Battery or Heatsink problem?

Lately, my MacBook has been shutting off (no warning) at random times. It doesn't always do this, but sometimes it will shut down with 90% of my battery left, sometimes 50%, whenever it feels like it I guess. It only does this when it is not plugged in.
Is this a battery or a heatsink issue?

Do you have a new Santa Rosa MacBook or an older MacBook?

  • Relationship between battery and overheating problems?

I have several questions related to my battery.
    1) Looking at the sales page, one of the reviews says apple will replace the battery for free. I assume this reviewer is still under warrantee (which I am not, unfortunately). If there's any truth to this statement (e.g. for a while apple was replacing failed hard drives on 13" macbooks purchased around the time I bought mine. i found this out after my 3rd hard drive failure in 18 months) I would really really like to know.
    2) My battery is warped. One topic here about a warped battery says to replace it immediately, but I asked the last time I was at a genius bar (for the 2nd hard drive replacement) and they said a warped battery was no problem. I asked explicitly.
    3) HOWEVER, my laptop has a heating issue. I have been under the impression that this is standard for macbooks, so I didn't think much about it before my first hard drive failure. Now, I watch the temperature closely and have a program that lets me increase the fan speed, but sometimes the temperature can shoot up unexpectedly. Normally, i try to keep the temp ~60C, which is still like twice the recommended temperature. I'm afraid the heating problem precipitates the hard drive failure. On a whim, I took out my battery today and immediately the computer ran more stably around 60C temperature. If I put the battery back in, the temperature shoots right up again (say, if I'm watching a video). What is the relationship here? Is it a known issue? Is there any way to get them to replace the battery without me having to shell out $120?
For reference, here's the current battery info:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4526
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4559
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 179
    Condition: Good
    P. S. I almost always run the laptop of the adapter rather than the battery -- I basically only use the battery to work when I'm traveling (several times a year) or in order to transport the laptop without turning it off (pretty much daily). I assume this is why the condition is good. Also, I've never calibrated it. Huh, also this is an interesting part of a reply from someone else's thread: "you should know that Applecare doesn't cover the battery, it is specifically excluded unless it's defective." I actually was sold the extended applecare on the premise that it only cost a little more than a new battery and I probably would need a new battery before the warrantee expired. Funny.

One could probably make the argument that the fact that the battery is bulging while system profiler says that it is still good is an indication that the battery is defective. Be polite but insistent, especially since your computer is still under warranty.

  • What is going on with 6.0.2 exchanged two phones today in store all with battery draining issue problem

Guys, what is going on two phones exchanged in store today all had battery draining problems once phone updated to iOS 6.0.2.
First phone wouldn't last 3 hours usage even in plane mode function.
Second phone bit better battery life 3 hours 15 minutes usage No Apps installed on both phone and location turn off even setup as new phone.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • MacBook goes dead as soon as power cord is unplugged..time for a new battery or other problem?

For months now my MacBook has been iffy with the battery percentage. It will show 2hours then within the next minute 25 min then 10 minutes then it shoots all the way up to 3 hours. Now it won't stay on unless the power cord is plugged in...and says "not charging" at the top of the screen. Am I in need of a new battery? Or is it something else? Have never had this problem before...my MacBook is approximately 3 years old...

You are posting in an iMac forum. I'd recommend re-posting in the MacBook forum.

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • 7.0.3 battery and startup problems on ipad

Since I did the 7.0.3 update, two problems have arisen on my ipad 4.
The first is that my battery drains fast when not in use.  It used to be that if my ipad were left alone, unplugged and on but not in use, the battery barely drained.  But now it drains like I've been watching movies on it all day.  The first day after the update, it sat on the counter most of the day unused, and it shut down because the battery completely drained out.  It's been like that since. I have to turn it off now, when not in use.
Also, when I turn my ipad on, it takes forever to start up.  It just sits with the apple icon on the screen and it's like that for so long, I think it's locked up.  Eventually, it comes up.  This happens every time.
Since I never had these problems before, I'm assuming that it's a result of the update.  Prior to the 7.0.3 update, I had done the previous version 7 updates and have been using it with no trouble.  So this wasn't an update from version 6 to 7.  Please let me know if you have any ideas, thanks.

Two things that might help. Reset all your settings and reset the phone.  Use the Settings app to reset all settings. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings  Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that helps.
As far as the battery usage, check your settings. The iOS 7 update adds new features and turns them on. You may not need all of them to be on. There are many threads in this form with suggestions for reducing battery usage.

  • Hard drive, battery, and software problems

I am having a ton of problems with my macbook pro 2010
My most urgent problem is my harddrive. It was able to boot but it was a lot slower than the usual 15 seconds. Today it stayed on a white screen with a loading circle (like in the top left of the iPhone) for about 3 minutes. After that I held down the power button to restart and the boot took about a minute. After I logged in I sat staring at the pinwheel and eventually the dock popped up. I opened up the applications I needed (Safari, Preview, Activity Monitor and Evernote) and the icons just bounced for a while. When the apps opened they said I had nothing saved until I reopened the windows. I have not had a problem with that before. My HD had 66Gb free and the Activity Monitor shows about 2gb of Ram and 80-90% of the CPU  free. It has also been running very slowly saving and opening files. I did a disk verification and it said that the HD is corrupt and needs to be repaired in recovery mode. I have everything backed up to time machine, but it has had alot of trouble doing even that. My recent backups have taken about 15 minutes(~500mb), most of that time spent preparing backup.
Will I need an HD replacement?
Problem number 2 is the battery. It seemed to suddenly get worse this weekend. I use my macbook for school and usually I can get through the whole day with 60 percent left. My day usually consists of taking notes or reading from an online textbook, checking news and some other web browsing. It is 9AM and I am down to 65% from 100. I even had it in sleep for about 20 minutes and that used 2%. The system info app said the battery was in normal condition but for  some reason it doesnt hold a charge as well. Usually I only have 2-3 apps open and the brightness is a bit over half way.
I have a couple of minor software issues I would also like to take care of. Half the time I login I get a black screen except for the clock in the top right. When I move my mouse it reveals a normal login screen identical to my mouse movements. It is sort of like those black peices of paper that when you write on them it shows silver or somthing.  When I search in spotlight it always says indexing at the bottom. Doesnt affect anything but it is weird. Last thing is that sometimes when I download somthing it says my disk is full. That might go long with it being corrupt but it is very annoying because i have to try it again a few times before I can use the file. As i mentioned before I have 66gb free and this can happen with simple pages docs

Open Disk Utility>First Aid and run 'Verify' and 'Repair' Disk. That may solve that problem.
Regarding the battery, see if any of the information contained in this article will help:

Your software issues may be a reflection of a corrupt HDD.  Attend the to internal HDD and then see if the software issues still persist.

  • Battery screen freeze problem

Hello, I'm using blackberry 8700c. The screen just shows battery with red cross line image. Even though I pressed a power button or tried to reset with alt+cap+del, the false screen is still there. Is there anyone would have any suggestion for this problem?
    Thanks so much.

Try taking the battery out for 1 minute then putting it back in to see if the device reboots (may take 1-3 mins)

  • Lenovo 3000 N500 23G Battery Status LED problem.

I am having problems with the Battery Status LED on my new laptop.  The LED turns blue at around 22-30% charge and the Hardware manual indicates it should be 95%, also the LED remains lit when fully charged on battery power when it should be off. The biggest problem is that I have no idea on when the battery is charged and I should not need to boot into windows to check this.
I have already returned an identical model to the retailer for the same reason, they did confirm that the unit was faulty and send me another which seems to have the same suspected fault.
Has any one else have the same problem as me, I am not too sure if I should return the 2nd unit for a refund and look elsewhere?
I did contact Lenovo support before and was advised to get it repaired under warranty, I did not need to do this as the unit is less than 30 days old and I wouldbe entitled to a refund or replacement.
Below is an excerpt from the manual I downloaded from this website.
    Thanks, Mark.
Blue: The battery is charged to 95% or more of its capacity.
Blinking blue: The battery is being trickle-charged
Orange: The battery is being normally charged
Off: The computer is operating on battery power, and the battery has enough power
Blinking orange: The computer is operating on battery power, and the battery is charged to no more than 8% of capacity.)

The battery is going to fail on this unit; actually it is a defect in the circuit built into the battery the detects charge level.  It has been happening quite frequently with IBM/Lenovo batteries these days.  If you have warranty left, get the unit in for repair or you will be out of luck like the rest of us who bought these units with failure prone batteries and a poor excuse for product quality.  If you care to help your fellow Lenovo owners, call, email, write, picket, jump up and down, do what ever you have to do to voice your concern and complaint to as high a person as you can at IBM and Lenovo.  We have to keep the heat on at a corporate level at both IBM and Lenovo, to remind them that there is a price to pay for the fact that they do not care about their customers.

  • Is just a low battery or another problem??

Ok - so I was going for a walk the other day with my ipod nano. The battery was about 1/2 full (according to the icon) but then I dropped, it bounced and then landed in a small puddle. (Not a good day!) It wasn't totally submerged and I picked it up quickly. And, I had a cover on it that I think kept it from getting totally wet and I quickly removed the cover to get any water out. I dried it off and then went home and set it aside to dry out for about 2 days. Now, I've got it hooked up to my computer and the screen on the ipod is flashing between the apple icon and two different low battery icons. (It seems to be cycling through the three images.) I've tried to re-set it according to the directions on this website but nothing happens. Soooo...here's my question, is the battery just really really low (I've had it hooked up for about an hour now and its still doing this.) OR is it a bigger problem (probably caused by the drop and puddle. Any help is appreciated!

i think you may need a battery replacement

  • IPad iOS 4.2.1 Battery depletion issue - problem solved

After finding my battery draining 50% faster aftter the upgrade I realized that the problem might be the "find my iPad" service that I activated just after the upgrade. To test my theory, I turned the service off and recharged the battery back to 100%. Good news! The battery consumption is back to what it was before the upgrade. It's too bad that the service is such a power hog. I'll be leaving it turned off. I hope this helps some of the rest of you concerned about this issue.

If that doesn't make a difference, try restoring (after syncing) and using auto brightness option.
I did all of the above and battery drain is now back to Pre 4.2 levels.

  • Battery Plug-in Problem

I am halfway thorugh a thesis and am so ready to chuck this computer out the window.  It is a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC Notebook, dv6000 if all that helps.  I have had this notebook for nearly three years, and I have only recently encountered a problem with it when it charges.  I have all cords plugged in correctly, the adapter is in the wall (and I know the socket works), and the computer does not always charge.  If i toggle with the plug in the side of the computer, it does work, and then if it shifts, it might not.  the light may or may not come on, and the icon may or may not change to show charge status, depending on the position of the plug in the side of the notebook.
Please help me figure this out.  My father thinks it may have something to do with the connections of the pins inside the actual computer.  From the performance and the finnicky nature of my computer's charge, I want to agree.  If the plug does not charge (sometimes i put a stapler to hold it in place, that seems to work sometimes), the computer runs out of battery within 40 minutes.
Any ideas on how to fix this charge issue?  Anyone out there experiencing the same thing and has had success with the repair?
Thanks in advance for your input!

If you already have checked the problem is not the battery ( usually when the battery is new or when the battery is charged on another notebook), or the AC to DC converter, then you must check this first:
    1) Remove your battery,
    2) Unplug your power cord from the notebook,
    3) Push the power button for 15 seconds (if necessary you can hold down for 1 minute),
    4) Plug the power cord into the notebook,
    5) If the power led is on, your power adapter is probably working,
    6) Push the power button,
    7) If the computer powers on, your power adapter is probably working ( it's more certain than before),
    8) Try to use the computer,
    9) After Windows finished the entire start up process, you must insert the battery,
    10) It's expected that the battery icon shows charging.
If it happens to you,  therefore the problem is in the motherboard. The exact point it is in the IC responsible for check and control the status of the battery. Up to know I don't know where is located the fault IC. This fault IC is a Voltage Comparator, usually it is an Operational Amplifier.
If you remove the powerplug the computer will start to drain the battery until the end, but if you reinsert the powerplug  the computer WILL NOT detect, and it will continue to drain the battery until the end.
If you remove the battery with the powerplug inserted, the computer will turn off, cause it doesn´t recognize the power source from the cordplug.
Remove the power plug, insert it again without the battery and the computer must be able to turn on.
If you turn on the computer, and after this you insert the battery than the computer will start to charge the battery.
    Resume:
    A) To charge the battery you must insert the battery after the computer it is on.
    B) To use the battery power you must disconnect the power cord, but you won't be able to charge it until you turn off the computer  and remove the battery, and to follow the step A.
    I verified that the problem happens to all DV6000 ( DV60xx ), DV6100 ( DV61xx ), DV6200 ( DV62xx ), DV6300 ( DV63xx ), DV6400 ( DV64xx )and DV6500 ( DV65xx ) series.
My case is a HP Pavilion DV6104eu, that I bought in UK.

  • Wireless Keyboard & Magic Mouse - Battery Power Reporting Problem

Problem Description: OS X Bluetooth Manager is constantly reporting that my 2009 Apple Wireless Keyboard has a low battery. For instance, Bluetooth Manager reports my Wireless Keyboard Battery Level is 18%. At the same time Bluetooth Manager reports my Mouse Battery Level is 65%. Because the Keyboard Battery Level is low I am being constantly nagged by the Bluetooth Manager about Battery Level and the possibility of the Keyboard disconnecting.
I decided to swap batteries between the keyboard and mouse as part of a test to see if there is a problem with the way the keyboard or mouse reports available battery power. Sure enough it appears there is a problem with battery power level reporting.
The batteries that were in the Wireless Keyboard, and that are now in the Magic Mous,e are now reported as having a Mouse Battery Level of 65%, compared to a Keyboard Battery Level of 18%. The batteries that were in the Magic Mouse, and that are now in the Wireless Keyboard, are now reported as having a Keyboard Battery Level of 18%, compared to a Mouse Battery Level of 65%.
Conclusion, either the Wireless Keyboard, or the Magic Mouse, or both devices are incorrectly reporting the Battery Power Level. It may also be that the OS X Bluetooth Manager is incorrectly reporting the battery level of one or both devices as well.
This needs Apple to investigate & fix the issue through updates to either the Magic Mouse, 2009 Wireless Keyboard or the OS X Bluetooth Stack.
I am using Duracell NiMH 1.2V 2000MAh "Stay Charged" Batteries (same as the Apple Store battery version)
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 + Apple 2009 Wireless Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 + Bluetooth 2.0.1. Firmware Update.
So Apple Support Techs... there is the challenge; are you up for investigating and fixing this problem??
    Cheers Pete

Thanks for the link David. I used the Community Forums because I've found in the past that Apple Support do monitor them and do pick up problems with Apple gear and pass the info back to their developers. Mostly I used the Community Forums because I just couldn't find the link you provided, so thanks again.
ps Apple & Macintosh are one in the same. My Apple Wireless Keyboard & Apple Magi Mouse are actually performing as per the descriptions in their respective user manuals, especially in terms of how they report battery state through their built in LED lights. So I deduced this as a problem with the Mac-mini Bluetooth Stack, so beleive it is appropriate to this forum.
I'm sure other users have noticed this, or similar problems, so perhaps they will add their experience of this issue to my original post. When I did a search of the Community Forums using the search term "Keyboard OR Mouse AND Battery" I found plenty of similar issues.
Thanks again for the link I'll chase Apple through that channel.
