BB 8830 - GPS

I've recently obtlained a BB 8830.  If I go on ''Option'' , , ,  ''GPS'', I get: GPS Data Source: Device GPS, and GPS Service: ON.
How do I use it?  Do I need a subscription of sorts with my carrier (Bell Mobility), or is the GPS self-contained, like a Garmin, for example.
I'm completely new to this thing.  So don't assume I know anything!!!!
Thanks

HELP!  My 8830 resets the gps location feature to off automatically.  Then when I go to use Sprint Telenav it won't connect to GPS.  After resetting GPS location to "on", it will sometimes work, but seems to lose GPS signal awfully easy.
Another problem is that the unit will freeze up.  I got my emails and voice mail four hours late last night. The browser wouldn't work, and I had to power down, remove the battery and restart to get things working again.
This past weekend, I didn't get my voice mail notification until sometime on Monday. It seems that the unit was in the "freeze up" state for quite some time.  Funny, it WILL still make and receive calls in this frozen condition.  Phone works fine!
When it works, it is a great tool.  I am just concerned about these issues.  I have 14 days left to return it and I want to be sure it is worth keeping.   With the current hassels, it really isn't worth it!  Have also sent a help request to Sprint Customer no-support.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I have an 8830 and it is a great phone. I've had no issues with the GPS. I do wish it had more memory, but when is that not true?

  • Need Solution For Motorcyclist, GPS, Music, BB 8830 and Intercom.

Hello, here is a real hands free scenario that I and many other Motorcyclists would pay bucks for; most of the long distance riders would love to have GPS with Voice Response, Phone, Music (XM or Sirius) and Intercom all in one wireless package communicating from the Blackberry to the Rider / Riders helmet.
As I understand it there are some problems with either the software package that Verizon uses for their GPS (VZ Navigator) or transmitting data via blue tooth.  They do have a product that transmits from the Blackberry via blue tooth to what they call a “Gateway”.  Below is the text from that product:
“Break away from your regular headsets and enjoy your favorite music throughout the comfort of your own home. This small, stylish device works with your home sound system or personal stereo to stream the music stored on your BlackBerry smartphone or other A2DP-compatible devices. To wirelessly transmit your music, simply connect the Gateway using the accompanying 3.5mm stereo cable or RCA auxiliary cable to your stereo system, turn on the gateway, pair your device, and that's it! You are free to roam up to 30 feet without missing a single beat. The BlackBerry Remote Stereo Gateway is compatible with all Bluetooth enabled mobile devices so you can stream your music from your BlackBerry smartphone, PC, laptop, or any other A2DP-compatible mobile phone. This easy to use, ultra portable accessory is great for those looking to enjoy their music the way it is supposed to be heard. Includes a BlackBerry Travel Charger necessary to provide power”. So, I really do not understand what the problem is.  To Me it looks like I can do every thing that I want, I just need a compatible head set microphone for My Nolan N-102 helmet.  I was looking at using J&M Bluetooth Wireless Helmet Headsets (web link  www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=30 ).  The way I can envision how it would work is as follows:
After starting the Motor Cycle / Sidecar (I own a Ural Gear-Up Sidecar) I would pick a waypoint that I want to go too, launch the browser, type in the XM radio stations web address, put in My user name and password in, pick the music that I wished to listen too, get on the Sidecar with My Wife (She would have a Wireless Headset as well) and Off we would go.  A call would come in and either rider could answer it (Phone cuts off the audio for everything else: Primary).  She would end the call and tell Me Via the intercom who it was (Intercom would cut off Music and GPS Voice Prompts: Secondary).  She gets off the phone and a GPS Voice Prompt tells Me turn right ( GPS Prompts cut off Music audio).  If there is a weather alert it would cut off the GPS Prompts and Music audio.  And that is how I see using this product.

  • GPS listener issue

I have a simple GPS demo program on BB 8830 on VerizonWireless. Somehow location listener was not invoked. The following are the code samples. If I have VZ Navigator, it could get location update. Does the application need to be signed by Verizon. The application has already been signed by RIM. It runs pretty well while VZ Navigator is also running at the same time. I wonder what made difference when VZ Navigator is not running. Any tips areappreciated.
I added some code for debugging. LocationListener.locationUpdated was called once. But location.isValid() returned fal

  • BB 8830 vs. BB 8820

I currently have (and love!) my BB 8830. Due to poor network coverage I am looking to change service providers. The competition offers the 8820 model.
Is there any real difference between them other than perhaps the "language" it speaks (TDMA,CDMA,GSM, etc.)?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The two only real differences are that the 8820 will have WiFi, and the GPS will not be disabled (IF it was on your previous carrier).

  • GPS icon gone

I have a Blackberry World Edition (8300) with Bell. I have been using the GPS function on a $3.50 for 24 hour use occasionally. It works beautifully, but last weekend in Savannah, I suddenly lost the icon for the GPS function. Can anyone suggest what I do now?

Bell charges to use the GPS???  GPS is a passive receiver that picks up the info direct from the satellites, the only thing that should have to come from Bell is the maps to plot it on.
I have an 8830 from Telus, my GPS doesn't have it's own icon, it is just a menu option when I use the BlackBerry maps application.  Maybe Bell updated their version of the app to do the same?

  • Error while downloading. message on E71 GPS USA Ma...

“Error while downloading” message on E71 with updated GPS USA Maps
I’m sure I’m not the only one having this problem but I recently updated my maps on my Straight Talk Nokia E71. The phone says I have map download V 3.03 10wk bo4 Mw Open GL LM MN, Map version 0.1.25.114.and I’m using Nokia Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23. After I installed V3.03, I installed it and download the 1.46GB USA map file and the three turn by turn files. But when I first started the GPS app I started getting the following error “Error while downloading”(This is on phone only)
I have tried to factory reset the phone, re-format the 8GB memory card, remove City data and GF files and even unloaded OVI Suite and reload it. But every time I select GPS app and start to find places or my position, I get "Error while downloading" message. I’m new to this phone and didn’t get a respectable book from Straight Talk. So I don’t know much about this phone or Nokia OS. What is this error and how do I fix it. Also when I try to sync from the phone I get the response "system error". Ovi suite on the PC says I have downloaded all the USA maps and English voice  with street names. Please help I’m at a lost.
    Computer specs
I am running Win-Vista, with a Broadband connection. 3 GB Ram, 2 gig Pentium dual core.
Tran’s flash card has plenty room left on card over 5 gigs left.
If I need to delete a file on the phone please tell me the exact file name because I’m not sure which one to remove from the apps folder.
    Solved!

    Welcome to the forum!
Whilst easy for me to say as keep very little data on device, I would suggest backup essential data then delete E:\cities + ,qf file followed by resetting device to "Out of box" state by keying in #7370# then 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself). At this point you would need to open OVI Maps application on device to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure on memory card for device to be recognised by OVI Suite > Maps to re-download your regional mapping.

  • Network based and a-gps, data use tests

i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
    i called nokia tech support,
    their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
    they were the worst.
    i emailed nokia tech support.
    my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
    the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that,  A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.
    test 1:
    i enabled:
    integrated gps
    network based
    assisted gps
    opened maps,
    set maps to be offline,
set default internet access point to my home wlan network,
    closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
    opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
    test 2:
    now i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs
    i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
    i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
    test 3:
    i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs.
    enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
    test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
    exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
    turned on phone,
    cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
    so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.

A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.
If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers.

  • 8830 Lock-ups

My 8830 has been locking-up at least once a day, everyday this week.  The indicator light turns solid red the screen goes black.  You can't do anything with it.  I have to hard shut it down by holding the power button down for awhile.  Usually twice before it will finally shutdown.  Then have to power it up again.
It started to do this a little over a month ago, but then I did an software update which I thought fixed it.  But now it's doing it again.
Anyone else have this problem or a possible solution to fix it?

I've had an 8703e since January. It began rebooting on my on its own. It could be in the holster, sitting on the table, or in my hand being used. It did not matter. the only trends I noticed were: It seemed to do it in the evening and around 9pm CST, this is when I was texting. That stopped being a trend after a few weeks and it was doing it everyday sometimes more than once.
I turned the phone into Verizon in February and a brand new one was sent to me. It started rebooting after several weeks and it has become more frequent lately (April). It is rare that I am using the BB so I dont beileve it has anything to do with an application. I suspect some reset signal is being sent or a system check is executed causing it to go into a reboot.
The odd thing I have noticed is that there are blogs concerning several models that are all reporting this automatic reboot. That leads me to suspect it is something with the BB server or a hacker related issue?????

  • IPhone 6 location services/gps not working

Anyone else have an issue with iPhone 6 location services/gps not working? I have had it happen to me twice where it stopped working for good 7 or 8 hours and then all of sudden it starts working again. For example, directions don't work, every time I open Apple Maps it will say "Cannot determine location", then when I press the location icon on the bottom left, it will try to search again and have an approximate location but not exact, where as the iPad that I have right next to it is able to pin point the exact location. Sometimes the location circle is pulsing blue sometimes its gray. If I am driving and have tracking on it won't track, and so on.  I have tried to setup the phone as new without restoring the backup, when it stopped working with no luck, it still didn't work. I went and restore it back from backup and few hours later it started to work again. This has happened twice now since I got the phone last Friday.

Check your "Privacy" settings on your iPhone see what apps are using your location.

  • GPS issue please help me please

    Hi guys,
Well i know there are several forms for GPS issue but i cant find the right one for me...Please guys help me if u can.
I have N95 8 GB with GPS activated for Middle East Dubai....
Now the issue is this that before i was used to connect very quickly say about 10 minutes but right now i mean as of last couple of weeks its taking hell of time indeed not connecting at all...I place my mobile and my frnds mobile at same place but mine is not connecting at all...his mobile connects like in minute or so....please can u guys help me...my mobile is rarely used for 3 months...
Do i need to change some settings....If satellite is not available it sudnt connect to my frnds same mobile v20....but it connects to him not to mine....

First thing you do is to run GPS Data in connectivity and see if the phone achieves GPS lock any faster than now.
Secondly, run Nokia Maps, Goto Options>About and tell us the version you have. It should be accross the top of the screen.

  • 8830..Moving e-mail messages from Inbox to other folder

On my 8830...When I move e-mail messages from my Inbox to a different folder (under Inbox), they disappear totally from my laptop e-mail rather than mirroring what I did on my BlackBerry.  On the flip side, if I move messages from my Inbox to another folder on my laptop, it does mirror on my BlackBerry.  My e-mail is Outlook 2003, running on my company's Microsoft Exchange Server.  Please help.

Since you have folders under your Inbox, I can only assume you're on a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) setup receiving your Corporate email.  If that's not the case, I can't figure out how you got folders under your Inbox, and have NO IDEA how you're getting the results you're getting as BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) email accounts can't have folders!
You most likely don't have reconciliation enabled for the folders you're moving your email to.
Go into Messages, hit the [Menu] button and select Options --> Email Settings.  Hit the [Menu] button and select Folder Redirection.
You should see your Mailbox at the top with a + to the left of it.  Highlight that line, hit [Menu] --> Expand to display the main folders under your Mailbox.  Your Inbox should appear with a Box next to it either checked or filled in.
Highlight Inbox, and again hit [Menu] --> Expand to display the folders under your Inbox.  All the folders under your Inbox, and the boxes are probably unchecked or not "filled in".  Scroll to the folders you want reconciled with your BlackBerry and hit [Space] to check or fill the box next to it.  Use [Menu] --> Expand if there's a + to the left of the box to expand subfolders.
Once all the folders you want reconciled are checked or filled, hit [Esc] and save.
Now your email won't dissappear when you move it!  You should also notice in the Messages list that email in folders other than your Inbox have a folder icon rather than an Envelope icon.
And before you ask...  The BlackBerry does NOT SYNCHRONIZE, it Reconciles.  Email is pushed to the device ONCE, and only changes to the status of messages are transmitted after that.  Moves will only be reflected after you've turned Reconciliation on for a given folder.  BTW - emails you moved that disappeared should have been in your Deleted Items folder.
Reconciliation rather than Synchronization saves enormously on data transmission ($) as well as Battery life.  Believe me - we have both BlackBerries (Big Wigs only) and Windows Mobile (the rest of the 25,000 peons) devices at my company, and the most common complaint about the Windows devices is battery life, and HUGE costs when the device is overseas!
