How do I shut down from the login window in mountain lion using the keyboard
how do I shut down/sleep/restart from the login window in mountain lion using the keyboard?
Hi Thomas, thanks for your reply.
Yes in standard start-up as it is and in recovery mode I still get the same message about Disk Utility being unable to repair the disk so I should back-up and restore.
Some posters have said that booting into safe mode should unmount the installer and allow rebooting back into Lion, that would allow me to back-up the files properly, as my last back up was (as is often the way) not too recent.
But I think your suggestion looks more likely to be he correct way to do it, and I'll take the hit on any data that I may lose.
Thanks again. -
Any idea what a blank screen with a flashing folder with a question mark inside of it means???
Ambinder55,
it means that the forced shutdown corrupted some portion of the internal disk’s filesystem. Which version of OS X is installed on your MacBook Pro? -
Itunes will not shut down. it keeps reopening?
its the latest version, windows 7 is up to date. after updating iphone and ipad tp iOS 5 itune keeps opening every 2-3 minutes, it will not stop! i uninstalled it and reinstalled, still the same. this is maddening!
Hi jkherman.
I am having a similar problem. I shut down iTunes and then shut off my computer (MBP 13", 2.9 GHz i7, OS X 10.9).
When I reboot, iTunes appears to be running, however the window is not visible, but the icon is lit from underneath in my dock and iTunes is running when I check the Activity Monitor.
Also, it will not shut down from the dock icon. I need to go into Force Quit to shut it down.
Any ideas?
Thanks! -
Help! PowerBook G4 will not shut down using normal methods!
Recently, my PowerBook G4 Aluminum (1.5/1.67 GHz) will not shut down. It has recently started doing this. When I choose any of the shut down, restart, log out items in the (apple) menu, it will not bring up a dialog. Same with pushing power button. I have to do sudo reboot in the Terminal to make it shut off, or otherwise I can just hold the power button. Tried resetting PRAM. Recently downloaded a few apps. Can anyone help?
-The Mac BotIt's been a long time since I've revisited this...
Reinstalled OS due to main account getting corrupted. Could not log in.
That did not resolve the corrupted account, so I booted up with command-S and issued a few commands to reset and force the Setup Assistant to run. That worked, allowed me to login and start fresh.
That did not solve the not shutting down problem.
I am able to "lock" the system (using MacLoc) and shut down from the login window.
Or if I have Fast User Switching enabled I can choose "Login Window..." from the menu, and shut down from there.
A long time ago, I edited a few .nib files inside /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Contents/Resources.
A reinstall replaced those files with the originals.
Still cannot shut down by pressing power button and clicking Shut Down, or choosing log out, shut down, or restart from the apple menu.
Important clue: If I press Shift-Command-Q (the log out hotkey) the window I am working with dims as if another window popped up, but no other window popped up. -
HI ....I have a new macmini 2.5 Ghz 10.7.3 Lion, had a problem today ,it froze so I could not shut down using mouse or tablet pen. used the power switch, when I tried to restart I got audible 'beeps' from it. I managed to restart it but kept getting a message come up on one ot the dual screens ' restart using the power swich to turn it off , then press it again to restart.'
This worked okay , but now it just keeps freezing whenever I start it up. I thought the issue could be my old Epson Expression 1680 scanner not being compatible , so I have unplugged it. I also had a look at the new memory I installed when I got it, but this seems not be the problem.
It is connected up to an Eizo Flexscan S2231W using a cable straight into the HDMI input , the other monitor is a small Acer using the VGA into Thunderbolt port.
When I turn the Eizo screen on first and then press the power button on the mac-mini, I hear the chime then the screen flahes the 'Digital no signal' message on and off for about 30 seconds , then the monitor comes on as normal. But it is still freezing up on me after using it for a while and I am having to use the power switch button to turn it off again.
Can anyone help please.I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen. -
Shutting down from a console you're not using.
As described by many users of fglrx or r128 on old cards... when shutting down from inside X, there is a very good chance that the computer will freeze before it finishes shutting down.
Nothing I can do saves that and from others I hear the only way to complete the shutdown is to ssh into the machine and issue that command.
This led me to believe that if the shutdown command comes from an outside source it will finish whether or not the console running X has frozen. I tried this script:
#!/bin/bash
rm /home/dummy
until [ 6 -eq 9 ]; do
if [ -e /home/dummy ]; then
poweroff
else
sleep 5
fi
done
And used touch /home/dummy to turn off the computer. The script runs in console 2 so the poweroff command came from console 2 but i was running X in console 1. Nevertheless I just experienced another lockup and the computer would not shut down.
Any idea why? When someone ssh's into the machine and types "poweroff" the actual command that turns off this computer is coming from sshd correct? And the reason it works is because sshd does not run in the same console as X, it starts up as a daemon before you even login to a console at all. Does that mean if I somehow make the above script into a daemon and start it before logging in, touch /home/dummy will shutdown successfully all the time?
I need some way of shutting down (and using ssh all the time from another machine isnt practical) and I'm really confused as to why sshd can shutdown when console 1 is frozen but console 2 cannot shutdown when console 1 is frozen. The only way to avoid the freeze would be to turn off 3D acceleration and from everything I've read this means starting X without 3D. I'd love to know if there's a way to turn off 3D in the middle of an X session.
Does anyone have solutions? Or am I stuck waiting until I have a server which automatically shuts down my laptop over ssh, when the laptop tells the server it wants to shut down?Hopefully this will become a non-issue soon as kernel 2.6.23 makes the chance of freezing on shutdown seem like only 1%.

my imac will not shut down cause it says my mail is open but it is not and i cannot open my mail from the bottom of the screen
Hi there, go in to the utilites of you applications folder and find "Mail" then go stop processes.
If you cannot find Mail then open mail up and follow the process as above.

And will not start up in safe mode. I have reset PRAM and SMC. Also restarted with no startup items, no luck. Had the problem of waking from sleep and not shutting down in 10.7, updated to 10.8 hoping for fix, no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksHi, this log has some similarities to my ipod touch which seems to be not sleeping properly due to wireless issues. Can I check - are you using a wifi connection - if so have you tried ethernet?

Logger Service keeps shutting down and restarting
Hello,
I have upgraded my lab UCCE call center to v9.0
I have a simplexed environment
Ever since, the logger service keeps shutting down and restarting.
Recently, the node manager issued an error message and shut down the server
I tried to check some logs but I point out the problem, there are errors in different processes.
Attached are the logs.Hi,
if the NM tries to reload the server, it indicates a Problem (capital inteded).
Indeed, there's something interesting going on:
08:29:11:822 la-rpl Trace: Starting Recovery Key for Admin table is 6717118506000.0
08:29:11:822 la-rpl Trace: The largestkey = 7201232308043.0 >= startkey = 6717118506000.0
08:29:11:823 la-rpl Trace: To correct this problem: Stop logger service. Use ICMDBA tool to sync configuration data from its partner logger database. Restart logger service.
08:29:11:823 la-rpl Fail: Assertion failed: largestkey < startkey. File: ICRDB.CPP. Line 742
08:29:11:860 la-rpl Trace: CExceptionHandlerEx::GenerateMiniDump -- A Mini Dump File is available at logfiles\replication.exe_20130523082911824.mdmp
08:29:12:074 la-rpl Unhandled Exception: Exception code: 80000003 BREAKPOINTFault address: 754A3219 01:00012219 C:\Windows\syswow64\KERNELBASE.dllRegisters:EAX:00000000EBX:00000000ECX:00001890EDX:E1043F00ESI:015F8AB0EDI:00000005CS:EIP:0023:754A3219SS:ESP:002B:003CE2D8 EBP:003CE2E0DS:002B ES:002B FS:0053 GS:002BFlags:00000246Call stack:Address Frame754A3219 003CE2E0 DebugBreak+26EB1459C 003CE2EC EMSAbortProcess+C6EB1ACD1 003CF7F8 EMSReportCommon+1A16EB1ADBB 003CF818 EMSFailMessage+2B013BBE5A 003CF8A8 ICRDb::ICRDb+44A013B2FE2 003CF9B8 main+582015D96C2 003CF9FC NtCurrentTeb+174767333AA 003CFA08 BaseThreadInitThunk+1277449EF2 003CFA48 RtlInitializeExceptionChain+6377449EC5 003CFA60 RtlInitializeExceptionChain+36
The short version: configuration data is corrupt.
The longer version: the above message in red informs about the result of a sanity check. Each configuration change creates a new row in one of the tables holding the config info, and each row contains a RecoveryKey which is usually a large number incremented by the insertion. The error message says the largest key (= last key) contains a value that is lower than the first key. Naturally, this is something to consider for a lonely philosopher, but the rigid world of Cisco ICM does not allow metaphysical phenomena. Lower numbers are supposed to be lower than higher numbers.
This, of course, raises an exception and the Logger service restarts. If there are too many restarts, the Node Manager kicks in and restarts the machine - this is just a mechanism that prevents a larger extent of data corruption.
Now, if there's an other side Logger - fine, as the error message suggests, you can initiate manual replication (provided the other Logger database contains valid information).
Unfortunately, as you have written, this is a side A only environment. This may mean:
- accepting the situation, stopping ICM, throwing out the logger database, recreating it and reinstalling the Logger service,
- poking around in various tables to check what may be saved - this may mean the beginning of an adventure.

Windows server not shutting down
Hi guys,
We have installed and configured correctly a PI 7.0
system on Windows 2003 Standard Edition X64-bit with SQL Server 2005.
We are on SP12. Everything, SLD, RFC connections work properly.
The problem was that 4-5 days after the installation the Windows Server
started restarting automatically in unexpected time during the day
(unexpected shutdown), even when anybody didn't do anything in the
system.
SAP suggested us to upgrade firmware, network card and
memory, which actually solved the problem.
However, the problem that we are facing right now is that the Windows
Server is not shutting down. That is, we are trying to shut down the
operating system, but it never does so.
SAP suggested us that it could be a service
which is defined as restart ever, and to try commands shutdown -s/-r -t 00 -f
from CMD, but no result. The server is trying to shut down or restart unsuccessfully.
It remains in a grey page and is trying to shut down itself.
This is a production system and we go live on 01/01/2008! Do you have
any ideas?

IMQ Broker Not Shutting Down on Win 2000 Server Re-boot
I am using a Windows 2000 Server and have found that during a re-boot the Broker Service (3.5 SP1) is not shutting down completely. The following lines are missing from the log entry created when restarting the server: -
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1093]: Shutdown requested by broker administrator
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1047]: Shutting down broker...
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1077]: Broadcast good-bye to all connections ...
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1078]: Flushing good-bye messages ...
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1063]: Done
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1048]: Shutdown of broker complete.
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1066]: Closing: [email protected]:1108->admin:1074. Count=0
[17/Aug/2004:12:55:58 BST].
If the Broker service is manually stopped through Services the entries are placed into the log file.
The problem being created is the broker lock file is not cleared when service is not shutdown completely and when the server is restarted the broker service is then unable to launch as it believes an instance of the service is already running. When the lock file is deleted the broker service can be started.
Has anyone experienced this problem before and found a solution?
If any further information is required in this log then please update with required details.
Many thanks in advance.
Dave.Thanks Joe,
Please read to the end. Thanks to your suggestions I believe I have found the cause of the IMQ Broker problems I was experiencing.
As you suggested by adding the line: -
imq.hostname=257s-bs1a
to the end of the IMQ config.properties file this seems to have worked around the problem shutting down and restarting the IMQ Broker.
Following numerous server restarts the IMQ Broker Service had restarted with Windows successfully. However, I was unable to successfully access the Data Distribution Page.
Further investigation showed the server was using a leased IP address and not static.
I removed the 'imq.hostname' line added earlier and changed the server IP address to static. When the server was rebooted I found the IMQ Service had started successfully. On several successive re-boots the IMQ Broker service restarted with Windows correctly.
To check if this was related to having a dynamic IP address of the server was changed back to Dynamic. Following the first re-boot of the server IMQ had started successfully. On the second re-boot of the server with Dynamic IP the IMQ Broker service did not restart. Following additional re-boots with a dynamic IP address the IMQ Broker service did not restart.
With the IP address changed back to static the server was re-booted. Following the first re-boot the IMQ Broker service had not restarted. Following subsequent re-boots with a static IP address the IMQ Broker service did restart.
Thank you Joe for pointing me in the correct direction.

The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost
Hi, we recently experienced the above issue and after looking for explanations I haven't been able to find any satisfying answers when other people have posted this issue.
Our problem is as follows:
2 node 2008R2 cluster running SQL 2012
Each node is a HP BL460c running in a HP C7000 Blade Chassis.
We were updating the flexfabric cards on one of the chassis. The other chassis had been patched the previous week with no problems.
During the update process the flexfabric cards, which hold the Ethernet and FC connections, reboot so before work had begun all active cluster services had been failed over to the node in the chassis not being worked on. However despite this the cluster
service shut down on this one particular cluster. All other clusters running across these 2 chassis continued to run as expected.
As other people have posted before we saw the following errors in the system log.
1564: File share witness resource 'File Share Witness' failed to arbitrate for the file share
1069: Cluster resource 'File Share Witness' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed.
1172: The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk.
Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected
such as hubs, switches, or bridges.
However we cant understand what could cause this to happen when the service is running on the node in the chassis not being updated, especially when the same update was performed the week before with no issues. How can both nodes lose connectivity
to the File Share Witness at the same time?
Cluster Validation tests run fine and don't highlight any issues. The file share witness is accessible from both servers.Hi,
Please confirm you have install the Recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Clusters update, especially the following hotfix.
The network location profile changes from "Domain" to "Public" in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Macbook Pro will not shut down AND other issues...
Macbook Pro will not shut down. Not using the POWER button, not using control/alt/command/esc, not using force quit, and obviously not by selecting Sleep or Shut down from the Apple menu.
Force quit will not even pop up when selected.
Top row keys do not work either, have gone into settings and switched them to F keys and back again, no luck.
iPhoto will not import photos and will not shut down, gives me a message stating it is importing photos (nothing is connected to computer though). Baffling.
HELP! Computer is only a month old
Thank you everyone xxPlease make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
