BBC Podcast Interruptions & restarting at Beginnin...

One of the main reasons I invested in Broadband was so I could enjoy internet radio.   However, I have been very disappointed because I am unable to listen to Podcasts of BBC Radio programmes.
I listen using my Roberts Internet Radio and BT Broadband.   However, the Podcasts are interrupted, by what appear to my untrained ear to be breaks in the signal, followed by the Podcasts restarting themselves (having reconnnected to a signal) from the start of the programme.   Does anyone else suffer from this problem?   Is there a solution?   Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Ian,
I sort forum messages from a number of RSS feeds and message filters, so anything with my name in it gets directed to a special folder.
If you do need more help with the WA701ND, than is on my website, then simply post in this thread, making sure that it contains my name, and I should see it.
I do not use the "forum subscriptions" options any more, as it was generating too many e-mails.
I think you will find that the WA701ND is much more capable of handling streaming media.

  • Can I upgrade my ipod touch from ios6.1.5 to ios7 which i need to use bbc podcasts

I want to be able to download BBC podcasts.
My ipod touch has IOS6.1.5 but to access podcasts I need ios7.
Is it possible to install IO7 and how do I do it?
    Thanks for any help.

iOS7 only runs on touch 5's, so unless you have a 5, you can't up grade to iOS 7, sorry.

  • BBC podcasts don't download - common problem?

Is anyone else having problems getting BBC podcasts to download? After chewing away at the problem for some time, including deleteing and re-installing the Apple Podcasts app andBBC iPlayer radio, I've found that I still can't download BBC podcasts but can download other podcasts OK.
Instacast gives me a clue as to a possible problem with BBC podcasts with this error message: "The operation couldn't be completed. (NSXMLParseErrorDomain error 1.)
Very interested if anyone else is having a problem with BBC podcasts or has a solution to the problem of not being able to download BBC podcasts.
    (iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.1, 12GB free)

Turns out that the problem was with BT Internet Parental Controls which for reasons I couldn't see had decided to block downloads from the BBC. It came to light when I used Yahoo to try and download BBC podcasts - Yahoo were good enough to throw up a meaningful error message.
Once I turned parental controls off and then deleted and resubscribed to the BBC podcasts of interest everything worked OK.

  • BBC Podcasts - codec corrupt?

I've downloaded BBC podcasts for years. The main podcast is usually preceded by " thank you for downloading..." and sometimes followed by a another message.
Just recently the before and after message does not play properly whilst the main podcast is fine.
I am also unable to play .amr files using quicktime. The distortion and breakup is very similar to the podcast problem.
The same podcasts play properly when copied to my ipod.
It seems like a corrupt codec.
Have tried reinstalling quicktime - no change.
    I'm using iTunes 10.1.2.17 & Quicktime 7.6.9 (1680.9)
    any ideas guys?
    Thanks
    Pete

I should have remembered this before, but never mind...
There is an option (which the BBC use) that allows the podcaster to stop subscribed Podcasts from automatically downloading if you (the downloader) have not listened to the last few that you have downloaded. From memory, the BBC set this at either three or five episodes.
So in other words, if you subscribe to a programme, thereby enabling automatic downloads, after three (or is it five?) episodes have downloaded, if you have not begun to listen to any of them, the downloads will stop. In the past, there would be an on-screen message telling you this and asking if you wish to continue automatic downloading. The last time I encountered this was several versions of iTunes back, so I'm unaware if the message is still displayed. I would imagine though, that the auto-stop is still being used.
    The purpose of this feature is to prevent a podcaster's resources from being used up without their gaining any benefit. For example;
a commercial podcaster, receiving revenue from an advertiser who sponsers or advertises in the programme, needs to be able to show that advertiser that the programme (and hence the advert) has been heard.
a private podcastsr, without adverstising revenue, is paying for the bandwidth used out of their own pocket when you download. For them to have value-for-money, they need to know that you are listening.
the BBC will (I'm sure) have their own reasons for choosing the auto-stop feature, possibly related to the reasosn already stated..
A long explanation, but could this be why your Podcasts have stopped downloading?

  • BBC Podcast Iphone problems

I can't play the bbc podcasts on my iphone.
I navigate to the bbc podcast page and see the options to browse by radio station, genre etc. I then navigate a few pages on to the programme page but nothing happens. Seemingly there are no links or buttons to click on to make it play/download?

Ah, I think I understand the problem.
According to the BBC the service will not work in the UK over the EDGE network. Hard to believe that the BRITISH Broadcasting Service can't offer its Podcast service via EDGE to the British population!
To be fair, it's the fault of O2/Apple. According to the BBC...
+"it seems O2 have a proxy server that replaces content on the fly to speed up web-over-EDGE performance. This includes downgrading images, and removing any references to Mp3's - hence the lack of a play button. In the States, there’s no such proxy, so although its slower, US users get the full playback experience. We trying to see what we can do about this issue in the UK, but for now, we have to consider that our directory is WiFi only."+

  • Help with downloading BBC podcasts

I can no longer update all the BBC podcasts I'd subscribed to. I'm getting the ! appearing and when I click on it, it says that "Authorization is needed to access <weblink of podcast>".
I typed my password in wrong in the Store area when trying to download a song a few days ago and I exceeded the number of attempts but my password is working fine now.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
    Many thanks,
    Paul

What exact video podcast you're trying to download? Maybe just a server issue.

  • Error with BBC Podcasts - "The Network Connection Could not be Made"

One day last week, this just came up with the above error message. It doesn't affect other podcasts that are non-BBC and I re-installed iTunes and even installed the latest version.
    Still nothing.
What could be wrong? The podcasts seem to be there on the BBC website. Just can't get iTunes to make the connection.
I am based in NZ, but as far as I know, there hasn't been any rights changes made in the last few days that affect the podcasts I subscribe to.
Any help - gratefully received. Cheers.

I think something DID happen involving (legal?) rights to non-US (or UK) material.
I'm in the US and was subscribing to a US based podcast of BBC Agatha Christie mysteries.
Yesterday, the podcast "went away". It doesn't exist in Itunes - and, when I clicked on my link, I received a message that the podcast "wasn;t in the U.S. catalogue" (or something to that effect).
I did a little exploring in the Itunes store and discovered that a number of podcasts using UK material had vanished.

  • Everytime I pause a podcast, it restarts

Anytime I am listening to a podcast on my desktop, if I pause the podcast it will restart at the beginning of the podcast. Additionally, if I try and click in the seek bar, it will fast forward about 2 seconds and stop. If I try to click and drag the bar in the seek area, when I release the mouse it will jump right back to the beginning.

I have the same problem.  Using iTunes 12.1.0.50 on an iMac running Yosemite

  • Problem with certain BBC Podcasts in the UK

I've been subscribing to alot of the BBC Radio 1 Podcasts in the UK (I live here and have had no problems downloading them before), however certain ones simply won't allow me to download. Instead I get a short clip saying 'Sorry, this podcast is only available to download in the UK'.

  • Podcasts are restarting iPod

This problem started shortly after upgrading to version 7 of iTunes.
Currently about 90% of the podcasts I download, whether amateur or professional, will force iPod to restart when trying to play them. I have tried restoring the iPod (purchased about a month ago) but it has had no effect.
    Any ideas?

are the podcasts that the ipod is resetting on mono mp3s?
if so, perhaps check to see if the workaround from the following document is of any help with that:

  • Cannot subscribe to BBC podcasts

Cannot subscribe to podcasts of BBC radio. Get à Message That safari Cannot open THE adressen of THE podcast ?

It may depend on what type of podcast it is - some podcasts are not available outside the UK. The BBC say:
'UK-only podcasts include those which are predominantly music-focused and contain clips of commercial music (e.g. BBC Radio 1's Chart Show, or Radio 3's Jazz Library) and those which offer sports commentary.'

  • Some downloaded podcast files restart in the middle

    Hi,
Every so often, an audio podcast file (from any of a bunch of series I subscribe to) that iTunes downloads has the correct duration, but the contents are oddly corrupted: In mid-playback the audio starts over again. Say it's a 15 min. episode - after 5 min. it starts from the beginning, and it's missing the last 5 minutes.
The problem is in the file, so it's either:
    1. Corrupt from the source - doubtful, as I've encountered this from various sources, and such a significant problem wouldn't go unnoticed.
    2. Occurs during downloading.
Anyone seen this? Is there a solution? How can I delete an episode and redownload it in iTunes to test hypothesis #2?
    Thanks much,
    L.

I encountered it with a couple of episodes of the History of Rome podcast:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-history-of-rome/id261654474
Just had it with episode 9 of "A History of: Hannibal and the Punic Wars":
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/history-hannibal-punic-wars/id557854144
Likewise, 1 or more of the short episodes (under 2 minutes) of Scientific American "60-Second ..." (Space, Health, Science...), for example: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/60-second-science/id189330872
(not sure which of the several series this occured in)
From the files accumulating on my computer it looks like it also happened in episode #408 of Snap Judgement:
    https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/snap-judgment-radio/id283657561
There may have been others. It's been happening sporadically over a good span of time (give or take a year).
    Thanks,
    L.

  • With new iTunes 11 how do you restart podcasts that used to regular pause

With new iTunes 11 how do you restart podcasts that used to regular pause?
Before iTunes 11, a symbol would appear in individual podcast lists showing that the sender requires you to confirm that you still wish to receive their podcast. This used to occur with all my BBC podcasts once a week usually at the weekend.
Now with iTunes 11 this control seems to have disappeared. Tried all the new icons but nothing seems to do this.
Now (as its Saturday) all my BBC podcasts have stopped as there appears no way to reconfirm that I still want to automatically receive them.
    Please help!

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.

  • ITunes podcast downloading problem.  "Authorization is required to access" error message.

I've been subsribing to a podcast through iTunes for years with no problems, but today I get the error message:
"There was a problem downloading (podcast name).  Authorization is required to access (url feed)"
Its a BBC podcast and I now get the same error message for all the other BBC podcasts that I subscribe to.  I also cant play or download any BBC podcasts from the iTunes Store.  All other podcasts by all other providers are fine.
Weirdly this problem seems to be limited to the Macbook Pro as the iMac on the same network can access the problem podcasts with no hassle.
A few web searches have turned up very little, any ideas in Apple Communities-land!

Hey Roger and thanks for your amazingly quick response.
I did a quick confirm: it doesn't seem to work on any Windows machines I can get my hands on, so it isn't something specific to me (whew!).  It definitely DOES work on any Mac I can get my hands on (which you also confirmed - thanks).
That link, the feedproxy.google.com one, works fine on Windows and Mac alike.  I very much imagine that someone else is using FeedBurner and while I'm not huge into podcasts, there are a lot of others who are.  This issue would've come up if it were something like that.  Either way: I can access that link (and thus the content) just fine on any machine I'm on.
So, what you're saying is to ditch FeedBurner entirely and just submit the raw feed to iTunes.  That sounds good (and, if I want more indepth statistics later, I'll cross that bridge then)...but I'm afraid I'm not sure how to do that.  I've already submitted the FeedBurner feed to iTunes and I'm not sure how I'd go about changing it.  Would I simply ask iTunes to delete the old feed and more or less resubmit?
Thanks for the help about the artwork.  The individual files may very well be missing the metadata, as when I asked the guy doing that if he had included the artwork, he indicated he was rather confused.  I'll test that out in a bit.  The feed artwork, however, I must admit ignorance about.  Where might I be able to change that?  I'm using WordPress and...PowerPress/BluBrry (or whatever it's referred to).
Thanks again for being so incredibly helpful with all this.  And so timely, too.
