Beach ball and occasional restart message (kernel panic warning)

Hello,
I'm getting ready to start an editing project on FCP using my G5. I'm running into general use problems in that everything I do seems to initiate the beach ball. I now have two FW drives hooked up with my video for the project which seems to making everything even slower. Today I came back into the room with a restart the computer sign. It was the kind that is issued when you have a kernel panic. I know this because I lost the hard drive to my G4 a few years back due to a kernel panic. This has happened on the G5 a couple of times and luckily I have been able to restart and get everything going again. Everything is still slow going and now running FCP is very. The computer takes too long to respond to even basic editing commands such as scrubbing through in the browser. I'm thinking it might be a RAM issue. I'm currently at 1.5 GB DDR and know that optimally I want 2. Before I go purchase more RAM I just want to be sure I've taken care of additional details that could make my system run faster and more efficiently without the constant beach ball and restart messages.

Hi Steve,
Here is the complete panic log. I thought this might be easier to give you the whole thing rather than cherry pick.

  • Spinning beach ball and a restart

During the past two days, I've got three spinning beach balls that just won't quit. So I had to resort to pressing that little button on the fron of my G4 tower for a restart. After that, everything is back to normal. Each time it happened when trying to either open or close a folder (different each time).
    The console logs this:
Oct 30 08:46:19 (xxx)s-G4 /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer: FSFindFolder failed for domain -32762: 0x-43. Now relying on persistent store for said domain.\n
I tried googling but couldn't find anything useful. Does anyone here know what it means?

Do you mean a physical problem?
I don't have DiskWarrior, and Disk Utility says there are no problems. I purchased the HD just this week, and before installing anything onto it, I erased it using DiskUtility's "zero out" option.
Just an hour ago, I had another problem with it. The computer had gone to sleep, and when I awoke it, the mouse cursor could move alright, but nothing happened when I tried clicking on things.
Anyway, I've sent a mail to the seller, and am awaiting a reply. It's Friday afternoon, so I probably have to wait till Monday. In the meantime, I'm re-migrating the system back to the old HD.

  • I am having trouble with a LaCie 526 monitor working with my new Mac Pro.  When I boot up, I see the sign-in screen for a second, then it disappears, reappears with some of the screen pixelated and the spinning beach ball -- and then freezes. Any thoughts

The LaCie is connected via DVI to thunderbolt adapter.  It had been working, and then when I switched off the computer and restarted several days later, I see the signon screen flash quickly, followed by nothing, followed by the signon screen and spinning beach ball and it simply freezes.  Any thoughts?

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Every time I click print in Pages I get the beach ball and my mac freezes.

I just updated to the newest version of pages and every time I click print in pages I get the beach ball and my mac freezes. Any suggestions on fixing this? I've tried shutting down and restarting several times...nothing seems to be working and I'm loosing/wasting time trying to fix this...

    Hey there nmiller0528,
It sounds like you are unable to print from Pages at all from your computer. I want to recommend troublehsooting the Mac OS for print issues with this article named:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Spinning Beach Ball and computer freeze

Tonight I continually receive the spinning beach ball. The computer freezes and I need to do a hard shutdown. I have run repair permissions several times. I do receive the modified and no repaire messages. I have traced message lines on the forum and it does not appear to be a serious issue. However, it does not change the fact I repeatedly get the spinning beach ball and after some period of time need to do a hard shutdown. At first this took place in Aperture only, but it did he same thing in other applications as well.
Any thoughts? What do I need to do to resolve the issue?
    Thanks

  • Beach balls and lock ups

ep... need some help with my issues that have been going on for a while.
turning off time machine reduced the temporary lock ups, but they still occur.
also have done a complete reinstall of leopard... issues still occur.
    my setup... a mac pro.
programs randomly lock up, show a beach ball and force quits do not respond very quickly (sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to get out of the stall).
    adium, handbrake experience frequent stalls.
ical and fontbook won't open at all... just beachball and eventually quit.
firefox crashes about 2-4 times a day.
    terminal is very crashy.
what can i do to solve these issues? i'd gladly reformat but the archive & install (without importing settings) barely improved the situation.
thanks for your time & effort to all those that assist...

holy crap i removed all the windows truetype and font fork (eh?) files from my system and fontbook now loads.
i had a feeling it was font related, but things are looking up...
    will post more findings...

  • Beach Balls and freezes after installing Safari 3.1 and security update

    Hi,
I just recently installed the safari 3.1 update and the security update. My machine is an iMac 2.4 GHz with 10.5.2. Prior to this, the machine only had one freeze (had to power off) which happened a about a month back. Since the update, 2 days ago, the machine seems to show the beach ball more often. On one specific occasion (happened when my son was using it), the Chess game was running, and the mouse cursor turned into a beach ball and everything froze - can only move the mouse cursor/beach ball but nothing else responded. Even hitting the caps lock key took minutes before the caps lock light came on. Me being a windows user for a long time, I was blindly trying to find the keyboard equivalent of ctrl-alt-del to pull up a process list of some kind so that I can kill the offending app. But was not successful, hence I had to power off.
On another occasion, and this time, it happened to me - the beach ball came up as I was using safari. I could use other stuff in the OS, but any time I brought the cursor over safari, it would turn into a beach ball. After waiting a few minutes and clicking away on the safari window, the beach ball turned into a finger cursor when I clicked on the http address window - and safari started to work like normal again.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had experiences similar to this and if there are any steps I can take to prevent this again.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Did you perform both updates at the same time? I usually recommend doing them one-at-a-time, so if anything happens you know which update caused the problem.
I especially never do a system update with any other update. I always do that one last, and wait for the dust to settle by reading this board first.
You should run DU and check the HD and repair permissions. That's a start.

  • 2006 Intel Mac mini starts to load then turns off and sometime a kernel panic warning will appear

Mac mini starts then powers off before loading osx and sometimes gives a kernel panic warning

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

  • ICloud mail is down again...mine allows mail to open, then when trying to address an email I get a beach ball and it stays until I quit mail.  Anyone experiencing this and what is apple doing about this?

I like many have been experiencing mail problems since I migrated to iCloud.  Was working fine for a bit, then I now either get crashes or a revolving beachball when I attempt to type an email address.  Have tried quitting and rebooting...you name it.  What is Apple saying or doing to fix the problem.  Been like this all weekend.

iCloud mail is down again...mine allows mail to open, then when trying to address an email I get a beach ball and it stays until I quit mail.
That doesn't necessarily mean the mail is down in iCloud.
You can always check iCloud system status here.
If you are using Safari to access iCloud.com, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
Now go the menu bar again and click Safari / Reset Safari.
Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
Quit then relaunch Safari, go to iCloud.com
    Try Mail.

  • When i open final cut pro x  when it starts loding the projects it shows the spining beach ball and is stuck wat can i do?

when i open final cut pro x  when it starts loding the projects it shows the spining beach ball and is stuck wat can i do?

Possible  corrupted project or media fies. Here's what I'd suggest.
First trash preferences. If that doesn't work…
Move your Final Cut Projects folder into a folder named Hidden Folder. See if FCP then launches. If it doesn't hide your Final Cut Events folder. Once FCP launches successfuly, create a test event and project.
To track down the problem, successively move load events and projects from hideen to their proper location and open FCP. When and if you get the crash you have hopefully located the problem.
The easiest way to do this is to purchace Event Manager X ($5).
    Good luck.

  • 27 ", late 2010, iMac won't boot after turning on. Spinning beach ball and white screen.

Probably a relatively simple fix, or series of steps, that will return it to normal.

    BD,
It's been a while, but I have since upgraded RAM to 12Gb and gone to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything has run well until recently. Time Machine will not function on a new Seagate, 1TB GoFlex external HD,even though it was properly formatted and HFS journaled. Seagate techs said it seems to be a failing drive, yet it works perfectly on my laptop, a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion.  The drive completes less than 10% of the backup before it locks everything up on the iMac with the spinning beach ball and a gray screen.  Left it that way for two days and no change.  Removed the drive physically and the iMac works just fine. I am baffled and really a bit frustrated here and wonder if you, or anyone else, has an idea about correcting this? I am suspecting that there is something deeper in the system going on than I am seeing.
I have run a verification of Disc Permissions/Repairs and keep getting this coming up:  "Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x ."
That keeps coming up every time and is not fixed.  I don't know if that has anything to do with that.
    Baffled...

  • TS3742 Installed Cisco Linksys VUSB.  Now my MacBook Air restarts and I get a kernel panic

Bought a new Cisco Linksys router a few weeks ago.  Had to install their VUSB to manage the peripherals.  Now I keep getting this panic message and my MB Air restarts whenever I log out. How do I fix this?

    Same issue here.
If Cisco VUSB is running (in the dock) when the Macbook Air goes to sleep, when it awakens a kernel panic occurs every time.  Now I've had to set Cisco VUSB to not launch upon startup to ensure I don't forget about it when putting my Macbook Air to sleep.  Very annoying.
    Thread on CISCO\Linksys forums: http://community.linksys.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/VUSB-OS-X-10-8-2-and-Auto-Conne ct/td-p/620126
I'm on 10.8.4... and this is Cisco VUSB 1.2.0 (SXUPTP Driver 1.10.0).

  • Mail produces Beach Ball and big lag... why?

I seem to be having a few issues since upgrading to Yosemite.  One that is particularly annoying is that whenever I open Mail, it takes the better part of a minute to appear on the screen, and then when I click on an email, the Beach Ball appears... sometimes it stays for a minute, sometimes several minutes.  It eventually goes away and I can read the email.  But should I select another email, it starts all over again.
My iMac is a late 2007 24" Aluminum, has 6GB or RAM, 500 GB HDD of which 175 GB are free.  I don't seem to have any issues using Adobe CS4 Photoshop or Illustrator, and as I do a lot of design work, I'm trying to keep as many big graphics files on my attached NAS and/or USB HDDs.  But Mail is a problem since I'm constantly sending reduced size draft files of graphics work as attachments for clients to review.
Figured I'd Include an EtreCheck Report:
    Problem description:
Opening Mail is very sluggish since Yosemite upgrade, and opening an email causes Beach Ball to spin for 1-5 minutes.  Mid 2007 iMac7,1 Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 800 MHz Bus, 500 GB HDD w/175 GB Free.

    Linc...
I was able to start Step 1 last night before going to sleep.  Came down this morning and Terminal was back to the normal name followed by $.  Tried opening an email and while its definitely faster than a few days ago... its still ponderously slow with the Beach Ball appearing again when I went to Reply and clicked on the Paper Clip, opening Finder, and selecting an image.  I do apologize for posting lengthy tests but I guess thats the only way we'll resolve this.  This post is a list of a simple task... Open Mail, Select an Email, Select Reply, type one word, then Select Paper Clip to attach a small 500 KB image.  So I did do Step 2 but ran the Console App again so you can see whats going on.  I noticed an interesting thing... Utility Icon is not showing up in Launchpad.  I meant to ask you about that yesterday, but its probably unrelated.  If you want me to do Step 2 just say the word.  I think we're making progress slowly, but perhaps this dialogue will help someone else bc when I Google "Beach Ball in Mac Mail" I see tons of people complaining.  Thanks again for your patience and help.

  • Help!!! Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and I have a kernel panic!

Upgraded my MacBook Pro 15" from Lion to Mountain Lion and I get the following kernel panic at each restart:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff8000540a4f): Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 2"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.26.8/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546

    Then the backtrace fllowed by:

    Mac OS version:
    Not yet yet set
    Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 11.4.0: Mon Apr 9 ...
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Youssef

Ok, ressetting the PRAM did the trick for me. I should have read a similar thread about a kernel panic after installing Mountain Lion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/19020046#19020046) :-(
It's now installing the OS. Crossing my fingers!

  • Spinning beach ball and no Finder icons

I am trying to troubleshoot this problem:
My brother was trying to move a lot of JPGs (3,500 of them!) by dragging from one folder to another, but he missed the target folder and they started appearing on his desktop. The only way he could think of to kill the process was to Restart.
After restarting, the system seems to load normally EXCEPT all the icons on his desktop are missing (including the ones for his hard drives) AND the Finder cursor is the spinning beach ball.
Mail, Safari, etc, will load and function normally, but he can't use the Finder. Activity Monitor shows the Finder using high 90s of %CPU.
So far we have tried: Restarting in Safe Mode, Repairing permissions, and running Disk First Aid from the Install DVD - with no problems found and no helpful results.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    gw

    HI Gary,
Besides trashing the Finder plist file which would have been my first idea first also, try deleting this one too: com.apple.desktop.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Your Mac will create new pref files for you.
Also.. thought of something else. Go to a clear space on your Desktop so it says Finder in the Menu. Now click Command + Option + Esc on your keyboard. A Force Quit window will open. Select Finder in the list and click Relaunch.
*** Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible) ***
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
