Beachball spinning  constantly in apps

I do a lot of HD recording. Recently, as I work on a project I get the spinning beachball that freezes everything for about 10 seconds - I hear the drive crunching - then everything returns. Its very random...It may happen every time I click on a button, or scroll a page...then it won't do it for a few minutes, then it might happen 3 or 4 times in a row.It is extremely annoying and is killing my workflow.
I have a 5 yr approx old G5 1.8 w/ a 160 drive that is well over half full.
Do I need to de-frag?? I know OSX is not supposed to need it but it really reminds me odf the OS 9 days when the drive got messy.
It also does it in other apps..
Also I have turned 'journaling'; OFF in a utility...this was after the BB spins in an attempt to stop it. Does this affect Mac swapping?
Thanks for any help!!
SP

Hi SP, it's OK to turn Journalling off if you manually Repair the HD if you ever have a crash or such.
I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

I don't understand why a save or open dialog needs to spin that drive up, +before I give it any indication that I am going to access it.+
Actually, what needs to be accessed depends a lot on the context. For instance, an open dialog in an app that can only open certain kinds of files must check file extensions or other file metadata before it can show which items it can open. If in Finder windows or open or save dialogs you are in a view that shows an open subfolder hierarchy (essentially anything besides icon view), the items may need to be accessed to fetch metadata about them before they can be displayed. Even in Finder icon view, view settings to show icon previews or item info may require access. At the least, the permissions must be checked before anything can be accessed.
Much of this is cached temporarily, so that recently accessed folders don't need to be accessed each time you return to them, but the info is discarded after a while to prevent it hogging large amounts of memory.
IOW, even though you don't think of it as such, you are often accessing a lot of stored metadata info just by opening a Finder window or open or save dialog. You can minimize this by avoiding contexts that display it, like by closing folders in hierarchal views before accessing them again & choosing the minimum view options for Finder windows, but you will probably find this tedious, limiting, & a much more primitive way to use your Mac.

  • Only Apple Logo and beachball spinning after restarted

After force shut down. I try to restart my Macbook Air (OS X10.6) , it only appeared Apple logo and beachball spinning. It was spinning over 30 mins....
    What can I do?

Try booting in Safe Mode (hold Shift key down when booting) and/or run fsck.
    Run fsck.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
    4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.

  • Finder has heavy CPU usage: Causing fan to spin constantly

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard. The upgrade went perfectly. The only thing thats annoying me is that the FINDER is causing heavy CPU usage which is causing my MacBook's fan to spin constantly. I've figured out that the problem is most likely FINDER from the Activity Monitor (I've found that stopping finder eventually causes the fans to spin down and eventually stop.)
Are other people having this problem, let me know? Is apple aware of this problem and will they fix it?

    Hi
I'm not sure whether this helps, but I've noticed that having icon preview switched on (View - Show View Options) can result in a significant amount of CPU usage if you open a folder containing a large number of files, or a small number of movie files etc. On my older Mac, opening a folder containing a handful of WMV files can result in 20 seconds of 50% CPU usage, as it attempts to replace each generic icon with a content specific icon. I have a hunch it's actually opening QuickTime (and Flip4Mac) transparently in the background to capture a frame from each movie and use it as the icon. In the end I switched icon preview off - by default it seems to be on in Leopard. I guess it's most likely to affect older Macs and laptops, in terms of the CPU percentage required. It also seems to result in a fair bit of disk activity as well, again most likely to affect laptops.

  • My macbook 10.6.8 keeps stalling and the beachball spins on endlessly.  What is wrong and what can I do?

    Hello,
For thwe last weeks my macbook has been stalling and the beachball spins endlessly. Is this a hardrive issue? What should I do?
    Thanks for help.

Did you try repairing the disk permissions under Disk Utility?
If that doesn't help I would recommend you backup your files and do a fresh install of Snow Leopard (meaning you have to boot the Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to format the hard drive before proceeding).

The wheel beside the mailbox spins constantly and I can send or receive mail.
On top of this my recovered files keep appearing and so do deleted drafts.
    help please

I can almost guarantee that your Mail isn't configured correctly. Sometimes, changes in the ISP can cause your Mail to go haywire; other times, a system update may do it.
In my experience, the most efficient way to taking care of this is:
    1. Print out your settings for each of your accounts. While the info may not be 100% accurate, it's information you should have.
    2. Open Mail, and then Mail Preferences/Accounts.
    3. Highlight an account (if it isn't already), and use the minus ( - ) sign to delete it. Do the same for the other accounts. Now, there aren't any Mail accounts listed.
    4. In the part of the screen where you used the minus, use the plus ( + ) to add your first account. You'll be guided by the software to enter the correct information. Do the same with your other accounts, if any.
This gets rid of the deleted drafts, and allows you to access Mail again.
Post if you have any questions.

  • Hard Drive Spins Constantly

    Hello all,
New to Apple and to the Apple Discussion boards. Looks like a great resource for information. Now my question:
I've had my black MacBook for a little over a week now. Today while using it to do some word processing with Word, I noticed that the whole time I was using the notebook there was a constant low vibration across the whole surface where the keys and palms rest. I've never noticed this before today, so I'm inclined to believe it just started.
It seems to me like the hard drive is spinning constantly, which means its doing something, because I believe that's where the vibration is coming from. I've owned several laptops before this, and don't ever seem to remember a vibration so strong that I could feel it while typing. What gives? Is this normal for these MacBooks?
    Thanks all!
    --AARON

I believe mine is exhibiting the same behavior as yours is, and I believe this to be normal. So, I won't be taking it in to have it looked at. If you have any concerns about how yours is operating, than by all means have it checked out - there is nothing wrong with that.
Also, there is a good free program that got very good reviews from MacWorld. It's a HD monitor and it will put an icon in your tool bar and give you a constant update to your HD's health. It can be found here: http://homepage.mac.com/julianmayer/
It's your money that you've put into this purchase, so I don't want to tell anyone that they shouldn't have it looked at. Yet, I, personally don't see a need to for this issue.
    Hope this helps.

  • Suddenly - spinning beachbal in all new apps I open

I was doing a thing in an a PPC application — so in other words it's using Rosetta — and suddenly it started to beachball and then the Adium, Finder, Word and Safari followed, the fans started to run, the hung apps took alot of processor power.I had several other apps open too, but they continued to run as usual. I could force quit the hung apps and everything and the fans then calmed down, but as soon as I started for example Safari or Adium I got the beachball in those apps. If I started an application that hadn't been open before it also got hung, except for the Terminal and Activity Monitor, but eventually they also freaked out. I had to force restart the computer. This is the first time this happens to me in more than two months of heavy use. Why did this suddenly happen?
Here's a parts of the systemlog I found interesting:

Very few apps are open in the background.
What you are talking about was the recently used app bar, NOT open apps.  You were simply removing them from the recently used list.
Any apps that run in the background can be turned off from within the the app.  As the vast majority of apps do not run in the background you need do nothing but press the home button.

  • URGENT: Spinning Beachball...several apps getting "hung up"?

I was doing some tidying up last week and removed 2 gig worth of uneeded files to backup. Since doing that, I have had several applications get hung up. It started with Mail not opening, then Safari will start to load the home page and just spin, now Help and System Prefs are doing it also. I ran Disk Utlity and TechTool and neither found anything. Help me, you're my only hope.

    Hi Josh
Don't know if you've fixed this yet, but I have a similar problem. Seems to be with some Mac-native apps such as address book, mail and safari. I discovered that by logging off of your account then logging back on it cleared. I know it's not a fix, but it might help.

  • Iphone 6 -- iOS 8.1.3 -- screen constantly freezing, Apps instantly crashing, Photos not deleting, iMessages disappearing, iCloud not reflecting correct backups

Ever since downloading iOS 8.1.3 on my iPhone 6, I've been experiencing quite a few issues (I am assuming all are related to the update, but not sure)
I apologize in advance for the lengthy post! Here goes:
         • Screen constantly freezes--sometimes it freezes on the home screen (no apps open), other times when I am in Settings, Photos or any of my downloaded apps. Each time this happens I have to restart the phone by holding the home and lock buttons in order to unfreeze the screen...this happens approximately 4-5x per day.
         • All of my apps either freeze or crash upon opening, and my Mail app either refuses to stay open or it will show an empty inbox with 'no mail' --even though my email has always been synced to the phone.
         • I am not receiving a lot of iMessages or incoming calls to my iPhone, but most of the missing iMessages will appear on my MacBook Pro. And when I do receive iMessages normally, entire portions of certain conversations--both sent & received--keep disappearing (whether my iphone is on all day or if I have to restart it). *the convo that has gone MIA on my iPhone will still appear on the other persons phone.
         • When I open Messages or Recent Call logs, the contact names do not appear..only 10-digit phone numbers. (Even though all of the #s are saved by name in Contacts).*This has only happened a few times so far.*
         • Furthermore--and most frustrating!--my camera and photos are practically inaccessible. Almost every time I open 'Photos', the app crashes.. I have no available storage to use the camera so when I try to select photos and hit 'delete' the app crashes instead of deleting the photos.
         • I have considered performing a factory reset... however, my iCloud states I have 4.6gb available (w/ 5gb plan) even though my photos are turned on in iCloud, and should be taking up most of the 5gb storage space..they appear 'On,' but do not show up under 'Manage Storage'...the only apps/documents/data shown are WhatsApp and Mail so I am afraid to reset the phone as I have no idea if the photos are actually backed up or not.   (Screenshots are attached)
If anybody has been experiencing any of the same issues I would greatly appreciate your insight or advice for how to fix this! I'm hoping it is just a bug with the new iOS software and not an issue with my phone itself as it is only 3 months old.. Thank you in advance!

**Adding to the final photo in my original post... When I select the 'Kendall Anderson's...This iPhone' using 324.2MB, Photo Library is turned 'On', but has 'No Data'....I know this is not possible because my photos that were previously backed up used up ~3.5GB of storage.
Either I am doing something wrong here, or my iPhone just has a mind of its own with this new update!

  • Asking for apple ID password constantly & Crashing apps

    iOS 8.2, 6 Plus 64g
Since the 8.2 update, I have had issues with apps crashing pretty consistently, including Safari.  Also, I am being prompted to enter my apple ID password about 30 times a day.  It happens at random times, unlocking the phone, surfing Safari, etc.  It's just asking for password, and not even finger print ID.  I live about two hours from the nearest city & Apple Store, so I would like to avoid a Genius Bar appt if able to.
I can do the obviously and set up as a new device, but I would like to avoid that if there is a simple fix.
I am also having the problems everyone else is with cell service being terrible, unable to connect Bluetooth, and WiFi problems.  I am constantly having to reset my network settings.  Apple - Please give us a new update that actually fixes these issues soon!  Any help would be appreciated!

I'm afraid, setting it back to factory settings, without using any backup data afterwards, is the only way to make sure that this is not software related.
Set up the rest of the personal settings manually and test the phone.
If it is working after that, restore from the latest backup again. If not, contact Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Provider to get it checked.

  • Spinning wheel in App Store & Randomly dropping WiFi

    Hi there,
I'm having various problems with my iPad 2 16gb WiFi and searching various forums hasn't helped me find a resolution, so I'm hoping that someone here may have experienced the problem or maybe able to offer a solution.
I'm pretty new to Apple products, having recently moved to an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 from similar devices with another well known brand of OS, so I'm not sure if something is wrong or if this is normal behaviour.
    Symptoms
When connected to WiFi and trying to browse the app store, I often get a 'spinning wheel' and nothing seems to load, I've even left the iPad for over 10 minutes and still nothing happens. I can try and search, look at featured apps, but I don't get a connection. The iPad is definitely connected to WiFi as I can browse in Safari without any issues. The only way I can get around this problem is to hold the power and home button down to reset the device, sometimes this takes 2 or 3 attempts. My iPhone4 doesn't have this problem and it's sat on the same wireless LAN as the iPAD. I've tried turning off WiFI and turning it back on, but that doesn't resolve the issue, a reset is the only way to gain access to the App store again.
Another strange problem I get is that the WiFi connection on the iPad will just randomly drop out, I'll happily be browsing away and it will just disconnect leaving me with no internet connection. It reconnects after a few minutes, but occasionally I have to reboot the device to get it to connect again. My iPhone4 and other devices don't suffer this problem.
I thought this might be an issue with my router, but I've reproduced this problem on 3 different wireless networks now all with different brands of routers.
I've tried restoring the device to factory settings, upgrading the firmware on my router, rebooting the router, tested on multiple wireless LANs and the problem just won't go away, it's getting quite frustrating really. It can happen after 5 minutes, or 5 hours, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.
Sorry for the long post, but if anyone has any suggestions or can offer any explanation as to why this is happening I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks
    James

OK well I tried your suggestion in various ways...
I tried downgrading to WEP from WPA...
End result was the same problem.
I turned off security altogether and still got the same results, so it doesn't appear that the method of encryption has any effect on the behaviour.
Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help by the way

  • How to stop the "BEACHBALL" spinning forever with every move I do?

Sorry for the lack of a better word. I have (2) G3 imacs running 10.3.9 w/cable internet, the graphite is linked directly to the cable modem w/ Airport Extreme and and the Flower Power uses an Airport Express. The Flower Power has no problems and is faster than the graphite. The problem of the spinning "Beachball" has gotten worse. As I surf, and go from page to page, it will load fast, but THEN the ball spins! , I have to wait for it to stop so I can move about the page, I guess you can say it freezes for a minute or 2, the mouse moves freely, but I can't click on anything. I empty my cache, and zap my "p" rams at start up, and even rebuild the desktop.
