Battery performance affected by Mountain Lion

I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2011 and I have noticed that the battery performance of my laptop has gone down after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. What should I do to improve the performance of my laptop?

I guess I am not the only one facing this problem! I hope Apple comes out with a update soon enough!
You are making the #1 mistake of all people on these forums. Never assume that some issue being blogged about actually exists. If you sit on your hands and wait for an update, you could be waiting forever.
You probably have some incompatible 3rd party software that is causing your machine to work harder than normal. I wrote a little diagnostic program to run the most common diagnostic tests. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

  • Battery life drops after Mountain Lion and then hard drive crashes. Coincidence?

On October 20, I purchased and downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2009 MacBook Pro. I soon began seeing a decrease in battery life. When hovering over the battery icon to check the time left, I noticed it said "Service Battery". The notebook otherwise seemed to operate normally. I should also note that I've never had any other problems with this MacBook Pro. By November 18, without any other problems, the hard drive crashed and was irreparable, costing me over $200 for replacement. This should not be a part that needs replacement on a 3 year old computer. Coincidence that these events happened so close in sequence, I think not. If the battery problems are known to Apple through the discussions on the Support Communities, why hasn't Apple issued a patch 4 months after the release of Mountain Lion? The new hard drive was installed running Snow Leopard and I intend to keep that OS. It's really a shame because ML has some nice features that SL does not offer. I also will not be purchasing any new Apple OS until the program has been out at least a year to allow Apple to work out the known, potentially costly problems that they seem to knowingly ignore. I'm a loyal Apple customer but this incident will have me thinking twice before running out to purchase any of their products and software immediately upon release or even a few months after.

Have you followed these instructions, specifically formatting your new HDD?

  • Macbook air batter life affected after mountain lion upgrade

after upgrading my computer with mountain lion there has been a big drop in battery life. I have a 2011 macbook air 13 inch. At least a 40% reduction in battery life. No large use of cpu as per activity monitor.

Add me to the list of macbook air users whose battery life is now about 60% what it was prior to the 'upgrade'.  My 2011 air also runs much hotter.
    Apple, please fix!!!

  • Outlook performance issues with mountain lion

I have latest updates for Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and Outlook (14.2.5).  I continue to have outlook performance issues where the ball just spins and rules aren't working as before.  I tried disk doctor and still have same problem.s  My MAC is less than a year old with 8 gig of memory.  Some performance issues with fusion and safari too but nothing like outlook.

I am not sure if this is still an issue but I wanted to share that it has been resolved. Here is how to do it

  • "service battery" after upgrading to Mountain Lion

I tried restarting the SMC of my laptop and it didnt work. prior to updating to Mountain Lion, my battery life was still okay. but after updating, it drains fast and it says that I need to have my battery replaced. "service battery" How did that happen overnight?? and is there any way for me to fix this problem??

Today it happened to me too. Service battery notice. Current charge 0% (*huh*, how can it still be running...)
This is already my third battery in my early 2008 MacBook Pro. I have the feeling that:
    1. OS X upgrades kill my batteries: I had to replace the battery after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 and now from
        10.7 to 10.8.
    2. The MacBook Pro early 2008 is a very bad series:
         - Display "clamshell" has been replaced due to broken LED issue (only half the LED's lighting up after sleep)
        - Logic board had been replaced (bad NVIDIA GPU)
-- Both these issues have been solved under Applecare, luckily.
         - Battery has been replaced 3 (THREE!) times in 3 years. The average lifespan of a battery is slightly less
          than ONE year.
For me - personaly - these issues are really the limit. After being a loyal Apple user for more than 6 years I feel quite disappointed.
I will contact a European Apple "Premium" Reseller this week to see what they are prepared to do.
Since I live in the South of the Netherlands I would have to travel about 180 km to the nearest real Apple Store (Amsterdam). The warranty has long expired, so perhaps now is the time to stop wasting money on repairs and buy a cheap € 400 laptop on linux instead of another € 139 battery...
I really, really hope that the Service Battery issue is a (bad) joke and an update of OS X will solve the issue.

  • Battery timer gone in Mountain Lion!!

I miss the battery timer! I rely on it for work and I really need it back - does anyone know how to get this (without an external app)??

Seconded, I hadn't even noticed it had gone until I just went to check how long till my air was chared and nothing there - not even the option for anything barring a percentage.
Noticed the timer is there if you click on the battery just not on the default display.

  • Mountain Lion taking longer to fully charge battery than Lion?

In Lion it took me an hour to fully charge the battery and I had roughly 4-8 hrs of battery. Now in Mountain Lion it takes me 4 hrs to fully charge the battery and it only lasts 4 hrs? Any fix for this? I already tried an SMC reset and it didn't work. Please help. Thanks.

Also, does formatting the ssd of the macbook air and performing a clean install of lion over mountain lion format boot camp partitions too or just the osx partition?

  • Mountain Lion Drops Battery Life and Freezes Often, Mountain Lion Drops Battery Life and Freezes Often, Mountain Lion Drops Battery Life and Freezes Often

I use MacBook Pro 13", 2011 edition. Since I installed Mountain Lion, my MBP's battery life drop from 7+ hours to roughly 5 hours overnight. Worse still, it freezes about once a day. Does anybody else experience this? Got tips to troubleshoot these issues?

I initially had similar issues with Mountain Lion, however I thought it was isolated to my configuration. I did make some adjustments using the command line power management tool and the difference are night and day. I never thought it amy have been a change in Mountain Lion. In any case, given the prevalence of this, I created a blog listing the changes I made and explaining it for those with increased interest.

  • Installing Mountain Lion on MacBook Pro i5 Early 2011

    Hi!
I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 i5 13" with 4GB RAM. I'm still running it on Snow Leopard. I'm just wondering if anyone has installed Mountain Lion on a similar machine and can fill me in on the performance after installing Mountain Lion. Is it ok to switch to Mountain Lion or will it slow the machine down significantly? Thanks!

Before you upgrade, make sure all your software supports it based on post July, 25, 2012 reports on
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Reports prior to this date are unreliable, as they are likely with beta releases of Mountain Lion to developers. Other pitfalls to realize include:

  • TLS connection to 17.x.x.x by Mountain Lion

For some reason my Moountain Lion continually tries to connect to 17.x.x.x. It is not trying to get updates as I have it turned off.
Also when I perform an update Mountain Lion communicates with 96.7.202.217 which is Akamai Technologies.
This is very strange why does it not go to Apple 17.x.x.x

    Pr0digy V.
This is encrypted TLS traffic (encrypted and unreadable) directed to Apple and I can not identify the application source which suggest only the Operating system is performing this comunications. I am able to view the running applications and where they a comunicating
    Eliminated
    1) Updates I have turned off automatic updates and updates can only performed manually.
    2) Time and DNS are easily identified and are not encrypted. DNS should not be going to Apple in any case as that is a specfic network setting.
    3) Xprotect is a malware incoroprated into the OS and the TSL encrypted infomration I am view is occurring ever few minutes I would say at least every 5 minutes. There is no way Xprotect is expecting updates that often.
    4) I do not use Safari so that application is not running

  • How to improve battery performance in mountain lion?

Battery backup time has decreased by more than 1 hour after installing mountain lion. I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 model.

This is a fairly common issue with macbook pro users who updated to Mountain Lion.  Hopefully Apple will fix this in 10.8.1.  Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a true fix out there right now.

  • How to correct battery drainage problem after upgrade to mountain lion

My macbook pro battery drains very fast, just used 3% as I am entering this question. This rapid battery drain started after upgrade to mountain lion. Any advice?

This appears to be a problem that's affecting a number of users and has been widely reported. My guess is you're going to have to wait till they do a software update.
There's general tips for conserving battery power on my page here that might ameliorate matters in the meantime:

  • Wireless driver triggers warm/hot macbook and low battery life after OS 10.8 mountain lion upgrade

    Hello frustrated Macbook users.
I have tried to get help on other Apple discussions but no one seems to want to help, they aren't actually reading my posts, or they hate me for some reason.
    No matter.
If you have a warm Macbook that has 2.5 hours of battery life where you used to have 4 or more, please do this simple procedure and write the result below.
    Turn OFF Airport wireless networking
Perform an SMC reset (Power Manager)
Connect an ethernet cable and use your Macbook normally. (but do NOT turn on wireless networking again)
How is your battery life after doing this?
I have a user over here who reclaimed decent battery performance if he doesn't use his Airport wireless.
    I need confirmation.
If so, I may get a USB wireless adapter and see if the battery life stays good.
Bonus points:  If you have a Mac compatible USB wireless adapter and got good results by turning off the built-in adapter, want to test it for me and report the results?
    Thanks and good luck!

    UPDATE:
Problem persists when using Recovery Partition.
Chance sthat it is third party softwae or updates is more or less eliminated.
Update 10.8.3 beta fixed the problem for one lucky early adopter.
Hypothesis: New battery charging algorithms programmed into Mountain Lion OS10.8 triggered problems from design flaws that were NOT an issue for OS 10.7 and before.
Battery replacements were successful where the replacement battery was built within tolerances that did not fail under 10.8's new charging algorithms. Other bateries did not meet those tolerances so you would get spotty results from battery replacements.  It worked sometimes, but not always.
OS 10.8.3 may have adjusted these algorithms to be less demanding on the features of the battery that were failing.
Official word from Apple is 'mum'.
