Battery percentage indicator takes a little while to update when resuming from sleep - is this normal?

Hi folks,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with Retina (13") and have noticed a pecularity with the battery indicator that I'd appreciate an opinion on please.
I've charged my MBPr battery to full (100% on the menu bar and green light on the MagSafe connector). I disconnect the power and close the lid which puts that MacBook to sleep. After leaving it overnight, I open the lid and and the unlock screen shows the percentage battery having gone down by a couple of percent (which I take to be normal) - e.g. 98%. However, when I unlock and get back to the desktop, it's still showing as 100%. Clicking on the battery icon, it shows as calculating the amount of time left. After about a minute or so, it tells me how much estimated time I've got left, and the percentage indicator updates to give me the correct percentage. When using it normally, the percentage indicator drops on the desktop as I would expect it to.
Is this normal for it to give the correct percentage on the unlock screen, but then to give the original (pre-sleep) percentage when unlocked, until it has updated and worked out how much time it's got left on battery?
I've read elsewhere that many folks have been having issues with the battery indicator since Mavericks rolled out, and there are some resets that can be done by pressing various key combinations whilst powering on. I've had the MacBook only a few days, and haven't installed anything on it - it hasn't even been connected to the internet yet - so I assumed that it should be working correctly from the off - unless there's something buggy with Mavericks causing this?
I would normally shut down a computer overnight, but I like how the MBP instantly resumes when I open the lid. Am also wondering whether it'll take a few charge cycles before the battery reaches full capacity and is properly calibrated. The system report shows that it shipped to me having undergone only 3 charge cycles to date.
Any opinions would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Gopha

After some more testing:
Disabling the battery percentage indicator and then re-enabling it causes the percentage value to update to the 'correct' value. Rebooting the MacBook also causes it to update to the correct value.
Seems like I'm not the only one with this particular issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24402123#24402123
https://discussions.apple.com/message/24406197#24406197
as a newbie to Macs and Mavericks, am I right in saying that there is currently an issue with Mavericks?
Thanks,
Gopha

  • MBP 2010 13'' completely freezing when loading from sleep after battery drain

    Hi all,
Ever since upgrading do Mountain Lion, everytime my MBP 2010 13'' goes to sleep after battery drainage, it freezes in the last "dash" of the waking up process. Furthermore I noticed that the background during wake up is not my dimmed desktop anymore as it used to be on Lion, it is the Apple logo on a white background (similar to Power up screen). I experience no other freezing stated by the community that are attributed to ML, iTunes or Safari, only this one when recovering from sleep. This last time I waited a couple of hours before power down, only resulting in abnormal heating. Already tried fully charge, fully recharge, reboot, cmd+opt+p+r, ... Anyone has this? Is it a known problem being somehow addressed by Apple? Thanks in advance!

So can anyone tell me how can I open an issue on this for Apple? Thanks.

  • Battery percentage indicator wrong on iphone4s

Today my iphone4s shut down at 5% and yesterday at 3%. So, the battery percentage indicator is showing the wrong information. Anyone else has the same problem?wonder if it is related to the battery drain issue?

I would wonder if it's related to the software not having had time to calibrate. Give it time, and try to bear in mind that the battery percentage is an indication, not precision engineering. It's only software.

You have enabled the TTY function. To turn it off, go to Settings - Phone - TTY = Off.

  • Battery percentage indicator does not show time remaining in ML as it used to show in Lion!

    Hi everyone!
I upgraded to ML and have noticed that the battery percentage indicator does not show the time remaining (charge). you need to actually click on it to see how much time the battery is going to last. OS X Lion did not have this problem.
Is it just for me or is it a bug that Apple needs to fix?!?

All the people here do not really know because all are just users like you, not from Apple

there are some apps you can download that monitor the battery percentage more accurately. Some are more reliable than others so you might have to do some research but this could be an option for you

  • How long should it take for Leopard to resume from sleep?

I recently performed a clean install of Leopard, but noticed it takes up to 30 seconds to resume from sleep. Is this normal?
Tiger would resume in several seconds (time for drives to spin up, etc), although network connectivity would lag.
I tried a suggestion from another thread regarding com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, and when I manually put the computer to sleep, wait a few minutes, then click the mouse to resume, it took less than 5 seconds.
When the computer sleeps by it self, it seems to take longer to resume. Much longer...
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

How many drives? using RAID will also take longer I think.
Does Leo save memory to disk? there is sleep, and then there is hibernation mode.
Could vary by disk brand (size, etc)

  • Battery Percentage Indicator

My daughter bought her iphone 4 in December 2010, and has an indicator next to the battery icon telling her the percentage of battery she has left. I bought my phone in February, and I don't have this indicator. Is there something I need to turn on in settings, or is this no longer on the iphones?

  • Why does my iPod 5 have a battery percentage indicator?

I have an iPod touch 5th generation that I bought in December 2012, and as long as I can remember, it has always had the battery percentage next to the battery icon. I was recently looking for online for a way to turn off this percentage, and I came across a lot of people asking how they could turn on the battery percentage on the iPod 5g. This really confused me because I have always had the battery percentage, while many people with the same iPod 5th generation are saying that they can't turn it on. Also, I can;t find a way to turn off the battery percentage, it's not under usage like on the iPhones. Why can my iPod display battery percentage while others can't?

Your iPod has a battery percent indacator because simply in the encoding on the software (almost like binary on a computer) has a line in there that states "Battery Percent Indacator <true>" When normally it would say <false>. With the mass manufacturing of apple products they run off of the same software except for Macs. Since they run off of the same software all the coding is just changed around to display this and that so it makes an iPod or iPhone, an advantage to apple products having the same software is that you could change the binary on your iPod to make it like an iPhone because all it is, is switched around to make it "different." Pretty much since they are mass manufactured the system accidently applied <true> for under the binary statement "Battery Percent Indacator" instead of <false>. Small system mix up but thats all it is. Sorry for the techy terms I do some computer work here and there. Im dumb to IT's but Smart to people that don't know anything about software. Heres a simple way of saying WHY you have battery %. It was a manufactoror mixup and you accidently got battery percent. Thats all .

  • Battery percentage indicator vs icon

How do I get the percentage (xx%) of battery life to show on my screen? Is it an App I have to download?

  • Battery Status Indicator (in menu bar) does not update

I've recently noticed that the battery status indicator in the menu bar gets "stuck," and won't update. I can force it to update by disabling and re-enabling it, or by changing the view style, but if I leave it alone, it won't change, even across sleep/wake cycles.
    Any ideas?

Actually, the problem disappeared after a reboot. I reboot so infrequently, I didn't even consider that as a solution, but something else caused me to need to reboot, and after that, the indicator works fine.
Still no idea what caused it to get stuck in the first place, but for now, it's better.
    Good luck!

  • Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
    1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
    2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?
    Cheers,
    James
nb. just in case it makes any difference, the laptop is a 17" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb Ram running OSX 10.7.3

I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
