BBC SNAFU
I used to listen to a BBC widget on my PowerBook. Now I have a new iMac and the only sounds this widget makes are when turning the radio on and switching channels. The channels themselves do not play. Nor can I hear when I go directly to any radio station's page. My only option for listening to radio is via iTunes. This can't be right... right?
Perhaps the stream is not broadcasting. I just downloaded a BBC Radio Widget and tried to make it work. Found one significant flaw, but got it working. When I tried Channel Five, I got nothing. When I went to BBC Radio website to listen to Channel 5, I got a stream telling me that due to contractual obligations, they could not stream the content. This message did not play in the widget.
However, the version of the widget I have doesn't make any sound when changing channels, so I don't think I have th same widget. Here's a link to the Phantom Gorilla BBC Radio Widget.

Problems installing Adobe Air and BBC iPlayer Desktop
Problems installing Adobe Air and BBC iPlayer Desktop
I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on an ASUS netbook with 2mb ram. I installed both Air 3.7 and BBC iPlayer Desktop using Google Chrome. I downloaded 3 BBC programmes. Two ran fine but the third wouldn't start and I kept getting a message to try again later. I deleted this programme and downloaded it again, with the same result.
So I uninstalled both Air and the BBC iPlayer Desktop, the Air exe file and the two folders at the following locations:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR\ and
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\BBCiPlayerDesktop.xxx
Since doing this each time I try to install Air either on its own or with the BBC iPlayer software I get the message part way through installation:
"Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator."
I have run the Microsoft Fix it programme and still get the same result.
I have tried everything on your Trouble Shooting page apart from the bit about the elevated command prompt, but as I'm the sole user and administrator, that seems unnecessary.
I have closed Chrome and tried installation using Windows Explorer but with the same result.
I have tried all the above with Microsoft Security Essentials running and disabled. And I have tried the same with Astrill on and off.
I have had a response from the BBC with much the same advice as appears on your trouble shooting page.
Here is the Air installation log, followed by the MSI log.

Does anyone have a issue when watching a downloaded programme from BBC iplayer?
The programmes download fine, but when I watch them, it plays for about 6 seconds, freezes for 2 seconds and the plays, but continues this process all through the programme. Also when closing down iplayer it does not close properly and just hangs. Very frustrating and I have never had this issue on any other android phones.
I've checked all my settings and all looks OK.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Yes, you are correct, it does do what iplayer states, which is play normally for about the first 30 minutes and reverts back to freezing etc.
I do hope Google sorts this out, as this is adding to the things I don't like about Sony and the Z3.
May get to the stage of me ditching it and going back to a Nexus 5. -
I have been using an App Tab for static pages within Ancestry. No problem.
But I would like to make an App Tab for one of the radio stations for the BBC network in the UK. (I live in the UK.)
Every time I do so the tab sticks at the time I installed it. No good for listening to current programs 2-3 days later.
Has the introduction of active tabs just arrived with Firefox 5 (which I only installed five minutes ago)?I agree anti-relay can be using UBE feature. However, there is serious problem in reject the spam mail. My nms is using UBE feature to stop spam mail. According to the work flow of the UBE, the mail is received by nms completely and UBE is going to invesgate the mail address. Although UBE can stop the spam mail, the spam mail have a trouble in returning the mail to the sender. The reason is the sender address is usually not existed in the world. That will cause a lot of mail waiting in the mail queue.
In my experience, do not use UBE for anti-relay. -

flash player has been installed multiple time without errors but bbc news website and even flash player help say it isn't. How do i get out of this loop? - using windows 7 ultimate and latest IE11
I have had the same problem for WEEKS and I cannot access any sites that use Flash. Flash has been installed on this computer since I bought it in 2012. I have allowed auto updates but for weeks the updates never get past Step 2 - is this because I do NOT want the Google Tool bar? I use NO tool bars as there is only 6 inches of vertical screen space. Is this because I uncheck wanting Chrome as a default browser? It is already installed, I just don't use it. I came to this site and ran the check is it installed and the system says it is either not installed or not enabled. Version 14 just downloaded about 30 minutes ago - but did not progress to Step 3 although a pop up screen came up with a finish button, which I clicked. WHAT is the problem and how do I fix it? If this were just a compatibility bug between IE11 and Adobe they have had plenty of time to fix it.

Use Firefox. Have BBC iPlayer which will not load, saying I need a newer version of Adobe Air: when trying to instal Adobe Air, get message saying I already have a more recent version. It worked when I was using IE, but not since changing to Firefox.
Hi there,
stumbled on this conversation after having problems myself.
After lots of trial and error, I was finally able to install iPlayer on my MacBook Pro.
Firstly remove Adobe Air (Applications, Utilities, Adobe Air Uninstaller).
Reboot (not sure if it is needed but it is what I did).
Download Adobe Air 2.5 from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/853/cpsid_85304.html
Then retry installing iPlayer from the BBC webpage. I ignored the prompt from Adobe Air to upgrade to the latest version (3.1). -
Why can't I get BBC I Player for the last few months. It always asks me to install the Flash player which I have done millions of times - to no avail. This is hugely annoying
What OS?
What browser? -
Hi,
I've had my Macbook for a couple of weeks and everything was excellent until yesterday.
I always read news from the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk) and now I cannot open the page. I get the following message:
"Safari can’t open the page “http://news.bbc.co.uk/” because it can’t find the server “news.bbc.co.uk”."
At first I thought it was a problem with Safari, but Firefox won't open it either. And then I thought it was a problem with my ISP, but my notebook PC opens it fine using IE!
I've trashed all the plists, empty the caches, repaired permissions, logged in as another user, and even used my airport connection to connect through a different ISP, but all to no avail.
None of the proxies are checked in the network preferences pane and I even turned the Firewall off.
I have no idea what to do and really need to access this page as I use it everyday for news whilst living in Japan.
Any suggestions or similar problems?!
Thanks in advance,
MikeHello Barry,
thanks for your welcome and response.
For some reson my browsers couldn't connect to the BBC page. After doing a google I found this:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=195307
It seems that because I had some duplicate fonts in my fontbook, the page wasn't opening. I removed my duplicate fonts, and now I can surf the BBC homepage. How odd?!
It seems that fonts can be the source of a few problems.
Thanks again for your reply and I can now go on and enjoy my macbook!

Sound disappeared in Safari and BBC Radio Widget
Two days ago, without warning, the sound disappeared from both Safari and my BBC Radio Widget. All other sound on the computer is fine and if I play an MP3 through Safari it will play but otherwise there is silence. (Problem was discovered by our 5 year-old who was disappointed that there was no sound coming from the CBeebies websites!).
Have checked all other sound options and everything is in order.
Went to local Mac re-seller and they shrugged their shoulders and said try here.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help.You're welcome.
If there is a preference file associate with the widget, move it to the trash before you reinstall a new copy. The preference file will be name widget-com.(name assigned to widget).plist. You can try a search in spotlight on look in your User Library>Preferences folder.

The Message "Connect to iTunes to Use Push Notifications "BBC History Magazine" notifications may include alerts, sounds and icon badges" keeps coming up in Newstand, also happens with National Geographic Magazine. HELP!
I have now followed multiple instructions from this and other forums. have turned push notifications off. Turned them on. Have updated to IOS 6. Have signed out and signed back in, have uninstalled all magazines and reinstalled. Have synced, and updated everything in iTunes.
Nothing works,. Also cannot use youtube.Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
It might also be a good idea to contact Square for assistance. -
after upgrading to mountain lion, i cannot play any video at all, be it directly off a DVD, or through streaming like youtube, BBC iplayer, love film or even directly off my iTunes library. in each case, all i get is a black screen and no error message.
Hi, i had the same problem and tried this,
Somehow iTunes is tied to Safari. Try this:
Someone mentioned to clear all website data and history in safari, stupid but it was either this or the below that fixed it
or this,
Disable Wi-Fi Networking Services
Many users have reported that they’ve solved their issues by disabling Wi-Fi Networking under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This only relates to your location being used for Wi-Fi Networking, so it doesn’t disable Wi-Fi entirely.
Please let me know if it works. -
I don't understand why Firefox would take me to a link UNDERNEATH the link I clicked on in the drop-down menu. Items in the drop-down menu are supposed to be clickable. I'm tired of clicking on a BBC news story link only to be sent to the beanie babies page of Amazon.com.

Flash Content on the BBC in Safari 5.0.6
This question applies to my G5 2.5 gHz Tower running Safari 5.0.6. and an issue with Flash content on the BBC News website.
I often the BBC News website, and until a few months ago was able to play all of their video content. For some inexplicable reason their website now tells me I do not have the minimum Flash version (10.1.0) for playback. However, I do have the minimum Flash installation (v.10.1.102.64) as confirmed by the Adobe web site, and, seconded by the simple fact that Firefox 3.6.25 on the very same computer does play all the content at the BBC News web site and fails to generate any warnings.
So, Mac gurus and assorted experts who have earned my depest respect... what's going on? I have written to those in charge of the BBC News web site and indications are they probably didn't read my message past the subject line as they proceeded to ask me all the questions they'd have had answers to by reading my message in the first place. In short, they asked me to upgrade to Flash 10.1.0... so that route is not going solve my problem.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks...BBC iPlayer relies on Adobe Air. AIR 1.5.3 is the last version of AIR that supports Mac PowerPC and Windows 2000. AIR applications that require AIR 2 or later cannot be installed or used on a Macintosh PowerPC or a computer running the Windows 2000 operating system.

I am in the same boat. I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, although all other flash videos (YouTube for example) are fine.
For reasons that passeth all understanding, they work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have anabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.
You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine. -
New Grid Menu Snafu with Right-Click
Going to Podcasts from the source menu, selecting Grid View, and then right clicking "Update" to update the podcast selected does not work. Viewing the podcast in any other manner does work.
Originally upon downloading iTunes 8, this feature worked at least once, I think. However, to my recollection, I haven't been able to do it after completing it once or twice.
I have installed some new apps, but none of them or video or audio related (RapidoStart, RapidoWrite).
This is a small snafu, but it makes working in grid mode annoying because I have to go into a different view, collapse the expanded podcast lists or scroll down them, OR individually select the podcast to start the update process in order to quickly update more than several podcasts of interest.
Automatic updates also do not seem to work, even though I asked iTunes to download the podcasts everyday for new episodes.
Any help or ideas are appreciated. Thank you.I might have just found a solution myself:

It seems other people are wondering too.
And for those of you who don't understand why this is useful: Try it.
Open Textedit, Apple-N, and then save the darned file somewhere deep in the labyrinth of the Finder where you've just been but withouth the file. It takes AGES.
I, on the other hand -- at least in Windows --, right-click, new, double-click AAAND I'm on editing the file.
VERY quick.
It's beyond me why this is not possible on a Mac.
