Battery unable to discharge?

Hi all,
I have a unibody aluminum macbook from 2008. My battery it's pretty gone by now, something I already knew. Recently though, instead than draining very quickly, it started doing something different. In fact, it won't discharge. Instead than going from 100 to 0 (well, I wish it went to 0, but to give you the idea), it will just "die" a few seconds after I disconnect the macbook from power, while still reporting 100%. If I click on the side of the macbook for the led indicator, it reports the battery being charged. As soon as I reconnect it to the charger, the macbook boots on without a problem.
If you think it's simply the batter, which could sort of makes sense, I'll just buy a new one, end of story. I just want to double check it's not something different/more serious, before I get a new battery.
Thanks for your help.

Time for a new battery

BlackBerry PlayBook battery power charge, discharge characteristics, and guidance on extending battery life
    KB27705
    Overview
The BlackBerry PlayBook may come to a power state where it is unable to power on; a Yellow LED may flash in a sequence of 5 flashes, the BlackBerry PlayBook may boot up to the BlackBerry PlayBook Logo and then power off, may not power on at all.
    Discharge behavior under normal use:
Under normal active use, a battery drained to 10% will cause the device to prompt the BlackBerry PlayBook user (notification and audible beep)
Without connecting a charger the device will automatically shut down at 3.53V (0%)
Pressing the power button may allow successful boot, but it will turn off again very quickly
    Discharge behavior under no use:
A device left unused but in ‘Stand By’ will warn the BlackBerry PlayBook user at 10% (notification and audible beep)
The warning may not be noticed and the device will go back to ‘Stand By’
Letting the device drain in standby mode drains the battery slower, but more completely
Device will still shut off at 3.53V (0%), but it less likely to successfully boot afterwards
    Discharge behavior under 3.53V (0%):
If the device is left to shutoff, the battery will continue to drain below 3.53V due to quiescent current draw from the motherboard and the battery fuel gauge
With the battery between 2.7V-3.53V, pressing the power button causes the LED to flash a pattern (1 solid red light followed by 5 yellow blinks)  to indicate low battery (PlayBook Tablet OS version 1.0.5, and above)
Below 2.7V there is no activity, or LED pattern displayed
    Charge Behaviour:
The provided charger should be used to charge the device. The optional 12 volt rapid charger is may reduce charging times
to approximately 3 to 4 hrs. Standard Blackberry smartphone chargers, other AC adapter USB chargers, or computer USB ports
are not recommended for the sole purpose of charging the PlayBook as with these methods it may take more that 12 hours to
    charge the BlackBerry Playbook.
If the battery voltage is below 3.53V(0%) then the charging behaviour is dependent on the software version.  The charging code will limit the charging current to under 400 milliamps, during which time, it may take an hour to reach 3.53 Volts. Once the battery voltage rises past 3.53 volts, then "high-rate" charging will start. If, after charging the Tablet for 4 to 6 hours still does not result in LED activity, attempt to force power on the BlackBerry Playbook by pressing and holding only the Power Button for only 20 seconds.
Prior to BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.5:
A BlackBerry PlayBook will never charge while powered off in BlackBerry Tablet OS versions prior to 1.0.5.
The device will show a red light when the charger is connected and then nothing more
Repeated connection of the charger can recover the device in some instances.
Once the battery voltage rises above 3.53V the system will boot and the UI will show charging
Starting in BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.5:
The device will show a solid red LED, followed by a solid yellow LED as the device boots into charging mode.  This is followed by a yellow pulsating LED indicating charging in progress.
The time span between the red and yellow lights can be as long as 45 seconds as the device boots into charging mode.
Once the yellow LED illuminates, the device can be started, but it is advisable to let it charge for at least 3.5 hours to achieve a sufficient charge.
The device will show a solid green LED once the device is fully charged.
Starting in BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0.1:
Once the yellow LED begins pulsating indicating charging mode, if the BlackBerry PlayBook is disconnected from the charger, the following graphic will be displayed on the screen, indicating charging is not complete, and to reconnect the power source. The graphic will be displayed for 20 seconds before the BlackBerry® PlayBook powers off if the power source is not reconnected. The same graphic will also be displayed if the BlackBerry PlayBook is turned on and there is not sufficient power to perform the boot process.
If the BlackBerry PlayBook is plugged into a power source, and the power button is pressed to power on the device, the following graphic will be displayed if there is not sufficient power to perform the boot process. If this occurs, the BlackBerry PlayBook should be left plugged in to gain enough charge to boot.

With the upgrade to PlayBook OS 2.1.0.1032 the following message may be displayed when connecting the Playbook to a PC using the micro-USB cable:
Unable to charge battery with connected source
This message is displayed because the voltage provided is insufficient for charging. The USB voltage is limited to 384mA even if the maximum tolerance is 500mA. The voltage is limited to 384mA by design to avoid violating the USB specification which states USB devices cannot draw more than 500mA from the USB port.

  • Battery - charging or discharging?

like many on here I have been effected by much reduced battery life following the upgrade to 3.1 and 3.1.2 - mine sits on charge for most of the day and so it doesn’t really effect me, however I do use my phone at night as a Night stand clock sitting in a charging dock. Night stand and similar apps allow you to keep the phone running i.e. no auto shut down and I have regularly recently woken in the early hours to a phone showing no battery life, despite it sitting in the charging dock it the icon showing it was charging.
I took the advice of another user on here and loaded an app called “system activity monitor” - this showed me that despite my phone saying it was charging on the icon the battery was actually discharging rather than charging, even when at say 50% power. The "discharging / charging" display keeps swapping on irregular intervals and I am just posting this topic to see if others have experienced similar issues. It seems very strange that the phone thinks it’s charging when it actually isn’t. - surely this must drain batteries. Also despite the discharging/charging problem I found that if I switch email to “manual” then I get through the night with 50% power remaining – last might I swapped back to Push and the battery was dead in about 4 hours – and that’s despite the phone being in airplane mode - Something with Push is clearly not right to drain the battery so quickly, especially when I had assumed if I was airplane mode the push would be automatically disabled!
    any comments gratefully received
    thanks

I have an identical issue to the one described by the IBM page - failure to charge, and sudden shutdowns, meaning I can only run with the battery removed and AC connected. I am aware the IBM replacement programme finished in 2008. What does that mean for me now? I understand that batteries are consumables, but this seems a specific technical malfunction.
If I buy a new battery, will I experience the same issues or have new batteries had their hardware corrected for this problem.
    Thanks.

  • Battery is constantly discharging quickly

battery is constantly discharging quickly.  Any workarounds?

Is your battery worn out? How long have you had it? Since the battery is lithium-ion, over time using the battery and charging and discharging over time wears out the battery. If you've had it for a few years, this might be the case. If it is fairly new, it might be just a bad battery. If so, you might need it replaced. The warranty should cover it. If this still does'nt help, describe a little more about the device. Depending on factors of the device the reason could be a lot of things. Hope this can give you pointers. Hope it helps!

  • I recently performed a upgrade from 7.0.5 to 7.0.6 and I found that my phone battery drain up very fast and the battery unable charge to 100. Besides, the battery live is going down when I charging with  3G on.Any solution for my issue? Please help.

Hi, I had my iPhone 4S and I'm recently upgraded it from 7.0.5 to 7.0.6 and I found the battery drain up very fast if compare to iOS 7.0.5. Besides, I also unable to fully charger my phone to 100% now - max is 85% with phone either in airplane mode or switch off totally
May seek help from your advise on above case.
    Thank you
    Best regards,
    Adrian

Try killing the battery (Let it drain---turning on all the settings, playing a video, and having the brightness up kills it faster), then let it fully charge from there. Let me know if that works.

  • Battery Cycles and discharge when plugged in

    Hi all,
Couple of questions from a newbie unibody MBP owner.
    1) My battery is draining slightly even when I have it plugged in. Over 3 days using it plugged in and shutting down in between, my charge goes from 99% down to 95 and triggers a recharge. Is this normal?
    2) My battery seems to add cycles every time I charge it - even if I've only used it on battery for an hour of plain browsing. Aren't cycles meant to reflect accumulated discharge rather than number of charging events?
Battery has been calibrated twice since I received it 2 weeks ago.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your reply Mr Engineer.
So re the charge cycle, it shouldn't be adding whole cycles to the count each time I only used a small a amount of charge, then recharge. IE - 1 cycle should = 10 x (using 10% of the battery, then recharging).
Since mine is adding cycles each time I recharge, is this likely to be a software or a hardware(battery) problem, and how do I get it fixed - just call AppleCare?
    Many thanks

  • Battery allowed to discharge and Date/Time settings lost

My wife left her MBP opened and unplugged. The battery completely discharged. When she powered the computer with a power cord, the Date/Time were completely wrong. She also lost her network settings.
To me, this sounds like the internal (bios) battery has a minimum voltage. Does anyone have some insight to this before I go struggle with the Genius Bar?

I had the same problem; I let it go, as it seemed to be fine after charging.
Now I've just started up with a full charge - and had the same problem!
Does anyone know if the date & time etc settings are kept from a seperate battery (one of those tiny lithium jobs) or if it uses a "trickle" off the main battery? Has anyone else experienced this?
I will call support for this as the machine's only 3 months old.
    Insight appreciated...!

  • Battery Fully Charging/Discharging

I have new 30gb Touch I hooked up to a USB port on my PC to let it fully charge. It does fully charge but after it falls asleep while still connected to the PC discharges to 10 to 20% within 4-5 hours. I am not even using it so why is it discharging?
Do I have a defective ipod? It is still under 30 days so I still have time to return it unless this is unless this is typical behavior after a full charge or bug with latest firmware?
    thx

I hooked it to a different USB and are waiting for it to do it again. In the last 3 hours no discharge but something odd did happen. The Ipod was turned off and all on its own without me doing anything lit up with an all white screen. I went over to it and hit the top button to turn it on to see what it was doing but nothing appeared to be wrong and the battery is still fully charged with a lighting bolt through it.
Maybe if I had left it at this point it would start discharging? Perhaps that all white screen means something?

  • After upgrading to Yosemite under sleep mode for few hrs battery is getting discharged fully.

    System information
Mac book Pro 13 inch Retina  Early 2013
    Processor  - 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory - 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics - Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    Storage capacity - 500 GB
    OSX - 10.10
Ever since I have upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite - battery consumption has increased.
and MOST CRUCIAL ISSUE IS - under sleep mode battery is getting drained like anything ...
for eg - I had 70% charge last night and it got completely drained when I got up in the morning.
there was no charge left in the battery after 6 hrs under sleep mode and it is happening for last 5 days every night...
I have already tried various things as troubleshooting....
    Apple hardware test.
    SMC
    emptying caches etc....
observing activity monitor and finding any program taking more energy etc... (nothing is found)..
      L3 Cache: 3 MB
      Memory: 8 G

    UPDATE: Resolved!
Disabled all login items but problem persisted on normal boot. Resetting SMC and PRAM had no effect. After booting into Safe Boot, problem did not exist. Looked in console logs and saw this right as problem started to occur:
10/20/14 6:49:07.004 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.gspy.MO3V2Daemon[93967]) Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 2: No such file or directory: /Library/MO3V2/MO3V2Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/MO3V2Daemon
This pertains to the Steelseries WoW MMO gaming mouse. Ran the uninstall.command from Applications for this mouse software and rebooted. Fixed.
Light on MagSafe connector is orange, battery shows as charging, fan is not running constantly. I can't begin to understand how this would effect the battery charging functions but, after uninstalling this, the problem was resolved. Hope this will help someone else.

  • IPhone won't power on or show battery icon after discharge.

My iPhone4 ran out of battery.  I plugged as soon as I could after it ran out (within 15 mins) and charged it overnight.  It won't power on this morning and does not show the charged battery icon on the screen.  The phone is only 4.5 months old and has never been left in a car or extreme heat.  I always let the bettery run down to <10% before charging and then charge back to full capacity.   I have tried holding down the home key and the sleep/wake buttons individually and together and nothing.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help.  I had tried to connect it to the computer on my own and found out that my version of iTunes must  be too old to talk to my iPhone4.  I am still running 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4 which uses an older version of iTunes.  I don't use the music feature on my phone to conserve my battery for Apps and other features I really like and leave the music to my Shuffle.  Guess I am really lucky it doesn't work as I would hate to loose my photos of my new grandson.  I need to find a quick way to send them to backup storage.
When I disconnected after trying the computer and tried your suggestion of holding it until I saw the symbol, it finally worked.  Guess I did not hold them both together for long enough.  The battery only shows 31% even though it was on wall charger all night.  I will use it as is today and charge it overnight again to see if it gets a full charge.

  • Battery unable to be removed

Week old 15in C2D MacBook Pro and just bought another battery for it. I am trying to switch batteries but I can't seem to remove the one that came with it. I have pushed on both tabs together until orange appears beneath. Somehow the battery is not popping up as it says it should do in the manual. Should I return the MacBook for another one?
    C2D MacBook Pro 15in   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I might be a little late in on this, but I was having this problem just this morning, and I think I found a solution for it (and also a way to prevent it happening again.)
First, the prevention: when you replace a battery back into the machine, make sure that edge that is away from the latches is pressed against the far edge of the machine as you lay the battery in. In other words, don't just slap the battery in there, lay the far edge in first and kind of slide it in. The latch makes a much more satisfying sort of click, and the battery comes right out again when you use the tabs.
To get it unstuck from the time I wasn't so careful in putting it back, I gently pressed my thumbs against the battery and slid it away from the latches (while they were showing no orange) then used the tabs normally. It popped right out.
I'd need a physicist to tell me if there's any danger to the battery or the machine from the little bit of pressure I put on it, though.

  • Please Help:Ipod Classic 30GB Battery going to discharge connection with pc

    hi..
Please Help me....I had an Apple Ipod 30gb classic, when i connect my ipod to pc it will automatically discharge itself, but i will charge automatically with direct connection without pc connection..how can i solve my problem...kindly help....my email id: [email protected]
    help...

My only guess is that age is playing a factor and that your hard drive is causing you problems. The 30GB came out 2005-2006 so it's been out there quite a while. Maybe a diagnostic visit to the Apple Store can help.

  • N8 battery is getting discharged very soon!!!!

we have to recharge the mobile twice a day

If the phone is brand new you should know that lithium ion batteries take about a dozen charges before it reaches optimum performance. So, your batterly life should keep improving for the first few weeks. Also have a look at features like bluetooth and wifi. These should should be disabled when not used. Email, messaging and social apps should be set to sync/updateat as long as interval as possible. I normally set them to update manually. I usually get 3-4 days battery life with my N8.

  • Purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S 64GB in March 2012 while on a vacation to USA. The phone does take up the charge it always shows the red signal whenever the the battery is completely discharged. Am i eligible to get the service in India?

Purchased an iPhone in USA while on Vacation. The phone would not start. The APPLE customer service in India would not provide the desired service. They advised me to send this phone to the country of Purchase for which I have no option. Please advise if there is any other way out or I cremate the phone for good?
Surprisingly the apple site when the serial number is keyed in says that the service is available in India as well. But sadly the personnel on the phone says that the information is incorrect and that Apple has not dispalyed the correct information on the site. Please advise what to do.

There is no catch.  Apple offers international warranty on some products i.e. iMac, MacBook Pro etc but excludes the iPhone.  This question has been asked and answered numerous times on these forums and if you do a search you will find the advice is consistent in that there is no international warranty on the iPhone.
