BB Curve 8320 OS 4.5 hangs periodically, makes the phone unusable

Hi there,
I have a T-Mobile Curve 8320 running OS 4.5 whcih I updated from the web on my laptop, and installed to the BB device via a USB cable. I also am running the latest BB desktop software, 4.7.
I'm having hanging issues where a clock icon appears on the screen and makes the BB impossible to use for several minutes. This happens several times throughout the day and is very frustrating.
I do not use a media card. I am, however, using Google's synch software for my calendar. I wonder if that's causing the hang.
I went to Options/About and see this:
BlackBerry 8320
smartphone (EDGE, Wi-Fi)
v4.5.0.81 (Platform 2.7.0.78)
Cryptographic Kernel v3.8.5.32a
Micro Edition Configuration: CLDC-1.1
Micro Edition Profile: MIDP-2.0
Micro Edition JTWI Version: 1.0
Micro Edition Media Version: 1.1
Micro Edition PIM Version: 1.0
Micro Edition File Version: 1.0
Micro Edition Bluetooth Version: 1.1
Micro Edition Location Version: 1.0.1
Micro Edition Security and Trust Services (APDU) Version: 1.0
WLAN Version: 2.3.0.74
If you can help me solve this hanging issue, I'd be very grateful.

Low Memory.  4mb file free is severely lacking. You need upwards of 15mb file free.
First thing? Check the File Free at Options > Status, what is the number at File Free? Now, remove the battery of your device, hold a minute, replace and reboot. What is the File Free now?

My Curve 8320 is less than two weeks old. In the last 2 days it has started "timing out" periodically, going to the white screen with timer hourglass, takes several minutes, then when I hit any key I have to enter my password and it starts up again.  Any idea as to what causes this and how I can stop it?   I have noticed the red SOS icon has been active or at least a few of the times it has happened, could this be the cause?

  • How do I create a repeating curved pattern? I'm trying to make the grooves in tires.

I'm working on a logo and I'm trying to create the tread marks on a tire. I'm having difficulties because of the tire is round and I don't know how to create a repeating shape with the right spacing and alignment on a circle.
I hope this makes sense, I'm still quite new to everything. Let me know if I can help clarify anything!

    Mallory,
An easy way to do it would be to (View>Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) With the Ellipse Tool (ClickHold the Rectangle Tool and see the options fly out) Alt/Option click the centre of the tire path (Smart Guides say center), then set the Width and Height high enough to make it outside the outer rim of the tire path, then remove Fill and Stroke;
    2) With the Selection Tool ShiftClick the circle from 1) and then the tread mark, and Ctrl/Cmd+G to Group them;
    3) Effect>Distort & Transform>Transform, setting Rotation to 360/N where N is the total number of tread marks, and setting Copies to one less (N - 1);
To get rid of the circles, and to have actual tread marks:
    4) Select the Group and Object>Expand Appearance;
    5) With the Direct Selection Tool ClickDrag over the circles and press Delete twice.
That will leave you with all the tread marks in a Group.

  • Blackberry curve 8320 spinning hourglass forever end ever

    I have a BB curve 8320, version 4.5.0.81
I have visited Tmobile, they replaced the SIMM card.  I have a 4gb memory card, yet my phone is constantly in the "spinning hour glass mode" and unable to use.  I thougth perhaps it was something to do with service in the Austin TX area, but it happened  the entire week I was in Colorado and California.  This makes the phone useless--what to do?
The only solution I have found is to remove and reinsert the battery but this is a  pain and soemtimes it does not work.  My phone is spinnign right now!
And yes, I do a quickpull on it nightly as suggested by T mobile.

and 2206859bytes translates into roughly 2.1MB which isn't alot and may be leading to the problem itself. I would recommend cleaning out some memory on your device, after deleting some of your unused files, cache/cookies, old memos, old texts, anduseless apps... pull your battery and re-check your memory. and see if that helps aswell.
Divide your Bytes by 1024 twice and thats how many MB (roughly) you have

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
As a user-to-user community, no one here can answer your question with any level of authority whatsoever. BlackBerry provides zero front line support to end users, including warranty...all support starts with the carriers, authorized resellers, and authorized service centers, all who can escalate cases into BlackBerry at no charge to the end user.
So, your escalation path is not here, in these forums. Rather, it is through your service center and/or place of purchase...even if they may have so far been unhelpful. You have no free path by which to bypass them, and should be escalating to their management levels.
There is something called incident support, but it costs to just ask the initial question, since you are bypassing the contract you signed upon purchase. If you wish to investigate that, you can review it here:

  • Curve 8320 corrupts OS periodically and then cannot boot (blinking LED only)

I have a T-Mobile BB Curve 8320 that I've had for about 9 months, and I have what appears to be a recurring problem.
Three times now, the phone has corrupted its OS, and it will not boot. Each time it does it, the symptoms are first the phone is non responsive, and just shows the spinning hourglass cursor. The last time it did it while in the Mail app, which is the one I use almost exclusively. The phone appears to lock up, showing the wait cursor indefinitely. This time I waited a half hour, and it was clear that it wasn't coming back. So I pushed the power button, and it shut down the phone. But then when I tried to turn it back on, the screen never came up, and it just blinked the red LED "forever." (It was about 18-20 hours before I got around to trying to reload it.)  The first time this happened was when the phone was running the OS version it shipped with, which I think was 4.3, but I don't recall. But now it has done it twice while running 4.5.0.81, which is the OS distribution T-Mobile makes available for the Curve.
The first two times it did it, I used the application loader to wipe the device and reload the OS. When in this state, BB desktop manager doesn't see the device since it can't boot. But if you click through to the application loader, you can get it to load. (Or you can run the application loader outside of BB desktop manager)
This time, the application loader started up, offered the choice of what to load, and then proceeded into the next phases. Erasing the device succeeds, as does the next phase where it loads the OS. But then it gets to where it is loading application modules, with a progress bar for each module and one for the overall progress. It got halfway through the overall progress, and failed with an "unspecified error", suggesting to try again. I tried it three times, and it failed the same way each time.
After calling T-Mobile, they bounced me over to RIM, and the first guy had me go through the app loader again with the same result. When he started pursuing USB connectivity issues, I asked to speak to someone else. (There are other devices on this system, both mass storage and input, and none of them ever show connectivity issues. )
The second tech had me rerun the application loader, but this time only select the core OS, leaving out all the apps. This succeeded, and then he had me rerun it, loading the rest of the applications. This also succeeded.
But the problem I still have is this. There is no explanation why the phone corrupts itself every couple of months, or why loading the OS and the applications in one step failed to work _repeatedly_.  I believe the device has a bad memory address, and the two step OS load simply danced around it. And it is that which is causing the phone to corrupt its own OS to the point that it cannot boot.
The tech tried to pass of the corruption due to loading third party applications, and while I can accept that a rogue application can corrupt memory locations that it has the ability to write to, I don't know if the BB OS/device uses any form of protected memory, or if apps are essentially unrestrained. The only third party applications I load on this are the Google app, with Gmail, and Opera Mini.
To be honest, if the BB OS is that fragile that I can't even load these two applications on it, I'll be trading it for a different email capable phone.
Anyway, I'm looking to find if anyone else has a phone that repeatedly gets corrupted so it can't boot, and requires a complete reload. Also, is there anyway to test the memory on the phone? I'm going to call T-Mobile back and try to get them to swap my phone, because I can't afford to spend three hours on the phone with tech support every couple of months when my phone dies.
    thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Our cases sound a bit different. I seldom use Desktop Manager, as I sync through BES. I do use it for backup though.
But over the time my phone corrupting itself has happened, I've upgraded from BB OS 4.3 to 4.5, which required an update to Desktop Manager, and following that I upgraded to a new computer. So I've changed computers, BB Desktop software, and BB OS software, and the problem has happened across all of those changes.
You should have been able to restore the OS even if it was corrupt. Desktop Manager won't recognize the device if it won't boot, but application loader will still find it. The first two times I did it, I used instructions basically like this: http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry?page=4
But since then I've found I can just access application loader via BB Desktop Manager and do the same thing. I did notice when my OS reload kept failing this last time, that using application loader directly showed more of the failure message. It still wasn't anything useful, but when I reran the reload via Desktop Manager, I recognized the error was the same, but noted that I didn't see all of the output of the standalone application loader.

  • OS 4.5- Device hangs periodically

    Hello,
I just upgraded to the Rogers version of the OS 4.5 for the Curve (8310)... Now the device appears hang or freeze for up to 10 minutes at a time... Periodically the device screen hangs or freezes and unless you pull the battery there is no way to get the screen to respond... If you wait about 10 minutes the device will start again... This appears to happen for most applications (IE I can be listening to music and the device will stop for about 10 minutes after playing 2-3 songs and then continue playing.. It also freezes on the main screen when the device is locked)... It has not frozen yet while I'm actually typing an e-mail... It almost appears that the device is doing something in the back ground like scanning a SIM card or responding to some OS request...
I had noted from one of the other forums that this could be due to a SIM card so I reformatted the card and reloaded the music and files back to the blackberry...
Any ideas on what this could be and how to stop it...
    Thanks

I am betting you upgraded the OS to 4.5, and you have a Media Card in the device, and the OS is constantly rescanning the Media Card. Common issue for a few after an OS 4.5 upgrade..
Remove your Media Card, first, reboot and your BB should be fine.
Then read this on how fix the Media Card (courtesy of John Clark, another expert here in the Forum)
    1. Removed the Media Card from the device and put in a card reader. This makes the rest of the process much quicker. However, you can do it with the card in the device.
    2. Copy the entire contents of the card to your PC.
    3. Put the card back in the device and go to Options >Media Card >Menu key >Format Card. This will wipe the card and reformat it. (if using a card reader remove the card and put it back in the reader.)
    4. Now copy back JUST the media to the device. Do NOT copy back any "BBthumbs.dat" files or any system files. I went through the entire folder and deleted every .dat file before copying the contents of the music folder and pictures folders back to the device. The device will recreate these files. Also, I didn't copy the actual "music" folder but rather just copied the contents and pasted in the card's \Blackberry\music folder. Do this for each folder.
    5. When finished put the card back in the device and try the Media App again. It should scan for music. If you have lots of music it can take 5-10 minutes. During scanning you can open the Music app and you should be able to see the songs moving around in the list as the device scans
If after transferring all your files back you still get a stuck scanning bar or device reboots then you have a conflicting file on the card. I've seen video files do this but it could be a music file too or (less likely) a picture file. Remove all the files you transferred and see if the reboots stop. Then add back each folder one at a time to see if you can narrow down to the folder that's causing it. Once you find the folder then you can narrow down to a particular file.

  • BB Curve 8320 unexpected button behaviour

    Hi Community
I now own a BB Curve 8320 which arrived on March 7 th 2010 with OS v4.2.
Having previously & successfully upgraded the OS on my BB curve 8310 which has an expensive screen problem, I downloaded OS v4.5  for the BB Curve 8320.
    I used this download: 8320EastAsia_PBr4.5.0_rel108_PL2.7.0.78_A4.5.0.81_Voda_Australia
Everthing appeared to work fine; the OS upgrade completed successfully and before & after reloading the data from Outlook I could access the menu via Menu key & do everything I needed.
However, after some time of operation (i.e. over 1 or more hours), randomly the unit will not display the menu when I press the Menu Key and I can't answer calls by pressing the green phone button.
Instead, this key and a few others will produce strange characters (e.g. Yi )  in those applications that can accept text, or not respond at all.
I have tried to help myself with this problem by doing the following one by one and testing after:
    Battery Pulls.
Hold alt, then hold right shift, then hit delete.
Reloading the OS after wiping with JL_Cmder v1.9.1
I read on either this forum or crackberry that I should consider moisture under the keyboard, and so proceeded to remove the battery, and SIM and SD cards then proceeded to hairdryer the unit for a brief period.
RESULT = Everything works again for a short while (i.e. a few hours), then it will repeat the above behaviour.
I kinda figure there is a simple BB Curve 8320 fix or setting change that I am missing.
The 8310 was rock solid on performance.... and truthfully I miss it.
Please put me out of my misery.
    Blessed Regards,

The directions I posted above work just fine.
You don't need a ziplock bag, although it won't hurt.
After several days, just blow off any rice dust off the device and power up, and keep your fingers crossed. You don't need vacuums and all that.
Don't make a simple process complicated
Good luck, I suspect you will be perfectly fine.

  • How can I transfer all my data from my Pearl to my new Curve 8320?

Help! I have a Mac and have downloaded every bit of software/manual/information/help that I can find and still can't figure out how to transfer all my data from my dying Pearl 8100 to my new Curve 8320. Any suggestions?

    Hi Vanessa,
There are two ways to solve your problem.
    1) Configure the birthday and anniversary events you have created for last year so that they repeat every year on the same date.
    2) Enter the birthdays in your Address Book for the corresponding contacts — create the contacts if you don't have them in your Address Book yet — and then tell iCal to display the birthday calendar.
    Hope this helps

Thank you.

to use video you need an upgrade. The name is handheld device software OS. I believe you have 4.2. 4.5 is required.
You have to wait for TMobile to release the 4.5 OS.

Wireless carriers disfavour that but you can install device os for your device model but from another wireless carrier.
Check this link: Blackberry OS FAQ
Find a carrier who provides device OS with asian language support download OS package and install on desktop computer.
After that delete Vendor.xml from installed files.
Connect your device to desktop computer and run BB Desktop Manager/App Loader to update the device OS.

I recently got a replacement bb Curve 8320.  I had a media card in my old phone and when I put it in my new phone it kept rebooting my cell phone every 1-2 minutes.  I went and bought a 4GB Media Card, had the guy at T-Mobile Format it and then went home and placed all of the photos, videos, music and purchased ring tones from my old media card to my new one.  When I placed the new Media Card into my phone it keeps doing the same thing.  I get the hour glass and then the phone reboots over and over again.  Someone please help!!!!  The phone has been wiped out and all applications have been updated, so I am not sure why this is happening.
    Very FRUSTRATED!,
    Thanks,
    Jes

its also best when installing the 4.5 software to your BB, that the media card is removed from the BB during the installation. It has been known to cause these problems. Once the software has been fully reinstalled, you can then reinsert the card.
If your card was in for a previous installtion, best to format the card within the BB again.
    babylabes
In my very first post I gave you directions on how to locate the exact version installed on your BB. It is very useful information to be able to help you. Also why do you plug the card into your PC to put files on it, you can plug your BB into your PC and transfer them to it that way. and in your case I would follow the instructions of making sure the .dat files are not being copied over, and make sure you dont have anything that is not media content. something you are transferring is corrupted. dont copy the folders over. Copy content in the folder to the new empty folder on the BB. (reformat while in the BB first so you have the folders)
