same model laptop. How can I get my computer to recharge the battery?

  • Battery and Adapter

I am new to MAC and started with a MAC Book Pro and an iMac. These were purchased a week ago. Today while using the MBP, I noticed that the indicator light on the adapter plug was amber or red. The bottom of my MBP is very hot and the light is only green when I first turn on the computer. Do I have a problem? I also tried the the battery download and was told that it is not needed.

I've never seen red, amber means it's charging the battery. You can also go to Applications>Utilities>System Profiler>Power and check to see how much battery life is left, maximum capacity, etc.
Since your notebooks are new I would do a complete drain of the battery, then a complete charge w/o interruption. This will calibrate your battery and maximize its lifetime.

  • Battery Killing Adapter?

Ok so I had 2 Apple designed power adapters break on me b/c the material came off the wire coil after a year of use on each.
This September past, I decided to buy an iGo power adapater as a more heavy duty altenative. Last Saturday, the adapter just stopped receiving power from the outlets, so I couldn't charge the battery. I exhanged my adapter for a new one. Last night, 5 days later, this adapter failed.
Does anyone know about battery failures that over power the adapters in the Ti series laptops. It's quite frustrating. I can't buy a new $80 adapter every year.

Hi, Christien. Your Apple adapter failures didn't have anything to do with your battery, and it sounds as though your first iGo adapter just died. Possibly the failures of your Apple adapters damaged the circuitry inside the Powerbook in some way that caused your iGo adapters to fail too, but if that were the case, I wouldn't expect everything to run perfectly on battery power, and I would have thought the iGo adapters would both have failed quite quickly and in about the same amount of time, rather than take widely differing amounts of time to fail. I suspect the problem inside the Powerbook, if there is one at all, is more likely to be in the DC-in board (or possibly the Power Management Unit) than in the battery itself, especially since your battery still seems to work fine.

  • Sattelite L300D won't start on battery, needs adapter to start

    Hi!
I've have my Sattelite L300D since April last year, and suddenly my laptop won't start when the net adapter is not connected. Battery says 100% (Fully loaded) when I'm connected, and started the system.
Anyone any idea why my laptop's not starting on battery alone?
I already updated the BIOS to version 1.50 but that does not change a thing!
(My warranty is till April, so should I send it in for repair?)
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi!
In your case I would go to a local ASP (authorized service provider) and let check your laptop from these technicians.
I think its a hardware problem, maybe the battery is faulty and so you can only start the laptop with AC/DC adapter.
    Bye

  • My battery or adapter has some glitches... It stops charging when it reaches 80% HELP!

I cannot define where the problem is... It is charging when it is in 70% below but when it reaches 80% it indicates that "plugged in, not charging" why is this happening? Help me please..

try to remove/replace the ac adapter.

  • Not sure if problem is from battery/ power adapter

This morning I tried turning on my laptop, but nothing happened!!
I tried charging it, but the light is green (meaning it is fully charged). The battery indicator light only shows 1 light out of 5. Does this mean that the battery is dead???
    Thanks!!!

The PMU reset is what was done for the Power PC Macs. The SMC reset which you linked to in your post is the correct one to do. They are the same type reset just different names for different Macs. It will not erase any data off your drive.

  • Lenovo G510 won't start when battery is on and it's fully charged

Hi there. I have my Lenovo g510 i5 notebook for 10 months, and my battery is wrong. I haven't used it on battery too much, but when I used it, I empty all of it and then charged it when it's turned down. Couple of days ago, the battery was empty I put it to charge, the orange light appears that it's charging, and day after when I put the battery on the notebook won't start, but with the battery and adapter start normally and show that the battery is 100% (fully charged). Why I can't use it on battery? Please help me.

    Hi Kocevski_91,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not starting with battery in your G510 laptop.
Please remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue, also try to perform a power drain by removing all the external devices connected to the devices and shutdown the system, now remove battery and adapter, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, connect battery and adapter and check for the issue.
If still the issue persist, perform battery gauge reset, go to power manager select advance mode and select battery tab and click on battery maintenance under this option click perform under battery gauge option. Please perform and reply with results.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,
