Battery pretty much dead after 1 year...

I've had my powerbook for a little over a year and now my battery appears to be already dead. I usually keep it plugged into AC but recently I found that my battery life is about 10 minutes now. I used to get a good couple hours out of it in the past but not now.
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 614
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 613
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12518
Cycle Count: 322
My question is, is this normal for batteries after barely even a year? I purchased the extended apple care protection for the next two years but they are telling me that I have to foot the bill for this one, 98 bucks! And....the new battery will only come with a 90 day warranty so if my battery goes dead again after 90 days, it's coming out of my pocket again.
What's the deal with these batteries! Anyone know the policy on replacing batteries? I've noticed on these forums that some people get their batteries replaced by apple. What's the time frame for getting ur battery replaced for free by APP? even if you've purchased the 2 yr extension plan?

<When calling apple care I specifically asked him whether it was better to leave the laptop plugged in or run it off the battery. He said plugged in with no hesitation.>
I don't know how Apple trains their Tech support personnel, but it seems that there should be some sort of product knowledge training for these people. When in times past, I have called AppleCare, I have gotten knowledgeable representatives and at other times, I question the knowledge a tech supp rep has. It seems hit and miss for me.
According to Apple's own website: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html, quoted "Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her iBook on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month. "
With that being said and quoted, it may behoove Apple to require their tech support reps to attend Product Knowledge courses every now and then so they will be handily able to answer our questions.
In terms of Apple recommending charging and discharging the battery at least once per month, don't take to heart that they mean all the way to the sleep state, or below 10%. That will definitely wear your battery out quicker than you would probably want. In my normal use, I usually only allow my computer to discharge to no lower than 15% before I plug it in again, if I can remedy that, or if I have available a power outlet to plug into. If I do discharge below that, I just save my work and just shut down my machine until I can plug in again.
If storing a battery for any length of time, never place it in a freezer. In a refrigerator is fine, with the battery discharge to 40-50% of full capacity. I know this is probably more information than you care to want to know, but I thought about it some more, and I couldn't control the flow of my rambling and typing. LOL.

  • WRT54G: Dead after a year?

I've had this WRT54G for a year or so, it's worked well since I bought it.  However tonight my network just died completely out of nowhere.  I couldn't figure out what the problem was, because my router was still getting a DHCP server from the modem and was giving my computers on the network their correct addresses.  However, I could not ping/traceroute ANYTHING outside of my network.
I then took my computer and hardwired it straight to the modem.  Everything works fine, obviously since I am posting this.  I tried soft reseting the router.  That did not work.  I tried checking all the settings, they were all fine.  I tried a hard reset by allowing factory defaults and reconfiguring the entire router again, that also did nothing.  I am pretty much assuming the router is dead.  I've tried about everything short of opening it up which would not help the situtation.
I guess my question is:  Is it normal for a linksys router to die after a year?  A lot of the linksys routers I've owned have not lasted more than two years, which in my opinion, is really, really bad.  I would suggest Cisco to work on the longevity of their routers, because I'm probably not going to buy one of their products this time.

As you can login to your router's web interface you should first upgrade it's firmware...
Download the Router's firmware from here
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Dead after 2 years 4 months, should I be angry?

I posted my woes elsewhere but it's true, my hard drive is fried. I had a long chat in Japanese with an Apple Support staff and all he could do was appologize and tell me that if Apple does the repaire that it will cost apron 500 USD; he gave me the number for a couple of other companies that can repair the disk and said I should shop around.
Here's my beef: I had used a Sotec computer for 6 years without incident, leaving it on 24/7 and the cost was nominal. The iMac was 2800 USD and breaks after 2 years. Yeah, maybe I should have bought the Applecare but, honestly, if you're spending that much money on a computer don't you expect that it should be okay for 2 years? Should I be angry?
My first thought is that Apple doesn't make the hardware but then I checked a little here and read, "Because Apple makes the hardware, the operating system, and many applications, Apple products are truly integrated systems". So, whose fault is it? I leave my computer on pretty much 24/7 in an air-conditioned room; I do word processing, surfing and a good bit of FB'ing and that's it. Two years seems exteream.
Costwise I should be fine. I have two warranty options from the store I originally bought it. It just takes time; it's a trust issue, too.
So, tell me if I should be angry at Apple. I honestly won't know until I speak with the English customer service rep and hear their explanation.

My parents still use the tube television they bought in the late 60' in one of their guest rooms and it works just fine. It's that kind of longevity I'd like to expect from a product but this age things are too complex, they're obsolete in a much shorter time span, so I guess it makes sense that it could die in two years.
A lot of it has to do with consumer demand for inexpensive products, especially high tech ones. I have some old "enterprise class" 2 GB SCSI hard drives that probably will outlast any of the SATA ones in any of my current Macs. But they were insanely expensive by current standards, about $70 per GB of capacity, & maybe a tenth as fast as even the cheapest SATA drive on the market today.
Something similar applies to that old TV: in terms of resolution & picture accuracy, it probably cost several times what a contemporary one costs today.
Almost no consumer would accept that kind of price/performance ratio today; in fact, we demand that the price/performance ratio constantly improve or we just won't buy new stuff. For years Apple tried to remain totally aloof from the highly competitive commodity market this creates, & it almost killed the company: Macs lasted practically forever but became just too expensive for most people to afford.
Today, they offer very competitive price/performance ratios; & their unique combination of close hardware/software integration, user friendliness, excellent esthetics, & all the rest of it keep them from becoming just another commodity computer; but consumers still won't pay much of a premium for that, much less for the far less tangible & quite expensive benefits of very long average life expectancy.

  • Pretty Much Dead Connection :(

Hey guys I'll make this quick! Been on BT adsl (3-7mb) for years now and never a problem until a few days ago! The connection has pretty much gone dead, cant use wifi as the connection is so weak, stupidly slow download speeds (30kbps) blah blah blah. I posted this image on another forum and was told it looks VERY bad and is probably noise on the line?!

  • My ipad battery drains much faster after iOS 7 upgrade

my ipad battery drains 4x faster after ios7 upgrade.....how do I fix this?

Dig into your settings. iOS7 defaults a lot of stuff on that you may not need. Such as tons of notifications, background app updates, background app refresh. Turn extra stuff off and see if that helps.

  • Could the battery be dead after one year?

Without any warning my one year old Ipad 2 won't power up.  Shouldn't the battery have stopped holding a full charge before that happened?  I have not dropped the iPad or had any accident with it.  So I'm very surprised that it has stopped working.

You know anything is possible right? And not all iPads are capable of living for 2 - 9 years.
Have you tried charging it while starting it?
Have you tried contacting the "Apple"?
Have you tried going to any nearby Apple Store and check if your iPad needs battery replacement?
If all of these suggestions does not work, well it's bad news for you buddy.

  • HP Slatebook x2; Tablet wil not charge, 5sec a battery is shown. After 1 year and 1 month.

    Hi,
I have the HP slatebook x2 10-h0000ed, just 1 year and 1 month.  (bought and used in the Netherlands)
So 1y1m means, no official warrenty anymore, but a warrenty should not be the life expectancy...
My problem, actually none, until this morning, the X2 was totally switched off and could not startup.
After poweron it was just was showing a battery at 10%, the shutted down?
It seem to me that it has drained itself from almost all power (99%?), and then self shutted down.
    Small history of the event;
Yesterday evening I left it at 2x 100% (base+tablet), and disconnected the charger.
The charger led was white (full&ready). So this time I did not leave the charger in the unit, to safe some energy...
While at 2x 100% charged, I powered the unit completely down. Afterwhich I closed the the tablet+base.
Now, this morning the unit did not wake. Normally press the powerbutton for 3-5 seconds or so.
The only thing I saw was a white battery with 10% red level on the black background.
Then after 5 second or so it switched back off by itself.
    No fix until so far.
    This I tried;
     - Disconnected the tablet, and charged only the base. After 1-2 hours? the orange charger led went white. (full)
     - Placed the tablet back onto the base, power on. no succes, same battery screen, and back auto off in 5 seconds.
     - Disconnected the tablet, and tried to charge only the tablet. After 1-2 hour no succes.
The whole time the charger led was off. Not orange. Not white. Only off. And not charged anyting.
     - While disconnected to the base but connected to the charger, I pressed the power.
The same thing happened, but with a twist..
Same battery screen, and back auto off in 5 seconds.
But when the screen + battery image was on, the charger was orange also. But only for thet 5 seconds moment.
This is a mini charging moment ??? And gave me the following idea...
     - So I pressed and pressed and pressed the power button for atleast 1 hour uninterrupted, with many pop-ups of
the battery screen. And many temporarily orange charger leds.
With my hope that many times a little charge would revive the poor I-dont-wanne-charge condition.
       But no ,also no success.
Power on is still the same battery screen, and back auto off in 5 seconds.
    - Placed the none-charged tablet back onto the base.
Power on is still the same battery screen, and back auto off in 5 seconds.
    So I read and browsed;
     - Many complaints about HP and the battery of this kind of tablet.
The charging sequence problem are in short; Dead on arrival, but most of the time after
changing the tablet at the store it was ok.
So some leaving the factory unchargeable.
     - But mine tablet was now 1y1m still up and running ok !
Until the voltage dropped below voltage-X.
     - And lower then voltage-X means, by product-hardware, of by prodict-software, (I think)
that the charging-process is blocked and/or shutdown because the voltage is too low.
     - In my opinion, when the voltage is too low, it should charge the battery, and not stop and exit and shutdown.
    Future actions;
     - Now it is saterday, so I have to wait until monday, until I can contact HP (at the Netherlands).
     - I will discribe this problem and how this happens.
     - I hope that HP is accommodatin and compliant to me with this problem.
     - As I say in the beginning, a warranty should not be life expectancy of a product.
     - The tablet nor adapter or wires and connectors were mistreated, dropped, bend, scratched, etc. Just normal everyday use.    :-)
     - I hope HP will give more warrenty then the 1year !
Do you have any ideas ?
    I sort of out now.....
    regards,
    Manuel.

Status update;     good..  &  and bad..
    the good..
The tablet (tablet+keyboard, not adapter) was transported to the HP-centre, for repairs.
From the Netherland to Poland, after a about 1 week it was returned.
The transport service arranged by Hp and Ups, was without any problem.
As requested to not-factory-default or erase otherwise, it was returned OK. All accounts where still fully present.
Repaired; As stated on the repair form in Dutch 'voeding bord vervangen'. Meaning 'power bord replaced'.
So I think something like the charge-pcb (inside the tablet?) was replaced.
Tested;   Individual and all joined (tabl+keyb) charging.
While monitoring the power usage with a battery-monitoring-app.
(the 'battery monitor widget', and the system-default widget.  always the same results. !!)
    Results;
     - The normal usage is OK.
     - But charging has some issues, see the bad, below.
Also, the 'UpdateEC' popup re-appeared after the repairs.
    The message;
      UpdateEC
      New EC Firmware found!!
Would you lik to update EC firmware?
(I do not know anymore the the version values from and to..)
    the bad..
Maybe a new problem, starting from day 1 (after receiving it back).
This is still some preliminairy info, because I am still monitoring this.
The possible new problem;   Charging the keyboard-battery !
A strange 'thing' seems to be going on with the keyboard battery.
     - When drained to 1%, it charges in 20 minutes to 100% ??  While the table battery charges in 2 hours (120 mins).
     - When fully at 100%, is drains much faster then the tablet battery.
     - When at 50-90%, or somewhere in the middle, it 'jumps' to 1% ??
I have screenshots of this odd charge/discharge effect.
(screenshots of the 'battery monitor widget'. not the system-default widget, but always  same results.)
I will keep monitoring this, and when the problem is a bit more clear, I will probably make a new support-request.
    Keep you posted!
    regards,
    Manuel.

  • 3rd generation iPod nano-why is it restarting on it's own and thinking it's battery is almost dead after I just charged it??

2 years ago, when I got my iPod nano, everything was fine. I never really dropped it, and when I did, it was short distances on the carpet in it's case. In the past few months, my iPod nano has been acting funny. From almost dying after I charged it the whole night or re-starting itself on it's own. Any suggestions on how to fix it, or is it time to trash it?

As for the almost dying problem, this is usually a good indication of a dying battery especially given the age of the iPod.  If you want to continue to use your iPod fully, you'll want to have the battery replaced on it.

  • Since upgrading to 8.1 not connecting to WiFi and battery is going dead after 2-3 hours

Unfortunately, like most people I upgraded my iPhone 5 to the IOS 8.1.  Now I cannot connect to WIFI and my battery is draining after 2 - 3 hours.  I have deleted most of my apps but still no luck.  What a disaster.  Samsung is looking better and better, can anyone help before I take drastic measures and trade this phone in.

okay i managed to fix the issue with the graphics on archeage, everything no longer appears multiplied in different colors.
but i am still having the pixle issue.
But now i have also discovered a new problem and thought it wouldn't hurt to post it here also.
My mouse has become supper sensitive when playing my games, one little touch when trying to rotate the screen sends it into a frenzy and i end up looking at the sky or my characters feet. i didn't notice this before as i didn't even attempt to move with
the multiple color images everywhere. Also when holding down my screen rotation button it continues to rotate in that direction even though i am no longer moving the mouse that way.
I did notice that there was a patch for mouse issues so i tried to install it but it said i didn't have the requirements for it, so i assume it was included with the 8.1 update.
I have tried adjusting the settings in the games for mouse sensitivity, and it does not effect it, i even tried to adjust the computers but could not find the setting for what i was after. The mouse rotation button is holding the left or right mouse button
down and moving the cursor in the direction you want it to move. i couldn't see anything there that can help with that as the cursor speed is fine, its only happens when i try to rotate the screen.
Any help on this and my pixle issue would be greatly appreciated!

  • What are my options considering my phone is pretty much dead?

So today I was carrying my MacBook and my iPhone through my bathroom while txting at the same time. A little slip of the hand and next thing I know my iPhone is in the toilette and I am scrambling to get it out. A few hours later and my phone has gone from originally just not having sound coming from the external speakers to being completely unfunctional. My contract doesn't end until early February, and considering they won't just give me another iPhone 3G, what are my options as far as having to buy a new phone? Would I keep the same contract (I don't want to be locked in for another 2 years with the 3G)? Should I look into going ahead and upgrading to the new iPhone 4? If so, what would I have to pay as far as a termination fee is concerned?
I know its a lot of questions, but any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

My iPhone 3G was "damaged" (result = the wifi stopped working) and out of warranty. When I went to the Apple store, they said they had a "hardware replacement program" and it would cost me 229$. That was only a month ago, so I am waiting to see what happens here(Canada) in terms of the 4. Perhaps, there is something similar in your area.

Does it do anything at all? Try connecting it to the computer. If not, hold down the power and home buttons for 10 sec, let go of the power button and carry on holding the home button for 15 sec. Let go and connect to the computer.

  • Mid-2010 battery dead after 629 cycles?!?

    Hi,
My mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" battery is seemingly dead after only 629 cycles. It says that the condition is "replace now" and the green indicator lights flash when I press the button on the side. It was working fine, and then I didn't use the computer for a little while, and now the battery doesn't charge and it has to be plugged in.
I'm hesitant to think the battery has just failed, because like I mentioned, there are only 629 cycles on it, and it was working prefectly before, and it seems very sudden.
    Any help/thoughts/suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks!

Make an appointment at the genius bar.  Have you fully discharged and recharge fully over the battery's 2 yr life?  This is good to do a few times a year.

  • Mail App dead after Leopard upgrade + 10.5.6 update

Has anyone else ended up with a dead Mail app after upgrading to Leopard and applying the 10.5.6 update? Mail app would appear to launch, but would not run or quit. Reinstalling the 10.5.6 combo update didn't help. I had to reinstall Leopard from scratch to fix the problem. Needless to say, I updated to 10.5.5 the second time and everything works fine. But it appears that 10.5.6 can lay some nasty surprises on you.

After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard with the default method Mail was the only thing that didn't work. It wouldn't open a Mail window, appeared to be open on the menu bar and in the dock but would not quit from either command. I had to force quit. When I finally got a mail window to appear, all my email profiles and folders appeared in the left hand bar, but nary an email to be seen in any location. I could not send or receive emails. Pretty much dead!
I didn't have a meltdown because I'd archived my most important emails that were in my folders. I dug through dozens of posts on multiple forums and tried a procedure I could see was making it worse. I shut down the computer so I could get help from AppleCare this morning.
I got in trouble following the less than adequate instructions from The AppleBlog; inadequate because it didn't say where to move the folders and plist to. My most helpful Apple Tech advised me that I needed to QUIT Mail before dragging ONLY the ~Library>Preferences>com.apple.mail.plist file to my desktop. The two folders need to stay in the Library.
After you are out of Mail, on the desktop click on the plist to highlight it. Use Control-click to display the popup menu and select Copy for the plist. Open finder window and select ONLY Preferences (~Library>Preferences) so the word Preferences is highlighted. Go to the Finder>Edit>Paste drop down menu of the toolbar. Select Paste. It will ask if you want to replace the newly created plist with the one you just copied. Select replace. Relaunch Mail and that should restore all your Mail Profiles and retrieve your messages.
This process even brought back my mail folders and put all my saved messages back where they were filed. I didn't have to get into my archived messages file after all.
I just wish I could have found this simpler fix online without spending hours searching and reading conflicting suggestions. Maybe this will help someone else fix their problem faster.

  • Zen Nano PLus dead after firmware upd

I wanted to update the firmware of my Zen Nano PLus, so I got the correct file off the creative site. I connected my mp3-player and executed the firmware update file. Everything went as it should do. It brought up a pop-up window of windows asking to search for new Hardware. I accidently closed it. Then the whole firmware updating process stopped. I closed the window of the updating process and tried to restart the firmware update file. I didn't work because the player wasn't even found by the computer. The bad thing about it is, that I cant do anything with my player since the computer cant even talk to it. I cant turn my player on/off: it is pretty much dead. No connection to computer status diagram appears, nothing. I tried the rescue tool of creti've, it didn't find the player either.
    Any Ideas what can help?

    ~PROBLEM SOLVED~
removed battery, pressed Start, connected USB, found as damaged, firmware update, works fine!!!

  • Z61t Battery is dead after 1 1/2 year

Hi guys, is any of you have problem with Z61t battery being dead after 1.5 year? At 1 year mark, my extended battery only lasted 1 hr of use instead of 3 hrs when I first bought it. Now it totally dead, so when I unplug the AC adapter, it shut off.  This already happened to my friend with the same model.  I didn't pay attention when he told me until now.  I couldn't believe this is happening b/c two of my previous laptops(different brands) were working fine.  I sure won't buy another lenovo product again in the future.  This is so disappointing.....

Welcome to the wonderful world of these sub par batteries now.
I have a T61 that is slightly more that a year old, and the battery is rated as Fair (can only hold 78% of it's original charge) - with only 3 cycles.
Very dissapointing considering my T41's battery is more that 3 years old and is rated as good and can hold 105% of it's original charge - go figure.
However, what seems to be key here is what power supply you use. If you use the wrong one, your battery life will be compromised.
Go to eBay and buy another genuine battery, but make sure the cycle count is low and make sure you are using the correct power supply.
Presently with an X201 and a T500/T410 combo
I've owned everything from a 701c up to present which equal a ton of ThinkPads
