Battery Service

On my Macbook Pro 13in it says "service battery"
Should I take that into heavy consideration and go have it serviced or does it not matter and I shouldnt worry about it for a while?
Thanks,
G

Also take into account the warranty status. If it's still in warranty you may want to get it serviced in case the warranty runs out soon.

    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Macbook Pro Battery-Service Battery Signal

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to the mavericks operating system I have had an error message stating Service Battery. Does this mean I need to take my mid 2010 macbook pro lap top to purchase a new battery or is it an error created from the mavericks operating system? It just seems very co incidental this has occurred.
Any help would be much apprecaited

  • Help macbook pro battery 'Service Battery' ?

I got an old mac book off newegg in September it was a macbook pro late 2006 model with the duo core processor. It originally had 2 gb of ram I wanted more so I ordered some now I have 4 gb of ram.Keep in mind I ordered the correct ram for the macbook pro. I installed it,now ever since then it says Service Battery. I even tried to take out the battery for 5 minutes then put it back in the 'Service Battery' is still there when you roll over the battery. This is my 2nd battery I have had with this mac book I purchased it in October.
Here is my current battery info:

      Manufacturer:          SMP
      Device name:          ASMB012

They told me to go to the genius bar to see if it is the battery or the mac book itself.
I just am freaking out because I can not afford another mac book nor battery and I just got this battery I have now in October.

I am sad to tell you that you did not order the correct RAM for your MBP.  The maximum RAM for a Core Duo MBP is 2GB.  You indicate that your problems commenced with the installation of the excessive RAM.  This strongly suggests that there is a correlation.  I would recommend that you put back the old RAM and see if the problem goes away.  If not take it to an Apple store.  There may be residual effects from the wrong RAM that may need to be addressed.
    Ciao.
PS:  I also have a 2006 Core Duo and my response has been done on same.  I still think it is a great MBP, slower than the new ones but does the same things, plus I like the silver key board.

  • Macbook battery & service problem.

Received a refurbished Macbook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo yesterday. Quickly set it up & updated to 10.4.9 etc before noticing the X on the battery icon and no battery power! System Profiler said 'Battery Installed: No' and my heart sank... this laptop was bought by a friend, on my recommendation, & I was meant to be sorting it out for her. She can't wait to start using an Apple.
So, as per Apple's online help: (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305364)
    1. Reseated the battery a few times.
    2. Installed Battery update 1.2
    3. Tried the SMC reset (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319)
    4. PRAM reset (altapple+pr at restart)
    5. Quick Google search: It seems the battery problem was identified by early 2006 - very surprised that faulty ones are still being shipped as new.
A call to Apple uk confirmed that the battery was faulty and needed replacing BUT I'd have to wait a week and give my credit card details in case I didn't give the faulty one back! I suggested an appointment their flagship Regent Street store in London (where they have clinics, workshops, a concierge service, Genius Bar, the works) but apparently they would not be able to replace the battery.
And since I bought through the Apple store online, I'd have to wait for a courier exchange, like Dell. I sighed & gave my card details. 'Sorry, we don't take Maestro or Switch, have you got a VISA card?'. So, I can buy products with my card, but I can't get customer care with it! When I asked if it would be better to simply return the whole unit as it didn't work, I was told that Apple's policy did not permit returns or refunds, only repairs or replacement of faulty parts. I quoted the Sale of Goods Act, and was told that they could replace the unit, but it would take several weeks.
OK, so I used my company card and I'm just crossing my fingers that I'll be at home when the thing arrives.
Have I done the right thing? Should I have insisted on a new unit? Any suggestions?

  • MacBook battery "service battery"

First off, I want to say that I searched many pages of this forum to see if anyone had the same problem as me, and I didn't (or I overlooked it. I apologize if I did).
I've had my Macbook for almost a year now, around 11 and a quarter months. I use my mac very rigorously, on a day-to-day basis, and have currently 338 cycles on my battery count. I've maintained my battery well, keeping 100% status until now.
However, today, when I turned on my computer, I had less than 10% battery. No biggie. And then in a blink of an eye (literally), it went down to 2%. When I clicked on the battery meter, it said "service batter". While looking for my magsafe, the battery then went back up to 33%. And then 10 minutes later, went into sleep mode. Right now, I'm charging my battery. However it still says 'service battery'.
Is there any reason behind this erratic behavior, besides wear and tear? I mean, I honestly did keep good care of the battery (and logged my battery capacity weekly).
If I bring this to Apple, do you think they can service the battery?
    Thanks for all your help.

You can try setting the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
But, honestly, a battery at 300+ cycles has lived a long, happy, fulfilled life. It is probably that battery's time to go.
If I bring this to Apple, do you think they can service the battery?
No. I mean, it doesn't hurt to ask, but at that many cycles, it's very doubtful.

  • Battery service warning at only 40 cycles

    Hi all,
I'm running a MBP early 2011 15 incher, and just recently upgraded to Mavericks. Lately by total battery percentage capacity has been fluctuating quite a bit, jumping between high 80s and low 90s, which I figure was pretty normal behavior. Had been dropping to mid 80s recently. After about a week of non-use, turned it on to see a service battery warning by my indicator, and a total battery percentage of only 76%! Rather alarming especially the light usage. I leave it plugged in a lot of the time, and drain it every now and then to about 20% and bring it back up. With only about 40 cycles over the last couple 2.5 years, I'm pretty shocked, especially with claims of 1000 cycles and only using about 20% total batt capacity.
I've reset the SMC in the past but battery capacity by coconut still shows some fluctuation. Do I have a bad battery?
    Thanks

  • Battery service error + running quite hot

I've notices the last couple of weeks that my macbook is acting very strange, it sometimes dies at 32% and when i try to reboot it gives me the icon that the battery is empty.
Now today i notices this error on my battery where it says "service battery". My macbook runs hot thats quite normal so i use fancontrol.
Beside that i notice it is starting to be slow, especially in finder, webpages, laggy UI.
I'm quite a poweruser, and use alot  of adobe's programs and also C4D. Now that i've seen that my battery went to 35.3 degrees Celcius / 95.5 degrees Farenheit i'm slightly worried it should be around 30 or even less, i know a hot battery is bad for longevity. It has close to 650 cycles wich is over 300 but still not close to 1000. The only other thing i have with this model is my keyboard makes a buzzing noise when the backlighting is on, but this has been like this since i bought it.
i've already did a SMC reset
Anyone have experience with this? are these battery temps normal or are they way to hot?

Aa a point of information, I opened CoconutBattery on my MBP and this is the result:
I do not have any resource intensive applications open and ambient temperature is 25°c.
    Ciao.

  • "Service Battery"-service covered under AppleCare?

    I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook, covered under AppleCare until August 7th, 2013.
My battery has recently started acting strangely, or to be more specific it doesn't act as it did previously.
I thought my charger might be broken, and I replaced it, but the problems are still present.
    - The total charge my battery holds has been strongly reduced in a relatively short period of time.
    - The battery will NEVER become 100% charged. It stops at 98 or 99%.
    - The cycle count seems a little high considering I rarely use the macbook without being connected to a power source.

A year and a half ago I moved to China, and I have continued using my macbook as normal after the move. Could the change in battery performance have anything to do with the electric currents being different over here? My macbook was originally bought in Europe.
    I'm wondering:
    - Will my battery have to be replaced?
    - Will it damage my computer if I don't replace my battery?
    - Does AppleCare cover service/repair in this situation?
My closest Apple Store is in San Li Tun, Beijing.
    - Could I go there directly and inquire about service, or would I have to contact them online first/make an appointment?
    - How much would a new battery cost if my battery ends up needing replacement?
Thank you very much for reading!

Since you have Apple Care I would call and make an appointment for the Apple Techs to evaluate the battery. Your battery has less than the 1000 cycle life considered normal.

  • Macbook 13" fixed in Apple Service Provider, battery service msg appears

I got my computer fixed and received it yesterday, it had snow leopard and asked the service providers tu update it to the latest OSx and the battery seems to not be working properly. The problem they fixed was the mother board (I payed a huge amount of money for it to be replaced), but the battery had no problem apparently; is it a software issue? If so, how can it be fixed?

What percentage charge did you get when it was charging normally and what percentage charge did you have when it stopped charging again?
Since your battery is over two years old, it may not charge to 100%. I have experienced not being able to fully recharge a battery on Macbooks that are a couple of years old. As your battery ages/is recharged x number of times, it loses the ability to take on a full charge.
The 2011 Macbook Pro we have will only charge to 97% for example.

  • Mac needs a new battery, servicing and wiping.

    Hi Guys,
My old Mac needs a new battery as it is literally on its last legs, it also needs to be serviced and wiped as I no longer use it. Im going to take it to the genius bar to get this done.
However before doing this I am looking at saving all of my itunes folders and emails onto a hard drive. I understand how to do my Itunes but not too sure regarding emails? any help with this would be appreciated it is a Microsoft Exchange address if that helps.
Also do you think I could get the battery replaced first then save my things and then book another appointment to get it serviced and wiped. As I have never used the genius bar before
    Thanks in advance.

If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

  • Battery service Maverick

    Hi all,
like many people I see a Service Battery message since I have installed Maverick on my Mac Book Pro (eraly 2011).
I displayed the system report and was really surprised: the battery full charge capacity is down to 796 mAh where it should be something like 6900 mAh!
Attached are the screenshot from coconutBattery and system report.
The number of cycle for the battery is only 292.....
Even with a bad usage and whatever I will do, the full charge capacity can not go so low. it's less than a removable battery used in toys!
I just installed the latest update for Maverick (10.9.2) and nothing changed.
Any suggestion? Someone from Apple to help?

hey, guess what, I just reopened the system report and now the ChargeRemaining is back to 1139 mAh after a SMC reset.
    My steps to fix this:
    - update Maverick to 10.9.2
    - 3 times SMC reset : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    - system report still displaying wrong charge remaining,
    - wait one hour
    - it's fixed
So definitely a software issue with a random problem because the way to fix this seems weird.
So now I will use the Mac Book Pro on battery until it reach 0% and hope it will continue to be OK.
