Tanya Barber,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Packet failure means no return packet was received before the program you used to ping timed out waiting for a response --- it's a receive failure. Where you trying to ping by a URL (e.g., http://www.somewhere.com) or by an IP number (i.e., 17.254.0.91)? What IP number were you trying to ping? Your ISP, Apple Discussions, CNN, etc.? Try both your ISP and a known-good working site. It's more certain pinging to an IP number than a URL; you can use a WHOIS service (such as this one) to turn your IP URL into a IP number, if your ISP hasn't already provided that.
If you can ping a known-ggod site but not your IP, then their statement that everything looks fine on their end carries as much weight as every other ISP's similar statement, which is to say, none, and you should keep ater them to actually fix their service. if you can ping to an IP but not a URL, your ISP's DNS servers aren't responding.

I wish you the best and hope you will keep us informed of your decisions.  I have two lines that have phones eligible for replacement 9/28/12.  I've read all the rumors but can't find on "My Verizon" any explanation of what options will be open to us.  My bill is a little more than half yours and I too have been with Verizon more than 15 years, I don't like the more money grubbing approach.
I need info that Verizon doesn't seem to want to give me.  I may go elsewhere.
you will have the option to keep your current plan (with the exception of a couple VERY old altell plans i think). however, if you have unlimited data, then you will have to select the 2gig individual data plan ($30/month). if you do this, your bill stays the same, but you have a 2 gig cap on data, as opposed to having unlimited data. your other option would be to switch to the share everything plan (will cost much more on an account with only 2 lines) or a prepaid plan.

  • Apple is selling refurb iPhones, $100 off list price

If you want to run the risk of getting stuck with the iPhone we sent back because the proximity sensor crapped out (that's another story for another time), get ready to grab yourself a deal. Refurbished iPhones now look to be in stock at the online Apple Store, the supposed result of a nice, stiff mix of iReturners and busted devices. Both the 4GB and 8GB refurb units are being offered at $100 off -- $399 and $499, respectively -- making the 4GB model the slightly better value at a full 20 percent off its MSRP. Not a bad discount, as long as they got around to fixing that bum sensor.

The refurbished phones are fully warranted for 1 year and 2 years with Applecare. There is no risk.
And many companies do sell refurbished equipment. Just check some of the PC manufacturers. Check Apple on MACs. If you replace a system or iPhone for nothing then you need to make up for the cost of the replacement product by reselling the refurbished product after it goes through some remanufacturing/corrective procedure.
    I ask:
    1. Why so fast? The iPhone has been on the market slightly over 45 days. It is not like the companies involved in this relationship of not having the where-with-all to withstand the refurbished phones on the shelf for some extended period.
    2. Is AT&T providing refurbs as well? Have not seen anything to verify that.
    3. When products are successful, there is an old saying, "don't eat your own babies" by undermining that product with discounts. The iPhone is doing well from everything I read.
No speculation - just questions and statements and very interesting.

  • $100 off MacBook (student discount) + $100 BBY gift card? True or false?

I've been hearing that in addition to the $100 off students get on Macbooks there is also an additional $100 Best Buy giftcard. Is this true or false? Why is the giftcard being offered and is it offered everywhere? Is it to price match the $100 app card Apple is offering?

This from their Terms and Conditions. It would appear that you would not be elligible to even purchase using the education store to obtain the afformentioned pricing/deal. I don't know why going into a physical Apple Store would relax the policy. That is, unless they simply "overlook" the policy.
    Eligibility
Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education Individuals include faculty, staff, students and parents as follows:
K12 - Any employee of a public or private K-12 institution in the United States is eligible, including homeschool teachers. In addition, school board members who are currently serving as elected or appointed members are eligible. PTA or PTO executives currently serving as elected or appointed officers are eligible.
Higher Education - Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions in the United States; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution in the United States are eligible to purchase. Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale.
Higher Education Parents - Parents purchasing on behalf of their child, who is a student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States, are eligible to purchase.

  • Got Unibody MacBook for $100 off CL but need help!

    Hi there,
I just got an unibody macbook off cl for only $100. It is 2ghz intel core 2 duo, 2 gig of ram, 160 gig hdd, and was loaded with leopard but I just upgraded it to moutain lion. Anyway, Since I got it for cheap so of course it have one problem. It works great most of time but the screen show fizzy (NOT FLICKING) It is hard to explain because I am deaf, but it does fizzy on the screen if I move the hedge. It will go away by itself in few sec but if not then move the hedge then it will go away. I will try to add photobucket image to show you what it look like. Hopefully it will show you. From my research, I was thinking its bad inventer but most of time I noticed macbook's screen was flicking caused by bad inventer but this is fizzy/fuzzy on the screen. Please help! If no luck then I guess I have to drive two hrs round trip to Apple store. Thank you for your time!
It works fine most of time.

Sometime it will go like this

I know the screen is fine because it is not cracked or anything like that but what do you think? Thanks!

You should take the Macbook in for a complete diagnosis at the Apple store. From the images you have posted it would appear there is a problem with the graphics card - not the display. This is a serious issue that cannot be solved by the average user at home.
    Good luck!

  • Student $100 off coupon. Is it good for Macbook Pro?

I have $100 education coupon. It says good for Apple Macbook/Imac. Is this good for use with Macbook pro? Or only MACBOOK?

    Hi again, fanwerks,
I’m not sure why your local store denied the purchase with your coupon, because after testing this myself, it seems the coupon does work on BestBuy.com. What’s the SKU/model number of the MacBook Pro you are trying to purchase, and what store did you visit? I’d be happy to reach out to them on your behalf to see what the discrepancy might be.
I hope to hear from you soon,

  • $100 off Macbook Student Discount Question

I'm going to be a university student in the fall. While I have a .edu address, I do not get my student ID until school startsl. Can I still get this discount? Should I just bring my college acceptance letter and my highschool ID?

    This offer expired months ago.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • I bought MacAir Sep.2 in Apple Store, but there's 100$ off in BestBuy now. ISad

    ISad

    ashish35,
No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.
    Sorry and good luck,

  • CF + Flex 2.0.1 + Server 2003 + (IIS? Apache? My/MS SQL?)

I've been playing with CF/Apache2.2/Flex2.0.1 for a few
months and I finally bit the bullet and bought it all
    (CF/Flex/Server 2003)...and F8 and PSCS2...to finish my,
    unfortunately one-and-only-serious computer (dual 200-series
Opteron). So, until now, I've used the trials of Flex/CF on what I
thought would be the cat's *** OS (XP64) but it blows (sorry MS:()
so I bought Server 2003. After going through the rigamaroll of
registering for the 180 trial originally, I removed 2003 fairly
quickly. But it seems, according to spec, to be the best choice, 32
    bit, for CF.
I've been using a combination of Apache2.2 and MySQL 5 (with
the hotfixes). But now that I have spent my unborn child's RESP
deposit, I want to make sure I'm doing it the right way.
My PLAN is to do the build like this, and I'd really
appreciate any feedback, because over the last few months, I've
found that many things can go wrong.
Server 2003, turn off IIS. Run Apache 2.2. Run CF under that
(Standard edition CF MX7.0.2). And the scary part, never even SEEN,
let alone used, is MS SQL, the free/4Gb limit version.
I don't know if I would be better off to scrap Apache,
because it's been bullet proof for me for years with PHP and MySQL,
and now with CF/MySQL. But what would the best 'occasionally minor
production, mostly non-critical/development' setup be for a Web
Server. I'm not an expert, and I know squat about IIS.
I also would (in ignorance) assume MS SQL is going to run
much better on IIS, and might even not work properly under Apache.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. I've
everything still in the boxes for the worst case (take it back and
    get 'this') scenario.
Would I be saving myself some grief if I asked a pro to come
in and do it, for a fee?
It's strictly for my personal development at this stage, but
I'd like to get some jobs, maybe hosting 1-2 semi-serious apps that
in one case at least (for my employer), will need to be secure
(Financial services regulation for a Members-only Site, i.e.,
sensitive financial data entered on a pre-production server at work
for which my system would serve as the development system, most
    likely with live data).
My PERSONAL aim is a fully db-driven, fully-Flex/F8 and fully
CF set of sites, along the lines of hosting the pet projects I have
for my photographer friends. I want my galleries to be among the
best on the net, bar none.
Sorry for the very long post, I am just staring at all these
boxes, and am afraid to even open Server 2003 or look into IIS/MS
SQL until I hear from some of you who might have something pithy to
    say.
    Thanks for baring with me.
    Shawn.

    >>That data base is fine for a development environment.
    Thanks edbrendel.
So, since I am able to run Apache 2.2 as I want to, would I
be better of to use MySQL 5 or MS SQL Express if I want it to be
largely development, but also for my own stuff (my galleries etc.)
actually running pages served to the web?
I know of the technotes, a couple of them (incl. the MySQL
note on installing V. 5 as a datasource and all that), but never
saw that one...so thanks very much. I've manually added the Apache
2.2 file line in httpd.conf and added the file in the config area,
which always worked in the past with XP Pro and XP64...hope it does
with 2003 I had 2003 server when I first started playing, it was a
nightmare, I hope now that I've bought everything I can wrap my
head around it!). I just make sure I don't try to configure CF
until after manually adding the files, and changing the Apache
config file and restarting. Then I go into the administrator for
    the first time.

  • Migrating dns from windows 2003 to windows 2008 on workgroup env

Hi, We are planning to migrate primary dns server from win 2003 to win 2008. Both the old and new servers will be in work group. I have found few articles on how to proceed.
    1. Configure new dns server 2008 R2 box as a secondary zone and doing a zone transfer for froward & reverse lookups  from the primary Server 2003 machine. Then changing the name and IP of the Server 2008 R2 machine  to
what the Server 2003 box was (after pulling the Server 2003 box off the network) as well as setting the 2008 R2 box as the primary. Neither of the servers will be connected to a domain at any point during or after this process.
    2. Copy registry keys and dns files from old to new server
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DNS Server\Zones
Right click on the “Zones” node and choose “Export“. Save the export as a .reg file (e.g. DNS.reg).
Copy the DNS.reg file to the destination server and “Merge“.
    Copy the DNS files
Copy the contents of the %SystemRoot%\System32\DNS folder from the source machine to the same folder on the destination machine. I received an permissions error while trying to transfer the “Samples” folder. It is not necessary to transfer the samples.
    Set the DNS Load method
Using the Administrative Tools -> DNS MMC snap-in, on the “Advanced” tab, set the “Load zone data on startup:” to “From registry“. This tells the DNS server to load all zone data from the registry.
Then change the ip address and hostname of the new server to match that of the old ones and start dns service.
I was wondering which method would be easy and hassle free as I have like 23 zones to transfer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lakshmi Soma

I would go with the first method as I always try to avoid making registry changes which might result in strange behaviors.
