BC2.1 Vista 64-bit gone!

I just noticed that the 64-bit version of BootCamp for Vista is no longer on the Apple download site.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/
Some of us contacted their developer center
http://developer.apple.com/contact/
and pointed out that BC2.1 has some issues that are difficult to overcome.
Perhaps a new, universal 64-bit BC2.1 will be released??
I could only install mine by first installing the intermediate BC2.04, discussed elsewhere.
I think this is related to my having installed Vista 64-bit during beta.

I went through all the Apple knowledge Base articles I could find which references Vista 64-bit.
http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=extarticle
When Apple had to release two versions of the Nvidia 8800GT, one for current 2008 Mac Pro, another for older 2006/7 model year, all becuause they used 32-bit EFI in first generation, and 64-bit EFI (which might qualify as UEFI 2.x).
The BC 2.1 32-bit would install, the 64-bit version would not.
It is the same though with having to look specifically for the 64-bit version of iTunes rather than what is offered automatically.
When installing BootCamp drivers (the Apple setup.exe off Leopard, or from BC 1.3 or 1.4) two components, including HAL.dll never install.
I also rounded up KB that stated only three Macs actually have full "official" support for Vista 64-bit, latest MacBook/MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro 2008. The new Penryn iMac should be listed I think, but isn't. Which led me to think that on the specs page for those systems, it should include which Windows OS they support, along with OS X version.
Stuff is scattered all over, and most articles have a lag time, "after the fact" feel to them. ie, What you need to know when choosing a Mac or choosing Windows OS. Putting the cart before the horse.
One person wanted to use 4GB+ of memory, but had settled on using XP Pro 32-bit and would not budge, so having iMac or Mac Pro with 4 or 8GB RAM would not get used or be addressible. But didn't want Vista 64-bit (which is one reason I went looking for clear documentation on Mac model/Windows OS.
I did come across a nice MacRumors Guide "Windows on Mac"

  • Has anyone tried installing BC2.1 for Vista 64-bit in the Safe mode?

Before I go ahead, has anyone attempted to install the BC2.1 64-bit update for Vista using the Safe mode?
The thought occurred to me earlier, and before I bothered, I was wondering if it had been tried yet by anyone?
As with most others with Vista 64 bit, the exe runs, asks for permission and then dies. Not even a whimper

I attempted to install the BC2.1 in the safe mode, but it still did nothing.
In the normal mode, viewing the Task Manager, when I click the update, after a long while the Task Manager shows a message, something to the effect, "BC2.1.exe is waiting for administrator approval."
After I check the box in the approval window that it's OK to run, the warning in the Task Manager disappears and nothing reappears, meaning the process died.
The system logs don't show very much, but I did not bother too much with them.
This is an issue that Apple has to address. I am confident that they will.
Meanwhile I will post a note on the developers board about it.
    http://developer.apple.com/contact/
I presume when it's fixed, the update will show up in the Apple Software Update window, just as the XP update appeared on my other MBP.
Until then, it's just a bit annoying.

  • Windows Vista 64-bit and the Backup & Restore....

I've recently found out that Backup & Restore is not supported by Vista 64-bit.  So, all the backups that did not complete and  has the error message (0x8007002), all the backups are of no use.  All of my documents, pictures, music, original
music materials, etc., are all gone.  Can't even open the error-ed backups!  Can my system be restore to it's original settings before the backup fiasco?  I am at a lost to what can be done!

  • Asus A8N-E / 4GB / Vista 64-bit fi

    My system:
    Asus A8N-E
    AMD X2 4400+ 2.2GHz
    4xGB Crucial DDR-400 (4GB total)
    X-Fi XtremeGamer
    GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB
    Vista 64-bit Ultimate
Up until now all I've managed to get out of my XtremeGamer is a few seconds of barely audible scratches before playback stopped progressing in any audio application.
Tonight I had a spare moment to play with this, so I decided to update my BIOS from 0 to 03. I don't think this actually fixed anything (the only change mentioned is a fix for a POST hang with PCIe x6 graphics cards, which I'd experienced occasionally) but it had the side effect of wiping the BIOS settings.
While setting everything back I noticed two options for "Software DRAM over 4GB Remapping" and "Hardware DRAM over 4GB Remapping". Well, since I have a 64-bit OS I decided to turn them off. Booted up into Vista and my XtremeGamer works absolutely flawlessly.
Maybe this will help someone else, too.

    Well, I don't desperately need 4GB.
2GB wasn't enough to comfortably run Oblivion with the large texture packs, but 3GB is. Only time I've ever gone over 3GB is with Intel C/C++'s interprocedural optimisation feature which, quite frankly, has never done anything useful anyway.
(I'm sure I'll need 4GB eventually but in the mean time - my X-Fi XtremeGamer + Marantz 060 amp + Sansui SE-77 EQ + Grado SR-70 'phones has put me in audio heaven. And it doesn't pick up the god-awful whistle from the nearby GeForce 8800 GTX that my AC97 does!)

  • ITunes v7.6 still NOT working w/Vista 64-bit

    I believe it's not working because AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi WON'T install.
It gives me a "The installer encountered errors before Apple Mobile Device Support could be configured." error.
Is there ANY WAY around this at all?
Also I've installed & uninstalled iTunes v7.6 multiple times now, rebooting between installs also but still no luck.
I've also extracted the 6 installation files out of iTunesSetup.exe and I'm trying to get AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi to install, but it just won't install.
When I start the iTunesSetup.exe package and finish installation, iTunes Setup Assistant also gives me a warning that says "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes."
And under Event Viewer I see this "Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Apple Mobile Device Support. Product Version: 1.1.3.26. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 1603."
Help please! I would really like for iTunes to work with my iPhone!

Well at least up and til today, there never was a solution to activate or even synch Vista 64 bit OS, iTunes, and the iPhone - for anyone, anywhere - period. Not unless you used some VMware solution (which I've heard mixed results on).
This new version of iTunes (7.6) did today for the first time, correct the ability to burn CDs from my collection of music in iTunes. Before this version it wasn't possible.
My Mobile Device Support program did update and install correctly today along with the other apps that got updated. So now I wonder if it is truly possible to activate and synch with an iPhone?!? Anyone try this yet?
Cyanide regarding your install, I had to go through something similar back in one of the earliest versions designed for Vista 64bit OS. The trick is not only uninstalling, but removing all references in the registries, left over file folders, etc. after uninstall. Then begin a clean install.
BUT, it's entirely possible that the iPhone still is still not capable of syncing with Vista 64 bit.
If you think you've had this ability before, than I'm 99.9% sure you only have Vista 32 bit OS.

  • After rebooting my Windows Vista 64 bit system, could not access iTunes; after uninstalling I tried reinstalling, but it has been running for more than 24 hrs. Should I cancel installation?

I had been updating my Windows Vista 64 bit system and as a result of a problem, had to reboot my system. Afterwards, I was no longer able to access iTunes.  I got a message stating that there was a problem with some of the files associated with the application.  A phone rep at Apple's Customer Service provided me with emails linking instructions on completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. I did the uninstall, then checked for lingering iTunes files and couldn't completely remove some, but tried intalling the latest version of iTunes. It has been running for roughly 24 hours.  The status bar is green all the way across, and when I try to cancel, I get the following message: "Are you sure you want to cancel iTunes installation?"  I keep hitting "no," but am staring to wonder if there is a problem with the install.  Should it take this long if I have roughly 134 gigs of music?  I can still see the music in my computer's C drive, so I am worried that there is an error, perhpas because I didn't clear out all the lingering C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ and all the lingering C:\Program Files\iTunes\.  Any thoughts?

It is not just the HP. I have 3 HP computes and 2 Dell computers. 2 of the HP and 1 Dell suffer the iTunes internet block. Took me a while to figure it out also. But, the one thing that is different on the Dell, is that I can leave iTunes installed and not open it and everything works. As soon as I open it, internet access goes down. BUT secure sites (https:) works fine.

  • Windows Vista 64 bit service error on iCloud

I am running Vista 64 bit and trying to log into iCloud and everytime I do I get this message "You can't sign in because of server error" anyone got any ideas?

Hello, I think I can identify with this error. When I attempt to install or uninstall an update for the JRE, the error message pops up, notifying me that a DLL required for this install could not be run. I have successfully installed the newest JDK on my machine running 64-bit Vista, though.
I had an earlier version of the JRE (11) installed prior to this experience, but I could not find the corresponding folder for that install, whether in the Program Files or Program Files(x86) directory. Therefore I suspected that the uninstall failure could be attributed to Windows not being able to find an uninstall package. However, I am also unable to install a new version of the JRE (14), which is quite irksome as I am trying to develop a desktop application with Java.
If anyone has any solutions, suggestions or workarounds for this issue I would be immensely grateful! I had also tried using System Restore but to no avail.

It looks like it's having trouble getting one of the iTunes preference files in. There's a couple in each user account (usually in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes and C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes).
Has a version of iTunes previously been successfully installed on that PC? If so, was it working properly prior to your doing the current installs?
What hard drive is your "Users" folder on? Is it the C drive or somewhere else?
If it's somewhere else, are your Program files also on that other drive or are they on the C drive?

  • Can I install win 8 64 bit OS on dv6936 laptop win vista 64 bit OS

I just purchased the HP Pavilliom 500 destop and would like to upgrade my laptop with desktop OS.
Can I install my hp Pavilion 500 PC win 8 64 bit OS on my hp pavillion dv6936 laptop win vista 64 bit OS

    Hi Ibdman,
You cannot use the Pavilion 500 desktop recovery disks to upgrade the operating system on your HP laptop.
You would have to purchase either: a Win 8 retail upgrade or full install disc to change the operating system on your laptop.
If you are considering upgrading your laptop you should consider Win 7 64 bit instead of Win 8.

  • Convert Website to PDF on Vista 64-bit

    Hi,
using Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 on Vista 64-bit both German versions. In Internet Explorer I see the Acrobat toolbar with all menu items. But regardless what I choose (Convert to PDF, Settings etc.) nothing happens! All other Microsoft Office Plugins work fine. All desired IE-AddOns seem to be there.
For installation I manually expanded the AdobePDF.dll_64 from Data1.cab, renamed it and used it within the installation process. The problem occured both on Vista Business 64 and Ultimate 64 (DVD incl. SP1) which I installed yesterday on a fresh formatted partition.
    Any Ideas? Thanks in advance
    Andreas

Solution: Download a current distribution of Acrobat Professional 8.
    New download: 515 MB
    Original download: 478 MB
With the original distribution I was prompted for the AdobePDF.dll at the end of the installation process. However, with Vista SP1 installed first, neither method of supplying the AdobePDF.dll_64 (renamed of course) or AdobePDF.dll file worked.
Note: If I tried using the *.dll_64 it would give me a javascript error when printing from a web page.
I also replaced splwow64.exe and spoolsv.exe with copies from Vista SP1 distributable. This didn't remedy the problem either.
I did notice that two sets of files were created during the print process:
    00001.SHD SHD File 3KB
    00001.SPL ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash 0KB
The only way to remove these files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS was to issue a net stop command.
    "net stop spooler"
The files are still in use so you must stop the splwow64.exe process (hint: use Task Manager). Then you can delete the files. If you do not delete these files before reinstalling, these files will still show up in the Print Manager.
To restart the printer subsystem, issue the following command: "net start spooler"
I also came across a tech document indicating that a manifest error found in the Event Viewer should be looked at. It suggested that Nero 8 could be the culprit. Hence, I removed Nero 8 completely and used a clean up too as directed (General-CleanTool.zip or General-CleanTool_2_2_0_37.exe). This didn't remedy the problem either.
I then found a tech document that said to install the update Windows6.0-KB930627-x64 ..... (MS quote) Install this update to resolve an issue where the private data of the DEVMODE data structure may be corrupted on a 64-bit version of Windows when using a 32-bit application in raw mode to print a document. (end of MS quote) Since Vista SP1 was installed it was not possible to install this patch.
Also, there was another tech document that suggested that I install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Feature Pack Redistributable Package (x64) .... (aka: vcredist_x64.exe). Once installed, it did trigger an unexpected event. It triggered the installation of MS Office 2003 Service Pack 3 via the Update process. Previoulsy, Vista did not even hint that there was additional download available. How do you like that for bugs in Vista? *sigh*
I previously mentioned in the above postings that this only affected the Internet browsers. However, after further investigation I found I could not print a PDF from any application. This included all the applications under MS Office too.
One other note: After finally finding a solution, I found that Internet Explorer 8 (Beta 2) was not a good choice to use with the PDF Print function. It cuts off the sides of the web page and prints only the first web page. Additional pages are left blank in the final PDF document. Therefore, I removed the update (IE 8 is considered an update by MS).
