Beachball whenever i try to play media?

one piece of info, this just started after i updated to 10.5.5 and fcp
6.0.4.
why would i be getting a beachball every time i try to play media?
it's driving me crazy. how can i fix this.
this is a simple dv project someone brought me on an external lacie
fw drive. i tried taking a piece of media and placing it on my desktop
but it still beachballs for 5-10 secs before it plays. the drive is using
one of the rear fw800 connections to the box.
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
SMC Version: 1.25f4
fw drive is fairly full but system drive has plenty of room and they seem
to behave similarly. i've run uncompressed hd projects from my external
sata box without issue.
thanks for any ideas,
BabaG

more new details:
i just put together a test project of one sequence and one
media clip. all located on the fw drive since that seems to
make little difference.
when i place the media onto the timeline it is responsive for
a few seconds, then the beachball. once the beachball clears,
the timeline is again responsive.
i found this by simply clicking around the timeline to
different sections of the clip. i could freely click around
for several seconds, then i'd get a beachball. once it cleared,
i could again freely click around the timeline for a few more
seconds. then i'd get another beachball and the pattern would
repeat itself.
thanks and hope this presents some clues,
BabaG

I am getting this error whenever I try to play its file type on my MacBook Pro,"The document “VN622195.WMA” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."

The mac has no native way to read .wma files (these are Windows Media Audio files).  Do a search on the internet for playing wma files on a mac.  You will find several links to solution (one is to use flip4mac).

  • I have downloaded itunes, but whenever I try to play a song that I have already purchased I get a message that tells me that my computer isn't authorized. How do I authorize it? This is a new computer.

I have an itunes account with a lot of songs. I just bought a new computer, and whenever I try to play a song that I already paid for it tells me that my computer is not authorized. How do I authorize it? I had a new computer before and never had any problems playing the songs. Please can anyone tell me how to authorize my computer?

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

What do y mean by still works? No sound from speaker or headphones ro all apps? If try then it really does not work.
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for 64 GB 4G and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.

  • Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later."

Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later.". Have been using the Apple TV for 2 weeks and everything else seems to work OK.  The Apple TV reports its SW is up to date.  I've tried this with two movies rented frim iTunes directly from the Apple TV.

If after you download the movie, you navigate away and do something else with your Apple TV the content you have downloaded will be overwritten and you'll need to download it again. It's a pain in the neck for many who have slow downloads but it's something that comes with using volatile memory rather than a hard drive for storage.
Perhaps you're not doing this, but I thought it worth mentioning.

  • I installed adobe 9 on my Mt. Lion mac and now whenever I try to play any kind of video a box from adobe comes up asking me to give them permission to store things on my computer. This is scary to me. Should I say yes?

I installed adobe 11.9 on my computer and now whenever I try to play any kind of video a box comes up from Adobe asking me to give permission to store things on my computer. The boxes are all from adobe but the sites in the boxes differ. Should I say yes?  This is scary to me--virus paranoia.

You may have the box for 'Ask me before allowing sites...' or 'Block all...' checked in System Preferences - Flash Player, as pictured below... If so, try the 'allow' one instead, or if you prefer, continue to deny/allow when prompted.

  • Whenever I try to transfer media files to either another pc on my network, or an external hard drive, the content starts to transfer but eventually loses internet conectivity? PC has no issue transferring files.

Whenever I try to transfer media files from my mc to either another PC on my network or to a network attached storage device, the transfer will start but eventually my internet connection will fail. The NAS is the "WD my book live". I have had no issues with my pc in downloading and uploading from the NAS. The mac can download from the NAS but, as already stated, will not upload. File sharing is turned on for all devices. Today I tried to transfer files directly from mac to PC and the same issue happened, which tells me it is an issue with the mac. I have seen this question around but have not seen any responses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

  • Since installing the latest update, whenever I try to play purchased videos, they open in the separate video window and immediately causes iTunes to crash and close.

Ever since installing the latest iTunes 10.4 update, I've been having trouble playing purchsased videos. When I try to play them, they open in an unseen new window and after a couple of seconds of audio, iTunes crashes and has to close. There isn't something wrong with the videos as they play fine on my iPod and I have played most of them before, but they just won't play in iTunes suddenly.
    Can anyone help?

  • ITunes freezes whenever I try to play any videos

    iTunes 10.7
    Windows 8 64 bit
The moment I try to play a video iTunes locks up. I have to "end task" in the task manager. The only way it will work is in iTunes Safe mode.
I tried disabling Direct3d accel in Quicktime -- did not work.
I completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes using Apple's KB. - did not work
I reverted to older version. - also did not work
I reinstalled video drivers - did not work
Checked for plugins - there are none.
iTunes has basically become unusuable for me. I can't watch any videos.
Can anyone help? I have no idea how to troubleshoot safe mode issues and Apple's KB didn't help.

Do you use audio output via HDMI?
Stereo output via HDMI doesnt work, in this case try to use external (for notebooks internal) speakers and set them as your default audio device.

  • Firefox 3.6.12 crashes whenever I try to play a video on BBC news website.

I'm running Os x 10.5.8 and have fully updated my adobe flash for firefox. Every time I try to play a video on the BBC news website Firefox freezes, then crashes. Sometimes, but rarely upon reopening the video will work and it wont crash again. This problem only started with the latest patch on firefox. I run "NoScript" and "Adblock" but even with these turned off the problem persists.

I'm on Mac OSX 10.6.5 - and exactly the same problem. It seemed to start with Firefox 3.6.12 and 'latest' Flash upgrade (both done at the same time). Ive tried going back to the previous versions, but makes no difference.
Seems to be on 'auto-play' news video clips within the BBC news website, the loading info is 'stats.bbc.co.uk' as the dots spin - then crash...
Very annoying - is anybody looking at this Mozilla?

  • Whenever I try to play a video on iTunes, it crashes

This began happening a couple weeks ago. Since then I have downloaded the latest versians of iTunes and Quicktime. ITunes works perfectly fine otherwise, but I am unable to view any of my rented or bought conent on my computer. When I click to watch, the screen goes black and fullscreen (as if its about to play) and then the program crashes and the familiar "iTunes has stopped working - Windows is searching for a solution" window pops up.

  • Whenever i try to play a video on my iphone, it pauses literally every 2 seconds. i will hit the play button, the video will play for a few seconds and then it will pause again. what can i do to fix this?

videos will play for a few seconds on my iphone then it pauses. i press play and it pauses again. why is it doing this? and this is for all videos: youtube vides, videos off the internet, videos ive downloaded from itunes

I can understand this with videos you are streaming, i.e. maybe you have a slow data connection.
Videos on your phone should not do this.  Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
