Battery timer skipping 17 ways to christmas.

so i just got my macbook pro a few days ago and i'm curious about the battery timer. it's jumping all over the friggin place. it'll say i have 8 hours left, then it drops down to 6. then, it jumps back up to 7, now it's down at 5 hrs 26 minutes . i'm going through in the calibration process, i just finished the AC plugged in "2 hour resting period" step and next is to let it drain all the way, rest, and charge it again according to what it says here on the apple site =\
will calibration fix this? it's kind of a pain. i realize that i'm using the computer, but i'm hardly doing much. i just have this webpage open, nothing else.
sorry if this is a noobish question, i just wanted to know if i should snap into panic mode or not :B

The estimated time remaining is just that, an estimate. It's based on whatever the computer is doing at any given moment, and it will vary as what the computer is doing changes. The computer is always doing some things that aren't apparent to the user, and one of those things when the computer is brand new is the Spotlight application indexing your hard drive — a processor- and disk-intensive operation. In addition, it always takes the machine a while to refine its estimates, and it also helps to have the battery properly calibrated. Because none of those things has been completed in your case, the estimates are currently useless. In fact they are pretty useless all the time, because if you start doing something more demanding, the six hours you were expecting to have five minutes ago will suddenly only be four hours, and if you stop doing whatever it is after an hour and a half, the estimate may change from 2.5 hours remaining back to four. So what I recommend to everyone who will listen is to switch from the time display to the percentage display in the menu bar. That at least is an actual measurement instead of a guesswork projection.

  • Battery Time Estimation jumps around.

Sorry if this question has already been answered but is there a way to fix this problem?
I got this new MacBook for Christmas and I keep the Battery Time Estimation on my Finder bar. It often jumps around for example: It jumps from 7 hours to 5 to 4 to 6 and so on. It seems to always stay within 3 hours of what seems to be accurate. Thanks!

    Absolutely!
I decided to put the "test" to practice this morning and unplugged my laptop from AC power. Immediately it read that I had 4hrs, 32mins of charge remaining, which translated to 100% of battery life. I turned off WiFi, set the backlight to 50% and just let it sit with nothing running and 15 minutes later it said I now had 6hrs and 14mins of charge remaining, which now translated to 99% of battery life.
I turned on WiFi, launched Mail and iChat, then proceeded to launch Safari and began opening various threads in the discussions to read/review. My battery percentage dipped to 98% and the life dropped to 5hrs and 02mins.
After another 10-15 minutes of reading the forums and looking at some other websites I decided to launch iTunes and download a podcast that publishes on Thursdays. After it completed downloading, my battery life now read 95% and I had 4hrs and 32mins to go.
I stepped away, came back about 10 minutes later to find I had 94% battery life remaining but had 7hrs and 18mins of life remaining as the computer had been idle the entire time.
So you can see how the time jumped from 4 -> 6 -> 5 -> 4 -> 7 in a span of less than one hour of various usage states. However, throughout the entire time the percentage indicator continued to slowly decrease from 100% to 93% where it now sits as I post this.

  • Personal Best Battery Time

Got my best battery time yesterday. 8:48 use and 1 day 4 hrs standby. I have to admit I wasn't using anything that taxing. No games but several calls, a lot of web and some Youtube. I don't expect to get this every day but I was impressed. I usually get about 4 + hrs. of use.

It all depends what you do. "Usage" is to generic to make accurate comparisons. It all depends on what you do. I can get 12 hours usage and 2 days standby if I only do music. Unfortunately the usage meter doesn't break things down beyond seperating between "calls minutes" and being "on". There is no way to distinguish between 4 hours of data or 4 hours of music except for inferring from the data usage section. Just saying I got 8 hours of battery time doesn't tell the full story.
The iPhone is rated for the following:
    Talk time:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 10 hours on 2G
Standby time: Up to 300 hours
    Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 6 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours
Now these times are for individual functions. To get 300 hours of standby, you have to have everything off. To get 7 hours of video, you probably need the screen on its lowest brightness and have the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi and other services off. Same for Audio playback.

  • 10 hours battery time?

Wonder how the battery time is calculated.... i have calibrated it twice and yet the battery can only last for about 5 hours only where I have only opened safari, microsoft word and excel...
is there any problem with my battery?
PS: i just bought it early of June 2010.

    Sharon Tan,
    Welcome to the forums.
The 10-hour battery life for your MacBook Pro is Apple's claim, which is tested by 'light' web browsing, and low screen brightness.
You say you have Safari opened up, are you watching any videos or playing any games? If so, the decrease in battery life may have something to do with Flash, which is a huge CPU drain and can drastically reduce battery life.
Also, if you have the brightness of either your screen or keyboard turned way up, battery life will go down.

  • Songs "skip" half-way through, or start half-way through

I have had my 3GS since the end of October. I just recently noticed that some songs will skip half-way through to the beginning of the next song, or when a song is over the next song will start half-way through or three-quarters of the way through. I then just tap on rewind and it will play the entire song from the beginning. I should mention that it's not always the same songs, and, I generally listen to the iPod in my car through an audio cable.
Is this a common issue? I've seen similar posts but not exactly like this (or I've simply missed them). Is there a fix?
I've just noticed that Shake to Shuffle is "on", so I'll try turning that off and see if that helps at all.

I have something similar and think I might know what is causing it but not how to fix it. I recently created a playlist in iTunes then copied to the iPod. While creating the playlist I listened to some of the songs for the first minute or so. Now I find that while playing the playlist on the iPod those songs that I previewed start from where I stopped listening to them in iTunes. If I go back into iTunes and play those songs again they do the same thing, start from where I left off the previous time. What I'm trying to figure out now is how to prevent this from happening but always have songs play from the start. I suspect that when copying the playlist to the iPod, it has also copied across information about where iTunes is expecting the song to start from when it's played again.
If it's of any relevance (not sure yet) I recently started using Genius in iTunes although these songs were not picked through Genius

  • Zen Sleek Battery time, loading ti

I`ve bought my Zen Sleek 2005-07-29, but i have som problems with it.
The battery time is nearly on 8 hours instead of 8 that it stand it should be.
And the the seeking time when you shall listen to a song before it starts is sometime 5-6 sek.
    Is this normal?
Can i return it or get a new one or something?
I don`t now what to do.
I want`t the player to act normal, beacuse this is the best mp3 player i`ve ever had.
I just want a solution on my problem. Message Edited by UUnreal on 08-23-2005 03:24 PM

before you get too nervous about battery life, make sure you leave it plugged in and charging for several hours. The battery does not totally charge even when the indicator says "full". There is a 0% or so "trickle" charge that continues for some time after the fast charge cycle. I would guess this will add some playing time to your player. Also, the more you fool around with the thing while using it, the shorter battery life you get. Changing tracks, using shuffle (random), hitting buttons causing the backlight to go on all drain the battery faster. So do high bit-rate songs, especially high bit-rate WMA (which seems to draw fractionally more power than MP3). One of the biggest things I've noticed on my player (Touch) is that "random" causes the hard dri've to run WAY more often. Apparently it can't load as much into its internal memory at a time, so it has to seek and load songs far more often.

Did you check the Zoom setting?
Have you tried a reset (reboot)? Hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears.
If it isn't Zoom and a reboot doesn't help try Settings/General/Reset - Reset all settings

  • Since allowing my upgrade to happen, I am unable to double press and shut off apps that are now eating up my battery time. It doesn't "wiggle" anymore to allow me to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am a new user and when the phone asked for the upgrade.. I have had a lot of problems. First it eliminated all of my contacts. Also, I use to be able to close open apps to reduce battery usage by holding my finger on the apps until they "wiggled" allowing me to shut the active app off. I cannot do this any more and now my battery time is lasting about 5 hours tops. This is without me using any apps other than answering calls. Can someone please help.

    Hi Michellem_14,
Have you reset or restarted your iPhone since the update?
Hold down the home button and the power button until you see an Apple logo
Release both buttons and the iPhone will restart.

  • Battery time and enhancement features

Smartphone’s are known for consuming a lot of battery power and depending on your configuration your phone might last longer or shorter than other phones. This topic contains some advice and info about what you can do to increase your battery time.
When using your new Android phone it will take approximately up to a week or so before the phone settles in its battery usage and power management, depending on applications installed and the amount of content in your phone. It’s worth mentioning that this evaluation that the phone runs in the background at first period of use will happen again after master reset or reinstalling/repairing the phone software. So if you have just reset or reinstalled your phone, this power management evaluation process will run again. So it might at first seem like your phone is consuming more battery power than before the reset, but its normal.
If you have been using your phone for a couple of week and still think that the battery time is a bit too low, here’s some advice that will increase the battery time.
First of all make sure that your phone is running on the latest version of the firmware. You can use PC Companion to check for software updates for your phone.
    http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
Or Bridge for Mac if you’re a Mac user:
    http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/bridge-for-mac/
You can also check battery consumption via the menu; Settings > About phone > Battery use, or Settings > Battery, or Settings > Power management > Battery.
Things that can be disabled or reduced when you don't need them:
    Dim the screen
    Disable live wallpaper if used
Turn off 3G (WCDMA), 4G (LTE).
    Turn off mobile data traffic
    Turn off Bluetooth®
    Turn off Wi-Fi®
    Turn off GPS
By doing this you will increase your battery time. But if you're still experiencing a low battery time you can try the following as proposed by many users on the forum. (Only applies for phones using removable battery)
When phone reaches 50% in battery level turn it off and pick out the battery for a few minutes. Put it back and connect the charger, now charge the phone turned off for about 5 hours or overnight. Start the phone as normal and check if the battery life time has improved.
You can also let the phone drain the battery completely until it turns itself on and won’t start again.
At this point connect the charger but do not turn on the phone, leave it charging while turned off until the battery indicator on the screen is completely filled.
Also make sure that you’re using a Sony original charger.
    Battery enhancement features
    Extended standby mode
Use the extended standby mode to make the battery last longer. Your Wi-Fi® connection, data traffic and unused applications are then paused when the phone is in standby. You can still receive phone calls, text and multimedia messages. Once the phone is used again, all paused functions are resumed.
You can enable/disable Extended standby mode via Settings > Power management. (Depending on model)
    STAMINA mode
It has already been mentioned a couple of times that Smartphone’s use a lot of power, even when you’re not actively using them. All those app’s that you have on your phone may still be running in the background, draining your battery. STAMINA mode is a further development of Extended standby mode and saves wasted battery drain by recognizing when your display is off and turning off functions you don’t need, while keeping the notifications you want. As soon as you wake up your Android Smartphone, everything is up and running again.
    Get only the important notices.
With Battery STAMINA mode, Wi-Fi® and data traffic are disabled during standby, but you still receive incoming calls, texts, and alarms. And since everyone has different needs, you can easily customize which app's you want to receive push notifications from even in standby mode. Facebook notifications on or off? It’s up to you.
The STAMINA mode will constantly re-evaluate your usage and update the expected standby time accordingly.
This standby time will completely vary depending on your own personal usage. You may see that when you first start using your handset, the Standby time will be higher than what is expected after you have used the handset for a few days. This is due to STAMINA mode having no previous usage history to estimate from.
If you have a very high usage level, you may only see a slight improvement between having STAMINA enabled and disabled. STAMINA mode is more effective the more often the display is turned off as this is when the power saving features kick in. If the display is rarely turned off, you may not see much improvement in the battery performance.
You can enable/disable STAMINA standby mode via Settings > Power management. (Depending on model)

I was warned and I went straight to the site and they were gone.  I didnt was any time. Either way, there should be a way to either store or restore such items. Have you ever lost pictures that were so important to you that you couldnt sleep or eat for some time. I have and it wasnt fun. I'm glad that you were able to get yours unlike some of us.

I am still wondering why iTunes tries to confuse me every time I try to make changes in my preferences, telling me that I "don't have enough permissions", although I am the administrator.
That's clearly a fault. Whether it's an iTunes problem or a Windows problem I can't say at this time. If you search the Using iTunes for Windows forum for "permissions", you should find threads that can help you sort out this problem.
Then, changes to the format are not obvious, and I get no notice that I am burning music files as data.
If you click on a playlist and look at the lower-right of the iTunes window, it says right there what format it will use to burn the playlist.

  • Best battery time for video

Some users in far-east asia are reporting that 60GB model battery time is 6 ~ 7 hrs for continuous video play back, and 30GB model is showing 3.5 ~ 4 hrs video play time.
(Yep, music play time is not an issue at all because it's 10 times of video play time, as you guess.)
However, according to the posts, encoded video files should be very well optimized to iPod video performance, which means that, I guess, some specific video encoding settings are very critical for the battery time.
Well I wish I can figure out what's the best settings.
    My 30GB model showed 2 hrs video play time for .mp4, 368x192, 30fps, 768kbps, 44kHz, 128kbps movie.
If anybody can post your experience, it would be helpful.
    Thanks,

Other people said that H.264 is the most optimized vifeo format for 5G iPOD. So H.264 format consumes less power than mp4 format. Is that correct?
    Any comments are welcome.

  • Incorrect Battery Time

I recently started having a problem with my battery time display. The battery still lasts about two hours on a full charge, however, the time and percentage displayed are very wrong. As of right now, it says I have 11:39 remaining or 93%. In reality, I probably have about an hour left and about 40-60% remaining. I have tried recalibrating it several times to no avail and I have also tried resetting the power manager. Using coconutBattery, it shows that I have a battery capacity of 23863 mAh (I wish!) when it should be 5400 mAh. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on how to get the time and percentage reading back to being accurate. Thanks!

I'm assuming that you have an older PowerBook, or possibly an older battery. I have this problem on my PowerBook, but mine will stay on 100% for like an half hour and then drop to 90% and then to 80, so on and so forth. This is a problem with OS X and has been a problem the plauged PowerBooks for years now (even on my Mac Portable, I had problems). So you just got to make notes for yourself and go with it.
