Battery problem & Safe mode

hey guys. i don't know is this really a big issue or not..but when i turned on my MacBook pro early 2011, it runs in kinda safe mode for the first time!!.. i don't know why?!   MBP battery was fully charged..now, after 30 minutes.. I am using just safari with DSL modem connected..its now 88%..my display and keyboard light is as low as possible. i have this MBP for almost a year and battery cycle is 144..which i think it's great!
so, my question, is it normal? and what was that safe mode?!

> Disappointingly there was no paperwork with the returned item to advised what work had been carried out, ie replacement of hardware, drive or software or advising how to open an account.
So why you dont get in contact with the ASP who repaired the notebook and why you dont ask what has been done? Only these guys can provide more details
> When it was returned the operating system was reconfigured so that I could not open it as administrator, had to open new user account. According to Technical Support, the factory use a different recovery disc! I asked if I should use my recovery discs again, but was told it was not necessary. However, now that I have spent several hours downloading folders and installing various programs, I find that Windows 7 is working differently. In particular, no thumbnail pictures are appearing in various picture files, only the picture icon. Same with preview pane, only an icon appears. Any advice, would be welcome.
Of course you can use the own recovery disk and could reinstall the OS again.
But I think its just an matter of Win 7 configuration;

  • P55-GD65 problem safe mode and STORAGE drivers Win8

In windwos 7 everything worked fine. In Win 8.0 I can't enter SAFE MODE, just black screen, and NumLock is flashing every 3 seconds (from on to off and back to on). Even I press Caps lock, after 3 seconds it turned off and Num is ON again (and again loop just with NumLock).
Second problem is wrong displayed disk drive names in DEVICE MANAGER as seen on image down
Is that maybe a problem with this driver, so SAFE MODE is also NOT working?
    Procesor is i7-860
    GPU is 560TI  MSI OC
    8GB RAM
    latest BIOS

In Normal MODE Windows is working fine

Thanks for replies. I finally managed to fix "WRONG NAMES" with latest INTEL Rapid Storage drivers, so disk names are now fine.
Still, problem is entering SAFE MODE.
I try same copy of Windows 8 on OLDER Motherboard (mainboard) Asus p35 chipset and it is working fine (also SAFE MODE). Everything was working "out of box", no need for any driver to be installed.
So, my motherboard (p55) 3-4years old with Intel  i7 is for retirement????
Why not build drivers for Win8, like some smaller brands do?

  • Power up in safe mode?

I am unable to power up my laptop.  What is the process for pwering up the computer after removing the battery?

    Safe Mode <---Link
    Resetting SMC  <---Link

  • My Macbook Pro runs VERY slow when unplugged. The battery charges and runs ok. Ran an SMC reset (no success), Safe mode (did not work), and hardware check (came back ok). What can I try next to fix this?

    Hello all,
I am new to posting on this forum but I really hope that someone out there can help me out. I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running OSX 10.6.8. My problem is that when I unplug the laptop form the charger and run it on the battery, the computer becomes unresponsive to any commands at all. It basically really slows down to a crawl. Even when rebooting it will take 5-10 minutes or more to do so. The odd thing is, when it gets plugged back in while any of this is going on, within a minute or two it works perfectly. It has been in a mac authorized repair shop for 7 weeks and has had a new logic board and a new hard drive replaced. The battery was tested and charges fine, holds a charge when unplugged, and the system profile shows the battery at Normal. Recently, many knowledgeable mac enthusiasts gave me tip that might help. Here is what I did: Ran an SMC reboot (no success), rebooted the computer under safe mode then unplugged it to test (no success), and ran a hardware test on the install disk (showed hardware ok)
I am at a loss as to what to do next. It has become impossible to use this laptop for my classes when it is unplugged. I am about ready to just go buy a new one, and call this one a goner.
I am hoping someone reading this can help with any other ideas on its problem. Help? Anyone?
    Steve

    LPBassman,
since the tech in your IT department was able to copy your daughter’s data from her MacBook Pro’s internal disk, I’d suggest completely erasing the internal disk (using Disk Utility in Recovery mode, reformatting it with a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem), reïnstalling its original version of Mac OS X (either Snow Leopard from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD if it originally came with two grey DVDs, or Lion via OS X Internet Recovery if no grey DVDs originally came with it), running Software Update to get it to 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 respectively, reïnstalling Mavericks, running Software Update again to get it up to date, and finally restoring your daughter’s data.

  • Macbook shuts off during start-up - can't get through safe-mode, single user mode (fsck -fy) and target-drive shows no problems when running disk utility repair

    Hi everyone,
I'm simply all out of ideas on what to do - my best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work.
What could be the cause of my issue? The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:
    1 - I tried resetting the PRAM
2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password
3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before
4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected (and it didnt fix my issue)
    5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.
The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it. The problem kinda went away afterwards but it might be related to this?
This is way off my comfort zone of 'diagnosing' issues, so I'm crossing fingers for some good advice.
    Thanks,
    Aske
    Denmark

    I think you're right.
If it's hardware related, is it possible to guess at what it might be? It would be nice to know how much I should expect to pay for a repair before actually getting it fixed.

  • Running in Safe Mode - are there any implications. ( a sub section of Rebooting problem continued...)

As with others I have become frustarted by my 9720 rebooting at random sometimes mid call and often at annoying times. I often have to take out the battery too, otherwise it will not restart. I have wiped, rebooted and even tried the 4hr 15 min trick all to no avail.
I am now running in permanent safe mode - the blackberry works fine and I hope I may have found a solution. Nobody seems 100% sure what the problem is caused by, if I have found a cure I'll be pleased, if however there are issues with running in Safe Mode I would be pleased to know.
I don't want toi change phones but the last few days have been very annoying.
    Rogero

Safe Mode is not intended to be an "answer"...rather, it is a diagnostic tool to try and root out the cause of issues. It's sole intended purpose is to try and determine if any auto-running add-on or 3rd party apps might be causal to a situation, by suppressing the auto-run at boot up of those items. But, it is not intended to be part of any "normal operation" of the device.
If the results of Safe Mode are that the behavior continues, then other diagnostic steps must be conducted to try and determine the proper course of action. Quite often, there never can be any true diagnosis...but, rather, attempting a series of different remedies until the behavior is cured. For example, if OS corruption is the root cause, it can't really be diagnosed (especially at an internet distance)...rather, reloading the OS might cure the corruption and re-establish good operations.
But, reloading the OS might also cure other causes, so truly knowing exactly what the root cause is quite often impossible. And, if the issue is hardware (as with your suspicion of the battery), then no amount of OS or software "fixes" can truly be a remedy at all.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Start up problems - only boots in safe mode

Hey community of amazing computer lovers, to preface my question... my setup is:
    Macbook Pro, mid-2009 15in.
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Recently, after a move to Hawaii my laptop has begun having issues starting up normally. With ample power in the battery, and even when plugged into the wall via (a slightly damaged adapter), the macbook will do a number of abnormal responses to pushing the power button.
    1. The indicator light (small white mini rectangle near front right of base) will blink once when power button is depressed. Nothing else happens. No boot up.
    2. Holding power button down, indicator light will turn on, a boot up screen appears for a moment, then power cuts out and boot up ends.
    3. (When holding the power button down) The indicator light will light up, then flicker and turn off.
    4. (When holding shift for safe mode) System will boot up and has allowed me to work here in Safe mode.
I have restarted the machine while holding command+R, ran disk utility and repaired the disk. This action has not solved issue. Last night I left the computer in sleep mode after doing this, and woke up to a shut down machine with power left in the battery...
What is the issue at hand? Hardware?
How can I take steps to fix it myself?
    Any help much appreciated,
    Parker

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

hello I have imac (27-inch mid 2011) 3.1ghz intel core i5 1tb serial ata hard drive, amd radeon hd 6970m
    my problem is
imac works fine in safe mode,
but when you try to startup normal it's connstantly restart by it self.

in safe mode works perfectly, soon as I try to boot in normal mode it's keep restarting.on screen I don't  see any line vertical or horizontal picture look normal on safe mode.but unable to start normal it just restarting over and over.I try another HDD but same things happen,I replace memory but still same.works ok in safe mode but not in normal mode.I will try to post system error report.

  • Why does my iMac run fine in Safe Mode but has many problems when it isn't?

If you take a look at my previous posts you will see that I have had the usual problems that many, many other iMac G5 1.8 20" Rev A owners have been recently experiencing (Kernel Panics, Screen Blurs, Screen darker at top more than bottom, etc)
I have discovered that the only way to stop all the numerous problems that I have been having is to start the iMac up in Safe Boot Mode
In this mode it has been running Perfect! No Crashes! No Screen Problems! It's been wonderful to get it back to normal after all the peristant problems I have had! The only thing being that you can't use sound in or out or the DVD Player with Safe Mode!
So the question I would like to ask is:
So does this mean that the problems I had before were just Software conflicts/issues and not Hardware ones?
    Cheers for your help
    Bob
    iMac G5 1.8 20" Mac OS X (10.4.3) 2 Gig RAM

When you start up in Safe Mode various things aren't loaded at startup, Bob.
Have a thinbk about which of the following may be involved in your own case:
It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts .
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables any Login Items.
    (from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392)
Have a look at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464 for some more possibilities.
You may find it worth while using System Prefernces/Accounts to creat a new admin user account and see if the problem persists with it. THis may help you narrow down the problem further.

  • As soon as I open Firefox it crashes, even in safe mode. I've tried all the options to fix the problem but to no avail. My crash report number is: 1326236186. I hope this helps!

Firefox crashes as soon as I click on the icon. Even in safe mode. I've tried all options of resolving this problem but nothing is working. I really hate using Safari and Chrome. Please help!

Scan your computer in safe mode for bots, malware, trojan's and viruses. Remove any Found and reboot. If Problem still exists, go to control panel, add/remove programs remove firefox. and then download and reinstall firefox. Remember to always close as many running programs like messangers and widgetts when installing any program. This should fix your problem. only other option is to do a system restore to when you were not having any problems, this works 90% of time.

  • What can I do in Safe Mode to fix boot problem?

MY MBP is giving me the "NOT" sign on start-up. This comes after initially displaying the Apple logo.
This MBP had a new logic board installed by Apple just two weeks ago -- and I know I can take it back but I'd like to fix this myself.
    Here's what's happening.
BTW -- I put in a different hard drive after getting the MBP back. It has worked fine for several days.
Don't know if these points are relevant, but:
    1. First thing I noticed today is that neither of the USB ports would read a flash drive. The port would, however, work mouse and keyboard.
    2. The initial non-boot episode took place when I had external hard drives daisy-chained in via Firewire. But, again, this had worked previously, as recent as this morning.
    This may be significant:
    3. The last tasks performed on the MBP were -- for the first time -- to edit video in FCE, make DVD in iDVD, burn IMG file.
    4. I have connect this MBP as a target FW drive to another MBP and run "disk verify" and "disk repair" in Disk Utility. It says the drive and permissions are okay.
    5. I have booted to a copy of Disk Warrior (latest version, version 4, I believe) and rebuilt directories and files along with verify/repair permissions (everything DW will do). And when re-starting, it still won't boot.
    6. When I boot off Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility…"verify disk" says "the volume appears to be ok"….when I "repair disk" it reports "Volume repair complete." and "Updating boot partitions for the volume as required."
    7. I'm able to boot in SAFE MODE, but when I try to restart in normal mode, it won't boot (so nothing was automatically fixed)
What can I do in safe mode to address my problem?
    Thanks,
    TD

  • ITunes opens only in safe mode; freezes upon normal opening (possible solutions that I found to similar problems don't seem to apply)

Hello. I've encountered a problem with my iTunes that I would like some help on solving. My computer uses Windows Vista. iTunes recently began to freeze as soon as I opened its window. On two occasions, it appeared to work the first time after turning the computer on, but would freeze upon subsequent openings. No error messages are given. It will either freeze while saying "Accessing iTunes Store," or without saying anything at all. However, iTunes appears to work just fine when I open it in safe mode (holding Shift + Ctrl while opening), although I have not yet attempted to sync a device while using safe mode. I attempted to update iTunes to its most recent version (10.6.3.25) after first experiencing this problem. The first time I tried, it didn't work, saying that "errors occured" during the update. I disabled my antivirus software (Kaspersky Antivirus 2012) and tried again. This time, my computer said that the update was successful. However, the freezing problem has persisted.
After looking through Apple support and other discussion topics, I found several things to check for (relating to similar problems) as follows. I checked for them, but they don't seem to apply to my situation. Here is what i found.
    From Apple Support:
Check for third-party plugins in the following two folders:
    -C:\Users\username\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\
Result: I found this folder, but it is empty, even with "Show hidden files and folders" enabled.
    -C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-ins
Results: I did not find a "Plug-ins" folder in this directory, nor in the iTunes directory in Program Files (x86). However, there is a "Mozilla Plugins" folder in the (x86) directory, containing files "npitunes.dll" and "npitunes.xpt."
    From Community Discussions:
-Conflict with Advanced SystemCare security tool by IObit or iCloud Control Panel
Result: These do not appear to be installed on my computer.
I also found something about Bonjour service, and that some people's similar problems were temporarily resolved when disabling Bonjour and reopening iTunes. I tried this, but it did not make a difference.
Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this? Thanks for the help!

No error messages are given. It will either freeze while saying "Accessing iTunes Store," or without saying anything at all.
    I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store

  • When I open Firefox, even in safe mode, it causes my Windows 7 64-bit to totally crash and I get that blue screen of death =(. This has happened suddenly on Nov 16, 2010. I had been running Firefox on Windows 7 64-bit with no problems previously. Help?

I have had Windows 7 64 bit for the past year and have run Firefox with no problem. It was the most problem free of the three browsers including IE and Chrome.
I have a Vista side where I run my online backup and did so yesterday. Went on Firefox. No Problem.
Today I booted into the Windows 7 side. Seemed to boot up okay. Until I opened Firefox. Suddenly, my whole computer crashed, windows shut down and that bluescreen popped up. I restarted normally. Same thing. I restarted in safe-mode. Couldn't find any problems. Went back to regular mode. Started FF. Boom crash.
Back to safe mode. Did a system restore. Back to regular startup. Didn't help. Attempting to open FF crahed windows.
So back to safe mode. Started Firefox. Crashed the whole computer and same blues screen.
So I uninstalled FF. Reinstalled FF. It still makes Windows crash.
So now I am on IE :P

See below -- the way I asked the question the first time may not be clear. This post was a goof but I can't figure out how to delete it

  • My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Please help me, I have a mid 2010 Mac book pro with a toshiba mk3266gsxf harddrive. It started making a clicking noise and then my computer crashed. I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?
