Battery energy consumed although connected to power

Recently I noticed that the power connector turned from green to yellow while I was working on my good old Powerbook.
I examined what was going on and here is what happens:
When the Powerbook is disconnected from power and reconnected to it a little later with the battery charge above 95% it consumes power from the battery. The charger LED is green, but the charge is going down (as if there was no power connected). Once the charge is lower than 95% the power connector turns yellow and the battery is charged. When charging is completed, there is no more power consumption from the battery.
This strange behaviour only happens when the Powerbook is turned on or after waking up from sleep mode. If the machine is shut down and turned on again, everything is as it should be (no battery energy is consumed).
I am not sure but I think this has started after the 10.5.6 update.
I tried with a second battery - same effect.
And of course I performed a PMU reset.
This behaviour is a battery killer so I hope to learn what I could try.
Any suggestions?

Hi, LC Vie. Your Powerbook is operating normally. It has always worked this way — it didn't just begin. Nothing is killing your battery.
When the Powerbook's battery is fully charged, it stops charging automatically, even if the AC adapter remains connected. The battery, like any battery, gradually loses charge whenever it's not being charged, even if the Powerbook is drawing its power from the AC adapter. When the charge level drops below 95%, charging automatically begins again, and continues until the battery is fully charged. The charging system is designed to operate this way in order to spare the battery from being trickle-charged (and heated) even when it's nearly full. Heat is an enemy to batteries. If your battery were to be charged constantly the entire time it's connected to AC power, it would be hot all the time, and its useful lifespan would be drastically diminished.

Sleep versus shut down- which saves more energy?

Our school is on an energy-saving kick. One administrator wants us to ask all users to shut down the computers every time that they are done with them, rather than just letting them sleep. This could mean up to a dozen shut downs and startups per day.
My feeling is that this will save very little power, if any. However, the administrator wants hard data. Does anyone have a link for any stats as to the amount of energy consumed by repeated startups as opposed to just letting the computer sleep? How about wear and tear on the power supply possibly shortening the lifetime of the computer?

Seeing as Apple computers generally consume about 5 watts of power when they are in deep sleep the savings probably won't be significant. Regarding wear and tear on the computer, it's about the same as well since a computer coming up out of deep sleep still has to perform most of the same functions as a computer that is starting from a cold boot (spin-up the disk, power-up the monitor, etc.,) short of loading the operating system. That being the case, something could be said about the savings in time between a computer starting from a cold boot as opposed to one that merely has to wake from sleep. There are trade-offs no matter how you look at it.
Therefore, the Energy Saver in System Preferences may present a happy compromise between your concern of constantly starting-up and shutting-down the computers during their regular daily use and your administrators need to try and save energy/lower costs. You can schedule start-ups and shut-downs for the beginning and end of day.
Providing you're not doing this already, just set the computers to shut-down at an appropriate time at the end of the school day and then start-up again in the morning before everyone arrives. You can even skip the start-up so that computers that may not get used aren't started up at all and computers that get used are started-up by the first person to use it that day.

Installed OS X 10.10 which slowed Late 2010 MacBookAir

I've been scouring the Apple forums for tips to improve the performance of my Late 2010 MacBookAir. As many have experienced, after installing OS X 10.10 Yosemite, my MBA performance dropped to a crawl. Hanging up at time with the colorful swirl, slow internet, poor battery performance, unable to multitask as well prior to OS 10.10.
Many tips suggested Uninstalling software like CleanMyMac2 and use FindAnyFile to locate hidden files to delete. Other software like AppCleaner, which I ran. Reset PRAM and SMC, which I did. Turn off some of the energy consuming features found in OS X 10.10, etc… All steps have been performed.
Lastly I ran EtreCheck and didn't get any hits in RED, but here are the results of running that software;

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Lenovo s850 inaccurate battery indicator

Good phone but the battery indicator is inaccurate. It's not very upsetting because the battery last for a few days but the indicator drops and raises chaotically. Most of the time it has a high value. In the last 1/2 hour of life the battery drops suddenly from 40% to 0% without even using the phone, and you are left with an unusable device. I received a couple of updates but the problem didn't disappeared. I bought the phone from Romanian operator Digi and has this versions: S850.ROW.V108, S850_ROW_S211_140923

Lenovo invented a self-contained battery (I can attach screen shots). I do not know why this great discovery have not done public.
Now seriously. I think this is more of a software problem. The statistics of the energy consumed is staggering. Screen 2 hours worked has used 2% and lenovo smart rotation process is used 58% . The company respecting their clients should already remove it.

Lenovo ideapad S400, battery not charging when plugged in

Hi, I had the problem where the battery didn't charge at all even if it was connected in the right way and the charger was plugged in. So I started to search internet for possible solutions. Those I found where to 1) disable alt uninstall ac and acpi adapter in Windows Device Manager. Restart computer.. Not charging problem is related to some Windows issue. 2) Choose the alternative "maximum battery life" in Lenovo Energy management.. Neither worked after several and time consuming tries... The problem here is Lenovos "smart" Energy management system that prevents the computer from charging the battery to "save it".. Solution: Uninstall Energy Management (Publisher: Lenovo) under Program and Features in Windows Control Panel and the problem is solved.. And don't reinstall this **bleep**ty program again....

I should note that this unit is pretty new: purchased in august 2012.

MacBook Power Consumption

We operate tens of macbooks at our campus for student loans. We are trying to cut on the power consumption of the loans operation. I am interested to know how much power does the power brick consume when:
a) nothing is connected to the MagSafe jack.
b) the macbook is fully charged and the LED is lit green.
Please don't guess or think! give me a firm answer if you know. I appreciate that!

I pulled out my 1940s era General Electric Wattmeter. This is a two-coil instrument that measures Vrms * Irms * cos( phase angle) = actual Watts. This type of meter does not measure reactive power that does not deliver energy to the load but circulates in the system. Reactive power is a concern because the out-of-phase current of reactive power does cause energy loss (I squared R loss) by heating the wires carrying the current.
Power brick energized, but not attached to computer - unmeasurable.
Power brick energized, attached to computer, green LED on - about 0.7 Watt.
Power brick energized, attached to computer, OSX booted, but idle - 8 to 10 Watts.
Power brick energized, attached to computer, screen saver running - 8 - 12.5 Watts.
Power brick energized, attached to computer, 5th Element DVD playing - 12.5 -15 Watts.
Power brick energized, attached to computer, Grapher, contours.gcx - 18.5 - 20.5 Watts.
Once in a while, I could get the MacBook to peak at about 25 Watts (averaged by the mechanical dynamics of my meter) of power consumption. The initial plug-in of the power pack to the socket also consumes several amps for a split second - too hard to measure accurately with my crude equipment. There's also a little audible crack! as the prong touches the outlet, so it is obviously a pretty large momentary in-rush of current.
When the power brick is unplugged, the Irms current draw is about 22 mA according to my Fluke 8060A. Presumably that's almost all reactive at close to -90 degrees phase angle relative to the voltage. Switch mode power packs like the MacBook's tend to be capacitive loads. That's about 2.64 VARs of reactive power.
When the MacBook is idling at about 9.5 Watts of real power consumption, the current draw is about 245 mA. The real power corresponds to about 70 mA of in phase current. This gives the surprising result of about 234 mA of lagging reactive current.
In terms of what real-world thing can you do? For 10 to 100 MacBooks, I don't belive it is worthwhile to do anything. Probably remediating the power supply to reduce the reactive current load would be good thing. At industrial scales, factories worry about current phase angle a lot. Power providers bill for reactive current they have to generate, otherwise they would lose revenue by heating their transmission lines, but the customer gets no energy delivered to the manufacturing process by the out-of-phase reactive current.
Probably, the energy consumed and eventual environmental waste generated by remediating 10-100 power supplies, not to mention the engineering hours required, would not offset the power that would be saved over the useful life of the MacBook.
On the other hand, grumbling at Apple to contract with the manufacturer for a greener design for the power pack for the many thousands of users would be a good thing on which to expend a little energy.
PS: just to be sure my Wattmeter is giving reasonable results, I plugged in a "60 Watt" bulb that's been used for about 200 hours. According to the meter, it draws 58 watts.

Power Adapter for 17" MacBook Pro 2.8GHz (Mid 2009)

I'm curious to know if i can use a power adapter from an older 17" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz (Mid/Late 2007) with a brand new 17" MacBook Pro 2.8GHz (Mid 2009). Both are 85w i believe - but i wasn't sure about the new battery with this new computer.

i would like to say, power adapters are of no tricks. They just provide voltage, current, and also the quality of them. When i say quality, it means how stable they can provide. All good functioning power adaptors should have an acceptable quality. So this is not a concern.
Then, what is going on with the "power"? No matter how many watts, there are _*no differences*_. What you have to consider is: unless it cant boot up your system, or it is not capable to charge while you are working (lower watt will just charge slower), or it has some serious problems when you are doing some high energy consuming tasks (like playing 3D games, video converting). Otherwise, the power adaptor is said to be providing enough power, and nothing to be worried about =]

Horizontal black/dotted lines on Apple Studio Display

As of about six hours ago, my screen is suddenly showing several horizontal 1px thick lines at the top of the screen; they are usually black but sometimes change to alternating black and white dotted line when a window is moved around in the area they're covering. They were not there this morning when I used the computer, they just showed up without warning. I've restarted the system to no avail; any suggestions on next steps or ideas of what might be going on here?

It doesn't look to me like the familiar cheese-grater artefact associated with interlacing issue as there's only one break in the image, rather than mismatching alternative lines when there is horizontal motion. I've tried different sequence settings for the field order, with no difference.
I'm wondering if the display is out of sync? It literally looks like the screen has been sliced by a razor 1/3 of the way down, and the bottom part is a different frame to the top. It happens when I scrub through the timeline too, but stabilises once parked on single frame.
By the way, I've also checked that the MBP has switched to the NVIDIA card rather than the slower, less energy consuming Intel video card.

im back AGAIN, with another poser. this is abit o/t but im wondering how i can calculate the energy consumed from my previous calculations and plot a graph of energy vs time, which would be very apt for my cell batterys as im going through loads.
i am measuring the power consumption of WSN's and a 25mm node we have developed here.
i would rather do this in excel, as i would have to re run all my tests on labview again if i was to alter my vi.
i integrate power to get energy, but not sure how to go about this or what formula to use.???

i don't think you could ever protect the jsp code and it wouldn't do you much good to bother anyway, since anyone with a browser can just "View Source" and see all the HTML on the page anyway.
the only thing you would want to protect is your java source. you don't have to distribute the .java files with your application, just the .class's. you could try and obfuscate the .class files, but a determined person will always be able to reverse it back to a .java program and read it. it would take a bit of work and knowhow though, so figure out how smart the consumer is going to be and if they will be able to figure out how to reverse .class files back to .java

Convert IS-U measure M3 to KWH in BW

Dear guys,
there is a requirement to aggregate all divisions using only one measure unit. This should be the target measure unit "kWh".
As there a mixed values of cubicmeter (M3) for Gas and Water, and Kilowatt per hour (kWh) for Energy I am looking for a way to buid a formula to convert Gas & Water to kWh.
The report will be created for a KeyAccount Manager and he just wants to see only one unit. Otherwise there will be a wildcard in the result set of the query due to mixed units.
I tried a unit conversion in BW but M3 and KWH are stored in different dimension so conversion will not take place.
As there is a german keyword "Thermische Abrechnung" (thermic calculation ?) for Gas and a very complex formula for that I need an additional second formula to convert M3 of Water to kWh.
Has anyone done that before ?
As we use IS-U 4.72 and BI7.0 I didn´t find yet a solution for that issue.
Could anyone help ?

You can not convert volume to energy. These two are two different things. cubicmeter measures the volume like the volume of water in a tub. kWh measures the energy consumed by electric bulb, refregirator etc. These are like apples and oranges. So You can not convert volume to energy or vice versa.

ok here is my problem, my batt kept going low kinda quick, so a few nights ago it went dead so i plugged it in to charge after a few min charging it came up with a pic of a battery with a slash thru it so i let it charge all night come the morning no go so i have been looking on forums and heard about the jlcmdr and that didngt work i need help
out of warrenty and want to keep it going so what ideas do yall have

Possible reasons for that
There is one or more energy consuming applications on your device.
The battery is going to die. Replace it with a new one.
If battery is definitely ok - try to wipe the device to clarify the situation:
Backup your device info and wipe the device memory.
Options-Security options- General Settings
select from menu: "Wipe handheld"
after wipe - restore your data back.

Is this overnight usage (email checking i guess) normal?

have 2 imap accounts and a gmail account (set up as exch) which i have set up on a 15 minute fetch. charged it to 100% before going to bed last night and this morning my usage when i checked was 28m usage and 9 hours standby and battery is on 99% --i turn off 3G and use wifi.
those numbers seem about right for a 15 minute of 3 email accounts?

For the most part it is normal but varies based on the amount of energy consumed over the amount absorbed while on a wall charger or car charger or USB charger. USB charger and car charger only recharge half the wattage than a wall charger increasing the chances of lowered power received.
The iPhone is continuously running the same freeze processes for your overnight usage on applications using Fast App Switching, File Transfer Services, and Social Networking (Background Location) updating every push that's done.
Turning off unnecessary pushes (pushes that have never worked or are very annoying to receive) on applications can reduce the amount received. Such as if you don't care to receive CNN breaking news articles you can disable the badges sounds and alerts.
Closing all your active apps also lowers the amount of restepping done in the background. The iPhone is repeating FAS, FTS, and BL processes as I've stated to receive your latest Facebook notification or quickly reload your games to save internet farm crops thereby increasing the amoun of processing done of your 512 MB of RAM.

Storage Card still appears after removing from the Slot?

As, I am facing a new issue with AM335x. I am inserting SD card in slot 0 and trying to boot the device. It boots properly and through telnet I can see the SD Card as a storage Card. But When I remove the SD Card from the slot, still it appears in the telnet
window.
Any specific reason for that handler is not removing the card ???

Annette: Resting the computer on your lap actually makes it run hotter, because your lap is a pretty good insulator and slows the dissipation of heat through the PB's bottom panel. The same is true of any other soft surface. The PB needs airspace underneath it — that's why it has those little silicone-rubber feet. If you want to use it on your lap, set it on a flat, stiff board so the feet can create that airspace. Or buy a laptop cooling pad, with or without a fan built in.
Other facts to note:
A Powerbook runs hotter while its battery is being charged, cooler when it's running on battery power or the battery is already fully charged and AC power is still connected.
It also runs hotter when Classic mode is in use.
Many Dashboard widgets are enormous consumers of processor cycles and generate a great deal of heat. Turn off widgets you're not using.
Spotlight indexing is also a big energy consumer and heat generator.
