Battery won't charge anymore, charger light orange

for some unknows reasons,
my battery won't charge ,
the adapter light stay orange but the charge stay to 0%,
(or 40% for the brand new battery from apple store)
-i've tried to reset the PMU but no effect
-i've ordered a new Apple battery but no charging allowed,
it stay to 40% pre-charge when sector plugged or decrease the charge with only battery
the powerbook works with battery only or sector only, but charging the battery simply doesn't works.
-i've checked the charger, it works
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302461
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=32155-fr
-i've starded from a firewire harddisk with a new system : battery no charge
-i've made the test with the Apple Service diagnostic 2.5.7 CD
(nothing found)
then it is a logic board issue ??
for a almost 2 years-old machine it's a shame
what the procedure to follow in my country to diagnostic and fix ?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Sorry to hear about your battery issue. When a battery appears to be failing, typically either the battery is bad or the logic board is misbehaving. You have a new battery and that didn't change the symptoms, you've determined the power supply is functional, and you've run the Apple hardware test from your OS X DVD and found nothing (the Apple hardware test tests the logic board). Do you know anyone with Applecare who has the TechTools Deluxe CD, that you could borrow to also test the logic board?
I don't expect this will fix it, however, you can also reset your PRAM/NVRAM by following the directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238.
It sounds like you need to take your system to an Apple store for analysis.

  • Battery won't charge - intermittent

Noticed this problem recently. The orange light is on but my battery won't charge. Although the battery is old (55 months) Coconut says capacity 100%, charger connected but that the battery is not charging. Intermittent charging does occur when powerbook swithched on. The power adaptor seems intact. Have reset PVRAM. Tried most other solutions I have seen and nothing working. Any suggestions?

Hope John Mitchell doesn't mind if I piggyback on his thread.
I just noticed a similar problem on my Powerbook G4 12". It's more than 3 years old and I recently installed Leopard. I pretty much leave it plugged in most of the time; in fact, I think it's been a few months since I used the battery.
Anyway, the AC adaptor light stays green but the battery won't charge. I tried taking out the battery and putting it back, unplugging the adaptor for 60 seconds, checking the adaptor and "duckhead" plug and resetting the PMU. None of them have made a difference.
Curiously, I keep getting a message on restart that says my internal clock is set to prior than Mar., 2001 but when I went to Sys. Prefs, that wasn't the case.
Also, a couple of times, such as right after resetting the PMU, the orange light came on before I restarted but then it went to green and the battery won't charge.
Is my battery just old and I need to get a new one?

  • Battery won't charge

I had my MBP for 3-4 months now. My problem is that the battery won't charge when it has more than a certain persent. If it goes red (the battery indicator on top), then it charges to 100% but before it charges to 100% the light blinks green, amber, green, amber (like the one mention a few post before mine). When its at (lets say) 85%, it won't charge, all I get is a green light from the magsafe indicator and its stuck there. The persent indicator on the screen doesnt move as well, I also check the led indicator at the bottom of the battery, one led is not lit. I did the reset the PMU as well as battery calibration it didnt help. I'm down to like ~ 4200 mAh. It has like 11 charges since I got this, age of the machine is 4 months. So I can't call apple to ask for help unless I want to pay like $56 for a week of tech support or buy the applecare (I only have 90 days of telephone support, and it ended a couple of weeks ago). Any way I can email apple or something?

Because it says invalid. Apparently, they forgot to put a "it must start with 6N"
The website should say (according to the apple tech):
    Identifying your battery
The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that begins with 6N and ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. See photos below. Only batteries within the noted serial number ranges need to be exchanged.
    Edit, it says:
One or more of your serial numbers didn't validate.
Please check the serial number and try again. Or, in the United States, call 800-275-2273 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. PST for further assistance. For other countries, please use our contact page to find the appropriate support number.

  • Battery Won't Charge & Can't Update OSX Beyond 10.4.6

I'm a relatively new Macbook user, so any insight would be helpful.
    Here's my plight:
My battery won't charge, so I called AppleCare and they told me to download the latest FIRMWARE for the battery. (This is after re-setting the battery, and pressing the button located on the BACK of the battery, hoping to get the three-or-four green lights... I'm getting nothing).
I came here and downloaded a battery fix/update - the problem is that the battery fix requires my OS to be 10.4.8.... I have 10.4.6... And I can't log onto the internet (another 'fun' issue) through my Macbook in order to download anything beyond 10.4.6....
So, now, I downloaded 10.4.7 from the apple website, off my Windoze PC, yet when I try to load 10.4.7 on my Macbook, the set-up goes through the motions, then STOPS after I ACCEPT the terms, and tells me that I don't have a (I'm paraphrasing) proper HD to store the updated version.
No more than two months ago I had to get a new HD (after only having my MacBook for six months) and I'm not looking to get another one...
Since the root of my issues stem from me not being able to upgrade... Any thoughts on how to upgrade, even though I can't connect my Macbook to the net?

Your battery has as much life in it as Ossama Binladen.  You need a new one which can be installed at an Apple store.  1241 cycles is more than one can reasonably expect.  Though you may operate your MBP with the power adapter, the performance will be slowed down by the OS until a new battery is installed.
    Ciao.

  • Battery won't charge - yet another

Recently, I decided that I would start using my Lombard again out of the house. It works fine on the AC adapter.
First thing I did was replace the small PRAM battery. Then I noticed my old batteries would not charge(they were both over 5 years old). So I reset everything, all the usual stuff. Nothing.
So I bite the bullet a go buy and new battery. It wont charge in OS X or 9.
I rebooted(reset PRAM) several times. Switched to OS 9 and used the Battery Reset application. No luck. I guess this is a common condition of our old Lombards.
JPL mentions in a previous post that there are 4 cards that affect battery charging.
Elizabeth English, "G3 laptop battery won't charge up", 07:01pm Oct 27, 2005 CDT
    charge card
    PMU board
    power supply card
    logic board
Has anyone replaced any of these (except the logic board)? I am curious as to ball park prices. I don’t think the logic board replacement price could be justified. But if the other cards are reasonable maybe.
I am really thinking that it may be time for a new Powerbook.

    Hi JPL,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
The machine does recognize that there is a battery(in both bays). I have tried a few battery measurement apps(x-charge and capacity meter) and they both see the battery. But they both say that the battery is not charging. Also no X in the menu bar.
It had a tiny bit of charge when I bought it. (as indicated by the lights on the side). Butt wont run the Lombard not even for a second.
I should clarify "storage" situation. I had been using the Lombard every so often but on AC only. Because the other 2 batteries had died and I assumed they just died because of the natural life that all batteries have. It is possible that the charging issue has was there before. I wasn't sure that I wanted to invest anything more into the Lombard so I had waited to buy a new battery.
It is possible that it is defective. It is an Apple M7318 battery. I had been told by a few other dealers that these batteries were no longer available and they could order in a 3rd party battery. So when I found a dealer with an Apple battery I went right down and bought it. They are a reputable dealer.
I even asked the guy a few times. Is it new? And he said yes.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a Lombard or Pismo any more.
    One final note.
Capacity Meter "tells" me that the battery condition is very poor. And that capcity is 0/4600. I assume that means milliAmps. Does that mean the battry is dead?

  • Battery won't Charge is it Adaptor or Battery?

My AC Adaptor is correctly plugged in to my iBook, the light turns either amber or dark red like it usually is when it's charging, but the battery won't charge. The light's on the battery don't turn on and the computer won't turn on since the battery is dead. When I press on the battery button quick green flashes happen saying it's dead, so my question IS THE BATTERY DEAD OR IS MY ADAPTOR BROKEN?

This is turning out to be an epidemic. I have an ibook G4 800 and it started doing the same thing a couple days ago. I have another ibook that I charge the battery in, then put it in the G4. But the thing wont start up off just the power cord, and it wont charge the battery. I've reset the PMU and the PRAM, and this hasn't helped anything. 299 for Apple to repair it. But I do get free overnight shipping both ways. That was nice of them.

  • Battery won't charge if awake

I'm having a strange problem. My battery won't charge unless the computer is asleep or turned off. When it is on and awake, the light ring on the power connector is off. Once I close the lid, the light turns on, and the battery charges. I know the AC adapter works, since the battery icon in the menu bar changes to the plug, and coconut indicates the power adapter is connected.
Any ideas on what would cause this?
    --Ian

So, again after I completely drained the battery to my ipod touch, I plugged it into my computer to charge it, and again, when it is off and I plug it in, the unit automatically turns on but the battery indicator icon in the top right corner of the home screen shows that it is not being charged, even though it is connected to the computer and is able to synch with itunes (and when it is synching, my background is displayed instead of the large battery icon showing that it is charging). There are, however, several other places that show it IS actually charging:
    1. When I first plugged it in, instead of turning on, the unit displayed a large battery icon with a lighting bolt under it, telling me that it is charging but the power is so low it must charge for a few moments before starting up and going to the home screen.
    2. The battery charge icon that appears next to the name of my ipod on itunes shows that it is charging.
    3. As an experiment, just to see what would happen, I just left the ipod connected to the computer while on the home screen on the ipod. After a few minutes, the battery icon suddenly changed to indicate the unit was charging, as well as making the small little chime to signify it has been connected to a computer (even though it already was connected to a computer for several minutes and had in fact done a full synch with itunes.)
For some reason, when the battery is completely drained, there is a long delay between the time that the unit is plugged into my computer to the time where the unit, when on the home screen or the synch-status screen it will indicate that it is actually charging. But it only occurs if the unit is off BEFORE it is plugged into the computer.
    Comments, explanations, opinions all welcome.

  • Battery won't charge, adapter shows green

My battery won't charge. The adapter light shows green. The System Profiler says:
    "Battery installed: Yes
    Remaining capacity (mAh): 0
AC Adapter cannot charge battery: Yes
    AC Charger (Watts): 0
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: No"
This started suddenly, as it was working fine yesterday. Overnight the battery ran down all the way. I reset the PMU, but no change. This is a replacement Apple battery now about 2 months old. The adapter works fine, as it works on my other laptop. I used a different adapter, just to make sure, but it didn't work either. So, it's not the adapter. The menu bar shows the battery symbol with a plug inside it with "calculating" constantly showing beside it. Is the problem with my battery or some more serious hardware problem? Thanks for any help.

    Similar but different?
Battery won't charge - coconut says 0% BUT I know that there is charge in the battery because I opened it, located the terminals and applied a slow charge (12.2 Vm current limited at ~ 250-300 ma overnight and now battery open circuit voltage is and holds at 12.2-11.1 volts. Power adapter shows green. Machine goes to sleep if pull power adaptor.
BUT the internal charge monitoring circuit in the battery pack needs to be reset/reinitialized.
Tried to reset pmu, pram, nvram to no avail icon in upper right shows 0%
    No help
Any source of info on how or what I'd need to do this?

  • Battery won't charge even if AC adapter is on-line

I recently installed Arch on my R61 Thinkpad. I did not have any problem I couldn't solve until today when I noticed that my battery won't charge anymore.
    acpitool's output is:
    Battery #1 : charged, 95.85%
    AC adapter : on-line
    Thermal zone 1 : ok, 48 C
    Thermal zone 2 : ok, 45 C
Battery level will not go higher than this percentage, but will get lower if I unplug the adapter.
I don't know what is the source of this problem.

how old is the battery? how often was it recharged? batteries usually lose capacity over time. try to discharge and recharge it completely.

  • Battery won't charge, computer won't turn on

My battery won't charge, even though the power adapter light is on as if charging. I've tried using other power dapaters of the same model, with the same results; no charge. Now the battery is dead and the computer won't turn on. Should I just get a new battery?

I tried resetting the PMU, before the battery totally ran out. Now I'm sure the battery is totally dead, but not sure if it will charge once I get a new battery. Looking at other postings, it sounds like the problem could be with the logic board.

    Hi,
if the battery is not used for long time and kept connected to notebook, there are chances of battery going bad.
you may want to download HP Battery Health check from here.

The iPod touch 5 battery won't charge, the iPod battery gets hot and doesn't turn on...  What is wrong?  Can photos and data be retrieved?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. I suspect a hardware problem  due to the hotness. If iTunes can't see the iPod then uor only hope if to contact a data recovery company for getting data off the iPod. If you have an iPod backup you can restore another iPod, iPhone or iPad from the backup to get the data that was in the backup
