BC partition: 55gb total, 15gb used, showing only 25gb free..?

Hey all, I'm not sure if this is normal but thought I would ask. I've done every kind of disk usage measurement tool I can think of (du, windows file sizes, osx file sizes.. etc).. all say that I am using 15gb of space on my 55gb bootcamp partition... but it's showing both in windows and osx that the partition only has 25gb of space left. 15 + 25 = 40gb.. so somewhere I am missing between 10 and 15gb of free space on my boot camp partition.
I'm running Snow Leopard on Mac... and Windows 7 on the bootcamp partition. I had some large files on there (8-10gb), which I'd apparently deleted (but don't remember deleting)..but I might have accidentally. I am wondering if:
1) the files weren't deleted, but are somehow missing or hidden due to some disk error, but are still taking up space on the bootcamp partition?
2) the files were deleted, and the ~10+gb discrepancy in "free space" reporting is normal?
Thanks!
Pete

Problem solved! Ran Disk Utility not in recover mode again, and it identified that the logical size wasn't right. Repair Disk while logged in - and at the upper level "Macintosh HD" on the left sidebar - fixed the issue, and I'm going to not attempt to run Boot Camp again for a while just in case :-p

  • System Running Slow-Disk Utility Shows Only 4GB Free - Help!

what are some of the common things that can be deleted that newbies don't realize take up space? I am encountering the beach ball when I try to do things like go between web pages or launch applications, etc. It appears that I am showing only 4.3 GBs available.
Since I share this Mac with my whole family, (movies, music, etc,) I'm suspecting that we are holding things that need to be deleted or saved to CD/DVD. This really didn't start until I upgrade to Leopard and also am using Time Capsule.
I appreciate any help for a novice!

You can safely delete anything in your home account / caches folder
    /Users/account/Library/Caches
Sort by size, and dump some of the larger ones, like MetaData, and also look for QuickTime cache folder and others.
Backup to a FireWire drive or get one...
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire
    and repair your boot drive.
You could store common media files on external drive, partition it so you have room for a full backup of your drive, and room for media files on 2nd partition.
Take a look at where space is getting used:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/omnidisksweeper
Pulling and upgrading your internal drive, and put it in a FW case, would probably make sense too.

  • Itunes shows only 4gb free for my 8gb touch

My 4th generation ipod touch 8 gb shows only 4gb as total size in itunes. I had recently restored the os to 4.3.3, I also uninstalled all apple products as mentioned in the complete uninstallation guide but the issue still persists. I suspect its the 64 bit itunes issue. For once I could play few songs that were loaded by the service center guys(I had left the device for diagonistics, they say its all right) but after that itunes could never read my ipod. All backup sessions failed. I'm also in doubt about the hardware(ipod) itself.
I cannot buy a mac just to sync my ipod, please anyone suggest something that I can and should do. I'm really bugged up. All contents in the ipod is lost now and even the downloaded apps donot show up in itunes as I had done all possible sort of cleanup.
Dell XPS, windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

With the iPod connected to your computer. go to the Summary pane for your iPod and list the storage used for the different categories. The "other" should be less than 0.25 GB but can be very large and to reduce it you need to restore your iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • New Nano Shows only 900MB free space...Why?  Where is the other 100?

My brand new nano show that there is only 900MB free for music, not the 1GB. Why? It is only holding 181 songs, nowhere near the 240. Any ideas?
    Nano 1GB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

only 900MB free for music, not the 1GB.
The apple knowledge base document shows why you lose around 100mb to 200mb on every ipod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60955
In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk.
The ipod operating system and games etc will only account for a miniscule amount of the used space.
This difference wont change how many songs you can get onto your ipod. Bear in mind, the song average advertised on the ipod is based on 4 mins per song, encoded at 128kbps in AAC format.
It is only holding 181 songs, nowhere near the 240.
Bear in mind that the song limit advertised is based on 4 minute per song, 1MB per minute, encoded as 128 kbps in AAC format.
Check the encoding of your songs. To do this, right click one the sorting columns in iTunes tick bit rate, then click this new column to sort the songs by bit rate. Any songs that are encoded at higher than 128 kbps will be causing excess space to be used for storage. To change the bit rate of these songs you can convert them to AAC format (sound quality will be lost). Or you can reimport them from CD/Computer once you have changed the import settings as detailled below, but that could be time consuming.
To convert go to the edit menu, select preferences, click the advanced tab, and select importing. For best song capacity on the iPod, make sure that the encoder is set to "Import using AAC encoder", and "High quality 128 kbps". Hit OK. Then collect together all the high encoded songs and select them all (click the top one and hold shift, then click the bottom one). Right click the highlighted area and go to "Convert selection to AAC". This could take a while if there are many songs.
Once complete, go to the Edit menu, and select "Show duplicate songs". Delete all the "old" songs, recognisable by their bitrate, format or size. Again, to show these, right click a sorting column, and tick the respective ones.
Once this is done, update the iPod.
If your songs are all changed into 128kbps AAC and are mostly all around 4 mins long, then you should get very close to the song limit advertised

    Welcome to the Forums!
This usually results from a failed or interrupted sync. Repeat the sync, and if that does not work, you'll need to Restore your iPod (from within iTunes, summary tab) and then repeat the full sync.
    Hope this helps...

  • My windows volume alias now shows only total drive size, not available?

Recently I wanted to take my FAT32 windows partition and convert it to NTFS. I also wanted to expand the space allocated to that partition. I didn't want to lose certain programs that I had on the windows drive.
Someone on these boards recommended a particular command line that is used to convert the FAT32 to NTFS. Then, from there I could use WinClone to clone the drive, expand it, and then put this image back on.
That all worked fine but now on my Mac desktop, I see the icon/alias for my mac drive and the windows drive. But windows shows only the total allocated hard drive space, not the available space. Is there a way I can have this show available like it used to do?
    Thanks.

I wonder how you did that. AFAIK, this is completely impossible from OS X and can only be done from windows. or do you mean a command line in windows?

AFAIK, OS X always showed just total capacity for bootcamp partition formatted NTFS when you view it on the desktop. I don't know why that is but I've never seen it different. just a hunch but maybe if you make the NTFS partition writable by using NTFS-3g or NTFS for Mac by Paragon it will show used space too. I suspect Finder might be reading that info from some metadata it stores on the drive itself.
    Thanks.

  • How to build a report in Oracle CRM On Demand using the Shared Activities subject area to show only 5 recent activities?

I’m trying to use the Rank function in a report and I’m having issues getting it to work.  I’m using the Shared Activities subject area and would like to rank activities by Contact. Since there are multiple activity association to the users (attendees), I’m not getting the correct ranking order.  Here is what I tried so far…
RANK(Activity."Task Due Date" By Contact."Contact ID")
RANK(Activity."Task Due Date" By Contact."Contact ID", Activity."Activity ID")
RANK(Activity."Task Due Date" By Contact."Contact ID", Employee."Employee ID")
I don’t mind getting the same values for the same dates but the increment should be in sequence.  What I’m getting is 1,1,3,3,5,6,6…  I want to show only 5 recent activities and so need the sequence of 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4… If not date, what else is there to make it unique?  I tried to rank it by Contact Id, Activity Id, Emp Id, etc.  Nothing works!
I have tried other functions like RCOUNT, TopN, BottomN, ect. with no luck.

    Hi Max
Our requirement is to see all the activities for a server in a month ONLY IF there are activities on DIFFERENT dates. So using my example, server2 has activties on 7/1 and 7/14. Then we want to see all the activities for server2 in that month. Server3 has two activities but both activities are on the same date. So we don't want to see server3.
Counting by server will not work because that will include server3 in my example.
What I really want is to be able to count unique occurrences of dates per server in a month. And if this count is > 1, then this server will be in the report.
I used a pivot table to count the unique occurrences of dates by server by month. So using my example, I have this result:
    Server1-July: 1
    Server2-July: 2
    Server3-July 1
What I really want (conceptually) is to be able to filter this pivot table by the matrix column which is the count. I just couldn't figure out how to do that :). Then I thought I could use this report (with pivot table result) as a filter into another report.
    Hope you have some idea....:)
    Thanks

  • Web part created on a subsite for a sharepoint list in another site using sharepoint designer, to show only the subsite's reports. Connection dropping off and showing all the reports

I crated web parts in the sub-sites (we have about 10 subsites) using sharepoint designer from a main list in another site.  Then used web part to show only the  ubsite's reports - using connection to the main list.  Problem is, the connection
is dropping off and showing all the reports on the main list that are confidential.  this has happened 3 time lately.  Could someone explain why it happens some times?  I had to fix it by adding the web part again and connecting it
    Thanks, Subathy.

    Hi George,
If you want to use a top level site "department" list column in all sub-sites, you can go to top level site and create a
lookup type "Site column" to look up the value from the department list, then all sub-sites can use this lookup type site column created in top level site.

Are there apps on your phone right now?
I think one of your apps is causing this.
The only way to find out is to delete them all and then add them one by one to see what app maybe causing this.
Especially if you've gone thru 3 iphones already.
When you restored as new - did you sync back your stuff - apps/music or did you restore from backup?

If you update using iTunes, the full iOS is downloaded. If you update directly on your phone, this is called a "Delta" update, & only the changes to the iOS are downloaded. That's why you see the difference you see.
