BB doesn't work unless phone is off the hook.

I've had problem with Broadband for years, it goes through bad patches and eventually gets better. It's currently in a bad way again, days of no connection at all and at the moment off and on services lasting minutes or hours. It's been worse in the past but I've never tried getting help from the people on this forum before.
So today for example Internet was working maybe 30 minutes (tends to be potluck) then couldn't connect. I do what has become second nature, dial 1471 and leave phone off the hook. This tends to get the Internet going again for 20 minutes.
Last time, a few mouths ago, Internet stopped working for a week, then even the trick of using the phone stopped working. As there was a lot of crackling on the line I reported a line fault. Unfortunately on the day the engineer came the line was quiet. Internet was still down so he did something along the lines of increasing the voltage on the phone line. A few days later Internet was mostly stable so I didn't pursue things with BT.

There's some hissing and crackling every few seconds. I've heard a lot worse but there's some noise.
Maybe another engineer would make more of an effort and get this fixed, maybe there's someone I can call to get voltage turned up, I'm not sure what's best any suggestions welcome.
P.S. I've been using the Test Socket for last few days. I'm also wondering if the line fault is, say in the loft where Phone line comes into the house, do I have to pay?

Your problem is being most likely being caused by a corroded joint or crimp connecter, probably in the street cabinet or the pole (if you are fed from one).
The corrosion creates a high resistance connection and impairs the broadband and the phone. This manifests itself as crackling on the phone.
When the phone is off the hook, it allows current to flow through the corroded joint. This breaks down the high resistance connection, and allows a better broadband connection.
This does not last long, as once the current flow stops, when you replace the phone, the resistance soon increases again, and you are back to square one.
There were a large number of crimp connectors which were used on the external network, which allowed moisture ingress, causing corrosion. Many of these have now been replaced, but there are probably thousands of them out there in the external network, many of which, give no trouble.
The replacements are filled with a gel, which prevents moisture ingress, and these are now fitted as a matter of course, when noise faults are reported.

    We were unable to connect to the internet but miraculously got online every time I picked up the phone to call BT so I didn't complete the call.
    It now transpires that the only way to remain connected to the internet is to leave the phone off the hook.
    How do I fix this?  I've already tried two different ADSL filters but the problem remains.

    Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

    I get that it's a safety issue and battery drain both, to not allow it unless plugged in but does that mean Google ("Ok Google") doesn't care about our safety?
    It's poor implementation I think. Battery drain isn't at all horrible on Android when it's always listening and I'm not starting that argument because i like iPhone and Apple just as well but it seems like there could have been other battery saving things to disable other than one that's very handy regardless of having to be plugged in.

    Wow- thanks Jim! I removed the case and voila... it worked. Knock on wood that you solved my problem with such an incredibly simple solution. I'll find out where this proximity sensor is and make sure my case does not interfere with it.

    So this morning i woke up and for some reason my power/lock button on my iphone 4s doesn't work, but that's not the biggest problem because there are work around's. the real weird thing is that now my phone just decides its going to shut down. It will randomly bring up the screen to swipe to shut down even when im not even holding my phone. Unfortunately my phone is out of warranty so I am getting ready to do a restore but other than that i have no idea what else i might be able to do.

    We can't know if there's a "fixture" because we can't examine your phone.  But Apple can.  Make a Genius Bar appointment and get your phone evaluated.

    iPad 2, Since upgrading to iOS 8.0.2  the cellular signal indicates I do not have a SIM card. Monday spent hours on the phone with Apple support, backed up my iPad, reset all settings, reloaded my iPad and it still tells me I don't have a SIM card. Tuesday went to AT&T and got a new SIM card on the advice of apple support. It worked perfect until this morning and the NO SIM CARD notice reappeared. Never ever had any problem until the upgrade. I find it inexcusable that Apple refuses to address the issues they caused, iOS 8.0.2 is the Ebola of iPad 2 world.     I am having a very difficult time with an old Indigo iMac (slot-loading). The symptoms are as follows:
    Blinks between Smiley Face and ? on start up
    Keyboard doesn't work unless in the Developer mode(? mode with the white screen and some command options. I think it's developer mode...)
    I do not know what to do really. Even using alternative methods to try and get the computer to boot such as hooking up another drive from a different computer to it via an IDE to USB and trying to get it to boot, but to no avail. Is there anything I can do in the Developer mode that would help?

    If it is a 333MHz model, it is not a Slot-Loading model; it is one of the last of the tray loader models (designated as the Five Flavors models), as indicated in the right-hand column for that model (fourth one down) in the KBase article you linked to, Article #58669.
    In that case it is not USB bootable.
    Is there a way I can possible change the start up disk through Open Firmware?
    Not that I'm aware of - Open firmware is not that flexible.
    Have you tried booting it to an OS Install CD, one valid for that model? Such would be the original Software Install CD that came with it (OS 8.5.1), or any retail OS 8.6 or OS 9 Install CD. If you can get it to boot to a CD, you can change or reset the boot volume using Startup Disk control panel.
    Also, if you can get it to boot to an OS Install CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD - let it have a look at the drive, and repair whatever it can.
    While booted to the CD, take a look at the System Folder on the hard drive - does it show the Mac OS glyph superimposed on the folder's icon, or is the folder icon plain? If it is plain, that System Folder is no longer blessed, which is relatively easy to fix.
    Note - when using keyboard startup commands, for most of them be sure you press the key(s) early enough, usually about the time the startup chime sounds; and keep them held down until you are sure the command has been accepted or been invoked.

    Plugins usually are installed externally to Firefox. However, you can disable them in Firefox so that Firefox does not use them.
    SearchReset is supposed to automate the task of resetting certain preferences, but you still can edit them manually if necessary.

    Usually it works to choose your preferred search engine from the drop-down. To remove an unwanted search engine plugin, usually the Manage Search Engines... choice at the bottom of the drop-down takes care of it.

    There might be another way to hijack that search box; I think some of the other frequent responders probably are more familiar with it than I am.

    First lets assume you battery is completely or almost completely drained.
    Plug the iPad into the charger that came with it and plug that into a known good wall outlet. Leave it alone for at least an hour. Then, while it is still plugged in reset the iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. If the iPad starts and seems to be ok let it continue to Harte until the battery is fully charged.
    If this doesn't solve the problem I suggest having an Apple technician take a look at your iPad. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

    Try rebooting first.  Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds (keep holding past the swipe to shutdown bar if it appears) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart.  See if that solves this for you.......

    Just thought that I'd report that I've decided on my solution.
    It seems that just making do with what I can find on the US store is the easiest and perhaps also the best way of going about it. All other methods mean trouble. I'm lucky that China hasn't outright blocked the US store, as they HAVE blocked iTunes music store in China already (something about a song about Tibet caused them to block the store entirely).
    So yeah, just going to deal with it I guess. I should be grateful I'm getting anything at all, considering the country I'm in. Still, I just feel so ripped off sometimes when I pay for expensive devices and I can't even get much out of them do to my region. iPhones cost around $700 in China because there's no company like AT&T that you can just sign a contract with to get one, so you have to pay up-front for the phone, and get less features out of it in the end. Makes buying smart phones look like a waste of time and money sometimes, since you can't use the device to do what it was built to do due to censorship and not having any content for your region (though they do have a lot of Chinese apps that I can't use due to not knowing Chinese).

    I restarted the computer, but the same issue happens again. When I move my mouse over some object or tool, it doesn’t come active at all (only some of the tools works) When I try to change “site properties”, I can’t choose tablet or phone mode or even I can’t select the checkboxes, only thing what I can do is change the numbers (high and width) . After all the main problem is that I can’t select some of the items or functions by mouse, but only by the keyboard.
