Hi acemelhaz,
hi i am new ive had my imac duo about 2 weeks in general im finding it great but when on internet annoying me a little first up i cant play bbc news video weather etc says i dont have mime plugin?
I believe BBC Weather uses the Real Player plugin for its video content. What you need to do is install it, but because it's written for the PowerPC, you'll also need to run Safari under Rosetta for compatibility.
also i cant get mail to receive google mail , it can send but wont receive..
Did you follow Gmail's instructions to the letter?
also some sites with security like when paying a bill wont load up?
How should I put this? Some sites are written with Windows/IE-compatibility in mind, which doesn't necessarily amount to Safari-compatibility. For the time being, as a Mac-user, you'll have to come to terms with the fact that there will be a handful of sites which won't work with Safari. That said, where Safari fails, other browsers such as FireFox, OmniWeb or Camino might in some cases. The trick is to use what works for a given scenario.
Some sites specifically check for your browser's user-agent, refusing access unless it detects what it's looking for. If that is what's happening in this case, then you could try spoofing your browser's ID. Enable the Debug menu by quitting Safari and entering the following line in the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/)
defaults write com.apple.Safari EnableDebugMenu 1
When you open Safari, you should see a 'Debug' menu to the right of 'Help'. Near the bottom of that menu, you should be presented with a 'User Agent' dropdown menu, allowing you to change the browser ID reported. Changing that to 'Windows MSIE 6.0' would be your best bet in most cases.
then next time will, and last of all i can no longer get my hotmail to work with msn messenger can someone advise me please thankyou

  • I want to transfer BBC News videos to my ipod

If you click on the BBC you can watch news item videos in Real Player or Windows Media. They can be saved in .m3u, .rmp, .pls, .wpl or .asx file formats. Can anyone advise the simplest way to transfer and view any of these on the ipod? Is QuickTime Pro suitable?

    Hi,
These files are playlists (I think) so you can't convert them, because basically when you click them, they are a link to the file on the BBC, not the actual news videos, unfortunately.

  • BBC news video outsize display

About two weeks ago when starting a video on the BBC news web site, the image was larger that the window resulting in only part of the picture showing. However after scrolling down to disappear the window and scrolling up again, the image has resized and shows correctly. This is on Safari only, everything works fine on Chrome. Macbook pro 15" with retina display, OSX 10.8.2.

Then start using Chrome as your main and IMHO Only Web Browser.

  • Ipad retina does not play bbc iplayer or bbc news videos

I have a new ipad retina and just today it no longer plays hte videos on the BBC news site nor will it load BBC iplayer.  Any help would be great.  Thanks

Can only offer generic things to try like quitting all apps (double tap on Home, swipe all apps upwards quit), then force-restarting the device (hold down Home and Sleep will screen goes dark and a white Apple logo appears, release and wait). Or check your connectivity to see if something changed (Wi-Fi, cellular).
The BBC doesn't consider us foreigners worthy of the digital pleasures, so no iPlayer for us. But the regular app seems to be working ok:

  • Watching BBC News videos on an Ipad 3

Hi just wondering if anyone can help me out...
I'm not able to watch videos on the BBC News website using the iPad 3. I realise that they are flash videos and the iPad cannot play or download flash...but is there definitely no way around this? The BBC News app is a partial solution as it lets me play videos using the same iPad but there are so many videos in the archives of the main site that I'd love to be able to access.
If anybody has any tips then I'd be really grateful. I guess it's the same situation for all sites that contain flash content...
    Thanks guys

That's great. iSwifter and Puffin both work though the latter seems to have better sound. They are both free too - looks like you have to buy Skyfire and Photon.
    Thank you

  • Unable to open BBC news video

On the BBC website I try to open news clip videos but it informs me I do not have the latest adobe software.  I then download it but it still comes up with the comment 'unable to view as you do not have the latest version of adobe flash'.  I can view the ITN news clips, You Tube and MSN video clips.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi glspaobidos,
Please let me know what OS and browser are you using.

  • BBC News Video not displaying/loading

This is an old topic, but I can find no entry since 2006 have I missed something?
I can view YouTube, ITN any number of Quicktime sites, and I can listen to BBC sound only sites but not stream video content.
Running Safari (through Rosetta) doesn't seem to change anything.
Standalone Real Player looks healthy with a request sent to the BBC but nothing happens until it times out.
This Intel iMac has everything up to date, plug ins are in the root directory library and "block pop up" disabled. I have set Real Player prefs for my internet connection speed within Real's menu.
My connection is via Airport, might this be the problem?
I've read endless twaddle from the BBC which I think suggests OS9 and Real Player 8 or some such, while admitting that their original decision to use Windows Media no longer works. Have I gone into some sort of time warp?
I'm not sure what else to try, or is this a BBC/Mac incompatability?

    Hi,
The file type I get is .ram, on Realplayer never used Flip4mac or WMP.
I've selected all the tabs for media type in Real except Quicktime to no great effect.
Did you allow the prefrences to Quit the browser if not it wouldn't help.

  • Flash-Based BBC h264 Videos Freeze After 8 Seconds

    Hello,
I like to view BBC news videos since March on my new Desktop Windows 7 64 bit Pro system.  For about 2 weeks now, I've been having trouble viewing about half of these videos.  Half play all the way through fine and the other half freeze after 8-10 seconds.  I have a CAT 5e 7 mbit cable modem connection so speed is not an issue.  My Wi-Fi connected Windows 7 Home Premium laptop uses the same router and can play the same videos with no problems.
On my Desktop, this freezing happens on both FireFox 12 and Internet Explorer 9.  I did all the usual things to try to fix the problem.  I cleared the caches on both FF12 and IE9.  Yesterday, I uninstalled both the Adobe Flash FF12 plug-in and IE9 Active-X versions and reinstalled with the latest version, 11,3,300,262.  Today, I upgraded to the latest version, 11,3,300,265.  Nothing has solved the problem.
Here are the specs for the BBC Flash-based player:
    Problem Videos:
    URL:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-18819815
    EMP v.3.1.0.r749603_749269_749444_5
    18819815 | 800kbps | h264 | AK 4.5 (1) | 640x360
    URL:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-18733664
    EMP v.3.1.0.r749603_749269_749444_5
    18733664 | 800kbps | h264 | AK 4.5 (1) | 640x360
    URL:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-18818139
    EMP v.3.1.0.r749603_749269_749444_5
    18818139 | 800kbps | h264 | AK 4.5 (1) | 640x360
    This video plays OK:
    URL:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18801596
    EMP v.3.1.0.r749603_749269_749444_5
    18801601 | 800kbps | h264 | AK 4.5 (1) | 640x360
The only difference I noticed was the initial screen size of the video.  On the problem videos, the size is bigger than the OK one.  I assume the BBC videos are h264 encoded.  On both my Desktop and my laptop, I have 2 msmpeg2vdec.dll files.  1 in C:\Windows\System32 and another in C:\Windows\SysWOW64.  They are both v6.1.7140.0.  On both my Desktop and laptop, the sizes are different, 2.52 MB & 2.03 MB.
I am using the latest nVidia driver v301.42 which I installed 5/30/2012, over a month ago.  The only recent change which happened to my system on 7/4/2012 was my Norton Internet Security 2012 subscription expired.  NIS2012 then disabled itself and activated the built-in Windows firewall.  3 days ago I uninstalled NIS2012.  I also used the Norton Removal Tool.  I then installed a new NIS2012 with a new legitimate key.  However, I am still getting this freezing and I don't remember if I got this freezing before 7/4/2012.
On both FF12 and IE9, I can play Hulu, YouTube, Yahoo!, and Amazon videos with no problems.  When you right-click on any of these other flash players, nowhere does it say "h264."
    My questions are:
    1)  does the Adobe Flash Player, for both the FF12 plug-in and IE9 ax players, use the Windows7 CODEC?
    2)  Which file is the h264 CODEC, is it msmpeg2vdec.dll or something else?
    3)  Will installing a new CODEC pack fix this problem?
    4)  Is there anything else I have overlooked?  Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

Interestingly, the advertisement plays correctly.  When you right-click on the ad, it does not say h264.  I have 2 video cards and several monitors on my Desktop.  It might have something to do with that.  Otherwise, perhaps one of my other apps did something to the Flash Player h264 playback.
I'm thinking maybe if I upgraded the h264 CODEC, maybe it will play correctly again.  CODEC GUIDE has a codec package which I already downloaded but haven't installed yet.  I downloaded the "Basic."  Unless you really need to, I don't recommend anyone install it.  If you want to install a CODEC package, just install the "Basic" package and not one of the bigger packages.  I think they make changes to your system.  Before installing it, be sure to make a full backup of your Windows system.

  • Save a BBC news clip?

Is there a way to save BBC news video clips from the (embedded??) player?
    Thanks

The BBC is still getting its act together for the iPlayer downloader for Macs that they promised for this month!
In the meantime there is this:
    http://tom-tech.com/iplayerautomator/iPlayer-DL_Automator/OS_XGUI.html
which I have heard works fine on Leopard, but not on (my) Tiger!
Doubtful if this, or the BBC's version, will work outside the UK.

  • Unable to play Sky News videos with Firefox

    Can play BBC news videos.
I have removed Ad block plus to no avail
I have un checked block pop ups
I have deleted all history and cache from Firefox.
Sky News videos play on Internet Explorer.
I have all the latest updates.
I unchecked Hardware acceleration but to no avail.
My Flash player is version 12.

Your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Re: links to the bbc news player don't start video streams

this old thread has been archived (no replies allowed), but i think i've come up with a workaround to safari's refusal to play the proper bbc video clip on subsequent attempts...autoplay the file externally.
if you use pithHelmet, you can get the script off the rule exchange.
    caveats:
    1. uses realplayer
    2. might only work for the international version.

    iBod,
I'm more baffled now! I created a couple of new accounts (one admin, one standard) and tried them. Both had the same outcome:
    1. Started Safari.
    2. Went to http://news.bbc.co.uk
    3. Clicked link to display a video news clip (was one about dummies!).
    4. BBC News Player window popped up, asking if I wanted Real Player or Windows Media. Chose Real Player.
    5. Window refreshed with the correct video clip.
    6. Quit and restarted Safari and tried again. OK.
    7. Quit and restarted Safari and tried again. Not it fails persistently. (By fail I mean the player window comes up but the video clip is only a 3-second clip of a BBC logo.)
I tried the second new account and similarly. For the first few goes it works properly. After a few goes it fails.
    John.

  • Links to the BBC News Player don't start video streams.

On the BBC News website there are numerous links to video news streams which should start playing in the BBC News Player (a new popup windows with either web content and a video stream in either Windows Media Player or Real Player format).
Whenever I go to the BBC News website (http://news.bbc.co.uk) and click a video link it:
    1. Opens up the BBC News Player in a popup window.
    2. Shows a short BBC News Logo clip of 3 seconds.
    3. Then does nothing.
What it should do for step 3 is to play the relevant video stream.
I've tried this in several Mac browsers:
Safari (2.0.2) = FAILS (as described above)
Inernet Explorer (5.2) = WORKS (but without CSS the html looks messy)
    Camino (0.8.4) = WORKS
    Opera (8.0.2) = WORKS
    Firefox (1.0.2) = WORKS
Q1. So why does it work in all the above browsers, but in Safari.
Q2. Do other people get it work in Safari or not?
    John.

  • Firefox 3.6.12 crashes whenever I try to play a video on BBC news website.

I'm running Os x 10.5.8 and have fully updated my adobe flash for firefox. Every time I try to play a video on the BBC news website Firefox freezes, then crashes. Sometimes, but rarely upon reopening the video will work and it wont crash again. This problem only started with the latest patch on firefox. I run "NoScript" and "Adblock" but even with these turned off the problem persists.

I'm on Mac OSX 10.6.5 - and exactly the same problem. It seemed to start with Firefox 3.6.12 and 'latest' Flash upgrade (both done at the same time). Ive tried going back to the previous versions, but makes no difference.
Seems to be on 'auto-play' news video clips within the BBC news website, the loading info is 'stats.bbc.co.uk' as the dots spin - then crash...
Very annoying - is anybody looking at this Mozilla?

I have an old Mac 2009.

    Hello alymarvellous,
Take a look at the article linked below, it provides information about the plug-in alert that you’re seeing when browsing specific websites on your iMac.
    Safari 8 (Yosemite): Safari troubleshooting
    Problems with plug-ins
If a webpage has trouble showing plug-in content such as video, you may see a placeholder with a button that describes a plug-in problem. For example, the plug-in might be old, missing, or blocked.
Try clicking the placeholder button to resolve the problem.
For more information, see If a plug-in is missing and If a website has plug-in content.

  • How do I fix juddering playback of video on BBC News site

    Hi
When I play video on the BBC News site it is juddering and not playing back properly.  Is there anything I should do to prevent/fix this please?
    C

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
