Battery recharge process bugged - 3.1

I'm going to go out on a limb and propose that the recent problems that people have been having with poor battery life since the 3.1 update are caused by a bug in the battery charging management in the phone's firmware which I speculate was changed in 3.1. Furthermore I think this change sits outside of the normal firmware updates as reverting back to 3.0 *DOES NOT* seem to solve the problem.
Here's my reasoning...
- Not everyone's phone gets hot but they still see charge disappearing in what seems to be an accelerated manner.
- I've noticed my iPhone 'recharge' from 37% to 100% in under an hour while plugged into a USB port on my laptop. This seems very fast, most strange is that getting from 90% to 100% doesn't seem to take any longer than from 30% to 40% which hints that trickle isn't working.
- Some users have had luck by 'forcing' a trickle charge to the iphone using inline hardware and are getting proper battery life. Again hinting that trickle charge management may be broken.
- From what I can see the baseband change doesn't seem related. I updated to 3.1 while retaining baseband 04.26.08 and downgraded back to 3.0.0 and still see the battery problem.
- Turning on and off various features seems to have very mixed results for different people. While disabling features that use power can obviously help battery life, I don't believe this issue is caused by push, wifi, bluetooth etc.
People are focused on the idea the battery is being drained, I propose that the battery is in fact only being partially charged before reporting 100% and ceasing the charging process. This gives the illusion of fast battery draining.
Your thoughts?????

Mine is 2 weeks old and gets 3 if I'm lucky. If I use the DVD player I get even worse. Better than my last iBook, but not much. I called Apple and was told that is normal. The ads that say up to 6 hours are if you charge it fully then don't use it. Sounds odd, I know. Look under the Apple in the top left corner.About this Mac. More info. Look under Power. What is your full charge capacity? Should be close to 4400.

That's not a battery recharge sign. It's telling you your phone is in recovery mode and you need to plug it into your computer running iTunes.

  • HT1338 How do I turn of battery recharge when on  a plane (Macbook Pro Retina)?

    Hi,
I would like to know how to turn off battery recharge when on a plane.
Every time I plug it in, the power goes down because recharging the battery consumes too much power for the outlet on the Boeing 747.
Previously I would just take the battery out of my laptop. Obvioulsy that is not possible anymore on a MacBook Pro!
    Thanks
    Christoph

I agree it's an interesting problem, but I believe it is technically possible. The man page for 'pmset' has this tantalasing clue:
Certain Apple battery calibration tools may temporarily disable battery charging, even though your Apple portable is plugged into AC power. Such tools will never surprise you with this behavior; you will know it's happening. This state will be reflected in an additional line of output to 'batt' or 'ps' readings, including the pid of the app inducing this behavior.
             'ChargeInhibit':    1432
Changing the power assertion of 'ChargeInhibit' from 0 to 1 can therefore be done programmatically. However, no Terminal or AppleScript tricks are going to work for this one  - it loooks like it's something that needs to be written in Cocoa.
That leads to two suggestions, both of them a bit woolly I'm afraid:
    1. Try asking over on the Apple Developers forum (where the cocoa programmers hang out)
    2. Try searching for one of those 'battery calibration tools' mentioned above, or a 3rd party battery management app. I did try a couple of searches, but didn't turn up anything promising. Maybe you'll have better luck.

  • Battery recharger for mac book?

Is there a battery recharger for Mac Book out side of charging it in the MB via the computer power adapter? My adapter and computer power plug are shot. It will cost a lot to fix. If I am able to recharge the battery I could make use of my MB by getting power from the batties.

  • HP Compaq 6510b (stand-alone)battery-recharger

    Hey hey folks.
I was wondering if there's a so called stand-alone battery recharger for the notebook HP Compaq 6510b?
By stand-alone, I mean a charger, that has an adapter to charge a battery that is not connected to the notebook.
I saw those charging bays, but I suppose those are pretty much meant for office use and are therefore quite expensive for personal use.
I tried to look online for those, found one, but the supported models list did not feature my laptop.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Source for battery drainage: serious bug discovered

    Dear all,
Can you all try the following? I have found a very strange bug draining my MBP's battery significantly.
    - Make sure you have not started Apple Mail during your current session; restart your Mac in case you have started it any time after your last reboot.
    - Make sure no bakground processes are running which could eat up CPU cycles.
    - Download and run CoreDuoTemp (0.8) and have a look at the CPU usage in idle state (usually < 3%).
    - Disconnect your AC charger and have a look at the time left for running on battery (mine is about 2h30, battery close to fully recharged)
    - Now start Apple Mail and have a look at the CPU usage in CoreDuoTemp. It immediately goes up to above 50% and stays there, even if Mail is quitted immediately. The CPU usage will never drop below 50% unless you restart. Processor temperature equally rises to 79°C and above, while being <65°C before.
    - Strange thing is: Activity monitor does not report any significant processor usage (< 5%), thus contradicting what CoreDuoTemp says.
    - You'd suspect a bug in CoreDuoTemp -- which on itself is not unlikely, given that it's relying on very new and experimental (kernel?) drivers. However, have a look at the time left with your battery: mine dropped immediately back to 1h30 (1h less than a couple of seconds ago), only due to starting Mail.
Huh? What is going on? What does CoreDuoTemp detect that Activity Monitor cannot see? I suspect CoreDuoTemp being correct, because the battery time left indication also dropped significantly (indicating that something is eating the CPU).
Could this explain why some people indicate terrible battery lengths of 2h and less? I know not all people use Apple Mail, so this might explain it...
Please note that I have installed all updates, except for the Keyboard update (because this would result in the Mirror widget trick not working anymore).<br>
    MBP 2.0 / 2 Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes I did. I've got menumeters running as well. No inconsistencies.
Btw, that speedit kext CoreDuoTemp uses has got nothing to do with CPU-load reporting. It only reads the Core Duo's thermal sensor. I always assumed Activity Monitor, CoreDuoTemp, MenuMeters etc. get their CPU-load information from the same source top gets it.
When you say top behaves the same, you mean that CoreDuoTemp reports significant CPU usage, and top doesn't? To see all running processes you have to run the terminal window full screen. Total CPU usage (well, idle) is reported in the top right corner. Forgive me if you already know all this, but it sounds a little strange to me. You should be able to see any and all processes in top.

  • Lumia 610 battery recharge cycle

    Hello,
I have recently bought a 610 handset and I wanted to ask the fellow users how much battery life they are getting. I usually have to recharge it fully once a day, I make like 4-5 phone calls and access internet over wifi (say 3-4 hours). I don't play any songs / videos etc. I have turned of bluetooth and battery saver mode is on. Also I have set brightness to LOW.
What is your experience with this handset?

    Hi wplumia610,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the forums!
When you are using applications or features that require a lot of processing power, such as gaming and internet sharing, the handset is bound to get heated up. This is perfectly normal and the phone will cool down after the processor intensive task is over.
The battery life will be strongly affected by the applications you use, run in the background (live tiles etc.) and the services you have on. In order to increase your battery life, we would advise you to turn off location services when not needed, along with bluetooth and wlan.
To see the official stand-by and talk times, please see here.
However, if you feel that your phone heats up excessively and the battery life is less than you would expect even on low use, we would advise you to visit your local Nokia Care Point and let them have a look.
    Hope this helps,
    Puigchild

  • Automatic Row Processing BUG?

Unfortunately it turns out that one can not create report with form through the wizard if the target table has a primary key that should be updatable. Is that true?
I have a table with only 2 columns 1-code of some type, 2-description. Column 1 is primary key.
I get the following error when I try to change tha value of column 1:
    ORA-20001: Error in DML: p_rowid=ass, p_alt_rowid=CURRENCYCODE, p_rowid2=, p_alt_rowid2=. ORA-01403: no data found
I searched through the forum but noone explained why this happens. And the only thing that I think is the reason for this is that Automatic Row Processing does not remember the previous value of the primary key column so its embedded SET statement only has the new value.
    Is this a bug?
I don't want to create different processes to update, delete, create. This however involves using temp hidden field to hold the original value of my first column.
Would You fix this to be done automatically in HTMLDB when using the wizard with Automatic Row Processing?
    My version is: 1.6.0.00.87
    Thanks

Well, actually the wizard succeded but it did not do what I needed: my table is with one column (primary key) and another column (varchar). The wizard asked me for my primary key column and I pointed it, but after it secceeded and I ran the form, the field was hidden. But I wanted it to be avalable for entering/editing so I changed it to a text box type. Does that help?
And another thing what happens if I use the wizzard on a table with to columns which define a composite primary key. when i point them on the relevant page, the next page of the wizzard asks me to choose columns, but there aren't any more because it appears to hide my primary key fields. In this case i really can not use the usard for helping me with automatic processing. This and the previous case I believe are if not bugs then at least "lacks" of the wizzard.

  • Kernel Panic at low battery with MacBook bug found - with solution

    Hello All,
I think I've found a bug with Leopard concerning laptops. I started a thread which I'll link to below.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1219413
Other people have had this same issue - I've seen it on a few different posts. Does anyone know the best way to contact Apple regarding this? I don't know how active they are in reading this forum, and I want to make sure they know about this, as it's probably something that can be fixed with an OS update.
To summarize, I'm including a couple of key posts:
    Posted Nov 4th 2007...
    Hello,
I just got one of the new November 07 MacBooks. The machine is great, and screams with the pre-installed Leopard.
First thing I did was plug it in to charge as I started configuring software. Once it was fully charged, I pulled the plug, and began using it on battery. My plan was to calibrate the battery, by running it all the way until it forced a sleep, then shutting down and plugging it in again, as Apple recommends.
Problem is, I never got the "Low Battery" warning, or even the sleep warning. At around 10 minutes of power left, I simply got a kernel panic. A few seconds later, the laptop just switched off.
I plugged in again for a few minutes, then ran it down again to see if I could reproduce the error, and I did get the low battery warning.
The next time the battery ran down, it gave me the kernel panic.
Is this happening to anyone else? Is it a new MacBook problem, or a leopard power management problem? I'm having no other issues at all with the MacBook or Leopard. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Nov 12th, 2007...
Well, It's been a few cycles since the first one, and all is well. I'm getting the low battery warning when it runs low, and no kernel panics (knocking on all available wood). If I start having problems in the future, I'll update this thread, but for now I'm marking it answered. It was probably Leopard not reading the uncalibrated battery correctly.
    Dec, 31st 2007.....
    Hello all,
Short followup here: I've have 30 successful cycles after the first couple of kernel panics, and it's time to calibrate the battery again. I tried to do it yesterday - charged the battery all the way, used the macbook while plugged in for two hours, unplugged the adapter and continued to use it until I got the low battery warning. I shut down everything and let it sit - waiting for it to go to sleep. Instead, I got a kernel panic, and the computer shut down. It would not restart until I plugged it in, but I know there was some battery left, since it panicked at 2% battery. I let it charge for an hour or so, then used it again until I got the low battery warning. This time, it went down to 0%, but panicked and shut down instead of going to sleep.
I'm trying this again, after charging all the way last night, and just leaving it on to drain. I'm at 20% right now, and I'll post to let you know what happened.
    Dec 31st, 2007....
Hello All - I think I've figured this out. Looks like a software bug with Leopard.
I did get another kernel panic just now at 0%, after the low battery warning. But then I had a revelation. In trying to calibrate the battery, I had set my energy saver settings to never sleep under the battery settings - so I could leave the notebook overnight to drain. I gave it a bit of a charge, then set the battery setting (in energy saver) to sleep after 20 minutes. I restarted, used the computer for a while, got the low battery warning, the computer went down to 0%, then went to sleep as it should.
I believe that since I had the computer set to "never" go to sleep, Leopard didn't know how to handle it when the battery ran down, and kernel panicked. Perhaps this happens on new MacBooks, because these settings aren't written yet? Regardless, it's obviously an OS level bug here.
For those having the problem, make sure your battery settings under energy saver are set to allow sleep after a time.

  • White screen after every battery recharge

For the past couple of weeks, every time I recharge my battery, the next time I turn on my Zen, I get a white screen. I have used different computers and used "safely remove hardware" and the result
    Is always the same.
My firmware is up to date. I have to do a clean up and reboot each time.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

UPDATE: I found a much better solution to my white-screen problems. It's easy to correct (until powering off-and-on again) using the Hold/Power switch, and the Play/Pause button. However, it appears that you must first be able to get music playing. This is how it works:
    . Fully charge the unit.
    2. Get a song to play.
    3. Lock the device by moving the Hold/Power switch up.
    4. Wait for the screen to blank to black, and then also wait about an ADDITIONAL 25 seconds after the screen blanks.
    5. While holding the Play/Pause button down, move the Hold/Power switch out of the lock-mode, and all the way down (like you're turning it off).
    6. Release the Play/Pause button.
This always restores my screen until I power the Zen off-and-on again. This white-screen-problem only began after updating the firmware from .2.0 to .2.03. I have requested Creative to provide me a file to restore my firmware to .2.0 (which did not have this white-screen-problem). You can see a demonstration of this method of fixing some white-screen-problems at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8g0sh7pc54

  • Battery level software bug

All of a sudden the battery level of my iPhone 5 started to go down from %100 to 30, 20, 10 then 1% in less that a minute and then shuts down!! This happens sometimes after just a few minutes of unplugging the phone from the charger. This problem appeared only two weeks ago so I spent sometime searching for a solution or similar stories, and am certain that the battery charge level calibration in the new iPhone software has a bug in it..!! I am sure the capacity of the battery is fine, its just the charge level drops for some reason and the phone shuts down immediately though the battery is still full because when I plug it to the charger it takes a minute then it turns on showing 100% charge !!

As an update, I restored my iPhone to the factory settings but unfortunately it didn't work. I don't think I will take the phone to any Apple shop because there is no one in my city and the closest is around 40 miles away! Also my phone is just less than 1.5 years old so the timing for getting a fault was just perfect after the end of the warranty, so I guess I better fix it myself (most likely change the battery first).

  • Fans Blasts 6000rpm For An Hour During Battery Recharge!

When I first explained to AppleCare that my fans started blasting 6000rpms while charging the battery they said this was usual as charging the battery would heat up the system.
When I explained that the fans blast for over an hour while it recharged I was told that was unusual.
When I start recharging the battery the temps might start at around 140F CPU A and after an hour on blasting fans the temps go down pretty quickly (120F) but keep blasting!
I could send the thing in but everytime it gets returned the problem is still there and more have developed while in depot. This has happened three times in the last two months.
I have the 3 year plan and rarely use off battery so wont have the fans blasting much.
Should I just live with it since it isnt the biggest problem or send it in for a look see? I live pretty far from any Apple source so mail in is only choice...
    thanks for any suggestions,
    frank

Mine rev for a few minutes when I first plug the charger in. Battery is nearly dead at this point. Mine's done this since new.
Currently I have 315 battery load cycles with 80% battery capacity left. My unit will be a year old next month.

  • IOS5.1 on iPhone 4 Battery recharging only partially

With iOS5.1 on iPhone 4 I'm now and then experiencing only partial recharging of the battery overnight. Anyone else having this problem?

Let your battery run completely dry till your phone turns off itself (recaliberation of the battery). Recharge the phone then using a wall charger for over 2.5 hours or till completely charged.
