Battery/recharging problem with iBook

I've had a bunch of problems in the last 2 months with my iBook not charging, or running down the battery even when plugged in. I need advice on the next step to take in diagnosing the problem.
(1) About 2 months ago, while connected using the Apple adapter, I noticed the green ring on the power cord had turned yellow some minutes (hours?) before. Before I knew it, the machine was threatening to shut down due to low battery. Since it had been plugged in all this time, I jiggled the cord at the point where the thin white cord enters the white brick and it suddenly started charging again. I concluded that I might need a new adapter.
(2) But I postponed buying one until a similar event happened again. I forget the details, but the event motivated me to buy a new 3rd-party adapter which seemed to work fine. Of course, ever since the first incident I ALWAYS used the iBook with it plugged into the wall. My two batteries were 3 or 5 years old, and I doubted they had much juice left.
(3) Two weeks ago I had the machine give me the low power warning in the middle of a lecture, then turned itself completely off... even though (as noted) it was plugged into a verifiably active wall outlet, using the new adapter. This was extremely embarrassing. Pressing the reset button and praying finally seemed to bring it back to life (with a bad date). Without realizing it, I think I actually reset the Power Manager.
(4) I read up on the problem and decided that I probably needed a new Power In board. I bought one online -- and installed it myself in a 5-hour marathon last Sunday (the day before yesterday).
(5) Monday I was doing some work on it and the problem recurred. I tried running it with no battery (but plugged in); no dice. I tried resetting the Power Manager (which I know how to do now); no dice. I noticed that my installed battery was the 5-year-old original Apple battery. I dug around and found my 3-year-old BTI battery and put it in. Everything seemed fine! This BTI battery charged up with no problem. Or so I thought.
(6) Everything seemed peachy, too, during my lecture this morning (Tuesday) using the BTI battery (which was charging itself fully with 4 green LEDs) even though it was a bit old. Again, I ALWAYS used it plugged into the wall.
(7) But during my evening lecture I noticed, once again, that it was not charging the battery. I put it into sleep mode and then tried running it with no battery at all. No dice. Eventually I reset the Power Manager one more time and it started recharging.
Questions:
(A) What the heck is wrong with my iBook? I replaced the power adapter. I replaced the Power-In board. I reset the Power Manager several times. I replaced an ancient (unchargeable) battery with an old (chargeable) one.
(B) Is the iBook designed (as I have read in a couple of places) to run with no battery (if plugged into the wall outlet)?
(C) Will buying a new battery fix the problem? I assume the answer is no, if the problem is with the charging circuitry. I assume the answer is yes, if a low or old battery can confuse the power management circuitry. I just don't want to shell out well over a hundred bucks to discover that the problem remains.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, James.
Yes, the iBook should run even with no battery installed.
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
(1) there is something wrong with your battery
(2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
(3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
(4) there is something wrong with your logic board
Since you have eliminated all the possibilities except (4), it is likely that your logic board is having problems. The PMU (Power Management Unit) is part of the logic board, and it may be going out (hence, temporarily working again when you reset it). Since the iBook is not running reliably without the battery in place (as it should), replacing the battery most likely would be futile.
When a computer gets to be five years old, it seems a bit short-sighted to pay very much for repairs, just to have something else go wrong sooner rather than later. Have you had a look at the hugely improved specs on the new MacBooks? Is it time for a new portable to avoid embarrassment during your presentations? It sounds like that could be your best option.

  • Problem with iBooks app on iPhone

Having a major problem with iBooks app. Can only get free classic books but nothign contemporary. Cannot update the app either. Works perfectly on my ipad! Should I delete the app and reload? Will I losse all the books I already have??

It is true that all purchases should share a single Apple ID. It is also true that both iOS and OS X allow only one iCloud account per user. And it is true than every Apple ID has an iCloud account, and every iCloud account an Apple ID [1]. Most unfortunately, it is also true that many (most?) Apple customers have multiple Apple IDs (even if they don't know it - I have 4 [2]).
So far, so simple. Here is the catch. On both iOS and OS X the Apple ID for purchases need not match the Apple ID for account-specific iCloud services. Life is much nicer if they do match, but they don't have to. Part of the bug I ran into was related to a configuration error, probably arising during Mavericks install over Mountain Lion, that gave iBooks my user account's iCloud services Apple ID rather than the iOS/iTunes store Apple ID.
Apple's identity management is a mess of almost unfathomable proportion -- the sort of mess that every smart exec runs from. I'm certain it's gummed up by contracts with rights holders, disparate internal systems, unfortunate choices and a nest of secondary assumptions. It would take a will of iron and a lot of cleverness to solve. I'm curious whether Tim Cook will force the fix.
[1] Curiously, however, an iCloud account does not need to have an email address, and the iCloud account email address need not match the associated Apple ID. This is yet another unfortunate edge case of the Apple ID mess.

  • Problem with iBook G3....

I just ordered this computer off of eBay and I seem to be having troubles already.
When I start up the computer the options bar at the top does not appear and it continuously loads, but nothing happens. I am also having a problem with the keyboard not working. If anybody has any suggestions, that would be great. Thanks.

Just to add my two cents in here. Believe it or not, the battery could be the culprit in this case. I had a friend who has an iBook G3 900 Mhz and apparently his battery fell under the extension program to be replaced. He did have issues with the battery which is when he asked me what to do. He said that it was like it had a bug in it. His system was running 10.3 at the time, not sure what version though. The menu bar probably is not showing up due to a corrupt menu icon in core services. Even though it seems silly for such a thing to occur, it can happen. One time I had an issue with my menu bar, but it eventually came up. Turns out that my backup battery I have had a software glitch with 10.5, so I needed to download a patch update. I did that and the menu bar is flawless now. It had an icon that told me the percentage of battery level left. Anyway, it is possible and I am not sure how to solve this, but you may want to take it in to an Apple Store to have the battery checked out. If you do find the CDs, I recommend performing system maintenance first and then taking further action. Best of luck.

  • MacBook Battery Charge Problem - With a Twist

I got a white MacBook in October to replace an ailing iBook. It ran fine for almost five months, with a slight twist that I've been reticent to come on here and ask about.
Problem #1: The battery charging had what I'd call frustrating behavior. The computer would not charge the battery unless I practically ran the battery down to nothing. Usually it wouldn't start charging until 20-30% charge. My old iBook would start charging at about 85%, so I just figured it was some failsafe that Apple was building in to the new system to improve long-term battery life. This frustration continued until today when...
Problem #2: I went to a coffee shop to do some work. I'd forgotten the night before that I hadn't let my battery run down enough to charge it, so the battery was at 35%. Okfine. I'll run it for a few minutes and then plug it in. I wait. 30%, 25%, 20% and whenever I plug it in to test, it won't charge. I run it all the way down to the point where the system automatically goes to sleep. The battery won't charge. I've reset all the things that can be reset, I've reseated the battery, I've turned it off and back on, I let it sleep for an extra amount of time to squeeze that extra bit out of the battery. No beans. The thing refuses to charge.
In system info, the battery information shows that it's completely dead (remaining power at zero across the board, not the negative numbers I've seen reported in other threads). The power information recognizes that it's a battery with 0% charge, but only says "Calculating until full..." Given that it won't charge, it's going to be calculating for a very long time. The battery flashes one light when I press the button.
I'm going to take it in to an authorized service whatsit on Monday, but in the meantime, what is it likely to be? I've seen answers ranging from bad battery to faulty motherboard. Is there any step I've overlooked to try before resorting to a trip to the store?
    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, if it says your battery is only at 18% of it's charge after just a few months, then there is definitely something wrong with it. They will probably give you a replacement battery, considering it is still under warranty. My iBook (2 Years Old) is down to 29% of it's original charge capacity, so I am in need of a new one myself :\
2 Years is what Apple says is the average life span of a laptop battery.

  • IPhone 4S sudden battery life problem with iOS7

I've been hearing the rumors of iOS7 battery life problems but not experiencing them ... until today.
The battery seems to lose about 20% every hour without my really using the phone at all. No calls. No Safari. No Calendar. No email.
I stopped all applications. Still drained.
    Recharged.
I turned on airplane mode.  Still drained.
    Recharged.
I turned off application background updates. Still drained.
I am recharging now. And I have turned off location services.
Not sure what changed. In the last day I did upgrade my computer to a brand new Mac Book Pro.  Could syncing with my new computer have changed something on the phone that would have initiated this.
I installed iOS7 on the release day and haven't had this problem until today.
    Any other tips?
    -Steve

Curiously enough, the problem is gone today.
Didn't change anything that I know of.
    Turned background updating on.
    Turned location services on.
Battery life seems to be holding in a "normal" way.
    Baffled.

  • Problem with iBook app

I keep getting kicked out of iBooks. When will it be fixed? Is this a problem with the app or is something wrong with my iPad?

When asking a question like this it is really important that you tell people what version of iOS and what version of iBooks you are talking about.

  • Problem with iBook powering on... Need help diagnosing please

    Hello,
So for awhile my iBook G3 (dual USB, 700 mhz, 12" display) when the power is pressed the computer chimes and the hard drive will start spinning and then nothing happens. After a few seconds I can hear the drive stop spinning and the only sign of power is that the keyboard will light at the caps lock key.
I tried doing a PMU/PRAM reset and the iBook did a long beep noise, then the hardrive started spinning, then power light started flickering, and than it chimed and that's it.
Not sure what to do with it. I love this computer, and all though it's older and well out of date, it's ultra compact and worked great for wireless internet surfing when away from home. I'd appreciate any help to help figure out what this problem is and if it's worth paying to get it fixed or to replace it.
    Thanks for reading,
    Matt

First, check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up to see if something there helps.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar and it is not past the three-year time limit, give Apple a call.
You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box at the bottom of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."
If it is past the three-year time limit (and it probably is), you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
If you can't manage to get it fixed free or on your own with the shim fix, I almost think it's a better idea to put the money you would spend on a repair toward a new MacBook. They are such a spectacular upgrade over the iBook G3. Hard drive specs, USB 2.0, RAM, processor, Tiger, the newest version of iLife, built-in AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth capabilities, and built-in iSight camera. If you can afford it, that may be the way to go. With a new MacBook, you have the option of using Migration Assistant to transfer your data to the new computer, but that likely won't work if you can't get the iBook to start up at all. However, with a new Mac, you may be able to retrieve some of your data using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • Problem with ibook g3 OS9 showing in a small 640x480 window

Using a quantity of G3 ibooks in a school with OS9, the problem of a small OS9 window drove me crazy until, out of frustration, I tried installing an OS9 eMac disc, and the problem was solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there are a few eMac OS9 installer discs available on ebay. Hope this works for others...

The best bet is to use the discs that originally came with the exact iBook model you're using.
I got this same problem when I installed a version of Mac OS 9 that came with an iMac G3 350 MHz on my iMac G3 500 MHz.

  • Problem with iBook Airport

I recently received an iBook version 10.4.11. The airport and wifi was working fine at first but after around 2 hours the airport stopped working for no particular reason. The computer recognizes that the airport is connected but the airport doesn't recognize any networks. It looks like the airport card is installed correctly but I am not completely sure. I'm beginning to think I may need a new airport card but I'm honestly don't know. If anyone could help me with this problem I would really appreciate it.

First, try completely shutting down the computer, then rebooting. This clears the caches, and most times will restore the functionality of  your AE card. If that does not work you can shut down the wireless base station, disconnect the power, then reconnect and restart. Your third option would be to remove the Airport Extreme card, clean the contacts with a soft lint-free cloth, then replace and be sure it is securely seated.

  • Problem with ibooks

I just bought a book called "everything french" which is supposed to be a basic guide to pronouncing, writing and speaking french. However, there is no way to figure out how to pronounce anything in the book because there is no sound in the book. There is a CD icon and everytime I click on it there is no sound. My Ipad sound is turned all the way up and I've tried with and without headphones but still no sound. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

The info about this book in ibooks says that it does not currently include a CD.

  • Problems with iBook, urgent help required...

Hi, a few months ago, i went to the power settings and checked the option for shut-down at midnight and power on at 6am... Then just last week, i unchecked the option for the automatic on/off... But since then, my iBook still does its' routine... BTW, i made sure that the option is unchecked every night as i leave my com on throughout the night ti download stuff, but it still does what i programmed it to do months ago, even after i readjusted the settings...
I have tried resetting the PMU, but to no avail...
    AND...
Whenever i log in to MSN, the display picture will be the picture from my User Account on my iBook... I have changed it serveral times to my desired picture but when i log in again the next day, the picture is still the one from my administrator account... And also, every time i close my conversation windows, the application will ask me whether to save my conversations even though i have alsready selected automatically save all conversation... The last problem is very often with no apparent reason, the application logs out on it's own, sometimes in the middle of a conversation...So what is wrong with my MSN and what should i do about it...?

    Hi Linuxuser,
I also would suggest not using MSN. I find it to be a pain, and you have more capabilities with other programs. I really like using iChat. I love the Mac feel of iChat so I configured iChat to work with MSN through Jabber. The link below might help if you are interested:

To have iChat work with other programs like Jabber, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo, you can use a similar technique. Here is one way of doing it:
