Beach Ball when play back...why?

Hi, has any one had this problem?
When I press space bar or the play button in both the Viewer and the Canvas I get a spinning beach ball, it spins for about 1 or 2 minutes, then play back starts normally...This is something new to me, I never had this problem before. I re-installed Final Cut, I am on 7.0.1, I have a 2X2,8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon MacPro, with 7GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM, and my hard drive is a 16TB RAID from Maxx Digital. It does not mater if I am editing RED footage, or plain simple DV, or just sound (AIF), it does the same thing, which is really annoying... Any one have an idea?
What could be happening? This started suddenly, I have done nothing different to my computer, and I don't think I have installed any software lately that would affect this...Could it be Time Machine??? As I have noticed that when this happens, Time Machine is busy backing up.
Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi
Yes
• *Time Machine* - I have this turned off during edit sessions
• Spotlight - also turned off during editing
• *File Vault* - also turned off - always
• free space on boot hard disk - never less than 25Gb SD-video editing (5-6 times more for HD)
• No internet or other processes in background.

Why do I get the spinning beach ball when I try to change from Events to Photos.  How do I fix it?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • Spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3

im reading the posts about audio encoding problems with idvd and
i get spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3
right after i click the import button. wondering if this is a part of that problem. im not at the encoding phase. actually im trying to make the simplest dvd in the world. 1 picture and 1 song on the main menu-thats it. i have it set to "best quality" so it doesnt encode in the background-so says the idvd help menu. when i click import or drag the song file into the window (tried it many ways) i get infinite spinny beach ball. dont know if im waiting long enough before i force-quit, about 10 mins. didnt think this would be too hard for the machine to do considering im not burning yet, i just opened the program and this is the first thing i tried to do. any help??? i have a intel mini 1.66 with 2 gb ram, 10 gb free on hd, OS 10.4.9, and using a 23gb imovie file for the video. i didnt try plist deleting or reinstall yet because this is the only problem ive had. repaired permissions, checked the drive with disk utility. ran software update, nothing. nada. HELP!!!

i figured it out last night. idvd doesnt like .aiff's on my machine, maybe because its an intel. i converted it to apple lossless and it worked fine, it imported instantly. .mp3 and .m4a fine as well. i dont know why it wont import an .aiff, maybe because its an intel??? dont know. everyu time i try any aiff file on my machine, idvd does the spinny beachball forever. i even tried to reinstall idvd and that didnt work either, so i gave up and converted it to lossless.
to clarify, im just trying to make a simple dvd with my imovie footage, a main menu picture and 1 song to play on the main menu. i wanted to use the .aiff instead converting it to .mp3 because i didnt want to lose any quality. i guess apple lossless is good enough... whatever, just glad it works now. maybe ill be able to burn the dvd sometime this month, and im ready for the problems that will come when i try to do that. from what i hear i have to pack a lunch. everyone is saying ill have to mow my lawn by the time its done. that *** and not looking forward to that.

  • IPhoto hangs/freezes/beach balls when printing TIFF: solved

I was having a problem today with iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) on Mac OS X 10.9.3: iPhoto is freezing/hanging/beach balling when printing TIFF images.   I can effortlessly re-create the problem by selecting a specific TIFF image (from a Nikon D700) and attempting to print to my HP LaserJet m451dw (over the network).
The problem occured on the iPhoto print screen.  I was able to select 1 or more images to print and then select the print size (e.g. full, contact sheet, etc...) however when I click the Print button at the bottom of the screen iPhoto would hang.  Normally the printer dialog would appear.
I am using the latest Mac OS X 10.9 drivers from HP (Jan 2014) and printing from other apps such as Word worked.
I had tried the following with no luck: completely rebuilding the iPhoto DB; removing and reinstalling the printer; removing the iPhoto preferences.
The solution in the end was to rotate the TIFF image.  The wife had rotated a number of images  to portrait mode for a contact sheet but could not print.  After mucking about with the problem TIFF image I rotated it around back to landscape and it is now working.
I hope this helps someone else experiencing the same problem.

The reason I asked about the format of the disk is that folks report issues with Libraries stored on disks that are not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Terence could you tell me more? I have not found the corresponding post.
I have a huge (10K photos, 50GB) library on a RAID server under linux formatted as ext 2.
I am not a designer playing with fonts.
After I upgraded to iPhoto '09 from the DVD, it converted my library and I started to look at the animation which crashed in the middle (face recognition was running in the background).
Any attempt to restart iPhoto failed (empty window with spinning wheel).
Then I downloaded the last version of iPhoto.
I restarted from a clean copy of the iPhoto library.=>Same failure.
I try to rebuild everything (except the database which was not an option).=> same failre
I copied a smaller iphoto library on the local hard disc => it works.

  • My "older" songs stutter when played back

my pc is only 6 months old, but the first songs i downloaded from the itunes store
"stutter" when played back. they don't stutter on my ipod, and the more recenlty
downloaded songs are also ok. i have deleted them, reloaded from the ipod, updated
itunes, all to no avail. any ideas?

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.
Regarding the encoding, I have tried going from native HDV MPEG-2 to H.264 at 720P from 10 to 4 MB at 24, 30 and 29.97. The Mac seems to play everything back very well, but most PCs (the latest IBM T 40 – 43 series laptops) a couple of Dell desk tops (2.6 GHZ with 64 and 128 MB graphic cards) and a 3.2 GHz Shuttle PC with a 128 MB graphic card (that we routinely use to decode four MPEG-4, 4CIF images simultaneously and display on a 42” ED Plasma) choke/stutter to varying degrees with processor utilization hitting 100%.
So, the real issue here is what is the difference between a 720p trailer that I can download from Apple and what I can output using Compressor 2 at a similar data rate – other than the frame rate?
And why does the Compressor output stutter on most PCs?

  • "Dropped Frames on Playback" - when playing back FCP's Bars+tone

We've been having a problems with one of our edit suites dropping frames when playing back to tape (Edit to tape).
In checking it out, I created a new project and added DCP's PAL Bars and tone to the default sequence. FCP is stopping playback with the "Dropped Frames on Playback" error after 13"-15". I've tried all the usual stuff - trashing FCP prefs, zapping PRAM, repairing preferences etc.
    Has anyone any further suggestions??
RT is set to Safe, with dynamic frame rate and video quality.
The Mac is a Dual 2.66GHz Dual Core Xeon, 4Gb RAM, with an AJA kona lhe card, connected to an XServe Raid via fibre. The tape deck is a DigiBeta M2000.
I've read all the posts I could find, and checked Shane's stock answer #12.
    Cheers
    Steve

Try creating a new user, log into that and test FCP.
In my case, a new user worked, for awhile.
Through a lot of trial and error and a reinstallation that was ineffectual - properly surmised by a very learned friend of mine, Mr. Sheffield - I found a project to be corrupt. So thoroughly corrupt that it would corrupt FCP and any projects opened downstream which is why my new user worked for awhile. Took me some time to figure out the proper order to open things after a system restart. Looks like I'll be doing a rebuild of the project through xml which shouldn't take to long.
In your case, if a new user doesn't help and you go the reinstallation route, uninstall FC Studio with this jewel of a utility. Many thanks to Jon for writing and distributing. http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/fcsremover_1.0.6released.html

  • Spinning Beach Ball when turning off Airport WiFi.  SL Issues, many!  Help!

I performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my new 13 inch late 2009 MBP on release date. All of a sudden, I am getting the infamous spinning beach ball when attempting to disable my Airport wifi. It's so bad, that I am not able to gracefully restart my system. Seriously this is getting out of hand. Snow Leopard was supposed to make Leopard even more stable.
Steps I have taken, not in any particular order.
    Verified and repaired permissions.
Ran HW test, no issues found
    Reset PRAM
    Deleted wifi related plist files from /lib/prefs/sysconfig and rebooted;
The only thing I can think of next is to perform and Archive and Install or....
...As much as I would hate to go back, Install Leopard.
I would appreciate feedback or suggestions as what to do. Looks like 10.6.1 may be worth waiting for. Oh how I miss Tiger.

    HI,
If you use an Airport Base Station or Airport Express, try resetting.
    If that doesn't help...
Boot from the 10.6 disk and verify the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
    Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
If necessary, do an Archive an Install. It's the only install option available for Snow Leopard.

  • Iphone 5 video, not smooth when played back in iPhoto?

Why are my videos all 'stop start' when played back in iphoto? Is it something to do with the size of the file it seems to be happening on video shot on 1920 x 1080 which is when I got my iphone. Are hey going to be ok when i place them in imovie?

Sorry, maybe I don't understand or I didn't explain my problem properly.
(I'm doing this project as a hobby so can't really afford external resources)
The demo involves filming industrial equipment, which is being monitored by a PC.
As the equipment runs, graphs and results are produced on the PC.
I managed to capture this, but when importing it into FCP AND playing it back, the picture is not clear. but when I forward frame by frame, each frame is nice and very sharp.
Could it be frame rates or?
I've seen many educational videos that show computer screen shots and I am prepared to pay for software that captures these shots, if that would help.
I don't really know how a "scan" would work.
Or maybe I'm dreaming that I can do this relatively easy.
    Thanks for your answer.

  • 720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows

720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows
I have an interesting problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
I have several short videos (2-4 minutes) in 1080i HDV that I have edited in FCP. When output to 720P 30 H.264 in Compressor at either 10 or 6 MB they look just drop dead gorgeous when played back on either of my dual processor Macs.
However when played back on a Windows machine with QuickTime 7, they stutter to the point that playback locks up. This happens on 1.5 GHz to 3.2 GHz P4 class machines with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and 64 to 128 MB video cards. On the 3.2 GHz P4, the processor utilization peaks at 100%. The interesting thing is that all of these same Windows machines have no problem playing back 720p 24 trailers at 6 MB.
    Thanks all.

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.

  • I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old sys parts

I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight (iMac5,1) to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old system parts. I have zapped PRAM. The blue indicator in system audio panel will appear for a second as I slide the bar for internal mic but then it disappears. Is there a fix?

The sound seems very faint but can here static on playback.

  • Audio Clicking and broken up when playing back from timeline

Can anyone please give me some advice about a possible solution to a continuing audio problem I am having when using the Tascam Fireone with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. (Fireone working well with Logic 7 on the same machine)
    The Symptoms are as follow:
When playing back edited clips or music from the timeline there are constant ugly pops and clicks.
Any audio or video and audio even with differing sample rates when played in the source monitor are unaffected and play perfectly.
I have tried everything I know and am now at a total loss as to what to try next.
Tascam's so called support ignore any communication from me about it, as do most people on this forum.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thank you

I think it is a driver issue between Tascam and Apple Firewire connections
It's all very frustrating as Tascam just do not respond to support questions well.
Thanks for your comments, it's back to the drawing board with the Fireone and Final Cut Pro, a great shame because it's cheap and very good with Logic.

  • Picture breakup when playing back recordings of HD...

As above really, only noticed this since the latest software change but my be coincidental.
I have recently had picture breakup when playing back reordings on BBC1HD and Ch4HD, when I watch the channels live there is no evidence of the breakup and if I check the signal strength on both channels I am getting Signal strength of 78% and quality of 100%
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions for solutions please?
    Thanks

I think that is what he is saying Alex...
If you think about what I tested, the model seems pretty right...  Delete the room, it does not delete the file from webdav...  So, when the room is re-created, it will play back original content so looks like they are not storing room historical data, i.e. is there a recording, how long etc....
I think it is an great solution to be able to remove completed rooms and FMS pick the old room up from webdav on the fly.  Seems the most logical option.
Nigel, I don't suppose there is any solution of sending the recording to Amazon S3 or other cloud resources rather than the webdav folder?  I think, for those with thousands of recordings, storage could become an issue...  I have looked at the possibility of mapping my box to the S3 bucket but then I am reteiving it to send it to you every time a file is requested which could cause bandwidth issues...
Maybe integrating some sort of API where when setting up the recording, we provide specifics (i.e. an authentication token), to allow the file to be placed there?  Or maybe a slightly different approach would be to provide a cloud front url for picking up the files and the transfer could go on behind the scenes....  Also with the cloud front, distribution would be much quicker as the files could end up closer to the location of the FMS which in turn would create a richer experience with less waiting...
    Anyway, maybe you can advise.
    Thanks for your time.

  • When playing back stills, how do I turn off the G..D...n zoom?

When playing back stills in imovie, how do I turn off the G..D...n zoom? I just want it to show stills, STILL, zoom-effects do not go well with a serie of meditative fotos of sculptures.... thank you. Anyone?

    Hi
    It's called Ken-Burns effect.
Click on one photo in Project.
Then You see a small cogg wheel like symbol
    - click on it and a menu opens where at bottom You can
    - select Crop/Ken-Burns/Rotation - select it
Now in Viewer/Canvas at top set Size (Adjusted) from Adjust/Crop/Ken Burns menu - now the picture will show in full and no zoom.
As You see - there is a linguistic barrier when not having an English version of iM.
