BBC website slow today..

Anyone else experiencing slow loading pages on the BBC website?
The "homepage" loads quickly enough but loading any of the news pages, and particularly the sport pages, takes an eternity.

Whoa there.
You can't jump to the conclusion that it's a BT problem. There could be a problem with the link between BT's last router and the connection to the various sites you're trying to access. It may be that you and your colleague both go via the same route but that doesn't mean it's a BT problem.
Can you do some traceroutes to the various sites and post the results so we can see where, if any, there are delays?

  • Issues with BBC website video + Audio

I've been having issues using the video and audio content on the BBC website for a few months, it's started to get really annoying so I thought I would ask and see if anyone has a solution.
First I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, repaired permissions, updated Safari, Firefox, Chrome, repaired permissions, deleted prefs, basically done everything from a system point that I can think of.
I'm still having a problem of the video and audio locking up the browser and taking AGES to actually display. I've done a video for it to show what I mean:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzFw3qqKADc&hd=1
The first part where I view the video story is actually not 'too' bad, still on the slow side but that's rare, keep watching and you'll see how slow it is!
It's very annoying because not only does it take ages to load, the browser just totally locks up, so there's not much chance of doing anything else, it's just slows right down. This actually happens in any browser I try. (I think in the video it was Firefox but that's just because of what I was using at the time, same goes for Safari)
I created a new user account and it's actually fine in that so there must be a conflict somewhere in my system, I'm just not sure how to resolve it.
    Any solutions or thoughts?

It seems to take too long to buffer. How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
Do you have any third-party add-ons or enhancers installed?
    As for general browser slowness:
If Safari is getting very slow:
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x
    This is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

  • I can no longer access any BBC websites

I have my homepage set as the bbc website for many years - since yesterday I have been unable to connect to any of the bbc websites - I am having no problems accessing any other sites just the BBC for some strange reason

See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • Safari behaviour with BBC website

Since installing Leopard on my MacBook the BBC website is misbehaving. I solved the video problem by downloading RealPlayer 10 (thanks for the postings on this). BUT ...
The banner at the top of the BBC News opening page flickers. Parts of the page do not show until I move the cursor around.
Can't say I have seen this problem on other websites - is this a BBC-Leopard specific problem or some other more general problem?Any known solution?

This is a University machine and hence uses Sophos antivirus.
That could possibly be a problem. Is it the latest Leopard compatible version?
    http://www.sophos.com/products/enterprise/endpoint/security-and-control/mac/
    My Home Library Safari
    That should be fine.
The higher level Internet Plugins appear to include some from my 1.8GHz Power PC G5 since I used Firewire to move files and applications to the new Macbook but before installing Leopard. Do I just move these to the Disabled folder and then add them back one by one?
They may not all be Intel compatible, so should probably not be moved willy-nilly from the G5! Check on the manufacturers' websites to see if they are in Universal Binary (will work with either) or PPC (won't work with your Macbook) or Intel (OK).
As this is a fresh install you could do worse than read the following and adapt it to your needs:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
See also the very informative post from QuickTimeKirk dated Dec 3, 2007 in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1268489&tstart=0
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • The first time I try to load video on BBC website, firefox crashes. When I restart it, the video loads. This happens EVERY TIME I start a new internet session. WHY?

I am using a mac, and every time I turn it on, load the BBC website on firefox and then try to load a video there, firefox crashes. I select restart from the two options provided, and when it reloads the BBC page, I can watch that video and any other on the site without problems. Then, if I shut the mac down and turn it on again, the problem once again occurs. Is this just a bug in firefox?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 20.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will lose all personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • BBC website keeps saying Javascript need to be enabled for page content to work properly, but it is enabled?

Pages with 'enhanced functionality' on the BBC website won't work, I get a message saying Javascript needs to be enabled, but it IS enabled..
I looked at the list of checkboxes under Tools>Options>Content>Enable Javascript - Advanced, but can't see what I could reasonably change. First and third options are already selected, none of the others are ones I would want to change and seem unrelated to the problem anyway. Thanks for any help :-)

  • My mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday

my mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday, i purchased it used an don't have disc or password

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • Is apple site slow today?

    Is safari slow today?

Finally, I resolved the ITunes' Home Sharing issue on the iMAC.  Turned on Apple Store, logged into iTures Store and confirmed the payment details.
Did the same on the TV2: Turned on HD Rental, and tried to log in.  Keep getting the message, that either the apple id or the password is incorrect and directs me to to to iforgot.apple.com.  I have no problem logging on using the browser on my iMAC.
What unknown secret steps am I missing?  I even turned on the ports: 123, 3689, 80, 443, 53, 5353 as mentioned in one of the posts here.  Restarted the routers, TV2 and the TV.

    No problem with Safari here.
Empty your Safari cache and try resetting Safari.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down including browsers.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • I want to use Bayclays mobile banking on my IPad. When I submit my details I get error 00000 no connection to Internet.  BBC websites work without difficulty

I have an IPad2 running IOS8.0.2. I have installed Barclays mobile banking app version 1.7 and 1.10.
when I enter my details and submit them I get error 00000 no connection to Internet
at about the same time BBC websites work without difficulty.
I believe I am not alone with this problem.
    Does anyone have a solution?

    Hello there Boot5784,
It sounds like you are unable to use either if these versions of this banking app on iOS 8.0.2. I have an article here for you to help either get the issue resolved, or reach out to the developer if needed:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
    Restart the app
Close the app and open it again.
    Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
Update your device software and your apps
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
    Update your apps:
Open the App Store and tap Updates.
If updates are available, tap Update All.
If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.
You might need a Wi-Fi connection to update some apps.
    Reinstall the app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it. Remember that deleting an app also deletes its data.
    Delete the app.
    Press the Home button.
Go to the App Store and download the app again.
Wait for the app to download, then open it from the Home screen.
If the download stops, you can resume it.
    Contact the developer
If you see the issue again, contact the developer of the app for help:
Find the app in the App Store.
Tap the app and tap Reviews.
    Tap App Support.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Indesign CC CS6 is really slow today. Updates have been done. Do you have a solution?

Indesign CC CS6 is really slow today. Updates have been done. Do you have a solution?

Adobe has absolutely acknowledged issues for some users with CC and there are well over 700,000 paid CC subscribers. I suggest you check your facts before posting complete nonsense.
Where has this been acknowledged? If so it is still not fixed.
CS6 sold 14.5 million copies. An advertisement email from Adobe stating: "Join the over 650,000 creative professionals who’ve already made the switch to Creative Cloud* and get everything you need to create, collaborate, and publish all in one place. And with a Creative Cloud membership, you’ll always have the most advanced design features the minute they become available. At the Q2 earnings Adobe stated 770,000 subscribers. Why do the state 120,000 less? Did 120,000 early adopters not continue the subscription?"
That may be more that a few but hardly worth risking having access to the latest new bugs the minute they become available.

  • This laptop cannot run Flash video on the BBC website

On this Vista laptop, I try to watch video of the Japan earthquake on the BBC website. But each video just shows a momentary red swirl, and then stays black.
I have the identical problem on FF4.0RC, and there I can also run it in 'Safe Mode', with all addons disabled. With or without addons, it behaves the same as 3.6.15; no video.
However, on the W7 laptop beside the Vista one, everything is fine, and the video runs in all three combinations there.
The Vista laptop will show Flash video from YouTube perfectly OK, so it seems to be something to do with how the BBC site presents video.
However, as the W7 laptop has no problems with the BBC site, it seems to be some configuration issue on the Vista laptop, rather than a general Firefox or BBC problem, or indeed, anything to do with my broadband set-up. (I'm guessing it's more subtle that just Vista vs. W7 here, as there are many other differences between the two laptops).
I have watched video on the BBC site in the past, but that was a few Firefoxes ago. I also note the BBC videos will not run in IE8 on this laptop at the moment, though they are fine on the W7 laptop in IE9 (though I don't think the 9 has anything to do with it)
Has anyone any suggestions as to what might be stopping the Vista laptop from showing the BBC videos?

BBC iPlayer relies on Adobe Air. AIR 1.5.3 is the last version of AIR that supports Mac PowerPC and Windows 2000. AIR applications that require AIR 2 or later cannot be installed or used on a Macintosh PowerPC or a computer running the Windows 2000 operating system.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/853/cpsid_85304.html
I am in the same boat. I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, although all other flash videos (YouTube for example) are fine.
For reasons that passeth all understanding, they work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have anabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.
You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
    But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine.
