  • Cannot open pages while connected with AEBS ?

I only have a dialup connection through AOL. Finally bought old style AEBS with modem so i could connect with my iBook at home. Seem to have it configured to network with my G5 ok. Got it to connect to AOL, i'm online. My problem is i can't open any pages. I usually use Firefox and it opens fine but after that i can't access any websites, same thing with Safari. Every thing works fine as long as i'm not connected through Airport. Where should i look to remedy this?

    Hi Robert!
See if this AOL Internet access requires an update when
    using AirPort helps.
If you are seeing an asterisk * when trying to
    navigate to webpages, try this;
A fix for this is to change the modem scripts AOL is
    using.
Sign Off, but don't quit AOL.
When signed OFF of AOL, but with the Sign-On screen
open, click: SET UP > Expert Set UP.
Click : Add TCP Connection to bring up new
    dialog box.
Pull down the menu in Advanced Options - Connection
    Scripts:
Change the connection script to TCP (DO NOT
    use Airport)
Click Okay and close all windows.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for your help, tried everything you suggested. Unfortunately nothing changed.

  • Modem 300 compatibility with Mac Plus

I have an Apple Modem 300 that I use with my Apple //c.  It connects to the Internet (in some ways) just fine.  I have a Mac Plus 4MB and I was wondering if the Modem 300 specifically could be compatible with the modem.  If so, also please tell me how I can.  I already have Netscape installed on my Mac Plus.

For the cable connection, the following article could perhaps be of interest.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA33629
However, the modem speed is extremely low. It would of course be much better to use a faster modem (something like 14400 bps). Almost any PC-style (DB-25F port) modem can be used with a Macintosh Plus through a Mac modem cable (DB-25M to MiniDIN-8M).
I did not know that it was possible to use a Netscape web browser on a Macintosh Plus (with an external hard drive) computer. There are a few alternatives that work, such as MacWeb (under System 7). An old version of Eudora can (if SMTP authentication is not required) be used for email. You would also need MacTCP and an appropriate PPP program. For details, see the web pages below.

  • 'Ol UFO Style Airport Extreme and Ancient Computers & OS

My tiny network= PowerPC G5 and iBookG4, both OS Tiger 10.4.11, and the mushroom/ ufo style Airport Extreme.
I can't tell if this Airport is on its' last leg, the signal has been diminishing and erratic the past few days, always worse at night.
I have done the soft and hard reset of the Airport, following the timing and sequence, Modem, Airport and Computer, waiting 10-15 mins in between.
The Airport shows full power, middle light constant green, the right light indicating the the base is communicating via the lan port is flashing and green. The left light indicating the base is communicating via airport is the one that appears to be failing. After a reset is flashes a little bit, then dims to a very low glow which remains constant.
I haven't had great signal strength in the past few days, and strangely it gets worse as the night wears on, making me think this has something to do with the my provider (Time Warner). I'm hard wired to the internet now, and it appears to be ok, not great speed, but it never is due to ancient cable wiring.
I have gotten the dim shade and "Restart Your computer" freeze on both computers after my last attempts to connect to my network which shows in the list, but with no signal.
I live in a mulit story building with lots of wireless, I've reset the channel to one that no one else is on.
Any thoughts are welcome and thanks in advance.

... Mine went automatically to Channel 7, so I guess that good?
If you set your AEBS's wireless channel to "automatic", it is supposed to choose the best channel it finds. Apple doesn't publish the algorithm by which it accomplishes that, but I surmise that if your AEBS chose that channel, things are probably as good as they're going to get until you can upgrade your equipment to 802.11n.
The kernel panics you describe are almost always due to some hardware incompatibility - the culprit is usually memory or some USB device. You can isolate the cause by removing or substituting suspect memory modules and USB devices. The increased fan speed is likely related to whatever caused the kernel panic, and will go away once you solve that problem. It also happened to me once in the distant past while I was trying to connect wirelessly peer-to-peer with a Windows computer. So, it's possible using Airport Utility with a flaky wireless link may have caused it, though I can't explain how.
Everything is going at once it seems.
Computers, at least as far as my experience goes with Apple's equipment, don't degrade gradually. Hard disks, optical drives, things with moving parts sometimes give you some warning before they fail completely. Power supplies usually fail catastrophically. All those things can be replaced. In general though, your computers and AEBS should keep on working until they becomes functionally obsolete.

  • Extending WiFi of ATT 2Wire modem w/ Apple Express modems?

We have residential / small business internet via AT&T DSL. We run a phone line into a 2Wire (Gateway 2701 HG-B) modem/router (804.11g/n) which provides internet connectivity for an older Mac via an ethernet cable and via wireless for my MacBook (n) when I am w/in 25 - 40 feet of the 2Wire.
But I use my MacBook mostly about 95 feet away in a separate building (ie the garage) and that is where I really need the internet connection. Sometimes I can connect to the 2Wire when I am in the garage but very rarely.
Can I buy an Apple Express Modem and place it half way to the garage as to extend wireless coverage out to the garage? I think even buying 2 Express modems would be cheaper and much easier than running cat 5 cable in this case because of the building obstacles.
Or would another brand of modem be better for this style of daisy-chaining (without the chain!) ?? Someone recommended the Zyxel Adsl2 Gateway 802.11n modem for Daisy-chaining. Should I buy a replacement for the 2Wire modem to be sure this approach will work?
    TIA, Allan

Can I buy an Apple Express Modem and place it half way to the garage as to extend wireless coverage out to the garage?
Sorry, but that won't work as most non-AirPort routers are not WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Or would another brand of modem be better for this style of daisy-chaining (without the chain!) ??
Any modem that is Ethernet-capable can be used. In this case, you can connect one AirPort directly to this modem by Ethernet, and then, extend it wireless range with another AirPort.

  • Huwaei mobile broadband USB modem

    Hi,
I did a search but I couldn't really find a topic relating to this issue directly; I recently purchased a mobile broadband contract, and they supplied me with a Huwaei USB modem, and it has been near useless, disconnecting and slow, with all graphics compressed and low quality (I assume as a kind of speed optimiser).. and these are all the things I can live with really, to be expected of dial up PPP style connections unfortunately (brings back memories!) but it is some other issues that are bugging me:
When I disconnect and directly quit the Huwaei app, I get a kernel panic and an error log on rebooting relating to the mobile device, almost 100% repeatable. If I disconnect, then switch to another app, say even Finder, then back and quit, it is fine! Its a very consistent problem. It seems cause various strange kernel type problems and flakiness, which I've never experienced on this computer before.
It also does this strange thing when it will disconnect, and give me a waiting for PPP termination message, before powering down completely, despite having a full battery. I'm 80% sure my battery is fine, although I am looking into this one.
If any one else has had any probs with mobile broadband, it'd be good to hear what and if/how you found solutions!

Hi. I never had a problem with errors and so forth (as of yet). My problem with the e160 Huwaei usb modem is that it comes and goes. Right now 'sweat as' but in an hour or so I bet its a different story. I usually get 60% good use out of it (functioning properly). I have an old HP laptop running XP(my parentsz) and it runs consistently good on that. Now that laptop is 5 years old. My imacs bearly 2 years. I have XP on parallel's on my imac so I can run both operating programs and still when its bad on leopard it still bad in XP on my imac. But I go to my parents laptop same time, same house and its all good on the HP XP laptop so its not the network. F@#kin weird as. Its just weird how its sweat now and later it will be **** house. Anyone with some answers out there or anyone with the same problem I am dying to find out.

  • Dial-up modem with an iMac

I am running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on an iMac (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM).
I have had a DSL connection since purchasing this computer, but when I moved my current phone line is only rated for 768 Kbps download speed, which is dial-up speed. My internet provider has finally gotten the phone company to admit to this and has recommended I downgrade to dial-up since I am in fact operating at a maximum of 610Kbps anyhow.
They would provide me with an external modem which would connect to the computer using a telephone line with phone-style plug on the modem side and a USB2 at the computer, a specialty product they state that Apple would sell me.  Currently, I use an Ethernet line from the DSL modem to the computer.
My question is:  Can my iMac even use a dial-up connection with an external modem?  If so, does Apple in fact sell such a specialty line or does the connection have to be made through an Ethernet line due to hardware/software constraints?
There is no wireless or satellite option where I live due to building interference.  The building itself is wired for cable, which I do not care to have.  I am willing to simply downgrade to the lowest speed DSL if dial-up is not possible with my iMac.
Thanks for information relevant to making my decision.

@Lanny, you are correct; the maximum speed of 768k was cited by a support tech and may refer to the phone line's native capacity due to distance.  I have decided to downgrade to the lowest DSL option available to me (1.5 Mbps instead of 3.0 Mbps) and retain the capability of having simultaneous phone and internet access, which is not available with dial-up.  My maximum download speed at my current location hovers around 600K.
The source of the difficulty, I suspect, is that the phone company is converting to optical fibers from copper fibers and is pushing their own "blazingly fast" internet product based on fiber optics, rather than DSL with its expensive paired copper lines.  I don't know if the phone company has an additional a means of limiting transmission speeds to thwart their competition, although if I can conceive of this possibility, someone else smarter than me had probably figured out a way to accomplish this 5-10 years ago.  My ISP is gradually building their own fiber optic network to gain independence from the dominant telephone line owner.
Thanks for your reply.  It confirmed my intuition to stick with DSL but at the lowest available speed option.

  • Unable to fax or ad internal modem in tiger 10.4.8

I am attempting to use my fax for the first time in about a year. I go through the steps to set up the internal modem, but it doesn't show up in the "Network Port Configurations" tab under Network in system preferences. Furthermore, when attempting to add a 'fax" in the printer dialogue, there is nothing to select.
Is there a way to reinstall the modem? It seems as if it has gone missing... I have tried several tricks outlined here to make it 're-appear' but they are not working for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, not professing to be an "expert" in this area, I would, nevertheless, be of the mindset that if System Profiler doesn't see your modem, then, as you have postulated earlier, you may have a bad internal connection to the modem board, or the modem is toast.
If you take your computer in to Apple and they diagnose it as a faulty modem board, FWIW, http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/modems.html offers some used internal modems for a couple of different old-school Macs (like mine). A google search on "internal modem" and whatever the style/model of your computer is, should turn up additional sources for internal modems for your computer, should that be the case.

  • Wired network: ProLine G90-6100 DSL modem

I would like to expand from a single connection on my desktop to a wired network throughout my home where I can plug in mutliple computers at the same time, but have an old style, Westell ProLine® G90-6100 DSL modem.   The Westell user manual indicates that I can route up to 253 users with a customer provided Ethernet hub.
So, can I have to replace the Westell ProLine DSL modem, or can I just plug on an Ethernet switch (e.g. an 8-port Leviton, model 47611-8PT) and be all set to go?
    Please advise.   Help!

Except, the IP address results I reported were for when I was still going from a single PC directly to the  ProLine 6100 DSL modem without having added the Ethernet switch.    Should I still be OK once I add the switch and another PC?

  • Verizon Turbo Dsl plan with Westell 6100 modem? Help?

So I have a westell 6100 modem and on the 7th I upgraded my bundle i had 1 Mbps for Internet , verizon homephone freedom essentials, and Directv. Since fios is not available were I live. And my new bundle is Verizon Dsl 7.0-1 Mbps turbo plan, verizon essentials and directv for $115.00. My question is will my modem provison the speed correct? will it still work? Or do I have to buy a new modem? Thanks!.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you have been using the 6100 previously then the modem should sync to the new speed automatically.  If yareou still using an old style flat phone cable from the jack to the modem it may not be capable of the faster speed.  The round tan colored cable which originally was supplied with the modem would be the one to use.  I moved up recently from 3 to the turbo 7.1 via ASDL2plus and found that Verizon at my location has capped the speed at about 5.5.  Their out is to say speeds up to 7.1.

I make the upgrade to the last firmware but don´t works...
We need support for this modem because it’s very common in our market. The ISP Claro, Tigo and Telecom use this model Huawei E160 and that incompatibility makes SRP500 a very unpopular router.
Please, make a new upgrade to support and resolve this particular issue.

We have no immediate plans to integrate this modem with the SRP.

  • Apple modem with Lion

In Lion, if I attempt to connect the Apple modem I bought with this computer (an iMac purchased in 2007, though About This Mac suggests the general style is "5.1 late 2006") I am faced with the message "Unsupported: You cannot use an Apple USB modem with this computer".  For the present, as I still have a Snow Leopard disk and I rarely use the modem apart from sending the very occasional fax, there is no problem. Even so, my next house move will be in a few months, and I know that one tends to spend about a month on dial-up until broadband is released and assigned.
My questions are: (1) Do I need to buy a third-party modem? (2) Is it likely to work?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Yes.

If the maker says it's compatible with Lion, probably.

Modem is not detected message is coming when 6070 is conncted to PC with DKU-5 cable and Nokia PC Suite. Whereas
    other applications are working.

I fixed this ... I found out that you must plug in a usb keyboard.. first in windows 7 64 bit..  .. and while the keyboard is plugged in you must plug in the card reader or barcode scanner or any other usb HID device if the USB device is a "keyboard entry" HID style device.. like a Usb barcode scanner.. or Usb card swipe.....  If you do not plug in a usb keyboard then the Scanner will be recognized as a Unknown device....
everything is working perfectly now that i plugged in a keyboard and then plugged in the scanner..

I recently replaced my cable modem and now my Time Capsule only works with the one Mac Air and not my other devices (another Mac Air, iPad, and iPhone).  Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have gone from a cable router with the TC bridged to a cable modem with no router.. so the first device to connect pick up the IP address. Did the cable company give you the same model?? Check if it is a pure modem or a modem router.. and what the last one was.
Anyway.. you should redo the setup.. do you have any computer with ethernet?? Did you buy a USB to ethernet adapter for one of your airs.. very hard to do setup without ethernet.
Also download the new utility.. with the old style.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to be on Lion.
Redo the setup and make sure you setup correctly to router mode if the cable modem has no router or bridge mode if it is a router.
