Battery power in a universal dock

When my ipod is docked and fully charged (plug symbol) does it still use the battery if it is playing whilst plugged into a wall / USB socket.
Also if you are using an ipod in a dock with power, does the ipod still go through charge cycles with the battery?
Two of the same question but phrased differently.
Just a query thanks for any feedback.

This can certainly happen.    Nothing necessary really bad, but I would fully charge it and see if it behaves erratically from this point forward.  You are at least under the 1 year warranty, and should be able to bring it in for service if you find it fails to charge.
http://www.apple.com/batteries/ explains the behavior of batteries.
I would also get AppleCare before the machine is a year old from date of purchase.   Register under http://www.apple.com/register/ if you haven't already.  Contact the store you bought it from if you are uncertain what the purchase date was, and used a card to purchase it, or at least find its serial number to give the store.

  • Does the ipod universal dock need power?

I have an ipod universal dock which I'm trying to connect to a video projector using s-video. Do I need to supply power to the universal dock in order to view videos from my 30GB ipod? onto my projection screen.

    Hi,
I do not have the universal dock, so I am not 100% sure, if from what I read from the following link
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300251#tv
It seems that you do not need the power supply to the universal dock, however, if you want to use the remote control of the dock, then you need to connect it either via a computer or iPod ac charger

  • Is the Universal dock and backup battery worth getting?

i am getting an ipod video....is the universal dock worth getting, along with the backup battery pack? i have heard that the batt. pack adds a lot of bulkiness and does not look very good with a black ipod becuase it is white (i am planin on getting a black ipod), and that the dock is only good if you want to charge your ipod standing up.....please give me some info about this!!!!!!

is the universal dock worth getting,
There is only one dock (Apple).
If you want to have a neater/cleaner desktop, it's fine.
along with the backup battery pack
There is no "the" battery pack.
There are a number of battery packs (none by Apple).
If you want extended play time away from all power, they are fine.

  • IPod Nano + USB Power Adapter (+ Universal Dock)

    Hi,
I've got an iPod Nano and a USB Power Adapter to charge it. Untill a few days ago it went fine, even with my Universal Dock between them. But since 2 days my iPod only charges when I put the Power adapter direcly into the wall plug, but with my Hi-Fi installation I'll have to use it with a multiple socket.
Does anybody know why and how to get round this?
    Thanks

possibly a fuse blown in the multiple socket plug?? or even in the power adapter itself

  • T60P w/Docking Station Battery & Power LED's Go out when Power button pushed rem batt to fix

Subject line says it - unit runs fine, battery is is good shape, replaced charger with a new spare.  With PC on the docking station and all plugged in, both batt and power lights green, pushing either the laptop power button or the docking station power button, immediately extinguished both LED's and they remain that way until the laptop is removed from the docking station and the battery is removed and then reinserted into the laptop.  PC will then boot and run normally with battery showing full or nearly full charge.  Power cord can be reinstalled and all goes fine or the PC can be inserted onto the dock and all goes well also.  But, after a normal power down, the restart problem reoccurs, etc.... Any ideas out there?

    UPDATE #3
OK, getting interesting.  Last test was to shutdown and leave off overnight, after having been successful at rebooting several times in a row beforehand.  After it sat overnight, with AC adapter plugged in, it would not boot in the morning.  Same situation as has been the case.  Pulled out battery, reinserted, and boot took off.  Later, laptop was taken to an off site meeting, whereupon, it would not boot no matter what was done with battery or adapter.  Condition repeated back at home.  I then decided to check the battery voltage and found it to be 12.78v, which from my battery knowledge for Li-Ion's should have only been a max of 12.30v for this nominal 10.8v Li-Ion Panasonic battery.  (4.1 v/cell max, nominal 3.6 v/cell)  So, it appeared to be overcharged and would be why I was seeing no problems with restarts or short-term shutdown/reboots, but only after the battery had time to fully (Over) charge.  So, I connected a 1 amp load to the battery using a 12v automotive tail lamp bulb I had around and ran the battery down to 11.78 v.  I just wanted it below 12.3v.  When battery was reinstalled in laptop, boot was successful.  At that point, I reenabled the Thinkvantage Power Manager 6.4 program thru the config.sys program, where I had previously disabled it, and then rebooted.  Once booted up, I then ran a Battery reset, which took about 6 hrs to top of the battery charge, fully discharge it (somewhere in the 9 v range) and then recharge it.  Once that completed, I removed the AC adapter and drained the PC down to about 90%, and shut it off.  This morning, it booted just fine on the battery alone.  I plugged in the AC adapter and it charged up, but only to 91%, where I had told it to stop thru TPM.  It is now set in software to only charge to 91% and stop charging until the capacity falls to 85%.  This is planned to be a temporary setting, just until I understand further what is happening.  The 'reset' capacity of the battery is now 77 WH, vs the design WH originally available as reported by the battery BIOS as 84 WH.  In other words, the new 100% capacity is 77Watt-hours instead of what the battery had two years ago when it was new.  I also just discovered a 'Important Message' related to the Battery Software Update Utility that describes a problem with certain Panasonic manufactured Lenovo batteries that sounds like what I have been fighting.  This problem battery is a replacement for the original one from 2007, which also died and completely locked out the laptop.  Until I can get the laptop shutdown and pull the battery to check the FRU/partnumber, I will not know for certain if it is indicated in the Lenovo Battery Utility Update or not, but I'm betting it is.... stay tuned.....ok - just checked the battery - it is a 42T4620 and not one of those listed in the Battery Utility Software Update - but I think is should be!  BTW, shutdown, removed battery to check P/N, rebooted - all fine.  The 'acid' test will be to leave it plugged in over night and see if it restarts okay....TWT...  oh, and in case you're wondering, I have a new laptop on order because this is nuts.......:-)

  • Universal Dock in car

Hey, I just got the new universal dock for my ipod, iphone, etc. I used to have an older dock in my car hardwired to the power wires from a cigarette lighter (12V I assume). Anyways, that worked great! the power turned on and off with the car so I wouldn't kill the battery. I switched that out for the new universal dock and it does not power get any power to my iPod anymore. Does the universal dock require more power because of the remote, etc? I can't find any voltage listing online or anywhere. Somebody help me out!!
    -Doug

    - Have you reset the dock and car system
    - Does the manufacturer say it will work with the 4G iPod and iOS on the iPod?
    - The configuration of the 4G iPod is different than previous iPods and on some docks the 4G does not fully seat in the dock.
    Sometimes this works
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
However, sometimes, the dock/car system is just not compatible with the model iPod and its IOS.Some suers have reported that an iOS update broke compatibility.

  • Ipod Nano Compatibility with Ipod Universal Dock and Remote

I have an 8GB Black 2nd Gen iPod Nano. I want to connect it to my stereo. I was told that the Apple Ipod Universal Dock would be a good solution.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E07A&nplm=MA045G/C
The website says that it is compatible with my nano, so no big deal right? I just wanted to make sure it would work fine with my iPod nano before I went and bought one. Does it come with the AV cable to connect the dock to my stereo / tv? DOes the dock have a graphical menu interface like some of the third party docks/remotes have?
Also, will the Apple Ipod Remote work with the universal dock?
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=BB5 E48CD&nplm=MA128G/A
The apple store website says that everything will be compatible, but I wanted confirmation from someone who has actually owned this or knows about this.
Can you offer any better docks/remotes ideas?

I was looking at the review CNET had for that Kensington dock.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-player-accessories/kensington-entertainment-dock-500 /4505-6519_7-31631868.html?tag=uolst
I had a question about part of the review though, I am not sure I am understanding it correctly.
"We were impressed by the remote's ability to take control of our iPod; most of the third-party iPod-dock remotes we've seen only pause the music or video, skip tracks, and adjust the volume, not browse the menus. That said, the Entertainment Dock still isn't perfect. When you navigate the menus, your TV screen will be blank, so you must rely on the iPod's screen for your visual cues. Our other gripe is that the remote seems cheaply designed: The buttons on our review model looked misaligned (if usable), while the battery cover was annoyingly difficult to pry open. We got about 30 feet of range from the remote, which is more than adequate for most living rooms."
So this means that even though the remote can navigate the menus on the iPod, you wont be able to see what you are doing unless you go to the screen of your iPod?

  • My ipod touch is no longer working with universal dock since downloading the new OS

I have the Apple Universal Dock.  It had been working fine with my ipod touch.  I just downloaded the new OS and now my ipod touch will not work with the Universal Dock.
    Any ideas?

    Hi grecokev,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
You mention that your iPod nano is no longer recognized by iTunes after an update. Reinstalling iTunes is a good troubleshooting step, and if the device still doesn't appear in iTunes, try the following steps next:
Turn off your computer and your iOS device or iPod, then turn them on again.
Check to make sure that you've installed all required updates for your computer.
Verify that the 30-pin to USB cable or Lightning Connector to USB cable is free of debris and not damaged. If another cable is available, test with that cable instead.
USB cables that are bundled with third-party products or accessories might work only to charge those products and might not transmit data. Also, if you're using a third-party case or extended battery pack, try removing the case and connecting the Apple-supplied USB cable directly to your device.
You can find these steps in this troubleshooting article:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
If the steps above don't solve it, see the section of the article called "Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed" for some additional steps to try on your PC.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • Universal Dock's remote doesn't work with iPhone Photos

Has anyone tried Universal Dock's remote with iPhone Photos? I can't get it to work.
The remote does work with iPhone music and video though.

i just bought this dock as a car dock. I have it hooked up to power 12v and output to 1/8 into head unit. Now, I have to be in iTunes music to get it to work and it only allows volume, playing of files in a playlist and to next song. Are any of you guys having issues with VERY limited use of the remote and lack of really a benefit from using a remote because you have to touch it anyways to change through songs or video??? Are you guys wondering why you even bought it if the remote is not supported as a functional addition?

  • Using the Apple Universal Dock with an old amplifier?

    Hi,
Yesterday, I bought the universal dock to hear the music I have on my iPhone on my home stereo, an old amplifier (NAD C320), connecting them with an 3.5mm <-> 2 RCA cable. I hear a little noise every 10 seconds, but there's no music.
I did the same thing with a more recent compact hi-fi (a Sonoro Cubo, with 3 years, that reads cd's with mp3 files), connecting the iPhone using a 3.5mm <-> 3.5mm, and I get the same noise.
What's my mistake? Thanks in advance.
    Best regards, Miguel Caldeira Proenca

    Hi, Thanks for your help.
I still couldn't find the time to go to the shop and test if there are any problems with the dock, but I already found an interesting answer:
    - if I connect the jack coming from the amp directly to the earphone plug (without using the dock), it all works fine; this means that the problem is either related with the dock or the phone plug that connects to the dock (the one that's used to charge the battery); this narrows the problem to two options, so I only need to go to the shop and test another dock.
Thanks a lot for your help, in the beginning I was wondering if I was doing something, your comment was helpful to understand that the problem wasn't me,
    Best regards, Miguel

  • Menu Button issue with the iPod Universal Dock with Remote

What is the status of a firmware release to address the inability of the Apple Remote to mimic the menu button on the iPod?
Is it even possible to update the firmware to provide this functionality? What is the hold up? I am boycotting further hardware purchases until this is taken care of or Apple accept s a return of my Universal Dock, Remote, Second power brick, Firewire cable, and AV cable.
It is shameful for Apple to have sold these items and not made it clear that the menu button may as well be a sticker.

  • Newest version of universal dock appears to be incompatible with my ipod Classic 120 gb.  Remote does nothing

I purchased from Apple, a new universal dock with remote (MC746LL/A) along with the proper dock adapter for my ipod Classic 120.  According to Apple the dock works with any ipod with a dock and adapter..  The remote does absolutely nothing despite a brand new battery.  The only reason I purchased this pricey accessory was to have an additional ipod station with a remote.  I could have saved a ton of money if I didn't care about a sensor on front of the unit.  Any thoughts.

You are in exactly the same boat as I. I have the same problem. I posted a query on this forum too but no help came forth. Looks like Apple could be blocking replies to iPod Classic issues since it withdrew the product. Amazing company. But incase anyone can still access this query, please help. It will help two customers of Apple if not more.
    Awaiting help !!

  • My touch will not play sound thru speakers while on the universal dock but will play when it is off

how do i get my itouch to play thru speakers while on the universal dock?

hmm if your ipod touch  will not play music tru its internal speakers while it is connected to a power cable might be beacuse of a malf. to fix this issue just restart your ipod touch while connected to a power adapter. if this does not work it may be a hardware problem. please take it to your nearest apple store. they might be able to fix the issue and if your ipod touch is under warrenty they might be able to replace it.

  • Universal Dock Model Number

I have just purchased an Apple Universal Dock (with remote), to be used to connect my Nano (and soon iPhone 3G) to a pair of Audioengine A5 active speakers.
The dock I've purchased has a model number MB125G/A.
Browsing the net, I've found the Universal Dock with model number MB125G/B.
Any body know the difference between the A and the B model?
I've tried phoning Apple tech. support but they couldn't answer the question.
I just want to make sure that I've not just purchased an out-of-date model.

It seems, percentage of the battery level is always not correct (may change suddenly ± ~30 %). I suppose, I already did this procedure that you mentioned a few times not specially and it was no change. It is strange that even changing the battery did not solve incorrect level indication. Notwithstanding this is not so important problem, I can live with this. Fast drain of the battery is the biggest problem, which is not acceptable at all.

I will try examining the connector carefully with powerful magnifier.

  • Will apple universal dock improve sound quality?

I use RCA plugs to hook up my ipod touch to my home stereo. Will adding an apple universal dock improve sound quality?

I've a 5th generation iPod 80 GB, the Composite AV cable, a Universal Dock, an Apple Remote, as well as a traditional headphone-jack-to-stereo-RCA cable I got from Radio Shack.
When I connect the Composite cable directly to the iPod, and then from there to my TV (no dock), videos play on the TV (with sound) and the iPod screen stays blank (as expected, since it re-directed the video to the TV).
When I connect the Composite cable to the dock first, then dock the iPod, I get USB power to the iPod, but the iPod does NOT see the TV - when I try to play video, the video displays on the iPod's screen instead. Also no sound. The Apple Remote works fine, however.
When I remove the Composite cable, connect the headphone-to-stereo-RCA to the 'line-out' part of the dock, connect that to a stereo, and dock the iPod I get sound, but of course no video. My Apple Remote still works as well of course. An interesting side note is that despite being labeled 'line out', I need to crank the volume to max for the sound to work correctly (a 'line out' should not be affected by the volume setting).
So... the problem appears to be the Dock. I'm gonna take my set-up down to an Apple store and see what they can do for me.
